The craziest part of the story arguably is not her. It’s why he put up with her for as long as he did - his own trauma. They were trauma bonding. He even said she needed help and felt sorry for her. It makes you reflect more on mental health because what good is being in and out of prison going to be for her and the world. She needs lots of therapy and medication. I’ve heard she has NPD, BDP - seemingly stemming from childhood neglect as portrayed in the final scene. You’d feel better knowing she was getting the help she needs.

Gadd had already said his real life stalker did not go to prison, that it was resolved another way. This is Gadd’s story, it belongs to him, the shows he has produced drawing from his life have helped him heal. He’s turned the trauma in his life into a gift, kudos to him. Fiona stands to cash in as well now too, and it looks to me like shes already made a good start on this. Gadd’s account is open and honest, he bared all. He clearly has good human ethics and morals. Personally, I’m happy for his success. Let’s also not forget, he remains silent, whereas she has outed herself.

Myself and my husband encountered “Martha “ she used to drink in our pub that my hubby was the manager of. She would only talk to males and was quite rude to us women staff. She did annoy our regulars by trying to talk to them when they were just trying to have a quiet drink. She came in one day with a big satchel and pulled out loads of letters ect and spread them all over her table telling people she was a lawyer and she was working. Not once did she read any of them just had them there. She would only buy 1 drink and make it last for a good few hours. My hubby had to tell her that if she wanted to stay she would have to buy a drink which she wasn’t happy about but she did buy 1. Then We started getting complaints sent through from an anonymous customer saying that it was very noisy on Friday and Saturday nights. We had an idea who it was but couldn’t prove it. Then suddenly “Martha “ stopped coming in. We were told that she actually lived in the flats near our pub so we guessed it was her. She also used to put letters in her neighbours letter boxes complaining that they were noisy.

I was abused by someone who was supposed to care for me too and I don't know that it's necessarily stolckhome syndrome. For me personally I felt stuck but not necessarily empathy for this person. I'm sure there's degrees of Stockholm syndrome and not everyone's experience is the same . My experience was similar though I'm a way that I felt like there was no where to turn and no point in confrontation. Yes abuse can definitely mess with you but I'm not sure that he feels any empathy towards his abuser and usually that's a trait in stolckhome.i think that I see allot of myself in gadd and one trait in common is that we're both scared to be mean. Sometimes when we've gone through abuse we become nice to a fault because we don't want to treat others the way we were treated and we attract some awful people for sure.

@@user-gu7kk5zk2b and I'm sorry I'm not trying to assume anything or open any wounds I just know from experience how a sibling like her is awful and In my case until recently I felt super alone. Watching the show actually made me cry and realize I'm not the only one with a Martha. My brother would kind of stalk me too but not in the same way. He would try to find my social media and get my number . He can just not accept that I can't stand him, that's the narcissistic part of them. But if your experience was harmful to you in any way please know I'm sorry 😔 and you're not alone .

Its crazy how the guy was re acting the events the fact it actually happened to him is so brave of him and the actress who plays Martha did a amazing performance you get so lost in the character fully and almost forget this is a actress portraying a part. All this stuff is the type of thing where you think “this aint real”

I’m so late to the party, I just finished the show yesterday. During the first episode I was like ok, this interesting. Martha was being so weird to Donny and making him uncomfortable, then she sends him a Facebook friend request and I thought for sure he would decline it. But he presses accept and I was like WTF??? And then boom, the credits rolled and I was HOOKED. The whole show, every single episode, every single scene was riveting. Not one slow moment or uninteresting character. And I love that Donny is not a saint, he did many things that contributed to the trauma bond between him and Martha, which makes the show so complex and interesting. Richard Gadd is a brilliant writer and was unflinchingly raw and vulnerable as an actor, he deserved every Emmy he was awarded. He’s currently working on a new show, I think it’s called “Lion” and I will definitely be watching that.

i really liked the first 3 episodes when it was about "Martha" the actress jessica dunning stole the show. wasnt expecting the 4th episode and the whole depressing parts about grooming/abuse and him being a confused closet bi-sexual 🤷‍♀ found it a bit depressing. Although after reflecting on it its a powerful piece of tv because of that stuff. reminded me of trainspotting in a way.

Yep, some fair comments in there. Richard Gadd was put through hell and suffered. He put pen to paper and has made a few quid from it. The writing, and acting by Gunning, is so creepy when you see the Piers Morgan interview and compare the real person. Don't get me wrong, I think she clearly has mental health issues, but just because somebody is mentally ill it doesn't stop them being a total tool. I would say that a great part of a person's personality is formed by past traumas, but using those traumas to justify being shitty to others is not on, and she deserves to be called out for it.

Richard Gadd did something really brave by telling his personal stories, even if some of them could make people treat him unfairly. By sharing, he's not only helping himself feel better but also showing others that they're not alone if they're going through tough times too. It's like he's saying, "Hey, I've been there too." That kind of openness can make people feel more connected and supported.

I had to stop a few times with the man who really messed him up. Hard you watch. The part where he tells his parents was the best part. I like how the people weren't portrayed as one dimensional. There was more than one victim and he knew his choices weren't the best. Even the ending with the free drink suggests that victims often become abusers.

There's a saying that "comedy is tragedy plus time." It suggests that many comedians use humor as a coping mechanism to deal with their own personal struggles or hardships. So, while they may appear jovial and entertaining on stage, they may also carry a lot of sadness or pain when they're not performing. It's the irony of finding laughter in the midst of sorrow.
