Where did our outrageously great musicians go? Their creative musicianship was and is beyond anything we've heard since the 1960's and 1970's. We are so damn lucky to have lived in that period of musical experimentation in the 60s and 70s. A true renaissance of musical ingenuity and something that hasn't been matched or able to measure up to anything that's been heard since, even to the slightest degree.
Early January 1981, this song was a #1 Pop hit; the "lyric and the melody" has me thinking about a 3-1/2 minute dream of me being under a blue pool of clear water-I got the message later that Summer!!
Not sole, but "Soul Survivors" - It was a group. ("Expressway to your Heart"). Also a tad poignant here. He was his fraternity's stud back in '67 in college, with his choice of young and willing girls. At the time of the song, it's the 80's, he's in his mid-30's but still picking up 19-year-olds with whom he has nothing in common. His latest doesn't even know who Aretha Franklin was. They can't relate through dancing or conversation, but a bottle of good tequila and fine Columbian weed gets them on the same page.
I like that you added "mostly" I rarely think about the actual meaning of the song. What passes through my mind is that line " the Cuervo gold and some fine Columbian" keeps me listening after all the years. ✌️😄
Oh God I'm 61 now but I remember when I was in my 40's .. even thirties there's something about a young women that like older guys... And now I'm an old lion and loving it ....
Listen closely its about an older man and a younger woman how fine she is and although there's a attraction the dont relat in music an comon conversation but bring in some drink and smoke and then things loosen up to a great evening of enjoying each other. Hope this helps. Kept it the explanation to a PG rating.
Ah wishful thinking,my exact sentiments in the 80s when the song came out ,while in service, about a girl named carol m. I was 26 she was 19 , Drank a whole bottle of Chablis and played song over and over again till the dusk ,then went to the bar
Donald Fagan; not a "Handsome" Man, but he didn't have to be with chart toppers like this. The sheer amount of Coca-Cola and Gorgeous Young Trim he enjoyed throughout the 70's and 80's into the 90's is only known to other living Legends like him.
You're in a FOUL mood? Jump in your Car at Dusk, play this song, roll down a window and just cruise. Stay off the Freeway, and just Cruise. You will feel a whole lot better in about 6 minutes.
"This song is about a 40-something year old man scheming to get a 19 year old girl in the sack, using booze and marijuana to make it happen. It's funny to think of soccer moms all over the country bopping their heads to the beat - unaware of the meaning of the song." - Donald Fagan, Rolling Stone Magazine.
Its kind of open ended with the cuervo gold thing. It could either symbolize his loneliness as he feels detached from that group of people, but it could also be the other one. I wouldnt put it past Steely dan to talk about something like this Lmaooooo
I think he’s assuming too much. The song was popular in roller skating rinks. The lyrics are very suggestive, but assuming “soccer moms” don’t understand the lyrics is a bit naive. A huge assumption about a large group of women tells me he doesn’t have a clue about “soccer moms.”
Any retiree who wants to hook up with a sweet young thing who doesn't remember Aretha needs to keep this song in mind. The only common interests they'll share is fine Columbian, Cuervo Gold and money. When he's broke and gets cut off he'll come to his senses.

Music was hijacked by the evil pedo Satanist overlords.
We will return to a world of beauty soon .
Hang on. The ride will be bumpy for a bit!
All the great music stayed in the 60s 70s & 80s
Heard this song on the radio today and I haven't heard it in years. Brings back memories.
Great art as well as music is timeless. Always love the chill vibe of this great song. Thank you, Steely Dan, for providing the soundtrack to my life.
Gotta love the Cuervo gold chorus
That's my favorite too 😁
@@Raven-yj5pp mine too. what drug are they talking about?

Brings back memories of my childhood days
Steeley dan is always on que, but it shows we all are growing old
This song always reminds me of the early 80's when I actually had to go out and earn a living. No more screwing off in college.
This is a memory of Skating LOVE IT
Finally found it 👑👑👑1990👑👑👑,but obsessed wit the 👑👑👑70's and 80's👑👑👑
2023 and this song never gets old
They missed lyrics, skate a little lower now. This was a huge, and I mean huge hit when I went roller skating back in the days.
Me too
I can't remember how many times we were at the rink when this song was a hit.
Yeah, trying to explain to my adult kids roller skates vs roller blades! LOL
Weird song to play considering the whole “middle-aged man creeps on a 19 year old aspect”
@@wildonionchase3934 he's singing about way back when in 67. I can see what your saying though.
Dang..I miss the 70's..roller skating to this and "FM"..
you mean 1981 was when this song was a january 1981 number 1 hit
This is a very seductive song, and I like the rhythm to it ( and the lyrics).
i remember the greatest combination in the all days.....the cuervo gold & the fine columbian..... say it again, what a lovely song.

Haha! Love your understanding. Spot on!
Muita qualidade! Que instrumental maravilhoso!
I loved this song, I was going out with a 19 year old at the time, I was 28. The fine Colombian so true back then.
Takes me back to 1981
Cuervo Gold and some fine Colombian sounds wonderful even today. This song has aged well........mostly.
@Evan Hodge Music that ages well is what stays relevant. It appears younger than it actually is, you see?
