When this came out, I was a 17 year-old student at the London College of Furniture in east London. I was absolutely enthralled by this single. I used to lust after the keyboard player. Her ‘bob’ hairstyle was so distinctive.
This was it. This was one of their first performances of Echo Beach live soon after it was released in the record stores. You are witnessing history that still resonates today, This song was kickass to say the least and it deserves its kudos!
@@SC-jh9qp That's not RSG {Ready Steady Go} which had probably wound up long ago... That 'live recording was in Germany I think. Thank's so much for taking the time to post the link. Greatly aprecciated... PS. I'd only watched that, last night ! LOL "Great Mind's" & all that...
The best from Canada since Neil Young. This song reminds me when I was 16. A good beginning of the 80's. It was covered by a female pop band from Madrid, Spain (my country) called Las Chinas.
I know it's out of fashion and a trifle uncool but this band has always made me tingle - Mark's guitar and Martha's voice just take you away ... to echo beach :) ... Swimming is another fantastic song by Martha "and her muffins" or anything by the same peeps M+M (they have lots of great songs to be re-explored)
There were actually two Marthas, both sang and played keyboards. Martha Ladly is the blonde one on keyboards and Martha Johnson is the lead singer on this. Apologies to international audiences for the interference of the DJ, Steve Wright - he is a renowned prat.
Brilliant comment re. Steve Wright; I thought I was the only one who think him a first-class moron with no talent. Unlike the musicians he make fatuous comments about !
Great Tune xx 198O. A new decade and some great new sounds. This is brilliant. Still a beautiful song. They cut off the end, that's my fave part! What the hell Kick ass track Kick ass track
Welllll! I listened to him in the eighties. Once I'd recovered the will to live, I intellectually came to the above opinion. Thank you for your concern.
far away in time indeed... listening to this stuff turns me into a sentimental sot (or makes me want to dance). It's a bittersweet pain. Damn the persistence and linearity of time.
I love old music because it's what I was listening to when I was growing up but you can't just say everything that comes out now is terrible. I'll be the first to admit that chart music is terrible at the moment but if you were to look around and listen to music that doesn't get that much exposure you'd realise that there's a lot of good stuff out there :)
this is an old fave - I grew up thinking is was just for me because my name is Echo and my Dad grew up around the real Echo Beach. It's in the Qu'Appelle Valley Provincial Park in Saskatchewan (Echo Valley). There is "Echo" everything there - even Echo Radio Shack! You can find Echo Beach, Lake and Retirement Home. too funny!
Also, it's really not that much of a beach - small and frequently closed due to pollution - it used to be part of a big park but the park was destroyed to make way for a highway. I used to think the song was about Wasaga Beach, on Georgian Bay, a two hour drive north of Toronto - it's the world's longest freshwater beach and lots of kids would drive there on the weekend from Toronto.
That's the second time this week I've seen a left handed guitarist playing the strings with high E at top and low E at bottom. Like just flipping over a right handed guitar without rearranging the strings. Dick Dale played that way too.
I've loved this song since it came out. Always reminds me of "up north." I'm surprised to find out the beach that inspired the song. is in Toronto--I thought it was about cottage country! Thanks for the post, & thank you M+M
@natdc794 Actually that is Martha Ladly on keyboards, with Martha Johnson doing the lead vocal. For me the group's best album is their 3rd, "This is the Ice Age". Ladly is now Associate Professor of interaction design, at the Ontario College of Art and Design, while the group (now just Johnson and guitarist Mark Gane) put out a new (and very good) album in 2010 called "Delicate". Met this video's line-up at Sheffield Poly in 1980. Lovely people.

I very much doubt "IT WAS LIVE". Not on top of the pop's..... RSG yes.
@@HTJB60 I agree, only a handful of acts were allowed to play live back then and only if they were very bolshy about it.
@@SC-jh9qp YEAH, Look carefully & the guitar's have no lead's plugged in.
@@HTJB60 Is this the RSG performance you alluded to? This is definitely live :ua-cam.com/video/TRS4NKjUdhI/v-deo.html

I have always had a soft spot for this excellent song ;I like the chorus/flange effect on the guitar .
The best from Canada since Neil Young. This song reminds me when I was 16. A good beginning of the 80's. It was covered by a female pop band from Madrid, Spain (my country) called Las Chinas.

Over 31 years old - and still annihilates any of the dross in the charts in 2011.
my fave song of all time
One of all time favorites. A joy to play along to on guitar. Think they were from Canada, I seem to remember.Echo beach is there too.

198O. A new decade and some great new sounds. This is brilliant.

charlie drake He's always been a prat, always will be. I am amazed he has a show on Radio 2 doing the same tedious self-important crap as always.
charlie drake ditto...KillerBI8 put it fantastically well.

18 Dec: Martha Wright's birthday! Which is how I came to be here.

Hugely underrated band, this song is pure class and from the best decade in music in my opinion.
Best decade for popular music was the 1970s.
The song of the 1980's.
UNCOOL? Liking this! Yo the man...LOL. This is brilliant stuff
@ThePipettesFans yes of course that's who it is.
Holy. I had no idea that this song was from a Canadian band! :D
Martha how HOT 🥰
Wow. I thought they were only big in Canada and a fewer U.S. border States.
This song sits well in the 2-tone era. Very similar

The intro of the song sounds like The Cure. nice..
maybe the new music will sound better when it gets better? but yeah i agree, the songs do souond better now, than they did at the time
