The answer could have been straightforward and to the point "If it's a females-only prayer space, there would a be female Imam. If it's mixed with separate female prayers spaces as most mosques tend to be, then there will be a male Imam but there will be female leaders/teachers for various women's committees. Women are not allowed to lead men in prayers in Islam." That's it. Where the confusion here? That's just the rule of the religion. If the journalist is truly invested in having a fruitful discussion, then a broad discussion around women's role in chaplaincy can follow. The constant question dodging is what gets to me. We should also be prepared to answer such questions when in a media-facing role.
That would also probably cause a controversy. She might have wanted to maintain a peaceful image and gain the favour of the public, since she’s in front of a huge audience who’s majority might not agree with Islam. I think it was best to dodge the question. And whoever is truly interested in its answer, can definitely receive one from a scholar who feels more freedom in expressing his/her opinion, instead of someone who’s being purposefully cornered and pressured live on air.
I guess I must agree that Zara handled the interview well by dodging the unimportant questions that not have any meaning in what she do as a leader of MCB

I totally agree. Short answer would have been a Yes or a No. That would have ended the same question being asked over and over again. What the interviewer gains by whatever answer was given, I don't know.

Atleast in Islamic tradition, women are allowed to teach all children, regardless of gender, on how to read the Holy Quran.

Zero comparison. Anatomy and faith aren't comparable. Why aren't there woman Imams? Do they exist? What if a woman doesn't feel comfortable with a man in certain conversations? Does this lead to bias in relationship counseling? I really want to know. I am curious of the faith now.

Prayer have a set of rules one of it being that the leader of jamaa prayer should be a man but a woman can lead other women in prayer
Imams are not the same as Rabbis and Priests. Imams r simply figures who lead the prayers of the mosque. For example you can see children leading the prayers in Ramadan, quite a common scenario. It doesn’t mean Imam is someone who is authoritative or very knowledgeable, whereas Rabbis and Priests study for a long time to become what they are.
This “interview” was nothing short of a harassment. The interviewer herself lacks the knowledge what “Imam” even means.
It's a trap question. Why? So She want to portray Islam is bad to woman.

bolobolo bolo but you literally said “islam encourages men..”? no it’s not a problem that women cant have more than one spouse because these aren’t love marriages, and in fact any man that has more than one spouse due to “love” or lust is sinning. the role of men in islam is to provide for the family, a man might take in another woman to provide for her and her children if she has any. but this is if and only if he has enough money to provide for the entire family, and meets many other qualifications. a woman doesn’t marry more than one spouse because we’re not obligated to provide for men or their children.

also women can lead other women and children in prayer but if it’s a mix of adult men and women then men lead, i’m not gonna make an excuse for that

The answer is clear... weather she knew it, or not... she was asking for those who may not... which is the whole point of any Interview... if only believer's here spent less time in damage control as to actually speaking the truth regarding the word of Islam.. it would be more interest..

These are the same people who undercover with false mouth voice women independence/rights in Islam whereas if a woman chooses to cover herself, then they berate her as old fashioned or slave or go ahead in parliaments to ask for a ban on viel for women.

Pretend a baby, a 40 year old man, and 80 year old woman get the same type of medicine, that’s equality, but if they get different medicine based on how old they are, that’s equity because it decides how much you need based on YOU and not anyone else.

If you want to draw ppl towards islam, you cannot take a defensive attitude; your voice will be drowned out and the perpetuation of misconceptions will persist. The presenter wasn't showing any respect to our Zara Mohammed, I feel that if she were to be rude it'd be completely reasonable. Journalism should educate themselves about Islam before presuming roles as a female equivalent.
That smirk on Zara's face when she asked that question is something I guess every muslim ( in context to this video subject)can associate with. We're asked these types of questions and that too in a hostile manner so many times that we've become used to it. So everytime a question like this comes, that smirk comes unconsciously , internal thought , ' here we go again'.

Something I have always found deeply disturbing by this "for men and women to be equal, they need to be able to do the same things."
One of my friends worked in an overseas posting for a while. Several of her female colleagues were assaulted while out jogging on their days off. When she and the other women asked to be allowed to carry pepper spray, their workplaces Women's Feminist Club thing vehemently objected because "women are the same as men and they don't need an additional weapon to fight off a man." It was insane.
Not only does this kind of ideology devalue the incredible abilities unique to women, it also actively puts us at risk in numerous ways.
She should have answered with " I am sorry honey we do not change God guides and rules to fit your narrative. If God says man lead the prayer than they are and full stop"

A woman can be a amam only if women pray behind her. Because when we pray we have to kneel and bow down and by doing that we make such poses which may divert the attention of men praying behind women. That's why neither women are allowed to pray infront of men nor they can pray together as there is a physical contact of shoulder to shoulderwhen we pray together. But women can pray having a partition from men or pray behind men.

