    Solid work!! Crazy how stuff is almost made to fit other stuff. If you ever have a plastic gas can and lose the cap to the end of the plastic tube a 3/4" PVC cap fits perfect. I've been using one for 10 years and haven't lost it yet.

    I am getting into kayak fishing. I have two Lightning Strikes ordered. My wife wouldn’t go for me getting one unless I got a extra one for my Son or someone else. My Late Fathers best friend died while fishing by hisself and he didn’t go for fishing alone. This is a great idea and I am subscribed to your videos. I am just blown away by how many people share ideas. I think this is why I am drawn to this sport. Thank you for your great ideas. Learning a lot and boats hasn’t come in yet. Hope I got a good one!

      That's awesome man , I go by myself on a kayak sometimes . But I've never been at night by myself . I've also never flip mine but almost did once . Always go with someone at least till you get comfortable any type boating can be dangerous

    Dude, you are the man. Another great idea and build that outperforms anything that you could buy. I am in the middle of making mine. I went with a 1" PVC pipe for the LED strip light to wrap around. I also used a 4 way 1/2" T, and added two switches, one for the strip lights and one for the Nav light. I don't have a 12V battery yet, tried my house alarm's 12V battery, but it is so old that it is only kickin' out 7.56V! So I wired my lighting up to the alarm system where the 12V battery would otherwise be connected to. I did this to ensure that all my wire to wire and wire to switch connections were solid before gluing everything together. I bought LED strip lights that had a plug style connection, so I just grabbed an old charger of some sort that fit the LED, and it works great.

    Soldering is never overkill,it’s piece of mind. Especially when dealing with DC voltage and moisture. On a side note.. when I solder I connect the wire horizontally, twist together,solder then shrink tube. Takes up less room.

    I built this, and it works extremely well. I fish in saltwater, and found that the led strip is not as waterproof as the manufacturer would have us believe. I had to re-solder an led connection that corroded under the clear material covering the strip, and resulted in half the strip going out. My solution was to order a marine grade clear shrink tube from Amazon. The shrink tube has a clear heat activated glue lining the inside that seals everything off from the elements, it's also pretty thick, so it protects the led's from bumps in the night. I've had it working now for about a year with no problems.

    Over here in Australia we have to have the white nav light as you call it, here it's an anchor light & the nav lights are the red green port starboard lights. So if you can find a neat way to make those DIY then great, all powered boats by law need the red green nav lights that are greater than 54 lumens so that they can be seen for 2 miles. I'm making a 10 foot longtail catamaran that also has hydro foils with a 13 HP motor which should reach about 40mph while it's off the water.

    • @FishinNStuff
      @FishinNStuff  5 років тому

      That' sounds like an awesome boat , over here in America or laws are the same as yours for power boats , but on kayaks they don't want you running green and red because boats can mistake you for another boat , and you don't have the speed to move out of the way . Is better they think your a anchored boat because a basically that's what you are moving 2 or 3 mph lol the brake light used on this Nav light is well beyond 50 lumens if I had to guess I would say closer to 250 lumens. But im sure you could make Nav lights for a boat using the same principle id you wanted . I appreciate you commenting buddy . I like learning too

  • @timparker7195
    @timparker7195 5 років тому +4

    Thanks for the great idea. I made one change. For fitting the led brake light, I used a heat gun to soften the 1/2 in. PVC pipe, the simply pushed the base of the light into the PVC and held it there until cooled and pipe once again hard. I'm sure I'm not the first. I actually prefer the single brake light vs. the strip light. My strip light became so hot after 20 minutes that the 3/4" pipe soften and bent. I was testing the battery. I'm sure it will work if I o ly use it a few minutes for video.

    ARGH! I loved this idea and watched this video more times than I can count because I wanted to make one for myself. I purchased the exact same LED Light strip and PVC, Brake light, Marine Wire, everything just as the video says. I cut the 18 inch piece of 3/4 in Schedule 40 to start wrapping the light strip just as our guy did in the video, nice and tight, one butted right up next to the other, used Super glue every 3 inches just like he says. Only to find out that you get to the end of your 18 inch piece of tubing and you still have 2 feet of LED lighting on the roll. 18 inches wasn't long enough. Once I realized that I would need a longer piece I started to unwrap the LED strip that I had already wrapped around it and the super glue every 3 inches but the self adhesive backing seemed to hold so well that it peeled the back of the LED strip right off damaging it beyond repair. I can re start the project by purchasing another light strip along with some more Schedule 40 PVC but just be aware, anyone that plans on trying to follow our guys directions to the letter. Instead of cutting the piece to wrap the lights around to 18 inches, use a longer piece. Wrap the lights around, and once you get that done go back and cut your PVC after wards. That's the only way that I can see to avoid what happened to me happening to you. Great Idea but if your gonna try this yourself, don't cut your piece before wrapping your lights. If I knew how long it would need to be I would list it here but I haven't retried it yet. Good luck

