      Nathan, you're making my day! I'm hesitant to tell you, because you do both genres so well you'll make me obsolete! But, Ben Blozan (Inside Pianos channel) is a dear friend and we've experimented for years. As you've discovered, classical saxophone is a nightmare in small spaces. The biggest help is a ribbon microphone (SE Voodoo VR1 in the video). It naturally attenuates the "air' and "buzz" that condenser mics exaggerate. I push the mic back a tiny bit further for classical. Once we're all pumped full of vaccine, come hang out in Greensboro and I'll hook you up!

      @@drwallysax Man you kill me! Oooh okay, this is a game changer. I’ll look into investing in a ribbon mic such as that one. So true about condensers exaggerating the buzz - the very thing I don’t want it to do.
      And sounds like a plan! I just visited Greenville not too long ago, I didn’t realize you’re that near!

    I ordered this mouthpiece a while back and I can’t wait to get my hands on it! *Update* I got the mouthpiece and I LOVE it. It sounds so warm and dark and the tone is amazing! The one thing that I can agree with everyone else on is that the tip opening will take some time getting used to since it is a lot bigger than other classical mouthpieces.

    Hey Wally, great review, wish I viewed it months ago! Keep it up with more classical reviews? :)
    By the way, Selmer redid their facings a few years back when they transitioned to 100% CNC machining. A C* measures 1.55mm on alto nowadays, so the Delangle actually compares better to a C** or S90 200.

    This mouthpiece is my main mouthpiece. currently setup with Vandoren 3, Ishimori Ligature. Compare with Vandoren AL4 which has similar tip opening the Delangle has so much more projection like it can take what ever you give it. definitely a mouthpiece for the classical players. wouldn't recommend this mouthpiece to players still developing their embouchure.
    The French sentences that's in the box say:
    "I will entrust to you a precious companion! Inheritor of the great French tradition, the fruit of a rich culture of sound and of high technology, this mouthpiece will resonate with your energy on each and every stage.”

    Thanks for doing a review on this mouthpiece. I've been interested in it, but until now, all the video reviews I had seen were done by players who didn't have a credible legit sound. I played on a Rousseau NC-4 all through graduate school back in the 1990s, and currently have a Vandoren AL-3 for when I get legit calls, but haven't been convinced with either of them . And I wasn't a fan of the Selmer Concept when it came out. I've toyed with the idea of using an old Meyer Tru-Flex 4 for legit stuff. But now you've got me curious, and I'll be ordering one . . .

    When choosing a new mouthpiece I tried this and the Selmer Concept and I loved them both. They both had a really good sound and feel to them. However, I couldn’t personally justify the heftier price tag for the slight improvement in sound I got. This was only a short time playing I would like to clarify so maybe over longer periods of time I would change my mind.

      @@drwallysax yeah I think the mouthpiece gets some negative reviews from some classical players because they are trying to use the same strength reed on it because they feel like "I've been using 3.5 for many years." I did that too initially. Other than you, on all the reviews I saw on UA-cam, no one else went down a size. But once I went down 1/2, it felt and sounded amazing.

  • @kurt.schwab

    Thank you for a truly useful review! Fantastic sound you have by the way ;-). Do you have a solution to cope with the different shank sizes when using different mouthpieces? Lately I have been using that white tape that is used for plumbing. It works fine once it is in place, but the constant taking off and putting back again makes want to try to stick to one style of music sometimes ;-).
    I will definitely consider a Claude Delangle mpc if I decide to seriously pick up my classical playing again!

    • @drwallysax
      @drwallysax  4 роки тому +2

      I feel your pain Kurt. My solution, is to find two mouthpieces with similar bore diameters. I'm not picky about jazz mouthpieces, so I just find one that is similar to my classical piece (which I'm much more picky about). Teflon tape certainly works, but man, aint' nobody got time for that.

      @@drwallysax Thanks for the advice! I actually considered getting the Soloist as a piece for contemporary music, maybe even slightly crossing over into jazzier stuff when playing say in musical theatre, but doubling itself is already very expensive, so the Claude Delangle is actually quite steep. I currently play on a S90 200 for classical.
      My teacher happens to play on a Soloist for classical and contemporary music, and that piece has a really sweet sound. Maybe I should ask to try his before I make a decision?

    I bought mine from thomann music out of Germany. Before Selmer told them to stop selling their stuff in the US. I had played the concept for several years, but I'm never going back. The sound is so much better, hard to believe, and plays so easily. I love the weird little hybrid classical mouthpiece. I wish there was one for the tenor.

