100% of my driving is commuting and cruising. I still chose the 4Runner. My 5 reasons: 1: 100% built in Japan. 2: Built to last. 3: Resale value. 4: Crazy Reliability. 5: Tons of after market options. Here’s a bonus one, 6: Very comfortable drive.
Do you agree with him in this video about the cruise control, I currently have a 14 Ram 1500 Sport that is rusting away like you wouldn't believe it's fully loaded it's incredibly comfortable on the road but I'm done with American vehicles, anyway back to the original question is he accurate with the cruise control statement, thank you for your answer
Chris W I had a Ram 1500 as well, mine was a 2015. I was extremely happy to get rid of it. Even though I lost a ton of money on it because American vehicles are trash and deprecate like no tomorrow. I don't agree with him on the cruise control. I don't use mine much because I live in Hawaii but the few times I have used it I experienced no issues.
Just got the 2021 and have no issues with cruise control. The adaptive works good. Apart from its not all-range cruise control, meaning you have to take over below 50kmh (or close)
Owning a 2020 4Runner I enjoy it. Highway is great, quiet, smooth, adaptive cruise control works well, it does up shift from od on hills. Gas is good 19.8 + at 75. Feels like a tank but smooth. Good tuning radius. Not too big for city driving or parking. The new infotainment system works very very well, touch screen ,directions, everything , no complaints at all.
I drive 99% highway driving and only off pavement driving is in the winter during several trips up to VT for skiing. Slap on winter tires and I’m good to go. Agree not the best driving exp compared to that of crossovers. But I’m gonna keep this thing for next 15 years unless I win the power ball.
I’ve known these were the best vehicles for a long time now . And the only thing that ever made me think twice was gas mileage. Other than that this is top notch.
Buy a Prius if you’re looking for great MPG. No one buys an SUV for the MPG. I’ve had two in the past 16yrs. The first had 263, 008 miles before I sold it for crazy money given it was 12yrs old and with that mileage. I live on the coast where I drive on the beach, and a few times a year get up into the mountains for non-extreme rock crawling trail rides. Hands down this vehicle is damn near bullet proof. I believe this is the last body on (truck) frame SUV out there. All the rest are unibody. As for the responsiveness a big part is the gas pedal (electronics). I purchased an after market rig approximately 18 months ago that lets the user set the response for different driving scenarios. It works perfect. The 4runner- buy it, use it and enjoy.
Do a review in 15 years and 300k miles vs a chevy or ford or jeep of the same year and this thing will still be running strong and the others will probably be in the junk yard
Robert Quattrini it is. And it has a bulletproof transmission too. Guess what. It’s a Toyota built transmission. Same ones that are in the older Landcruisers and Hilux’s. It’s funny because Jeep’s most reliable vehicle is only reliable because it’s got Toyota parts
Justice9111 I refer you to my comment to the other cherokee owner. Your cherokee has a Toyota transmission. Only reason it’s actually decently reliable. And it’s still not as reliable as a real Toyota
I traded a 2008 Highlander for a 2011 4 Runner 4 WD why, well the Highlander 2WD was great in every way but the looks and the extra room of the 4 Runner and a SUV that holds it's value more than anything on the road does make sense to me. Living in Florida I will never use the 4 WD but just having the power and it's resale value. OK , the dealer price was $ 18,000 it was a one owner with a clean carfax 111,000 miles which shows that Toyota's do not depreciate much for a 8 year old SUV price is high but that's because they are built so good , the engines last for ever at 78 it will last me a lifetime. I get about the same gas mileage Highlander 20.5 MPG 4 Runner 19 mpg , thanks for your review
I have put over 97K miles (averaging over 3K/month) on my 2016 Trail Edition and still have no regrets! My 3rd Year anniversary will be during Memorial Day Weekend (USA) so I've spent a lot of time in the driver's seat. This is a fantastic vehicle for the right person. I think/know some of the complaints people have about the 4Runner are way overblown due people comparing their Corolla experiences to that with the 4Runner. All I can say is that with the amount of driving that I've done, I've had no issues. I've had the opportunity to take my Runner off road once (want to do it more often) and really got to it shine. Its one of the best all-around vehicles on the road in North America. What will be interesting to see is how much the 4Runner will change once the 6th Generation 4Runner hits the road. That being said, the 4Runner has treated me well and expect to be part of the +300K-mile club with relatively issue-free maintenance. Thanks for the video!
I had a 2013 Jeep JKU wrangler that I used for overlanding and as an adventure vehicle. It was not reliable. in 76,000 miles it had the front axle seals replaced six times, the front drive shaft replaced, the valve train replaced on the engine and suffered from the dreaded casting sand issue in the cooling system. Oh, when I traded it in it still had both front axle seals leaking. My 2017 TRD Off Road now has 47,800 miles on it and runs like new with no issues. I plan on keeping this vehicle fro a long time.
As a hopefully soon to be 4runner owner, I sincerely appreciate your honesty regarding its faults. The common theme I'm noticing is the 4runner is not the best at one thing, but it's great at everything it does. And it's incredibly reliable. Thank you for the informative video!
I have a 2014 trail edition 4runner with the kdss...absolutely NO REGRETS! I love it.my 2nd 4runner. This review nails it. It is SOLID. NO ISSUES. This thing is a serious factory built off roader. Safe, handles good, decent ride with good power and massive peace of mind. Not perfect..but haven't found a vehicle that is yet. 4runner for life!