Lady, imam doesn’t equal pope or rabbi, imam is someone who leads in congregation prayer, anyone who knows how to pray can be an imam. In majority Muslim countries (specifically Pakistan) I have been to prayers where women lead 400 women and kids in prayer and that was just the mosque near my house. Can't believe they'll nit-pick everything just to feel better about themselves. Absolute cringe.

Which muslim country have you seen female imams?? A Musimah cannot lead men in prayer. And even if it was allowed I wouldn't definitely opt for my daughter to stick her bottom up into the faces of men standing behind her while bowing down and prostrating. It goes against modesty and maybe one reason why its not allowed in Islam.

@@toobad9295 Please keep in mind that modesty implies differently for both men and women in Islam. For example: Women are required to cover their entire body while men to only cover from navel to knees. Modesty of eyes is though the same.
Also men tend to fall into lust and get sexually aroused lot more easily than women and we do observe that in our daily lives.
And you didn't get my point: I did not say if it's okay or not for those behind the Imam..I said 'I' would not want me or my daughter to be in a situation where I have to do such bodily maneuvers standing in front of a multitude of strange men. And I think most muslim women feel the same way.

Other professions that is male dominated because of the nature of the audience. Women are not required to pray 5 times a day at the mosque but men are.. so therefore it’s not a job that women actively pursue. This would have been a slap on her face and that’s exactly what she needs!

I never said anything about man, man have to be responsible, just, and they also have burdens, also woman has their responsabilities. But remember that the punishment of Allah is the same for women and men in term of sins. Just a comment -- the Hui Muslim minority in China does have female imams, and has for centuries. They lead services in separate women's mosques. There are certain ceremonies they cannot preside over (weddings and funerals, I think, although I'm not an expert), but they're a very important part of the community.

This is so uncomfy to watch. As a Christian, I can only applaud my Muslim brothers and sisters for being so dedicated and consistent to their holy books teachings. In my particular Christian denomination, women do not lead groups of men either. I’ve personally never once been offended by this. I’m a very religious, opinionated woman. I don’t feel suppressed one bit. Women have a tremendous role in my faith, and we also guide and lead other women. I believe God didn’t call us to be the spiritual leaders because He knew our plates were already full with everything else our family and communities demand of us. This is where the men were called to lead, and I gladly appreciate them doing so. I’m sure Muslim women are incredible religious figures in their homes, and in other groups of women. Let's not appease what the sister did by virtue of being a sister. She failed to answer a question that is so incredibly straightforward to answer. If we are going to place sisters in such positions, let's at the very least be sincere enough to not simply be proud of the tokenism of it but be confident knowing that sister has the substance of being strong and proud to say exactly what Allah has ordained without feeling the need to cow down to please the non-muslim journalist. The journalist wasn't bullying her. Whether we like it or not, that's her job to push and prod for answers and the one being questioned must come prepared to answer with firm conviction and honesty.

The interviewer really doesn't understand the term of imam. Imam is a person who LEADING. Of course woman can be imam for other woman. But if men are there, we will lead the prayer. Same goes to a family. The man will lead his family because he hold many responsibilities to his family but that doesn't mean woman doesn't have right or turn down in Islam. Woman have same right with man but slightly in different terms. Prophet Muhammad was asked by his companion who he should pay his respect to. The prophet said 3 times for mother then after that the fourth time is the father. Anyone who disobey his mother will not be accept into the heaven. There are term " heaven is under the mother's feet". This is how high Islam put woman status in Islam.

If they are referring to the person who leads prayer we don't have that. We can't have a woman bend over in front of a bunch of guys. But if they're referring to the person who has knowledge a cleric yes we have hundreds of thousands and this role is so critical because the person who leads prayer that's all what he does. Al-imam Nawawe mentioned that a cleric has to be : a role model, Muslim, trustworthy, kept himself from what can cause immorality and nullifiers of decency, has knowledge, sane, sober, knows how to act and elicitate, vigilant, whether he was a free person or a servent, a woman , a blind or mute if he can write or his sign is understood.
There is NO clergy in Islam and the current set up of imam and sheikhs is due to our own inadequacies as Muslims.
The communal prayers in the masjid are an obligation on the men ONLY females are exempt from this by Allah SWT.
However, as per the current system of employed Imams, it’s a prerequisite that the imam leads the five compulsory prayers, as females are subject to the monthly cycle hence will not be able to perform the prayers.
Islam is the Deen ordained by Allah SWT and not subject to our wishes nor of the non Muslims.

