I absolutely loved Glass Animals debut album Zaba. It had interesting textures, sticky vocals, and percussion that actually added something other than a beat. Their follow up was a shift but still good. This album though, I have listened to it only once and was massively disappointed personally when it was released . It felt so boring and forgettable to me. But then when it was received so well by old fans and new fans I was confused. I thought I was missing something special but just couldn’t understand it. So, while I am happy that they found success, I am glad to know I am not alone in my assessment
@@Handles_are_garbage Every big artist abandons its base at some point, in favor of money. See Metallica. The music business is a machine that makes a few people a lot of money by controlling who gets on the charts. You don't get on the charts because you're good. You get there because someone puts you there, because they think you'll sell a lot of music and make them money. The system is corrupted.
@@andybaldman the music industry definitely has problems, no argument there. However, in my opinion popular music is just as valid as independent music even if you don’t care for it. Garfield comics are just as valid as the avant-garde work of a modern artist. They simply serve a different purpose and and are for a different audience. So I don’t feel personally that Glass Animals lost stamina or “sold out”. They simply are serving an audience separate from myself. I don’t care for their new album but the bottom line is most (not all) people that go into the music business want to make money. That’s what Glass Animals are now doing and I am fine with that. Disappointed, sure but I certainly don’t blame them for wanting to make money nor do I feel they owe me anything. Like I said in my original comment, I’m glad for their success
When I think Rock I immediately think of bands like Nirvana, Guns N Roses, AC/DC, Smashing Pumpkins, Nickelback, Creed, Nine Inch Nails, Pearl Jam, those bands immediately come to mind. But over the last 15 years the media like to label everything as Rock, from Coldplay, to Arcade Fire, to Florence & The Machine, to One Republic, to Imagine Dragons, to Lana Del Rey, to Bastille, to Twenty One Pilots, to AJR, and yet none of that is Rock, it’s all Indie PoP. When I think Rock I think aggressive music that’s wild and has a ton of energy, not music you would hear while shopping.
Couldn’t agree with you more on this Justin! It’s always nice to try to find a positive but sometimes it’s not easy. One thing I will add though, is that the chords in this when hearing you play them on your Backpacker remind me a little of ‘Dani California’ by the Red Hot Chilli Peppers. Don’t know if you’ve watched the Beatles’ Get Back documentary thing, but if you have, I’d love to hear what you think about it. Personally, I reckon it’s one of the best things I’ve seen in ages.
Just saw the part where Paul starts making up "Get Back" out of thin air. Each time he ran through the verse and melody, it became a little bit more familiar and eventually Ringo, who was sitting intently by joins in on the words "Get Back" and then you knew you just witnessed music history in the making. Amazing and inspiring.
Yeah, it's really bad. For a culture of people who are terrified of looking foolish, we sure have a lot of adults who make themselves appear dumb as bricks every time they attempt to write something.

To be fair, most people have legit criticism because most musicians have studied music theory. It's not about validation so much as "ok, so I'm not insane".
I wonder if today's popular music tends to be simple stuff because these days people use music primarily as a background distraction/stimulant whilst doing something else (like scrolling through social media). That's why they prefer simple, repetitive tones that don't 'get in the way'. Not many people drop everything purely to listen to the music these days. I might be wrong. Maybe I'm just salty because it's more popular than the stuff I enjoy (dad rock uber alles).
You were the first band I ever saw live when I was around 7 and I’m 25 years old now. So around 2004/5 at the M.e.n arena Manchester. It was a great gig I remember you flying over the crowd on a big panther wearing a cat suit. It was a great show from what I remember of it and in all fairness you don’t seem to have aged much. Hopefully I’ll get to see you live again sometime.
I’m not sure if someone has already said this but I think Ash is on the right track in the comments. This kind of music is designed for cruising in the car and looking at your phone while driving around the club district in your low rider seeing who’s looking at you. The bass would make the windows shake enough to see if anyone is looking at how cool your are in your car….with the ladies in the back seat singing the chorus while downing White Claw or whatever. Yet somehow they get on the festival lineups. It’s music I can easily ignore if that makes sense?

You're right about the weird tense shift in the opening line, but the next line makes it worse. "Don't stop baby, you can walk through." That implies an action that can only happen in the future. So all three tenses are used in the opening two lines of the song. It's an unsexy tense threeway.

