Great vids, I enjoy purchasing budget & restoring where necessary - great joy. Collecting early Triang, kitbuilt brass & whitemetal (for a challenge!), some Hornby, Lima, Frateschi & some old-time USA steamers. Love the XO4 motors - always serviceable. This Airfix I also have, easy motor to work on, powerful runner & of the best tender-drives made. Also have the black version, nice detailing for its age & in operation if loco is well-lubricated you don'really notice the tender drive after it starts moving. Nice one.
@@ooheaven8491 careful with those thin plastic cab handle-bars, they break easily - you were actually lucky to get one with those complete! Here in Peru it is 20GBP plus about 15GBP postage - hence me slowing down - used to be 9GBP 3 years ago & Royal Mail has just increased prices for a happy 2022!

They are very nice engines. They can suffer from the traction tyres going hard as they get older.causing a lack of traction to pull more than a couple of coaches. You if you ever need them can get replacements from Peters Spares. Yes you did get a great bargain. Too many engines are ignored because they are not the latest and greatest. When they are really very good for the price. Be carefull though if you ever want to service this engine and take the tender body off. The back part of the tender body if memory serves me right is held in by the rear buffer beam. That needs to removed first. Also if you look for 00Bill's channel here on You Tube he has done a service on one of these Airfix Scots.
Cheers bud,, yeah I managed to take the tender apart and check the motor,, looks in good Nick still and the brushes were in really good order,,, I've heard of Pete's spares gona check his site out later.. Thanks for the advice bud appreciate it
They used to make some nice looking models, though not always the best runners plastic drive gears are prone to cracking, but someone was making replacements on a 3d printer.
I have an airfix 4f. Beautiful model but noisy as hell. I did clean it thoroughly and got it to quiet down a bit but she's a great runner. When I bought it off eBay it was listed as non runner. A wire was loose in the tender
Make sure you lubricate all gear surfaces - there is one set behind the others that is often missed - lubricating that should get rid of a lot of noise - they are more noisy than modern drives, but should sound smooth. Recommend Labelle ptfe white grease or 102 gear lube so the lubricant is not thrown off all over the place.
I got same loco, runs really well....well it did but needs traction tyres for tender now. A lot of older loco's you can find for £30- 45 typically. Affordable and some just need a bit of TLC to be as good as new. Ya ok they're chunkier with less detail and inferior mechanisms......but they're affordable!
@@ooheaven8491 Got an old Hornby tender drive red Duchess coming soon. Described as running but needs tweaking. Usually a motor strip sorts that. £34! That's post too. Even if it's a non runner I think it'd be worth that price. The £180-270 prices Hornby are asking for their new stuff can whistle.
@@ooheaven8491 Aye. Learning how to strip old motors n something I've only recently bothered learning. Gives more confidance buying nails n turning them into halberds. 😋
I bet the seller had two of these, one in mint condition (the one you received) and a non-runner, which you were supposed to receive but he sent you the wrong one hahaha :)
Super bargain just got one myself for a similar price. Runs really well. Good looking loco. Makes the hobby more affordable. Regards Paul.
Definitely mate,, we don't need to spend £200 on a loco,, much more value for money doing it this way