Great video, probably the most honest straight-up review that I have watched about the 4Runner. I'm on my 4th Tacoma 4X4 with a camper shell that I have used for hunting-fishing-camping and not one of ever failed me. I don't need or want a truck anymore so I will be getting a 2020 4Runner TRD Off-Road 4X4 premium. Thanks again for a great outdoor video !
Just saying, doesnt look like he changed his tires to the appropriate type for the application he was using them in. Tires mean everything. Hwy use and trail use. I'm looking to buy something 16' and up myself.
few things you forgot to mention: this is a frame on body truck . not very many are anymore. also, as far as the headlights go, if you need to replace it , it will be alot cheaper than having to replace an led style headlight. this trucks are meant to be utilitarian vehicle but because modern car buyers need creature comforts toyota must comply. 30 years down the road this thing will have most of everything still in good working order, maybe not the entertainment system but anything mechanical.
Great honest review! I too have a 2018 4Runner. I’ve taken it camping through 4X4 recommended trails, and it performs like a champ. It’s perfect for camping and other outdoor adventures because of reliability, capability offroad, and storage for gear. I agree that the entertainment system is not great but I changed out all speakers, added a sub, and amps and now I’m happy. I also added SSO sliders, LFD crossbeams, and a Thule roof cargo box. Overall, I’ve been super satisfied with the 4Runner. I only drive it on the weekends for adventures like camping and hiking (we hike every weekend). It’s perfect for my outdoor lifestyle.
Excellent review of the 2018 5th generation 4Runner TRD Off Road Premium! I purchased the 2020 TRD Off Road Premium and love it. You're right - this is an "Adventure Vehicle" and that's what I bought it to do. I'm having sooooo much fun with this vehicle!
As a 4Runner owner i wish Toyota could see ur review i agree in every single statement but also i don’t want them to do major changes to the 4Runner it looks great and everything works perfect for me except those few little things you mentioned.....but is still for me the best all around!! Im a man so i wouldnt drive a pilot or highlander or traverse 😂😂 nice review!!
Just traded a 14 Jeep Grand Cherokee in on a SR5 P. Jeep in 110,000 miles, multiple CV joints, bearings, new radiator, new oil cooler. Heat never really worked great in winter, would blow cold air. Hoping this 4runner does so much better than the Jeep. Could not swallow the repair bills and the HUGE 1st year depreciation on the Jeep, its insane.
2019 TRD Off Road owner, all stock, and just drove 1500 miles with cruise control worked fine for me. But can see what you mean when climbing grades it will gear down... but all my vehicles do this. Pretty much agree with rest of your comments. I just climbed 13,000 feet (top of the rocky mountains) with mine and it did it with ease... Nice video!
Great review on this truck, I will agree that after driving different SUV's... none will outlast this truck!!! Not the smoothest ride... but the best dependability... and that it's what matters to me!!! I love my 2017 4runner!!!
👍🏼 Nice overview! I have a 2018 TRD Off-Road Premium 4Runner with 60k miles on it now - I’ve put on average 27k miles on it every year since I got it in Feb 2019, with only 6k miles on board. I’ve taken in off-roading many times to UT, CO, AZ, CA, NV, and all over the west coast and the PNW. Have had absolutely ZERO issues with it. I get 17.8mpg. Super happy with the build quality, the seats, highway comfort, terrain management capabilities, ample cargo, heated seats, rear sliding window, etc. I don’t mind the infotainment system - it has satellite radio and Bluetooth. What more do you need? (I use Gaia for navigation in the boonies, phone Maps in the city). I’ve used Pedal Commander for more responsive throttle, but not any more - I don’t need to race, but enjoy the journey. The 4Runner is NOT underpowered - those who complain expect a Lamborghini, yet they take everything but the kitchen sink with them when going outdoors, piled inside, behind and on top of it, plus steel bumpers, RTT, dragging a trailer, etc., etc. Ridiculous! The 4Runner is a solid, reliable, capable, dependable machine, built to perform and last. Remember it’s built in the very same factory as the legendary LandCruiser that has dominated the market in the toughest climates and most demanding terrains, worldwide, for decades! The 4Runner taps into that very legacy and technology, same work ethos and Japanese obsession with reliable quality. 👏🏻💪🏼 4Runner 4Ever! I’ve put a 3” Toytec lift on it, full RCI armor, Shrockworks rock sliders, Smittybilt winch, Rhino-Rack Pioneer roof rack, Genesis Offroad dual battery system, ARB Twin Compressor, TJM snorkel, and KO2s. It’s the perfect setup for me, with comfortable sleeping platform in the back (I’m 6’), 20L fridge, water system, pump shower, and 100W solar panel...
*This is the best 4Runner review.* I have watched about 30 videos and have test driven four 4Runners including one with big off road tires. This video summarizes everything I have experienced. My excitement is fading away because of the fact that it is sluggish on the freeway (you cant off road n speed anyways), mpg is not the best. Without the sunroof it feels small even though its roomy in the back but ceiling height is not much unless you compare it to a convertible. I dont do much off road, maybe a highlander would be better for me.