The Somerville song sequence doesn't have the Ab ,but does contain the E ,but interestingly that sequence ,as well as many others , is featured in 51st anniversary by Hendrix.
I’ve had this song stuck in my head for days at a time from playing FIFA. I can’t remember if I liked it at first or not. If a song gets drilled into your head enough it becomes a part of you. In my head I was saying ‘heat waves been fuckin me off’. Not sure that makes any more sense than the actual lyrics. 🤷🏻♂️

@@electricshrapnel4368 It's just a Cmin7 chord rooted on the 3rd fret. He does appear to place his pinky down on the high e string though, and that changes it to a Cmin13 (because that's adding the 6th). I run a guitar education website, so I can't help myself.
First video of yours I've seen. This song has come on one of my playlists a few times. You mentioned near the end of your vid that besides the mid ranges, there's nothing but a high hat. If played on a full ranged system rather than a portable device, it's bass line to me is what is catchy. Otherwise I agree, there's nothing particularly appealing about it. That is just my two cents but thought I'd offer my opinion. Rhythm section always stands out to me and sometimes you want to mindlessly lose yourself in the beat rather than stimulate yourself with actual technical talent. Also, subbed.=]
I remember there was a theory in the 80s that by 2000 every conceivable chord progression in pop/rock would have been used. I definitely think we have passed that point. Just wanna say, I love your uploads, and seeing you guys on Later, especially low slung guitars with guys who could play was manna after the dearth of 'guitars with attitude' at that time. We need the Darkness to bring some light in our lives. 👍
That is so weird that I remember laughing at that theory! Then I worked at a guitar shop and one employee said it is impossible because of chord progressions ….he was from Rhode Island.😳
Just discovered your channel. Big thumbs up! Re your puzzlement over some of the lyrics you mentioned: "heat waves" and "fake water" (or whatever) sounds like driving along long stretches of desert highway with mirages and lots (LOTS) of sunshine. BTDT so hope this offers some insight. BTW I'm 69yo and came up with Stones, Led Zep, etc. I love great singing and you have quite a voice. Looking forward to seeing more of your content.
Love your candid assessment. Had not heard of this band before today and I will repress having ever heard of them. "Taco Bell's canon" is an apt description, and I suspect this will appear in a future edition of the Taco Bell Quarterly. Without guitars, there is no rock!!
The last time I heard someone comment on grammar in lyrics was in 1978 (Rose Royce, Love Don't Live Here Anymore)! Keep up the good work and funny comments. Note to self, don't drink coffee while listening to Justin, you'll end up snorting it!
I heard of this band a while ago. Somehow their record from last year was a hit. I don't consider the band to be of the "rock" sound. It's pop synth/hip hop. They're version of pop synth/hip hop isn't my cup of tea.
I'd label them exactly like that too. I actually think the most problematic thing about this song AND this band is precisely that : being wrongly labeled as "rock". I don't know if it's the record label's fault, their management, public broadcasters, music press or even the band themselves, but whoever chose to label them as a "rock band" was clearly asking for criticism.
😂 “it’s the fu*!ing ostinato again!” …brilliant Justin, love these! I’ve just searched for this on UA-cam and someone in their wisdom has created a 1 hour loop of this song. Oh yes! 1 hour of torturous ostinato! I think we have a dangerous person on our hands! I have to agree with your final thoughts though, it is absolute dog shit!
Could you also analyse your own songs and show how to actually play them step by step, as in include tabs on the screen? I'd love to finally get the solo in 'Growing on me' after 10 years of (probably) getting it wrong lol Oh and explain why you are suddenly playing a Charvel with a Floyd Rose???
Hey Justin, Glass Animals made some noise in the U.S. around 2016, then disappeared, still haven't resurfaced, although I do see "Heat Waves" from time to time at UA-cam (they probably have an amazing PR team). They have a good groove, mildly catchy Chorus, The Lyrics in the chorus section, something about Heat Wave in June, etc, just memorable for you to sing along with while shopping for new pair of Jeans at The Gap (or wherever Millennials shop these days). Perhaps the vocalist knows how to look into the camera, who knows? Hey, I worked with (studio) a female Vocalist who made a career out of knowing how to look into the camera, the proper use of attitude and makeup! I've actually come to like her work!
Yeah they're good songwriters and this song is really nicely produced. It kinda bugs me when rock fans criticize modern pop because it's different without even giving it a chance.

100% agree
I concur, I think Zaba is subtly brilliant but it feels like they’ve been leaning hard into the pop thing since then, but really my cup of tea
Welcome to music. You have your whole life to create your first hit, then six months to create your second. Some artists don’t have stamina.
@@andybaldman
the music industry definitely has problems, no argument there.
Tim Pierce told me to come here, glad i did, keep ‘em coming!
I’m amazed at how good that little guitar sounds

Couldn’t agree with you more on this Justin! It’s always nice to try to find a positive but sometimes it’s not easy.
One thing I will add though, is that the chords in this when hearing you play them on your Backpacker remind me a little of ‘Dani California’ by the Red Hot Chilli Peppers. Another example of using an ostinato but at least RHCP made a song with some substance to it.
I believe RHCP did not make a penny from D.C as they stole so my from Last Dance of Mary Jane.
@@inutero75 I don't think tom petty ever made a big deal about it because he apparently stole it from the jayhawks and I think they never said anything about mary jane's last dance because they were his support band on a tour

awesome content. I had the pleasure of seeing the Darkness in New Haven, CT - what an awesome show!
Don’t know if you’ve watched the Beatles’ Get Back documentary thing, but if you have, I’d
love to hear what you think about it.
It's alright. I preferred "Out for Justice," tho.
I didn’t know about this channel and it made me very happy. Sometimes the algorithm actually works.
"Last night all I think about is you" 😂 another great video! Love watching these.
Yeah, it's really bad. For a culture of people who are terrified of looking foolish, we sure have a lot of adults who make themselves appear dumb as bricks every time they attempt to write something.
Except these aren’t even the actual lyrics
Yeah it should be "Last night all I THANK about is you".

