  • This vegan naan is very simple and easy to make. The inspiration was the naan from my favourite Indian restaurant in Vancouver from my pre-vegan days. It was puffy and soft, stretchy as you pulled it apart, with some charring on the outside so there were crispy bits as well. This naan is made to be the same.
    PRINTABLE RECIPE FOR EASY VEGAN NAAN: www.marystestkitchen.com/easy-...
    This naan recipe requires just 3 ingredients: flour, yeast and salt. Plus water, of course. Just mix the ingredients together, let the dough rise for 30 minutes, knead it a little and divide the dough up into servings. Shape the dough and then cook each piece on the stove directly on a non-stick pan. A couple minutes later, you'll have soft, puffy naan bread ready to eat! If you prefer, you can also make this recipe in the oven.
    Use this naan to scoop up curries like my cheater butter chicken (with no butter and no chicken), my vegan bean vindaloo, or use them as pizza bases, like with my homemade Stranger Wings pizza. What will you do with your homemade naan?

    I love the fact that you didn’t suggest falafels as an examples for the uses of naan. Many people/youtubers make the mistake of combining middle eastern dishes with indian dishes thinking “it’s all the same” but it really isn’t. Not that it would be wrong to use it for falafel but it’s nice to be mindful of other cultures. Thank you 😊

    I make Greek tofu cubes and make the most incredible vegan souvlaki sandwiches using Naan. Its pillowy fresh and I'm never going back to any other kind of bread for my souvlakis! I put in the works! Vegan tzatziki, lettuce, tomato, onion and two olives! I want to do mini naans and small slices of the tofu and vegetables so I can almost do a sort of assemble mini souvlakis plates....the way you get a taco assembling hot plate at a restaurant.

      cheezhead Z is RIGHT! Freeze them! I find for all kinds of homemade bread, its best to either eat the same day OR let them cool to room temperature, then freeze them. When you thaw them, they are much nicer tasting than if you just stored them in the fridge. I hope that helps and sorry for the very late reply.

    Hi Miss Mary, I love the simplicity of your Naan recipe, but I was wondering if we can use part or full of whole wheat flour instead of all-purpose white flour? I kinda think that maybe it might require a little more water or so, but I thought I'd ask before i ruin 4 cups of flour, haha. :) I dont have all purpose flour right now, only wheat, almond, coconut but if it's necessary, i'll go buy some for this recipe.

    • @marystestkitchen
      @marystestkitchen  2 роки тому +1

      sorry for the late reply. Yes you could use whole wheat but the texture will be much different. You're right it would need a little more water. Or you can just reduce the amount of flour and then add as required-- go by feel.

      Great question. Start with less whole wheat flour (about 20% less). You may need to add more after that but do that after you get the dough together and rested at least 15 for it to hydrate. Add more flour only if it's too sticky to knead and try to keep it in the soft side. Good luck!

    yeah, ive already tried this recipe twice with the 4 cups and 1 1/4 cups of water and the dough was way to dry. I used the food processor and kneading way and still had this issue. Is anyone else having this issue? From first impression i already though that 4 cups of flour already seemed too much for that little water

    • @marystestkitchen
      @marystestkitchen  3 роки тому +1

      The recipe is accurate based on my results as well as many commenters. But did you spoon the floor into your measuring cup without packing (proper flour measuring is super important) or weigh it out? If you're having trouble, you can always scale back on the amount of flour to 75% at first and add more as required.
      Also, flour variations can affect the volume that you require as well as humidity so this is a good practice to follow as you get to know bread recipes.
      Hope that helps. Good luck for next time!

    • @lisarobinson9621
      @lisarobinson9621 3 роки тому

      Christian, also keep in mind that flour can be dry or moist depending on the humidity in the environment that the flour is being prepared in. I have a recipe for a Lebanese bread I routinely made in Maryland for years; I moved to the southern tip of North Carolina (a very humid climate) and I all of a sudden needed less water OR more flour to get the dough texture right. So first, measure correctly as Mary suggested: Stir your flour, then spoon out the flour into your measuring cup, then take a butter knife and scrap the top to level it out. And, second, add your liquid slowly, and allow your flour to absorb the liquid. In the Mississippi Delta in July, your flour may only need 1 cup plus a tablespoon of water, but where you’re located, it may need a cup in a half of water. Do what the flour needs, as opposed to keeping strictly to the recipe. See video on this technique from King Arthur Flour, ua-cam.com/video/GUSovVHpqsU/v-deo.html. All the best🕊.

      You can input the ingredients into an online calculator to find out. We don't do that here.

    I thought naan didn't have yeast in?
    Anyway, I'm going to try this and add chia seed, garlic and cheese.

      Some have yeast, some use natural wild yeast, some are yeast-free :-) naan is just bread!