I kinda sounded negative on it, but after 20,000 miles countless off road adventures, and generally beating the snot out of it, if my 2 big complaints are the radio and the cruise co, I would say thats pretty good!! Love everything else about the truck
@@RiverRatsTotalOutdoors You did not come off as a fanatic. Nor a hater. That is where I come from as well. I have done ALL the terrains, ALL the weather conditions on the stock tires. Only thing I have done is put on sliders to give it the protection it needs there. It goes everywhere a Jeep JL goes. And back with Zero issues. What more can you ask for from a vehicle? Capable and reliable. I would only perhaps argue that your opening salvo about it not being the best at 1 given task, yet better than anything else at a blending of all tasks is a bit.. well it is honest, but I would add that NO vehicle, including the Jeep JL is going to do it all better than any purpose built vehicle. The SHERP right now is arguably the most off road worthy vehicle on the planet. Doing everything but legal street driving. But you are going to pay heavy for it and are limited to trailering it to off pavement environments. Coming up on 2020 and there are vehicles now that are going to rival our TRD's in capabilities, however, it remains to be seen if they will rival our reliability.
"Regular TRD Off-Road" has navigation. Also the Premium has integrated remote garage door openers. Which is 1 thing I wish mine had.(same years as yours) But I chose KDSS to enhance the stability on road and articulation off road. It is worth every penny. You nailed the honesty mark with how it is not 100% for 1 specific thing, but 100% great for an all around adventure vehicle. Hence 1 of the trim level titles being called "Venture." Though I would not buy that particular trim. lol I have managed 19-22 mpg on the stock tires for highway driving. Which blows my mind, considering it is not estimated to do better than 20. Only modification I have done is put on rock sliders from White Knuckle. Everyone has their preferences for different reasons, but they were perfectly priced and more than solid for the terrain WE go on/through. WE cannot find a better all around SUV for the price point. However, that being said, knowing what I know now, I might advise people to buy a 1-5 year old if they truly wanted to save a few more penny's. IF people can find them, there is nothing wrong with taking a pre-owned. It is not like buying a Jeep or Chevy or something else people beat on that they turn in after it is showing wear and tear. For people who don't flip vehicles but once every 10 years or more, this fits the bill. Imagine if we could have bought this as a Hybrid back then? I see the day this will happen. And maybe.. just maybe.. on that day, I will consider parting with our 2018.
FINALLY 🎉🎉!!!! A great mixture of real semi-Southern mix of trails !!! Meaning i get so bored watching review after review of "simple" dry dusty trail test reviews.. Thanks for an honest *multiple trail review !
Enjoyed the review, agreed with most point except never experienced the cruise control issue that you had. Have a 2018 off road and have put 42000 kms on it, and couldn’t love it more! Toyota is the BEST vehicle manufacturer in the world!!
You will not regret it. I have the TRD offroad and it's also fine on the highway. And the cruse control is fine. I have no clue where the guy is driving to call it useless.
Hay buddy thanks for the brutally honest personal review. Always like to hear different opinions. I think you would agree (and you also mentioned it) that a lot of the problems you had on the highway is because of the BFs you put on. I heard that you also lifted it. The stock form and tires are very comfortable on the highway and have a very good grip ( I always challange it). I live in minnesota so there is a lot of snow where the 4runner shines, but it's not very hilly. I do take it to wisconsin a lot and it is very hilly in places. So I have no clue what you are saying about the cruse control. But I can imagine that whith these tires and a very hilly road you can have this situation you described. Juat wanted to make sure people that are going to buy the car would get a different note from a stock form. Thanks!
@@ozibeno4574 I live in MN also, the trip to North Carolina was on a completely stock truck, and the cruise sucked then and sucks now, the tires had a little negative effect but it was awful stock. I don't know if it is just some vehicles but I definitely am not the only one who has complained about the cruise. I have heard people bitch about 2020's doing the same thing. And just for a little background I am a commercial driver and have 2 million miles under my belt in every size truck you can imagine, from highway to off road I can say without a doubt this is the most annoying cruise I have dealt with.
@@RiverRatsTotalOutdoors I have a 2011 with 285k on it, I absolutly agree about the cruise, I hate it. Also mine has a tendency to downshift and accelerate past the speed I set it to. It took me by surprise a bunch of times when in a steep climb with a curve at the top. I have KO2s but it's been the same with every tires I had on it. But it's the only complain I have with it after 9 years, I still enjoy driving it everyday. If I won the lottery I'd buy a limited for highway and a TRD Pro for off road lol
Same vehicle, same year... same opinion. Love this thing. For me, it hits all the sweet spots in terms of capability and reliability. Digging that heritage grill, man!
Still love my 14 trail edition. Yes the headlights need upgrading, but this thing is reliable af and I still get compliments and I still enjoy even my daily commutes with it. Had a 2000 Sr5 in millennium silver..loved it also. Wish I could've kept both.
Great review. I just bought a Silver, 2024 4Runner TRD Off Road Premium...just like yours. In my case, I did the "Poor man's Supercharger"....TRD PRO K&N Cold Air Intake, Magnaflow Overland Exhaust and Banks Pedal Monster...approximately $2000 for everything. In stock trim, the Runner did fine pulling my landscape trailer with my Yamaha Grizzly in it with gas cans, ice chests, and all our gear, etc. up the Grapevine (highway 5) and into the mountains near Lake Isabella, Ca. But after the additions, Holy smokes! It's an entirely different vehicle. Highway gas mileage improved from an average of ~19.1 to about 21mpg at 75mph. With the Banks set to Sport Mode at 80%, the Runner has some serious giddyup! Way more fun to drive. However, even before this bolt ons, the 4Runner has plenty of power, but it is engineered for a smooth and tame delivery. I went with the 2024 instead of waiting for the 2025 b/c I simply do not want to deal with a 4 cylinder with turbos. I think that's a bad move on Toyota's part.