To be fair, most people have legit criticism because most musicians have studied music theory. It's not about validation so much as "ok, so I'm not insane".
Thankyou for rocking Guildford last night Justin! We loved it (with added effective woahs!)
This may be my favorite yet. Your analysis was both spot on and delivered in such a way that I was cracking up. Keep it up!
Love to see what you're doing!!
Wallpaper music. It’s good for a background.

You're right about the weird tense shift in the opening line, but the next line makes it worse. "Don't stop baby, you can walk through." That implies an action that can only happen in the future. So all three tenses are used in the opening two lines of the song. It's an unsexy tense threeway.
React to the adults are talking by the strokes. Great modern rock
I've watched and relished every installment of Justin Hawkins Rides Again, and your positivity and respectfulness are admirable. You are truly a gentleman and a class-act. I do appreciate your honesty regarding this particular song, however. I know that if you'd been able to find any redeeming qualities whatsoever, you would have mentioned them. Thanks for what you do, especially given the fact that you're on tour. I know that it takes a lot of effort, and we appreciate that.

His hair apparently grew 10 inches within a few days. Justin ‘Peanut Butter Solution’ Hawkins rides again.
Yep. But fortunately not the Poundland ones he had in the 'Love is Only a Feeling' video 👀😁
Permission to Land was probably my favourite album growing up. For some reason I've never listened to any of their others. Going to rectify this as soon as possible.
Thank you Justin! This is definitely an EDM adjacent pop song,! What is with people classifying every male band as rock, boys can make pop too! Even if it is crap!
People these days think that if a band have tattoos they must be rock.

@tinker taylor. I wouldn’t even call it EDM either, it’s just 2010’s PoP with Synth elements.

Saw you in Exeter last light and loved it. Elliot is a legend.
I tried a new drinking game! Do a shot every time Justin says ostinato! I ran out of alcohol before the end of the video 😂
That would never happen to either a boy-scout or a real drinker. Now you need to stock up properly and replay this video. Get to it !
An eloquent and articulate British rock star. Kind of like Richie Blackmore but with more humor and charm. Cheers mate!
The last chord on the 'again' sounded a bit too sweet. Try it with a diminished 7th.
if I saw correctly, he played a major 7th, which is a weird pick for the famous (infamous?) "Justin Hawkins Rides Again" - Taylor Swift
@@jamescole4317 I'm finding it hard to tell based on his fingers but think it looks like a root 5 dominant 7th based on the open position E7 chord shape. I could be wrong though. I don't have the best ear and I wouldn't put it past him to muddy the waters with some tricky inversion beyond my level of non-expertise.
@@electricshrapnel4368 It's just a Cmin7 chord rooted on the 3rd fret. He does appear to place his pinky down on the high e string though, and that changes it to a Cmin13 (because that's adding the 6th). You can barely hear the pinky when he strums it while singing, but then he stabs it two times really quick afterwards, and it's totally there. Sorry for nerding out. I run a guitar education website, so I can't help myself.
“I thought it was me until I heard their follow up”. Haha, that got a good chuckle out of me.
Glass animals had an amazing first album, second wasn’t as good but solid, and has been plummeting since
I wholeheartedly concur, Justin. Well done.
The Song Exploder Podcast has an episode where Glass Animals talk through this song. It's great. Really makes it even more amazing to listen to.
You and Mika both have amazing voices, I am thankful to Freddy Mercury for both of you
Pure poetry that rides again episode.
Well, rock is pretty much basic music isn't it? Depending on what kind of rock it is. Pop as well.

Also note Ed Sheeran's non-acoustic version of Bad Habits, has a curious "Small Town Boy" feel about, too.

The song Glass Animals released in '16 was, "Life Itself."
I love glass animals but I agree they shouldn't be considered rock
The Rolling Stones put out a disco album. Maybe the act has made a few pop songs to get famous.
I always thought of them as trip-hop or some kind of evolution of it
You had me at the heavy eyeroll when the drums first come in.
Glass Animals aren't "rock", but all of their albums are incredible.
Yeah they're good songwriters and this song is really nicely produced. It kinda bugs me when rock fans criticize modern pop because it's different without even giving it a chance.
Also by good songwriters I meant when it comes to writing hooks, catchy songs, idk about their lyricism
Songs like this are one of the reasons why I have got in Japanese rock, I don't understand what's being said, but it sounds so much better.
