  • Northrop Grumman has introduced their newly-developed M1147 Advanced Multi Purpose (AMP) 120mm cartridge for the U.S. ABRAMS M1A2 main battle tank. This new line-of-sight type ammunition is the next generation high explosive multipurpose round intended to replace other types of projectiles currently used in ABRAMS M1A2.
The XM1147 (M1147) Advanced Multi-Purpose (AMP) ammunition is a 120mm round intended as the replacement for four 120mm rounds within the US Army. The AMP is a lethal weapon with the ability to perform as Multi-Purpose Anti-Tank (MPAT), M830A1, M830, and High Explosive Anti-Tank (HEAT) round are now in service. The key of the new tank round is the ability to use three fusing modes with the airburst one allowing to target dismounted troops/personnel by detonating at a given height. The other two fusing modes are Point Detonation (impact) and Point Detonation-Delay which allows to penetrate the target such as bunkers and fortifications. The new round is expected to enter into service in the 2020s along with the M1A2 SEP v3/4 main battle tanks. In February 2017 Orbital ATK was selected to complete the development of the AMP by 2019-2020. The first XM1147 rounds were ready for fielding in January 2021.

I sure hope it is, because I bought 200 of them for my homemade 120mm cannon i'm mounting on a GMC.

depleted uranium really isnt a radiological hazard like you seem to imply in the video. Instead its a hazard based on its toxicity. its more toxic than lead, and its much more water soluble than lead, plus its tendency to burn which produces highly soluble and bioavailable uranium salts.

So, basically it is a 120mm Artillery round. It is electronically programable similar to how the 155mm Artillery rounds are manually programable. Makes sense and is kind of a roll back to WW2 and early Cold War technology with a modern kick. I like it! Seems like we made so many different rounds to solve problems that we created logistical problem that this round solves by going back to simplicity.

I think that these are being used by Ukraine. They have a video of some kind of shot on a company of men and they said that it looks like a laser beam hits the company and they all are dead. I think that they are using it for an antipersonnel munition because they also say that there was a lot of dust blown up when it hits, just like the video you show does during the air burst function of the shot . If it wasn't that round it was one just like it. I know that they are using upgraded tanks sent from Poland and Germany with the same size barrel so maybe they have been able to use them in a tank supplied by a NATO country that can shoot that round. Regardless I know that the way it acted was the same way that the round shown in your video was exactly the same. Glory to Ukraine

20th century was survival of the fittest. 21st century is survival of the most adaptable. Dual purpose everything is the name of the game.

It is not rocket assisted, that is the tracer burning out of the back. You'll see the same thing in slow motion videos of all Abrams ammunition, with the exception of the Cannister round. I have not had the pleasure of shooting this round yet, but this thing is pretty damn awesome.

I wonder if the reason there is less visible explosive devastation because of the airburst function. The increased amount of fragmentation pieces in every round could mean they have a lower bursting charge. But then it also begs the question, if all those fragmentation pieces still exist in the warhead when it blows up, how much more devastating is it going to be after it penetrates a target? Or depending on the type of programmed charge will it change from an airburst scatter to a self forging penetrator making it more useful against medium armored targets?

The shot that hit the truck would have been more impressive, to me, if the round went through the engine block.

I think what you’re calling “reduced lethality” might actually have been on purpose to reduce collateral damage. Just my opinion you could be right. But from what I know of regarding warhead development, I suspect that one of the first upgrades to this round will be improved capabilities against armored and fortified targets, such as bunkers and armored vehicles (including MBT’s). I know that the JMEWS warhead mounted on Tomahawk cruise missiles is like this, able to engage a wide variety of targets, from ground troops to hardened structures and vehicles so it makes sense for this round to gain those capabilities

Matt, the flare isnt a rocket motor. That would cause inaccuracies in impact point and as you know tanks are zeroed. That's a tracer burning. As for loadouts on US tanks, the loader will typically organize his ammo racks to his liking. The case bases have markings or we would use a grease pen to mark the bases so we remembered what each round was. Over the coarse of several days you might not remember the exact layout, and it helps if you are injured and have to be replaced so that the new loader can quickly know what he has and where they are. Pretty simple method to clear up the madness. Typical loaders know how to organize rounds so each type is in the optimal position to be loaded efficiently across the wide range of ammo used. With this round I'm sure it will be the same since case base ID cant be relied upon alone due to fading or wearing of the printing. If the base has a different color then that will completely eliminate a need for marking them but I'm pretty sure the base will be the same color as the Sabot base.

The K2 Black Panther has an indirect fire smart top attack AT round. It's fired in a high ballistic arc. When I arrives over the target it pops out a parachute and uses an explosively forged fragment munition to punch down through the top of the targeted vehicle.

The wall blast was at 80* obliquity, at least that’s what the video said, so it was striking at an angle and kinda throwing the sides of it off.

Cannister is a short range weapon. AMP has the cannister effect at range!!! That alone makes it a must have. Replacing HE, HEAT, STAFF and HESH with one round is indeed a game changer.

Note that the steel thickness of a heavy dump truck's bed walls (shown in video) can be thicker than a BMP's shell, so it does make a good cheep target.