Traded in my M3 for my new '21 TRD/Off Road couple months ago. Doesn't feel slow, feels like a 2+ton suv. Best vehicle ever, Carvana offered me literally 10k more than I payed for it a few days after I bought it lol. People are now paying sky-high for used ones it's caraaazy
You just sold me. I have a 2000 four wheel drive 4Runner but sent it back to the old country for when I go visit home(Belize). I miss camping in California and off-roading. Was debating the trd off-road pro but this one in silver looks perfect and matches my old one:)
I wish more reviews were like yours. I really appreciate you showing the vehicle moving and show casing its abilities off road while your talking instead of talking and only showing the vehicle every so often not moving at all like most reviewers. Also your honesty on the subject of comparison to other similar suv's. Love the forerunner but I was more of a R50 Pathfinder guy. Wish they made them like they used to. You got my thumbs up on this one.
Current a 2015 4runner Trail and has given zero major issues. Change my own oil, differential fluids, wipers and air/cabin filters. Had tires changed to Falken WildPeaks and its unstoppable in most road conditions. Only issue was two rusted skis plate bolts. Other than that I'm happy. Waiting the next generation 4runner to come out.
That's so crazy the first place you said went was OBX because I was telling my dad about how I want a 4Runner but don't really need one here too often and he said yeah we don't get much snow but we could take it all over OBX where normal cars can't go (OBX has been our family vacation spot for over 10 years) enjoy your ride for the 500k miles or more it'll last!
Great review. You covered a lot. In fact, when I look at where you've been with it, you've covered a lot. Exactly what this truck is for. When you get your lift done, snap in a pair of $35 HIDs from Amazon. You'll never complain that the factory charged you $1500 for LED headlights. It was the first thing I did on my 4R. Also, if anyone wants entertainment, you can get a good size tablet from Costco to mount on your dash, for under $200. Not $2000 from the factory. And third, my '15 Limited was $44k before tax. Take a look around and good luck with that.
This is a great review. Honest and true. I have a 2013 and I admit I bought it for the off road swag. Lol. I don’t really wheel, other that a ride on the beach. I have it on fuel maverick 20’s with nitto terra grapplers and I just love the look and feel of it. 4runners, FJ cruisers Jeeps, Land cruisers, etc are just not for everybody. You have to like that kind of stuff to like that kind of stuff! I almost bought a Highlander. So glad I didn’t. Thanks for the honest review. I pretty much agree with everything you said.
Nice review. I drove my 3rd gen 4runner to Moab from L.A. with a stuck thermostat, wasn't getting flow to the lower engine and still made it there, obvious I didn't know this till I was in Arizona on the way to Utah. No shops were opened during this time getting to Utah got it changed out. Got back to L.A. and had Toyota check it out and nothing was bad. They are so reliable. My mpg average on the trip was 26.7 , remember this suv has 180hp and 200tq I bet those numbers are a lot lower after 20 years.
@@theshowtime2375 I have a 97 limited 4x4 e locker and a 00 limited 4x4 e locker. 97 is my off roading beast and the 00 is casual 4x4 hahaha , 97 has 291,000 and 00 has 270,000 I'm the 3rd owner on both been with me 3 years 97 and 2 years 00. I do preventative maintenance on them. Harder stuff like timing belt kits my mechanic does.
Just4Fun Sweet! Another 3rd gen lover! I just bought a 01 4Runner sport with center diff lock. I love it, my 2014 accord is outside and I keep the 4Runner In the garage. 🙂
@@theshowtime2375 funny you say that. I have a 2018 Camry xse outside the garage and my 97 inside right in the center with a lot of space on both sides. My 2000 is outside, right in front of my house.
I also have an 18 off road. Mine is magnetic grey with 3 inch fox lift and 33's. I could give a shit about highway driving efficiency. I listen to tunes, take in the views and take my time. I simply love off roading, trail riding, exploring, camping and hiking...and this thing excels at and is made for that stuff. I will drive this one into the ground and get another!! Great review, thanks for sharing!
I am thinking the same thing, excels at everything I love t do. Every time I think about trading it in I slap my self and go off road and remember why I love it
@@iandominic3385 awesome. You’ve treated it well. Do you always drive in 4WD in the city? Also when you drive it in snow do you ever engage the 4Lo? How have you looked beyond that annoying MPG?
