A review of the new Selmer Paris Claude Delangle Mouthpiece. This is is Selmer's first exploration of bi-material design and an exciting new product!
Setup:
- Selmer Paris Claude Delangle / Selmer S90 190
- Legere Signature 3 1/4 Strength Reed
- Ishimori Gold Plated Ligature
- Selmer Serie III Alto Saxophone
- Breathtaking Lithe Strap
Audio:
All audio was recorded using a Blue Yeti Pro on stereo mode into Logic Pro X. The audio was recorded with higher gain and the saxophone with lower gain. Apart from applying a limiter, no modifications were made to the sound.
Music:
"Rapsodie pour orchestre et saxophone" by Claude Debussy, recorded by Joshua Heaney and the Susquehanna University Orchestra.
For me in particular the sound that the new mouthpiece gives off a dark and warm sound in the lower octaves and nice and rich sound in the higher octaves. Overall it was great. I liked that there was a difference that I noticed right away as soon as you played. I'd like to say thank you for the video and stay safe.

Thanks for a great review! The fact that you seem to do some things (altissimo for example) with more ease and efficency on the Claude Delangle than your tried and proven piece says a lot! As I´m a jazz player (Meyer 6 for like 25 years) dabbling sometimes with classical, I´d like a piece that is closer to my Meyer but still can do the classical. I don´t really believe there´s something that will do classical and jazz very good, but this could be a closer call and better match for my Meyer. I have played the Concept for two years and for me it´s great on soprano, a bit dull on the alto.
That Debussy Rhapsodie in the background though... great piece

i play on a concept but also play on a claude delangle. but i love watching other people’s try outs on the piece!

I also used to play a concept , and bought a Claude delangle. For me the most important difference is the volume. I always felt the concept working against me when need to play louder. The Delangle is much better for me, and also plays quiet when necessary. Its expensive but worth it. No doubt
I agree with that observation! The Concept and the AL3 both suffer with a stifling problem. I chalk this up to the combination of thick rails, small tip, and round chamber. You may get similar results from a concept if you were to open it from its normal 1.52mm to the CD's 1.65mm.
Hi! i like your review of this mouthpiece and your tone is greate but I just wanted to say that there's a fingering for chromatic scale. It's Tc to change notes b to c and c to b without breaking the legato. :D
Thanks for your review. I heard Jim at Sax. Co . Uk who played the S80/S90/Claude's mouthpiece. I thought it was excellent it had something that the others didn't have but the others are great I have played S 80s C * since they came 40 years ago or so? I like itHE warm sound I personally like Selmer mouthpieces very much I think it's got something to do with the rubber but they are made from as well as the design.I would like to try this new mouthpiece but my local shop is closed at the moment and I'm not too keen on the price! As you say I think that it may project a bit more!I also think sometimes we are in some kind of "cult" as many players seem to have more mouthpieces than reeds and usually end up sounding like them last mouthpiece eventually Thank you and God bless you and yours! I'm on the fence. Looking for a darker MP that's accurate and not too hard to control to replace my AP3
compared to selmer concept, i had to go down 0.5 size in reed. it definitely feels a bit harder to control and on my saxohpone, it's a bit hard to bring up the middle C. but it is much easier to project.
Dear Joshua, from how many of these Delangle mouthpieces did you choose yours, are they all the similar?

Hey, great job and review. It sounded like the CD had more life and vibrancy. Articulations had more bounce and tone to them. Have you found any tradeoff in achieving true soft dynamics? I'm playing on a Concept now, but have played on various sizes s90's.
I like the spectrum analysis in logic...which mics did you use?
I have not had much difficulty in producing the soft dynamics, all though a little more breath sound may creep in every so often. I am sure that practice could relieve that problem. If you like the Concept and the S90, you will like this... it has characteristics of both!
I use the Blue Yeti Pro mic.

Have you tried the selmer concept? If so would you say amount of air that you put in is similar to the delange?
The Delangle definitely can take a lot more air than the Concept due to the larger tip opening.
Thanks for your review of this mouthpiece. Would you mind sharing what software were you using to analyze and display the overtones in this video?
Sure thing! I recorded note (concert A) in Logic Pro X. I analyzed the signal with both spectrogram and graphic equalizer plugins. I chose to use the graphic equalizer for the screenshots in the video because it’s easier for most laymen to read and comprehend the frequency response. You don’t need Logic to do this, as GarageBand has the same plugin.

