- For hundreds of years, Irish convicts, the Irish Brigade of outlaws, bank robbers and even secret political dealings on the Johannesburg gold fields might all have shaped the history of South Africa and Ireland, leading to consequences that are still felt today. Al Prodgers pulls at threads and discovers intertwining stories.

My great grandad George Young jumped shipped in the 1800's in Grahamstown from a boat from Scotland (he was a convict headed for banishment to Australia). He ended up in Theunissen in the OFS).
Wow! What an exciting family history. Thanks.
Thank you so much for the information you bring to us it's appreciate.
Thank you very much for watching and for your kind comments.
This is beautiful. Keep them coming, Al!
Thanks so much!
SOUTH AFRICA IS A BEAUTIFUL COUNTRY. WE LOVE YOU IRISH PEOPLE. Thank you
This is a great episode! Wow and the mining district looks great!! Thanks Al, thoroughly enjoyed.
Thank you! Yes, some very interesting, authentic bits and pieces to see there.
Interesting piece of history 🎉
Thank you.
Another awesome episode. These should be used in schools to teach our history. Thanks once again Al.
Thanks for that high praise. Perhaps we should encourage kids to embrace their curiosity. I know very little. I just like discovering stuff.
Will never happen. Wrong history
Really enjoyed this, looking forward to more
Thank you. Please feel free to browse the other episodes.
good one, Al, so many fascinating twists and turns - just imagine, without the Foster Gang we wouldn’t have had Bok van Blerk’s hit De La Rey . . . 🤭😉
I was thinking about that song. The Irish also write popular music about history and folk heroes.
The song of de la Rey has noting to do with the Foster gang
Love some of your commentary,,,hilarious 🤣 😆 😂
Thanks! Glad you enjoyed it.
Thanks!
Thanks very much for your generous support!
My goodness, interesting facts I never knew.
Thanks for your comment. Glad you found the episode interesting.
History that I don't know about but very interesting, and by the way love you old Toyota,it looks pristine 👌
Thank you. Glad you enjoyed it. And thanks for your kind comment about the Corona. She's got plenty of km on the clock and a lovely patina. I do wish I could restore her completely.
Please do an account of the Irish volunteers in the Boer war. At school we were taught about plucky boers fighting the mighty British empire but volunteers came from around the world. There was a monument in brixton now relocated...
Hi, yes, that's a fine story. The monument is now in Orania (I believe. Not 100% certain.) So that's a long way for me, but I hope to feature it one day soon.
The cleanest part of South Africa. I'm impressed with the maintenance. 🇿🇦
Lots of high powered offices and private security.
Amazing story.
Thank you!
Thank you for the interesting video. Please make a video on the Jeppe area. I often have to drive through this historic dilapidated area with the little houses or what is left of them that sits on the streets. I often wonder what is the history of the area. There is some really old buildings.
Thanks. That's a really interesting idea. It's a part of town I know very little about.
My Dad owned the old mine managers house on the corner of main rd, Jeppedtown, was built in 1895.... We lived here for 40 years.
@@richardwebb9532 Different building standards in those days.
@@JustOfftheHighway Monkey bar and Siesta boarding house, drop past and have a beer sometime 🍻👍
@@richardwebb9532 Thanks for the invitation. I'll be in touch.
2:58 My father's side came from Ireland to work the gold fields of the ZAR & make a life for themself far from the British jackboot having survived An Gorta Mór, Trevelyan's genocide of the Irish people.
Thanks for adding that detail and sharing insight into family history.
WOW, great video. Thank you very much for all your postings. Yea, one can't change history. Although our poletitions wanted to... Keep up the good work and keep the camera rolling.... God bless you..........
Thank you for your kind comment. A tonic for the spirit.
Great narration.
Thanks very much!
Thanks for another enlightening video Al. An Irish passport is worth more than gold nowadays. My great grandmother was from County Cork, my great grandfather was a German/Jew, so he changed his name from Aschman to Ashman, due to the stigma, before emigrating to SA. Due to the name change after years of attemting every avenue possible, we were unable to aquire the golden ticket. However, as soon as you think you got a grasp on things, Mr Prodgers arrives and makes you feel silly for not knowing your heritage and history. As always, thank you and stay safe.
Glad you liked it, Malcolm. You're lucky to know so much about your ancestors. I'm constantly just jaw-drop amazed by the intertwined stories that make up SA people. Thanks!
For a lot more interesting stuff about our history look for Rod Kruger.
His knowledge is very valuable
If they had allowed the convicts to land like in Australia the aborigines of South Africa would have been ethnically cleansed like they did in Australia.
Your forefathers, like Jan van Riebeeck who was a convict did kill and raped our forefathers. There's no need to make a joke about this.
Go to Parkhurst in JHB all the street names are Irish place names
Yes, if I remember correctly, there's a connection between the street names and someone (name escapes me now) who was one of the founders of Wits University.
That's why I've always had a thing for SA Irish men. Any single ones hit me up.
My Irish grandfather came to SA early 1900 he got married to a SA woman 1913. I would like to find out more about his background etc but it is very difficult.
Yes, genealogical research can be complicated and expensive.I believe there are societies that are willing to guide you to do your own research.
Hi Michael, how old are you ? You don't have a brother Chris, who passed away recently ?
@@markriordan9010 Hi Mark I was born 1958. No I don't have any brothers.
@@nedor64 Thanks, I was also born in '58, had a half-brother named Michael Riordan, I'm also keen to trace our roots to the time when we came over here. Good luck with your search. Proud to be Irish origin, but this is a magnificent country, spoiled by the Government at the moment, but we live in hope.
Very informative I drive by that intersection at least once or twice a month. It's funny I never heard of the Irish influences in SA before in school . I 🤔 why ?
Thanks. I'm also amazed that I continually discover stories that I believe should be more widely known. I guess various authorities have always wanted to emphasise certain stories and ignore others.
@@JustOfftheHighway well I can't argue there .
One cant believe one word anymore.😢
Hi Cecily, I hope you don't mean that you can't believe one word of my stories. I assure you I've backed them up with more than one source. If you mean that powerful parties constantly try to edit history in their favour, then I agree with you.
Please do some stories of Melville😊😊
Good idea. Thanks. It's an area with a rich history.
The roads were obviously better in Del a Ray's time where he could speed😂
😆
No matter how bad the Irish gangs were they will never surpass the evil that the ANC has done to us.
How about the place in Natal called 'Home Rule'. that's pretty Irish.
Hi Greg, I had never heard of it, so I did some research, with zero results. If there is such a place, it certainly has a fascinating name and I'd love to hear more. Please let us know.
S.A has it's problems just like any other country in the world but if you read some of the comments below you'd think this was Syria or Ukraine
Yes, I also lose perspective sometimes.
"Johannesburg, a city fathered by gold, mothered by money, then commandeered by white men with cruelty and greed".Egoli, the city of Gold. Proudly South African🇿🇦🇿🇦
Now commandeered by black people with cruelty, violence and greed! Viva, ANC!
@@kelrogers8480 you can say that again. Things have turned out badly, to say Joburg is now more than dangerous is an understatement. It's scary!
Lol
Give write up on eskom
Surely you must have gotten robbed in South Africa,
I am South African. I live here. And the answer is "No".
Your answer should be "not yet"......stay safe.