Thank you, i have been beating myself up for about 6 months over the trd offroad and the trd pro because mainly i wanted the amazing voodoo blue and all of the little extras that come on the pro which really do add up if you try to buy after market but after watching this you made me realize i dont need everything the pro offers. I mainly need a family suv that can go on adventures occasionally being in the military i travel A LOT and go to a lot of places and different environments such as desert snow etc. so the 4runner trd offroad fits perfectly into my life and i can just slowly make it look like the trd pro over time and pocket about $10,000 so thank you for this video. Also now i realized the voodoo blue is hands down the best looking paint i have ever seen on a vehicle but if it is meant to be offroad why bother so much with paint when its just going to get scratched up and chipped anyway?? I think white is king because scratches and blemishes are harder to spot on white than any other color
Ok ... so I scrolled through a decent amount of comments ... and although I appreciate the honesty and all that ... I think this video is perfect for different reasons. ... ... it’s NOT a crossover, it’s not a car, and JUST BARELY, it’s not a jeep (and I mean not what 80% of the jeeps out there are) I’ve been from beach to mountain top to ocean ... it will do it all without hesitation. Period. Want gas mileage? Don’t buy a 4Runner. Want advanced electronics ... don’t buy a 4Runner. Depending on the model ... want a vehicle you could stick your GF or wife in with the kids and have it fully do everything in its power to protect them? ... don’t buy anything other than a full time 4Runner ... most will only do what you tell them to do beyond standard traction and stability. They won’t engage all wheels when needed ... they won’t drive for you. IT IS THE BEAUTY OF OWNING THIS VEHICLE! you need to know a little about how crap works to have any kind of enjoyment from it. Nearly 50,000 on my 18 Trd premium and this truck will be with me til it dies ... roof rack ... agreed ... so get a new one! Headlights ? Add HID’s and be done with that argument forever ... Highway driving ? It’s a damn body on frame SUV ... realize what your buying bro. And I already covered gas mileage ... I have 34in 285/75’s on mine and wouldn’t change them for the world ... I’m fact I want to go bigger ... I have no issue with it ... sure the gas mileage dipped ... expected though ... does she spin up to high revs to get up a mountain at 75 ... sure does ... but it’s no issue ... and power? Never had an issue with power ... like he said ... not a race car ... and if you treat it like one you will either break it or get yourself killed ... it’s an SUV ... don’t be dumb So like I said ... from MOAB’s hells revenge to some of idaho and Washington’s even some of Canada’s off-road trails ... it has never been disappointing in any way. Having said all that ... I’ll jump on the bash train ... could they really not add a sensor to let you know that you left the rear window down? Lol ... I mean seriously ... will alert you that the sunroof is open ... but not the rear window ... common 😂😂😂 ... do I have any other gripes really ... ... ... Humm ... ohhh ... why on gods green earth can I not open the hatch from within ... that would be nice too ... but other than those two tiny little things ... it’s the best vehicle I’ve ever owned
Pretty much agree with everything you said, after 2 more years and now 75,000 miles on it I still love this vehicle it does everything I want it to and then some. I will stand by my comments on the cruise, its still sucks, and the Toyota entune system is complete trash, but that is easily replaceable. On my only trip this year with 32" e rated ko2's that are considerably heavier than the stock shit tires that come on it I average 21 mpg on a couple tanks, I know there are vehicles that get better, but they couldn't do what I did out there. I get the hatch not opening from the inside, that also gets me, also on the rear window thing, mine is so heavily tinted its easy to look in the rear view mirror and see it is down before I get out.
I have the same 4Runner as you - 2018 off-road premium. I also have a 2005 sr5 with the v8. As far as power goes, if you drive a 4th generation with the 4.7 v8 you will quickly see the limitations of the v6. The v8 has so much more available torque. I wish Toyota would have offered the 4.6 v8 as an option.
I get why they didn't, why would you buy a GX if they did. But my son also has a 4th gen with the V8 and it is a good rig, but besides power it definitely has its shortcomings.
@@RiverRatsTotalOutdoors people say engine water pump goes bad every 40-60k miles? I mean mpg very close gx460 gets around 17 mpg mix driving and runner around 18mpg, do you think V8 gx460 is as reliable as 4runner?
Lucky You I don’t think. I am 10000% sure it is reliable. We have the 4.6 in the LandCruiser and it’s the best selling option. Sells more than 5.7, 4.0, and diesel. And we have a 2016 gx460
@@zacharydeber7388 no need to drop that much! check out dobinsons!! i got their 2.5/1.5 lift and its perfect! i think i paid less than $900 for everything shipped. if you can, wait til a holiday sale where there is 10-15% off and/or free shipping. thats what i did. i also installed it myself because it's way too expensive to get it installed. i youtubed a bunch of install vids. took me 2 days but i did it all on my own. FYI that 20 mpg is with a lift, stock size all terrains, and sliders. in the city, i'm 17-18mpg. in regards to tires. there are so many awesome brands out there. i like all terrains since 95% of my driving is city and the other 5% is offroad/trails/camping etc. i kept the stock size because i don't need anything bigger to be honest for my personal use. bfg ko2, falken wildpeak, general, nitto and cooper also have good all terrains.
Wouldn’t trade my 4runner for anything else. I have a blacked out 2018 , threw a 2 and a half inch lift on it with 32 inch ko2’s, put the trd skid plate on mine as well as the trd pro sema wheels and sliders. I’m perfectly happy with it how it is now. I was debating a tacoma or 4runner but decided the interior cargo protection compared to a truck bed was better for me having a lot of gear I lug around like my drums. Rides great on and off road and it’s definitly the best looking suv on the road. The 5 speed is dated and mpg isn’t great BUT I will say it has tamed my need for speed that I had growing up. Used to drive a car and sped around like a madman but the 4Runner kinda forces me to never go above 80. Obviously you can but it doesn’t sit at a comfortable low rpm and feels like I’m straining the engine if I go above 80 but that’s the fastest i go. Usually I stay around 65-70 and that’s a comfortable speed for the 5th speed so it’s kinda good for me. Having the 2 and a half inch lift and bigger tires I don’t take turns fast at all and just drive chill now since I got the 4Runner.
Fantastic review! We're looking T the 2020 TRD off-road premium and now toyota has updated the touch screen size, the navigation system as well as added skid plates along the bottom of the drive train. If im not mistaken the motor and trans are the same but it makes it up in how it handles off-road. Now toyota also paid attention to the interior of the 2020 with different packages being offered. Great review and thanks for beifrank and honest!