There must be an advantage to the weight, the vibrations would not dissipate. Similar to the water filled trumpet mouthpieces
The jazz ... You played this mouthpiece on Selmer III alto. And with this mouthpiece, esp. in the lower and mid register, you produced sounds more typical of a sultry, rich, jazz vocabulary. Only your articulation wasn't jazz articulation, but the sound was capable of it. If just slightly refaced, e.g. to 1.75mm (in between sizes #4 and #5) , to allow more air, this can become an excellent mouthpiece for jazz too.
Is this mouthpiece meant to have a slight dimpling / machine marks on the baffle? It looks very fine, like a pattern...just checking because mine does!
Yes, I believe this is by design and a product of the CNC manufacturing process. As long as it plays great, I don’t mind!

The pieces were:
- Eugéne Bozza: “Aria”
- Lars-Erik Larsson: “Concerto” mvt. 1
- William Albright: “Sonata” mvt. 1
Bozza is typically played by advanced high schoolers and college freshmen, whereas the Larsson and Albright are considered to be graduate-level.
I recommend you find a teacher, first and foremost! Then, perhaps look into some method books to get started. Hite has a good collection of “melodious studies” for intermediate level players.

Definitely the Concept, which is easier to play due to its smaller tip. Having said that, I personally prefer to recommend the S80 C* for intermediate players.
I've heard it conjectured that this mouthpiece will have more problems with condensation due to the metal bore. Did you notice any difference in this regard?
JoAnn Peeler Good question. To be honest, I didn’t notice any difference at all! I think condensation is going to be more of a problem when the facing or the throat are metal, because they’re closer to the reed.
I play a metal mouthpiece for classical on tenor, and I have never had any more condensation problems than with any other mouthpiece. Frankly I think that has to do with the tip opening, the baffle immediately behind the tip, and how 'wet' a player you are.
The one disadvantage metal mouthpieces do actually have is that they respond more readily to temperature changes, so if you try to tune and then perform in different temperatures, you are more screwed than usual.
I believe Marcel Mule Play the metal mouthpiece so you're in very good company!
Would this be an upgrade over the S80 c* ?
Beast 64 It depends on what you’re looking for! If you like the sound and can afford it, yes! But. I also really like the S80 C* and played one for years, it’s a great mouthpiece.

That piece is the first movement of the Sonata by William Albright.
Honestly, I have very little experience with the v5 series apart from two of the soprano mouthpieces. I’d be happy to review a handful if I can get my hands on them, but they see low interest amongst players because they’ve been around for a long time and are not the new hotness, more like 90s/early 00s hotness.
@@heaneymusic what about Rampone & Cazzani Solista mouthpiece? I think it has been available since around summer 2020. Rampone saxophones are interesting on their own but as for their classical Solista mouthpiece, I was not able to find any video here.

@@kevinngo9138 I'd recommend learning on a standard French/American setup rather than a Rascher one. And I am saying this as a person who loves listening to the Rascher school as well as played Rascher gear in high school.
What ligarure for selmer Paris Claude Delange?
Most standard hard rubber ligatures will work. I enjoyed the WoodStone Ishimori and BG Tradition on this particular mouthpiece. I imagine the Vandoren ligatures would work well, too.

$379.00 for a mpc, your getting off easy. my last 2 mpc's have been in the neighborhood of $600.00. love my TW. GAIA though, you and can have it when you pry it from my cold dead hand.
Thank you for showing the sound of this mouth piece. After watching virtually all review of this mouth piece, I concluded that this mouth piece is NOT for amateur. Professionals can make this mouth piece sings beautifully, amateurs just cannot control this mouth piece, they end up sounds ugly.
I’d agree that it’s not for young students. You need a reliable embouchure and good air support!

Here is a young student playing on a selmer delangle mouthpiece. This guy isn’t a professional. He is a junior in high school. Give it a listen :) it may surprise you a bit. I think he sounds pretty good to be honest