From my understanding, men and women in Islam has different roles and responsibilities. For any jumaah prayers, it is obligated for men to lead the prayer. But female is not obligated to do so. However, in a room that only occupies woman and no men seen these women can lead prayers to each other. So this is beautiful in Islam. Women doesnt have to compete with men in all areas. We understand our each roles. And these differences does not mean men are superior than woman. In Islam the Quran says that men and women are equal in the eyes of God. So that means women in Islam still get the same reward as men eventhough our roles are different.
Who said anything about competing? The problem is most have an issue with female imams. I'm sure if one wants to lead a prayers for everyone. It's simply not allowed.

The Islamic community which has taken offence to this in the open letter isn't upset about the style of questing but more that the physical questions clearly highlight how Islam isn't a progressive religion. Islam is very clear about its views towards females in general when considering females in positions of religious power, which is why they simply won't have any females in those positions, this poor lady is well aware that she can't say that there isn't any nor will be any, because she probably values her role more than some throw away comments which will remove her from the same position. The trouble from this comes from the perceived ideal however that the west has things right in that sense, which is a completely double edged sword, the BBC currently is hell bent on attempting to bridge things like the female to male pay gap, gender equality and religious empathy. Whilst the world also wants to show that males and females are equal at everything, this isn't how Islam works. The paradox of asking a female representative of Islam about why there isn't any imams in the UK just about highlights how confused the BBC is currently. The BBC can't be progressive whilst at the same time highlighting how backwards Islam is in relation to how it views its female members. what is it attempting to achieve? Islam isn't a female empowering religion, fact, brining one on to then display that by asking her why Islam isn't progressive, just doesn't make sense. The backlash being faced clearly shows how upset it is by these very fair questions, you want real growth, answer the question. For those also about to attack on a perceived lack of knowledge of islam, for as long as you have a religion which functions on the concept them men can marry non Muslims (any religion) as long as they are of the book, whilst females Muslims have to stay within faith, for me shows where we are in life. Islam has a real problem with females being in control of anything, due to male corruption of the faith away from its true original format. Things like needing 3 male witnesses to rape, or one male, being equal to 3 female witness highlight how the religion is geared to provide males with true power.
The interviewer is entitled to ask the question as she comes from a position of relative ignorance and even though the question comes from a position of negative presumption. It would have been more appropriate and fairer to have asked "Does Islam permit/allow female imam's?" The straightforward answer to that would be ''Yes, naturally it does , why would it not?"
Their is nothing in the Qur'an that precludes that potential and much that promotes it.
4 witnesses are required to prove that a woman has committed adultery (NOT rape!!!) - the purpose being to limit the casualness of of making spurious accusations . Slander in general and unfounded allegations of sexual misconduct against (believing muslim) women are of the gravest of offenses in Islam. The Qur'an is by far the most assuredly dignity-protective, female-empowering religious text to be found out of all major faiths. (One reason why even a good many so-called muslim men try to distract from it!)
The recommendation of 2 women as witnesses as equivalent to a man in financial dealings serves to assist the security of the female/s and their testimony. It in the event that the woman may be more vulnerable/easily threatened/intimidated by a man/group to 'alter' their testimony- a 2nd female would then be an immediate backer AND also serve as a deterrent to a man/group thus inclined. Of course, this advice is not foolproof, but certainly practically useful from an era in which women and inherent rights were almost alienated from one another. Just to have survived the common practice of female infanticide in that era, would have been an achievement!!
That a muslim woman may not marry outside the faith is down to the the greater chance that the non-muslim husband is more likely to not consciously direct education of offspring towards Islam and may not be inclined to support it. A muslim husband however, has the foremost and ultimate responsibility in making a provision( including financial) for an islamic upbringing of children and hence the allowance of marriage with a female 'from the people of the Book' though even that is nonetheless dependent on her genuine support for a muslim upbringing of offspring. Even in the present day, it would be very difficult for a muslim woman to raise her children in an islamic home environment, without the support of a husband who shares in that inclination. The purpose would also be for men to learn to be prepared to assume such responsibility as a justification for having been given the 'extra degree of brawn' rather than 'sit back and be self-centered'.