Great review from a real user. I especially like the one year update. Keep that going please. I'm considering either a 4 Runner or Land Cruiser, but I think the LC is a bit too big for some trails. I rented a 4 Runner recently in Jackson Hole and loved it. Drove it from Salt Lake City to JH and then to Yellowstone over a 7 day stay. What a great SUV.
The Land Cruiser is amazing though. I have a 200 series and the cool box is nice. The LC only has 112" wheelbase so it's not that big. I have an old Ford ranger 4x4 supercab and it has a 126" wheelbase, so even compared to a midsize pickup the 200 series land cruiser feels small to me. Just slightly wider than the runner. It has a little more room inside as well and very heavy built. I have KO2's D load range so they are not too heavy and have well over 50k on them now.
Doug Fleenor The Land Cruiser sure are nice and you would never run out of power with that nice big engine. I have the tundra and the forerunner I would love to add the Land Cruiser to my collection. I just love the awesome quality of the Toyota products. I do all my own service so you can see how well everything is built underneath.
Great and honest review. I watched almost all reviews about the 4Runner and GX 460, and opted for a used 2016 GX for a slight cheaper price. But it comes with all the goodies, V8 engine, heated and cooled leather seat etc, much smoother ride. But I do only occasional off road adventures and hunting trips. I'd say, if you're hardcore off road, get the 4Runner, otherwise get a used GX.
You should get Chevy ZR2 Diesel. It’s amazing. Diesel reliability, diesel fuel economy, diesel torque, ZR2 has the best off road tools. DSSV shocks make the best ride on and off road. Front and rear locking differentials. Amazing approach angles with underbody protection and rock sliders. Truly the best vehicles that I have ever driven. As far as towing, it has built in trailer brake controller and Exhaust brake (game changer). 25 mpg average. A true adventure machine!
No offense but that is the last off road vehicle I would buy, that diesel reliability is false advertisement with any of the new breeds of diesels, they are maintenance hogs and I am not dealing with Def issues on any vehicle, let alone one that I take into the middle of nowhere for fun. I also have yet to see them do anything that my 4runner can't do. 4runner has better reliability, is more comfortable , more ground clearance, better after market support and no Chevy reliability and build quality issues. I also have never ran into a situation off-road where I needed more torque, there is a reason why they were basically giving them away last year, sticker prices over $50g and you could drive one off the lot for like 36 with all the incentives
Great vid love 4runners....I have a 2019 Passport AWD Touring with a Traxda 3.5" front and 3" rear lift kit with KMC 721 wheels and 265 65r17 Goodyear Duratracs. I also threw on a skid plate for added protection. Living in Socal I knew I was going to be a super weekend warrior more sand and snow not so much hard core rock crawling. Love it so far got 20k on it average mpg is 23-24 on the hwy. The 20" wheels that came with it are evil!
Since I initially leased it ,like a dumbass, I ended up getting stuck with the tax when I bought it out right last fall, but otherwise it was 38,900 after tag and title
It is a little pricey but really it is in a class of its own. Piece of mind when you have 150 k miles and are out in the middle of no where I wouldn’t think twice to trust it to get me home.
Great review I am likely getting the same TRD OR premium 2021. No KDSS? What lift kit and how much lift 2-3”. Any advice before buying? I am also planning to get better tires nothing crazy probably stock size more trail friendly. Totally new to off roading amateur probably weekend but mostly daily work commuter
the reliability alone puts it above other suvs everything else is just extra in my opinion. i'm a jeep driver and jeeps get very sketchy once you get over 100k miles. 4runners routinely get to 400k miles on original engine and trans.
4Runner & Land cruiser are the top 2 vehicles built from Toyota. They can outlast any American brand up to 5 times.. some people have more thank 700k miles with same engine and transmission.. you will need 10 jeeps to hit those mileages.
They used to offer the v8 but it took away sales from the much more profitable gx; my buddy as th same engine in his tundra and he says it just guzzles gas (14 mpg or less)
I also think the 4.0 is adequate for power…until I drive a Lexus GX. Same chassis and heavier but so much more power and smoother. I really wish Toyota would have given the 4Runner the option of the 4.6 V8 six speed used in the GX.
I have a 2013 sr5 and I don't go off-road. I got it bc I live in ny and deal with bad blizzards and rough roads in the winter. Its the best vehicle I've ever owned!
Great video! I really appreciate hearing both the good and the bad. I screwed up and put on E-Rated KO2s on my 4Runner. They are just too heavy for the car.
You need the right tires to go off-roading. You need Street tires to maximize on street performance. That truck, unlike most, has the potential to last 20-30 years and 1,000,000 miles.
I agree, I have never had a vehicle that handles deep snow with ease like this one, ditch the factory tires for some real tires and it is a beast in the snow
Couldn’t agree more. If, and I mean IF, you put the pedal all the way to the floor, you will quickly see just how much power the 4Runner has. I don’t think most people ever do that. Perhaps Toyota needs a “sport” mode to change the throttle curve.
I have a 2007 limited with 171k on it and the only thing ive done is an alternator. In february i bought a "new" 2019 trd off road predator and its literally my 3rd child. Had it leveled 3/2 and nitto ridge grapplers and cannot wait to take it off road. Only thing i am disappointed in is the infotainment system since 2020 had apple car play.
There is NO "thousands of other SUV's that are better than 4Runner". In any sense. I use cruise control all the time, and find nothing annoying about it. I do wholeheartedly agree with your take on entune though! A CD (not even DVD!) in 2018 is beyond ridiculous. Just like a tape player in my 2004. No shit!
