- Nickel Plate Road Berkshire No. 759 came out of retirement in 1968 to handle excursions for Ross Rowland's High Iron Company, a job it did superbly until its second retirement in 1971.
I was just a kid with an Instamatic Super-8 movie camera, a tripod and a cassette tape recorder when I captured these images and sounds of 759 on some of its New York-New Jersey-area excursions. They've waited 45 years for me to digitize them and put audio and picture together for the first time. Enjoy.
She may not have had a long excursion career, but her successful restoration and trips proved it was possible for steam locomotives to be restored to operating service with the right amount of dedication.
I'm stunned there's finally actual sound of 759 on UA-cam! Nice to hear another Nathan 6 chime to compare to 765.
I can see about 26 wearing it since we once and awhile get the chance to run odd whistles and horns on steamtown engines.
She was the steam engine that pulled the very last Pocahontas into Norfolk, VA from Roanoke and back with Norfolk & Western on both sides of her tender and sported a Class J whistle on May 1 1971 the day before Amtrak took over all of America's passenger train service. It sure would be nice to see her back running on the high Iron once again. She's my favorite Berk along with C&O 2716.
I was there when she stopped in Peru, IN for coal, water, and crew change. I remember it like it was yesterday. I was just 15 months old. 😎
I was fortunate to ride 2 of these #759 NorthEast Excursions! Thanks for sharing!
Just a tad higher pitched and a more mellow-sound than 765's whistle. I like it!
This is so awesome, especially with sound!!
absolutely awesome! It would be great to see 759 under steam again!and double headed with765!
759 was the very first steam locomotive I ever took pictures of.During here layover in Dover in Dover nj. I had a Kodak 127 black&white film camera! I was in my early teens! And saw her in Renville nj in1973!flying through there at track speed!I still have the photos of that beautiful Berk!
I'm just amazed how you sincronised the audio recording with the super 8video!Thank you for bringing back some fond memories!!
Thank you for posting this! It's great to hear another NKP berk!
I was in the cab at Lebanon NJ, with my Uncle and CNJ engineer Charlie Strunk. I will never forget it. I agree with Engineer 5344
0:41 Awesome whistle and bell
So my video got blocked because I used Mason Williams's CLASSICAL GAS in part of the soundtrack. It's been removed, so some of the shots are just silent now.
Nice work. Thank you for posting.
Her excursion career was short but this proved that Steam still has a presence and can return to operation
I feel like it’s Possible for 759 to be restored although at the same time I think that restoring her would be a bit complicated due to her damaged flues, plus there’s the fact that it would be massively expensive to do
I can see Boston and Maine 3713 make a return, 759 is kinda 50/50 where she could return to operation or just be given a cosmetic restoration
But only time will tell
It's a shame 759 might never run again but at least she got to live a great short excursion life
Well, she could. She's actually in great condition, but Steamtown decided to restore Boston and Maine 3713 over her. These are the ways 759 could be restored:
1. Steamtown decides to fully restore her back to operation (maybe the least likely)
2. A new non-profit organization buys 759 from Steamtown and restores her on a tourist line.
3. An already established organization buys 759 and operates her on a line that they already run on
And just because 765 is in operation doesn't mean 759 shouldn't. If the Reading T1s can operate at the same time, why can't 2 Nickle Plate Berkshires do the same?
With enough petitioning and/or dedication, anything is possible. I actually could see this being next in line after 3713, just it might be a long while until then
Thank you
I am so in love with that engine!!!!!!!!😍
i love NKP 759 and 765 759 is in Twilight of steam.
my all time favorite berk, more so than 765
Love nkp 759
Same!
Hey man they're basically the same engine just different numbers
Love 759
thanks
Nickel Plate Road 759’s second excursion career.
Thanks
Awesome! Dont know why but I've always loved 759 and somehow dont like her sister 765 all that much and they're virtually the same locomotive. Maybe its because I grew up with 759 and 765 didn't come till years later IDK.
759's second career.
Neat not much footage of the 759 is out there
+Dave Annett True, there isn't. I put together playlist of some of the better ones: ua-cam.com/play/PLqKGkdgzE1ePb_JWdYOceN_aEuIfXnAMx.html

That sounds incredibly similar to 765’s whistle
The NKP berks all carried the same whistle; a Nathan 6 step chime. 765 has the same brass whistle from the very first Nickel Plate Berkshire-type locomotive, no. 700. Like with any instrument, weathering, machine work, positioning, placement, time, and wear will impact how a whistle sounds, as these factors all influence how steam passes into the six chimes.
@5:53 Some of the music is still there
Yeah the copyright
What railroad is she on in the first scene?
PC, ex-NYC, Hudson Division main line.
lol it went on the cnj main
