We used to drive past Majuba mountain many times.. used to wander about the history and war site as well as O'Neill cottage. So Interesting! Thanks for the video. My great grandmother on maternal side was Irish.. born in Standerton. Thanks Al.
My grandfather and grandmother came in the 50's from Ireland to Cape Town to start a new life and without both their sacrifices I wouldn't be in this beautiful country today, my dream is to visit northeast county Cavan, Ireland where they came from and see where my heritage comes from. Im so proud to have both Celtic and Coloured genes 🇨🇮❤🇿🇦
Thanks for your account. Fantastic that your family story is so well preserved. I did visit Cavan many years ago. I vaguely recall an ancient churchyard where people used to leave pins on a certain gravestone to cure themselves of warts! (But my memory may be mixing it up with another place.)
@@JustOfftheHighway I'm fortunate to have a genealogy report of my family tree and a coat of arms, such an honour to see those who lived before me, thanks for amazing video brother 👍❤
I'm born and raised in Ireland and my father is from Cavan - and I'm marrying a woman from Cape Town this year haha The Irish/ south african connection is real 🤝
@@JustOfftheHighway Thanks Al, your channel is great also, I've been trying to find the Irish/ Sa connection for a while and love the history you have dug up.
Baie dankie, Stephan. Ek is nie Iers nie, maar hoe meer ek gelees het van die Ierse Brigade in die tweede oorlog, hoe meer stories het ek begin ontdek.
Once again an awesome story. Those battlefields can be emotional visits. I thought that I had been to most sites, but this is one that I will have to add to a road trip. As always, thanks for an informative and entertaining episode.
Thanks David! When I walked on the ground that had to be crossed under fire, the history really came alive. I highly recommend a visit. And, of course, a hat tip and a glass of something Irish to mark St. Patrick's day too. 😉
I have Irish blood, plus had the Irish red hair but with green eyes. My paternal grandmother had titian red hair and green eyes her paternal grandmother was a Mac Cauley. Also have Scottish heritage as well, Montgomery I really enjoy your videos, though I have not seen a video for quite a while, until today. Also looking forward to your next video. 😊
Seems like resources are scarce at some of the sites that are on private property, but I think there should be assistance from the state to maintain cultural treasures.
Yo! Al Prodges! I haven't seen you in the comedy circles in a while. It's good to see you up & about doing what you enjoy doing. Very interesting topics in your channel. Love the content & the history lessons that come with. Keep climbing high sir. Much love!👊🏾😉
Hi and Thanks! I still love doing comedy when I get the opportunity. This is a passion project to rediscover some offbeat people and stories. Thanks for your kind words and wishes. All the best to you too.
I have Irish ancestry on both maternal lines of my parents eventhough I speak Afrikaans as my father's mother did. My great grandmother on my mother's side spoke English though because her parents came directly from Ireland.
Hi Al. I’ve passed this on to my friend Seamus McGuigan. I suspect that it might resonate with him. BTW. I once saw you on stage at the Baxter theatre a long time ago.

Thanks for your comment. So glad I could fill in a gap in the story for you. That's exactly what Just Off the Highway is meant to do.
Fascinating history for those of us who were born in SA. Thanks Al. 👏
Thanks! I'm very glad you enjoyed it.
Mr. Prodgers! Well done. I cannot wait for the next installment
Thanks, Leon! Getting busy making it...
Thanks Al for the lovely dive into our history and wow what lovely scenery... such good feels, keep 'em coming!!
Thanks Theunis! So glad you enjoyed it. This one went a bit further off the highway than I had planned.

So heartbreaking that such important places are so neglected.

My family came to south Africa from Wicklow in the 1850s to mine diamonds.

Louis Botha's wife Annie was related to the young famous Irish patriot Robert Emmet.
I didn't know that. Thanks for adding this information.

Hi Salaam, yes I think someone named Seamus might have a personal connection. You're right, the Baxter was ages ago.
Us boere thought that the British were the enemy...how wrong we were....
We all have to re-evaluate our old thought patterns.
Ek het sopas Donkerland gelees. So, die video verskaf visuele konteks. Dankie
Dis 'n plesier. Ek het al gehoor van die boek, maar nog nie gelees nie.
