@11TripleThreaT11 100 bucks?! I just broke my first mesh head on my roland set, a month ago, and i've had my kit for year now. But a new new mesh head for my set, did only cost 20 bucks!
I personally use "BeechCustom" snare. i think it fits to most music styles. and i like its tune too. Btw use equalizer for best tone. And when recording, record from module by using DIMM if you can.
I have this kit (DTXtreme III kit with the full DTX900M module). I bought the set blindly from Reverb, thinking the DTX900M would send audio out through the USB interface. Nope. MIDI only, no USB audio out. What the hell was Yamaha thinking, especially with nearly every guitar multi-effects boards having USB audio out for eons now? But to be fair, the DTX900M is a crappy module for metal drumming, as the preset sounds that come with the module are junk that nobody would record rock drumming with. The old Yamaha DTX 2.0 module was WAY better for two reasons: Better rock drumming prefab sounds and the DTX 2.0 module having 3 hi-hat positions - closed, partially open and full open. The new Yamaha gear only supports fully open and closed. So I'm doubling down on my "What the hell, Yamaha?". Just listen (carefully) to every tone this guy generates - it's pure crap for recording, which renders the DTX3/DTX900M module nothing more than a seriously overpriced MIDI controller.
Got these wen brand new back when .3600 with the roland pm n 2 satelite speakers .now hav ms50 dr as roland cone cracked .but dtx 3 i still luv .b 64 soon got 68 ludwigs n 78 octaplus
@junjun44 I have noticed the hi-hat has to be hit at the yamaha mark as well. My hi-hat keeps spinning on the post, so the yamaha mark moves and I lose sensitivity. Did you ever get yours working properly?
I had this kit.Pads hurt after five minutes of playing.The velocity curve is unnatural leading to machine gun,robotic fills.The sounds were ok.Ended up trading the electronic kit for a Yamaha Club Custom kit that sounds and plays great!! Also purchased Rolands TD 30K.The difference between the DTX Extreme III and the Roland TD30K is Extreme to say the least.Roland wins hands down!!!
You are comparing two kits that are almost 5 years appart. The TD30K is an awesome kit, no doubt about it, but the new top line Yamaha's are very good as well, and i am gonna be honnest here, their new silicone pads are the closest to the real thing you get today.

can anyone tell me what is the difference between these extreme/express/explorer kits and the DTX series (like the DTX900)? I noticed that the DTX900 has mesh heads, like the roland TD series but i can't tell how they fit into the line up of Yamahas as far as age or quality etc. Is it just an issue of availability depending on the country?
Are you using a double bass pedal in some of this because im not too sure :S and i was wondering is it possible to get double bass pedals for eletronic drum kits :D?

Sorry dude, but no. Yamaha destroys Roland by miles. Cheaper sets with real recorded sounds inboard, like a VST. Roland sounds are synthetized, and sound robotic. Only the TD30 is the exception, but go buy a kit that is more expense than a car. Yamaha = Good value to your money.
Mind you, Roland makes new sounds for each each kit they make but Yamaha still use sounds from a drum kit that was made in 2009 (this one). The DTX900, 700, 500, 402 , 400 all have sounds from the DTXtreme 3. And they make kits that are very similar to the previous ones (birch wood, spruce wood whatever they are) Then there's Alesis. They have big pads but they are low quality pads. But we both can agree that Roland and Yamaha need to work on pad sizes.
Have the kit. and playing it for 2 years :) ask me your questions if you like :)

@kkinerk true, depends on your mounting wear. i also have the cords tied to the stand tight to prevent movement. just experiment with it a bit.