One of,if not the best vehicle of its type on the planet. The 4 Runner is a legend.
Brian I concur!
Agreed.
@@chrisw8415 I have two 4Runners - 2004 and 2018, and both cruise controls are flawless. Use them all time, not sure what he's talking about...
I never had a issues with cruise control.
Just got the 2021 and have no issues with cruise control. The adaptive works good. Apart from its not all-range cruise control, meaning you have to take over below 50kmh (or close)
You forgot the best thing when comparing it to other SUV’s. It holds its value way better than any of them.
And doesn’t break. Jeeps are trash.
And it’s a body on full frame.
@@b.d.3828 makes me wonder if AMC would of made them more reliable people often forget AMC was a major part in creating the earliest post WW2 Jeeps
The one reason I bought it....... it’s bullet proof
Yup! Get you there and back.
I drive 99% highway driving and only off pavement driving is in the winter during several trips up to VT for skiing. Slap on winter tires and I’m good to go. Agree not the best driving exp compared to that of crossovers. But I’m gonna keep this thing for next 15 years unless I win the power ball.
That is what it is all about Reliability key and go .....
Yeah, looks like you will keep it as I am planning on winning the power ball.
AGREED-- it's A TRUCK- NOT a damn crossover.. If I wanted a freakin cAR- I'd buya freakin CAR!!
Even then just get one that’s custom lol and a sports car lol 😂
Just sold my jeep for a 4runner, the jeep was just so unreliable, cant beat toyotas reliability and capability
I was just at the dealership checking out the 2020's and they had 3 wranglers on the lot that were traded in on 4runners
@@Bril_cream_21 what types of issues did you have at 58k?
@@Bril_cream_21 why buy either if you do no off roading?
@@Bril_cream_21 lol sad.
@@Bril_cream_21 jeeps aren't meant to be driven on paved roads. You just bought the wrong vehicle for your intended use.
I appreciate your honesty. Every video that I've seen never talks about the negative features of this truck, thanks!
I have 2 of these , like a sore pecker , can't beat it !
Take a break😂
Don’t worry about gas.. just get it! Worth it when you only worry about gas and not mechanical problems.
The money you pay for gas will weigh out way outweigh buying something that's gonna be a piece of shit and require tons of money and maintenance
Do a review in 15 years and 300k miles vs a chevy or ford or jeep of the same year and this thing will still be running strong and the others will probably be in the junk yard
I'd give you 2 thumbs up if I could. People don't understand this at all. There simply is no comparing 4runners to those throwaway vehicles
My 1999 Jeep Cherokee Xj has almost 400,000 miles and is just like new...4.0 inline motor is a Beast.
Furn333 lol yeah and run like shit and need a trip to the local autozone every couple months
My 2005 has 225k and runs perfect
It’s pretty much a tank! It goes everywhere 😮🔥
One year with a 14’ FJ, hard to believe I ever had sedans.
I have 2019 4runner off road premium and it’s the most reliable and a beast driving in thick road snow in Alaska!
few things you forgot to mention: this is a frame on body truck . not very many are anymore.
also, as far as the headlights go, if you need to replace it , it will be alot cheaper than having to replace an led style headlight.
this trucks are meant to be utilitarian vehicle but because modern car buyers need creature comforts toyota must comply. 30 years down the road this thing will have most of everything still in good working order, maybe not the entertainment system but anything mechanical.
body on frame
@@rockymountboy i guess youre right since the frame cant be ontop top of the body haha
Body on frame is coming back, the Jeep Wagoneer and or the Grand Wagoneer is going to be BOF (one or both).

Totally agree about the power. I’m coming from an old civic... and it’s great on power. People keep acting like it’s a race car
A 4Runner without scratches is one that never had any fun.
Excellent review, man. Thanks
Great in the snow.. 24 mpg highway... great reliability.. I feel safe and confident in my 2016 Toyota 4Runner Limited...
Estuardo Gutierrez LOL. That’s what I told my wife when she suggested those three vehicles and then she realized how right I was. Hahahaha
HAHAHA I love when people compare them to sports cars. Let me see your Mustang climb those hills. My runner is awesome!
SR5 doesnt have crawl control right? Imo this is essential on 4runner. Also kdss if possible.
Nice video!
just bought a brand new 2021 4 runner trd off road premium with KDSS for 42k. I'll be keeping it for 20 years at least.
42k OTD?
@@JP-gt8qr yea and sold it for 50

Put on 338,000 miles on a Tacoma over the last 14 years. Just bought used 19 4runner trd off road. Love it. Great review btw.
Thanks for being so real. Overall you gave me more confidence in the 4Runner.
A great mixture of real
semi-Southern mix of trails !!!
One of the better 4Runner reviews out there. Thanks.
Looking at a new 4RUNNER right now. Leaning toward a 2020 4Runner TRDPro in army green. Hopefully.
What did you get? SR5’s can do just as much, but without the lockers
Same vehicle, same year... same opinion. Love this thing. For me, it hits all the sweet spots in terms of capability and reliability. Digging that heritage grill, man!
Yeah, I like the grill to, I had to get it, there is like 2 other trd off roads in my little town now, I had to set my self apart....lol
Love my 2004 4runner SR5. nearly sixteen years old and still the strongest off roader i've owned
Good video dude! Loved the mix of constructive criticism and adventure footage. I think I want one.
Nissan should be ashamed of what the Pathfinder has become, used to be such a cool vehicle
This will definitely be my next vehicle!