  • @DynamixWarePro
    @DynamixWarePro 3 роки тому +1

    I have been looking for good classical mouthpiece for quite a while but I have never really found one that responded how I wanted or gave me the sound I am after, so I decided that this mouthpiece seems like it has the qualities I am after as my S80 responds to the Legere reeds that I play and as this mouthpiece has the same tip thickness, I figured they should respond the same as I noticed with thinner tips, the reeds tend to get a bit too buzzy for me.
    Instead of buying more mouthpieces to find the right one, as I have tried many, I just got one of these and played it today, luckily I have a trial period on it so I could return it and get my money back if I don't like it so I didn't have to worry about spending that much on a mouthpiece.
    I played it on a Yamaha YAS-280, Legere Signature 2 reed and a BG DUO gold lacquer reed. I tested it against my Selmer S80 C**. What I noticed straight away was that the sound is louder and projection is not an issue, the gold bore really helps that. I felt the weight in my mouth also.
    The sound is very smooth with more body to the sound and I don't get that more aggressive sound that the S80 sometimes can have as you mentioned. Its also very even throughout and I found it easy to keep in tune but like you said it doesn't change the tuning.
    The low notes are easy to get out at normal volumes but there is a bit of resistance which made playing low notes softer a bit harder but with time I should improve on that.
    I have only started learning altissimo but so far the altissimo sounds fuller than I was getting from other mouthpieces but like low notes, its a little resistant, but the resistance I was getting from both the altissimo and low notes wasn't bad resistance as I didn't any pushback like I have on some mouthpieces like my Soloist E. I feel I could have the endurance to play a lot longer on it but I just have to practise so I can play softer on it and get the notes out.
    Overall I find its the best classical mouthpiece have ever played and I have played Selmer S80, Soloist, Vandoren Optimum and E. Rousseau classical mouthpieces and it hands town beats them all for me as its well made, comes in a nice box, it doesn't sound stuffy or overly dark, its not grainy/aggressive sounding like the S80, doesn't have that pushback resistance feeling and doesn't have problems with projecting.

    • @drwallysax
      @drwallysax  3 роки тому +1

      It certainly has a lot of power, but I'd be very comfortable playing chamber or orchestral works on it. It might sound a bit more "forward" in the video due to close mic position. It wasn't that much louder than my AL3 (which is quite timid). And hello from the finally not blazing-hot September in North Carolina!

    How about the Soloist differences? Playing an E, so there will be a tighter tip and the chamber from Delangle is round. Having some extra resistance sounds also really interesting, having that extra next to the instrument itself🤔.
    the Csharp problem is solvable in a way, but not easy to achieve😬
    And beautiful sound, really getting the singing saxophone 🎷

    • @DynamixWarePro
      @DynamixWarePro 3 роки тому +2

      I have a Soloist E and I also have this Claude Delangle mouthpiece. I know the tip is wider on the soloist but I always found the Soloist to have resistance in the low notes that made me have to push harder to get the notes out. On the Delangle, its easy to get the low notes but there is a little resistance when playing softer on it but not the pushback feeling I got with the Soloist. Its similar with altissimo, the notes are fuller but a bit resistant and again I don't get the pushback feeling, its more that I have be precise and have be precise at playing those to make them come out. I also noticed with the Soloist when playing louder it has a bit of a buzz in the sound, the Delangle doesn't have that. I also noticed the Delangle due to the gold plated bore, is louder than the Soloist with a bit of a smoother sound with a more richer tone.

    • @dhrwouter
      @dhrwouter 3 роки тому +1

      @@DynamixWarePro You're right about that. Bought the mouthpiece a month ago. And got to say it really plays smoothly, much richer sound but still got the dark tones. Played the Soloist after a couple days to ensure about the differences, and the soloist was so dark and hollow compared playing with the Delangle mouthpiece. (used same reeds on both). The Delangle mouthpiece was really a step forward. Also with the orchestra's I play with, we have different play styles. From a march, classic, cinematic, pop, jazz and so on. This mouthpiece is also capable of those styles too and not in a shy way ;). Really amazing in classic, but also masterful in the others

    I feel like this is true for all wind instruments, but especially brass instruments and saxes. Get a firm grounding in classical playing before you go off to play jazz, rock, whatever. It’ll serve you well. Learn to play your instrument with good symphonic tone, consistent intonation, and solid classical technique. In other words, listen to your teachers. Lol. You can come at it from other directions, but you’re just going to end up playing catch-up and correcting problems in your playing later on. This is outstanding playing. Gorgeous tone.

In any case, almost became my primary, but the Concept is better for me after all. One particular reason - the beak slope on the Concept is much steeper, opens the oral chamber more.