I would agree that a Muslim person vs a non-Muslim person should indeed have more knowledge about the subject but to that end avoiding answering such questions doesn't educate the non-believer further, especially when we avoid the question because we don't like the answer. The interviewer (lady) asked "what is the picture for woman leading prayer in Britain". That's not a question we should be avoiding. Just be honest and say they do lead prayer but not if males are present. Why? Because men would point blank refuse to pray behind a woman (physically), because currently males within Islam will not accept a female leading them in prayer, the mechanics of that I won't go into but we at least need to all accept the answer. I will highlight further we don't even pray in the same room. If we do (within the same room) then we have a partition between us, so we can't even see each other (males and females). Also we need to look at the definition of Imam being a teacher vs that of someone leading prayer. Just be honest. Yes we may have female educators, and yes we may have females leading prayer over other females but a female will not lead prayer when a man is present. Even if it was 99 females and 1 guy. That one man could even be a teenager, he will still lead the prayer. Which is what the question was about. We also have a duty to teach others about the faith and questions should be answered, or, the answer should be given as I will read about it and attempt to find an answer for you. She replied "its not for me to go into my roles and responsibilities or for me to define spirituality. She wasn't being asked to define spirituality. As for my last point, that a female Muslim isn't and shouldn't be allowed to marry a male non Muslims because she can't enforce Islam in the house hold, this again exactly highlights where the mindset is, in relation to who holds power and also who is stronger, a man can apparently marry non Muslims because he can force his will onto a female, the opposite side of that coin according to you is a female can not. You can't get any clearly evidence of who one rule for one and another rule for another based on gender. @@playboyflameboy I think you misunderstand what I'm trying to convey somewhat. I don't back the idea that physical strength i.e man's, on its own, 'controls' what is wrong or right, but how the greater apportioning of it to men(on average) by Allah comes with a designated burden of economic responsibility under the purview of an Islamic God/Allah. That than creates a state of balance- of justice because otherwise that extra degree of brawn/ one degree higher of ability WOULD be an UNJUST, unwarranted provision- and Allah is very careful to point that out in the Qur'an.
A muslim husband could not 'force' Islam on his children -its just that he has a greater responsibility in ensuring the protection of its delivery(including financially) to his children. Islam is relatively child-friendly anyhow, because of its inherent rationality and logical prinicples. E.g, much easier, more reassuring concept to explain to a child about a singular all-encompassing God, rather than a 3-in-1 or multiple split-personalities or competing Gods.
A second women witness would likely serve as a deterrent against the potential of female witness abuse in contract arrangements and that would have applicability in today's world as well so I would see no harm in that option for women (at least) being retained.
The heavy wisdom in that recommendation from Allah is self-evident. If you look at the Harvey Weinstein case for example- or incredibly that of the US female gymnastic team(exceptionally talented and confident) and despite some of these actresses well-being connected scores! 'had to be abused' before a mass-effect managed to take the perpetrators down. Why did G.Paltrow continue to publicly schmooze with Weinstein some years after her abusive encounter? Yet, the testimony one abuse victim alone should have been more than enough in a so-called 'civilized' modern society.
I take your point that large-scale, male-oriented practice of Islam has developed which is of course common to any other of the major world religions. However, Islam is at least better protected because at least the original classical Arabic of its language has stayed inviolate, its grammar rules preserved. As both women and men become better educated in that knowledge and there certainly is that movement- there is the potential that there will be a shift , a reversion in practice to its Prophet-era standards. Because no muslim 'sect' irrespective of its loyalty to its peculiarities will ever DARE to tamper with that original Arabic form- not even the Ahmedis. Not the Shias or the Sufis. All they can do is be pushy with their particular set of hadiths.
Of course, the emergence of a female-dignifying Islam will be threatening to either a capitalist or rigidly communist economies because both systems seek to commodify them, rather than value them as soul-bearing autonomous entities.
Does she know that imams actually lead the community in every possible way, like the caliph is a supreme leader as well as the imam, they lead the prayer, they lead the war,they teach religion...a women from historical perspective cannot do all these roles at a time, if we expect them to fight wars as men then it's shameful on our manhood. Similarly a women cannot lead the prayer.
