An interesting thing I learned that J.K Rowling said for Voldemort’s name is that she wanted it to be different from any other character ever created. She typed it into the internet to see if it already existed, and she got nothing. She wanted to make a very unique name because she knew that was exactly what Tom Riddle would want. He would want to be one of a kind, the only person with the name he chose for himself. So interesting! (Also I love that I’m early for a video by you again they are so interesting and insightful and I love the Harry Potter series 😊)

Brilliant! I think the connections between the names in the Wesey family and Arthurian legends are also interesting.

Harry's name actually means 'home ruler' which I think doesn't align with Harry's personality at all

I always learned that Hermes (Mercury) is the "Götterbote" (It's German and translates to the "delivery boy") but also the God of the thives, which I think is not that suiting for someone like Hermoine. I never heard that he's also the god of Knowledge, so maybe you should rethink this one

Hermes, Thoth, and Mercury are the Greek, Egyptian, and Roman equivalents of one another. Often they were considered to be the Gods of Learning and Knowledge.

@@BrettsThoughts Hermes wasn't a sage thogh like Athena. But he is I think associated with illusionary magic and relaying the word of the gods. I can see that Hermione would see (book) knowledge as almost divine, or a path to the divine

I don’t think there’s a issue with giving a non white character a nonwhite name

That’s not the point I was making. My point was - so many of the white characters are given well thought out names. Characters of other ethnicities didn’t seem to be given the same thought or effort in their naming.