This is one of the best real world reviews I’ve seen on the 4runner yet!
try watching jim/erin rose youtube channel you will be amazed 👍
Just4Fun what year is your 4Runner and how many miles does she have?
Every time I think about trading it in I slap my self and go off road and remember why I love it
I have 2017 limited in nautical blue I loved it best SUV I’ve ever own really good in snow and very reliable.
Agreed! Love mine. How many miles you put on it?
@@claudiacanales2662i’m currently at 75k miles.
Awesome review. Probably the most honest one I’ve seen yet. Thanks for posting.
Ok ... so I scrolled through a decent amount of comments ... and although I appreciate the honesty and all that ... I think this video is perfect for different reasons. ... ... it’s NOT a crossover, it’s not a car, and JUST BARELY, it’s not a jeep (and I mean not what 80% of the jeeps out there are)
I’ve been from beach to mountain top to ocean ... it will do it all without hesitation.
I have no issue with it ... sure the gas mileage dipped ... expected though ... does she spin up to high revs to get up a mountain at 75 ... sure does ... but it’s no issue ... and power? Never had an issue with power ... like he said ... not a race car ... and if you treat it like one you will either break it or get yourself killed ... it’s an SUV ... don’t be dumb
So like I said ... from MOAB’s hells revenge to some of idaho and Washington’s even some of Canada’s off-road trails ... it has never been disappointing in any way.
GX460 lexus has V8 is it reliable?
Very. Would look that way if I wanted to upgrade
@@RiverRatsTotalOutdoors people say engine water pump goes bad every 40-60k miles? I mean mpg very close gx460 gets around 17 mpg mix driving and runner around 18mpg, do you think V8 gx460 is as reliable as 4runner?
Lucky You
I don’t think. I am 10000% sure it is reliable. We have the 4.6 in the LandCruiser and it’s the best selling option. Sells more than 5.7, 4.0, and diesel.
And we have a 2016 gx460
awesome vid! i have the same except mine is just the non premium. i only have 265 ko2's and averaged 20.7mpg on a road trip in FL.
do you have a lift in your truck? looking for a decent pair of tires and don't feel like dropping 2000 on a lift kit.
I just bought the 4Runner Trd off road premium 2020 and I’m ready to test it
Fantastic review! Great review and thanks for beifrank and honest!
one of the best reviews ive seen on this truck. true real world/honest testing.
Looks so good. Just cannot stop looking at it
Just got a 2021 4Runner I love it
Great review from a real user.
What a great honnest review. Thanks for time you put into this.
I also have never ran into a situation off-road where I needed more torque, there is a reason why they were basically giving them away last year, sticker prices over $50g and you could drive one off the lot for like 36 with all the incentives
great, honest review. You really have done everything with this 4runner.
Thanks for posting. I just bought to 2020 SR5 a few days ago.
This is a really great review. Honest, direct, informative. Thanks for posting.
$38,900 after tax, tags, title and all of the other lovely fees? Really enjoyed your video, sir! I trust what you say and that is a good feeling.
Since I initially leased it ,like a dumbass, I ended up getting stuck with the tax when I bought it out right last fall, but otherwise it was 38,900 after tag and title
Great review! I love the fact that you didn't sugarcoat anything.Got a new sub👍
I wish Toyota would have kept the 4.7 V8 and thrown it in these. I bet the mileage would have been better and the engine is legendary for longevity
It is a little pricey but really it is in a class of its own. Piece of mind when you have 150 k miles and are out in the middle of no where I wouldn’t think twice to trust it to get me home.
hands down best review I have ever seen and I watch a lot of them . liked and subscribed
They should opt in the 4.6 V8 that’s in the GX460.👍🏼
They used to offer the v8 but it took away sales from the much more profitable gx; my buddy as th same engine in his tundra and he says it just guzzles gas (14 mpg or less)
Really a great review. I Have a Jeep Wrangler unlimited Jk now, but you just convinced me to buy a 4Runner.
I also think the 4.0 is adequate for power…until I drive a Lexus GX. Same chassis and heavier but so much more power and smoother. I really wish Toyota would have given the 4Runner the option of the 4.6 V8 six speed used in the GX.
Not the year I was looking for but I do appreciate the honest review 👍🏼
The main reasons buying this 4runner is off-roading capabilities and reliable.
I have a 2013 sr5 and I don't go off-road. I got it bc I live in ny and deal with bad blizzards and rough roads in the winter.
Its the best vehicle I've ever owned!
Really enjoyed watching your video I just purchased and sr5 premium and am super stoked about it I will definitely subscribe
My MR2 Turbo turns 30yo this year. With a little care these will too.
TWINK THE TROLL
I bought the old girl a new turbo for her birthday! Shhhhh
Pay a little extra and get the 3M films to protect your paint.
I have a Honda Pilot and it’s a POS. Not only that but Honda REFUSES to fix the piston rings, which are a known defect.
@@johngalt7818 2nd gen?
Tony Chau it’s a 2011. 1st gen were made in Japan and they’re MUCH better cars.
@@johngalt7818 got a 3rd gen. I doubt its going to age well. Paint is so thin/cheap it chips off looking at it.
The best damn snow truck out there.... with good tires
I agree, I have never had a vehicle that handles deep snow with ease like this one, ditch the factory tires for some real tires and it is a beast in the snow
hmmmmmm......... I haven't experienced anything like that with my cruise control. Even pulling a trailer.
No shit!
Good, objective review. I'm buying one within the next two weeks. Thanks!
