You are going to be so much happier with a staysail + trysail. No lines chafing on shrouds, less slewing around going down waves, more comfortable too. We drop the lazies and fly the trysail anytime we're going downwind in big seas. Jibing a trysail is trivial, and keeping the boom lashed to center is safer if there's a beam-on sneaker like you had.
Great episode. If I remember the Nor'sea story well, they went bankrupt because of an irresponsible journal article, claiming they were on the brink of bankruptcy, when they were not. The article scared away their existing customers who canceled their orders, and then they did go bankrupt. And ended the production of one of the greatest small boats ever. So sad :(
Topher awesome video you really captured your adventure and brought us all along! Keep up the great work stay safe and play whatever music you want it’s your adventure, your story , your channel those of us who have been watching since you started will enjoy your choice of music because we know it’s an important part of your journey!
Yeah, that wasn’t an accident lol. I spent a lot of time packing everything away in such a way that it doesn’t make any noise because that’s one of my pet peeves offshore lol.
@SV-Mig I used to drive semi truck over the road hauling livestock. Once you load animals up you don't sleep until they're delivered and the rattling would drive me insane so I would hunt down the source and fix it..
Good thing about starting out like that is Mig has been put through it and came out smiling and if anything would have happened you were still close to home.. I must admit that it didn't look like much fun but the good days outweigh the really wonderful days..
This is your channel and you choose your music. I don't think you need to feel apologetic, people write their thoughts before they even think about thinking what they are actually saying. I am so very much impressed with Mig, it did amazing! She just keeps rolling on and on and it might be uncomfortable but it sure looks very safe. From your or your family's experience is there a noticeable difference in the sailing characteristics of the boat with a Warp? Is the difference measurable by feeling at least is maybe more the correct question? Love the series, you guys are rockstars!
Thank you so much for your kind comment! It’s very encouraging to us. As to your question about trailing a warp or a drogue, there is an almost immediately noticeable difference in the stability of the boat as she rides down the waves. In this particular gale, we did not have a drogue so trailing warps was our only option and even in this case, we noticed a difference right away. It was much easier for the boat to track her downwind.
Awesome video!! That looked kinda scary !! 😮 just fyi.. play what ever music you want to play ! Its your adventure and we are just lucky to share it with you 😊
It's very design dependent but some full keel boats can heave to under reefed main alone. We rode out a gale off Charleston in the Fall of 2019 aboard my Sea Sprite 30 using this technique and I understand that Pacific Seacraft 34s and 37s can do so as well. Basically, you sheet a double or triple reefed main close and then adjust the rudder to counter the force of the main trying to round the boat into the wind until you are basically 60 degrees off the wind. Some refer to this as "fore reaching."
Yes, a NorSea 27 is a little bit too tender and will not hold a heave-to without both sails. We did actually use forereaching at the very end of our time heaved-to because we were trying to make tracks offshore a little bit.
Great video! Thanks for sharing. We sailed a little Flicka 20 from Fl to the Bahamas, but our seas were nothing compared to yours! Can’t wait to put our little Nor Sea (Breakin Wind) on the ocean to visit the Bahamas again. We are currently just enjoying her on the lake. Your music was great by the way, and really expressed what you went through and how you felt, I am sure! Fair winds and following seas on your continued journey! PS…make sure Norm has plenty of gallon jugs in that back cabin!! 😂😂😂😂
Wow! Our coast is formidable and I guess it gave you a taste of how miss named “Pacfic” ocean is. Two years ago we sailed from Long Beach to Brookings in June - August beating into wind and 3 meter waves with less than 6 seconds intervals. Our boat is bigger, 1978 DownEast 38’ and it was a trouper. We also experienced rouge waves running west to east that were huge . We will be sailing south in middle of November. BTW I LOVE your music! Fair winds and warmer weather! SV Dulcinea
Thank you for the encouraging comment, Robin! We will be heading down to the channel Islands and Long Beach next month. I sure hope we have a good window for that. Lol.
Wow, you guys had it rough. I was on Hogfish (your marina mate) a few weeks prior coming from Newport, OR. We diverted to Crescent City when we had the opportunity to wait out a similar gale. Watching your video makes me glad we did. Thanks for sharing!
Can I interest you in gunkholing around Vancouver Island. It’s a sort of circumnavigation but you could anchor in a lovely protected spot nightly for a restful sleep. If you preferred to get knocked about (apparently some guys like that) head around the Brooks Peninsula in snotty weather knowing that in a couple hours you could be calmly swinging in Columbia Cove. Need I mention a soak (clothing optional) at the Hot Springs?
Fortunately, I have AIS transmit and receive. Most of the fishing boats use it, but don’t pay any attention to it. I also have a radar set up both of which I can watch below but I set a timer and come up every 20 minutes for a 360 look around.
The cockpit has two big drains called scuppers. They drain the cockpit fairly fast. After that trip, I have considered at some point, making them even bigger lol.
BTW this song is so contextual it is actually a bit eerie. What a perfect choice!
Thank you so much. I love it as well.
You keep doing the videos your way. I especially appreciate the seamanship knowledge you are imparting.
Thanks, Paul!

Sounds like a perfect storm sail plan!
I like your music selection.
Thanks!
That was some storm! Glad Mig is handling it well and you have some ideas for the next storm.
Thank you Shelly!

Thanks Matt I really appreciate the encouraging comment.
It's amazing how quite Mig is in the water.. you don't hear a bunch of creeks and stuff slamming around etc..

All so very true! Knowing she can take a beating sure gives me confidence the next time we get caught out in a gale.
@SV-Mig hopefully Norm will have his cabin completely leak proof..
@@bendaves77 yep he has fixed that already.
Good job explaining and showing how well that robust 27' handles storms!!! The song and one other previous is just right bro...
Thank you for the encouragement!

Haha Norm will have a couple extra bottles for longer passages! Love the Flicka! Lots more room in your Nor’Sea though! Love your Bahamas plan!!!

Great stuff as always Topher!!
Thanks again!
Fatty Goodlander tows fenders to slow the boat. I tried it and it worked.
Should have thought of that!

Hi Chris! Heard you had trouble getting out of Bodega Bay.. Will you still be there on the 7th and 8th? If we get a window we will leave then.
@@SV-Mig I was just helping out on the leg down from OR. I'm not sure what the plans are for his (another Chris) departure. Have a great trip!

Hahaha Thanks Larry! Sure is something to consider at this point lol. Hope all is well back in the hood.
Amazing Footage! How on earth are those solar panels still attached?
I know! I was certain that they would be gone when I came up on deck after that, knocked down! I guess our installation was better than I thought lol
Pee bottle. Dudes legit 🤙
😂😂😂 you know don’t you!!
how do you keep watch in these conditions? Freighters? Fishing Boats? Other misnamed “Pleasure Boats”?

Hey, when the waves come over into the cockpit, how does the water drain out of the cockpit?
The cockpit has two big drains called scuppers. They drain the cockpit fairly fast. After that trip, I have considered at some point, making them even bigger lol.
Stay safe in the storm.