    Really loved this one I just ordered my materials and I will post back with a picture of it if I can figure how to do it. I’m making slightly different I will have 2 bulbs in addition to the strip leds. They will be switchable and I will also mount them in sockets for a easier way to replace or update the bulbs in future. I will be using #16 silicone insulated wire for the project and I will be adding a fuse to the power lead. The 1157 bulbs I found on Amazon are 2000 lumens so I’ll have enough light I may add a dimmer to it if I can find one that I can fit it. I will also see if I can make it strobe for better visibility. On the little lakes I go to I’m not worried about being hit as they don’t allow gas motors. But I do fish on some rivers and bays that have every boat you can think of and a lot of drunk drivers.

    • @FishinNStuff

    I needed to replace the Nav light on my Pontoon boat, I decided I didn't like it on the Bimini frame. So I ordered up an LED replacement that said it was BRIGHT. Oh it surely is! Best part is it is bright enough to use for a general light for fishin. Even with my old eyes, I can find stuff in my Tackle boxes. LED's are the bomb for fishin.

  • @WesLovelace

    I like the videos and I appreciate them greatly.
    I have a Hobie pro angler 12 and have been thinking about making a crate for the rear. But I also think about more rod holders, nav light, stabilizing bouys and other things to make fishing easier.... standing up on my kayak makes catching fish easier.
    So I been thinking.
    You know the rod holders on the pa12 are basically behind my elbows when seated in the boat. I'm thinking if I could put pvc pipe in those holders and put two 90 deg elbows (away from the hull on each side) out to the bouys (stabilizers) then 90deg back into the boat... framework, if you will, around the crate. Within the frame of the pvc, make two rod holders on each side of the boat and they could be designed out further from the side of the boat so you don't have to turn around so far to change rods when fishing. Since the crate becomes so top heavy with the rod holders (with the rods in them), this may be an improvement to the crate. The crate can then be attached to the stabilizer/ rod rack frame.
    I could probably integrate the nav light into the pvc frame.
    I hope this makes sense, cause I'd love to hear your thoughts.
    Thanks again for all the cool videos.

    Only one issue, and to be honest, it's not a huge one, but is is non the less.
    By the time I add in a Lithium Ion Battery and a charger, I am in for at least $70...Plus my time and effort. Not a big savings. But if I already had a battery for my kayak for some reason, it would be a super easy decision. Keep up the amazing work!!!

      @@FishinNStuff Also a question....Would it be beneficial to have two lights on switches? One flashing and one always on. If so, could the flasher be red and on white.
      So at the top, I put an additional "T" Putting the white light out the top, then make an elbow upward off of that T. (Towards the back of the boat.) Or even go straight out. Put the red flasher on that rearward elbow. (Red strictly being for others to see you better.)
      Would that even be legal?
      BTW, I didn't tell you thank you for taking the time to reply the first time.

    • @paulhandwork
      @paulhandwork 3 роки тому

      Never mind the red flasher. I found the rules and it isn't advised.
      From the Coast Guard rules FAQ:
      www.navcen.uscg.gov/?pageName=navRulesFAQ#0.3_14
      14. Can I use decorative lights, strobes, or other high intensity or specialty lights to be more visible at night?
      Standard lights are displayed aboard all vessels to help others to identify them and to better understand their maneuvering characteristics or possibly distress. The use of any lights, other than the lights prescribed by the Rules or its Annexes, is discouraged because the use of decorative lights, strobes, or other high intensity or specialty lighting could:
      confuse, rather than make you more visible;
      obfuscate a vessel's navigation lights, its characteristics, or cease to provide crucial direction and aspect information to other vessels;
      likely hinder a proper lookout and operators visibility (see Rule 20(b));
      be mistaken for other lights used as aids to navigation, by law enforcement or public safety vessels (i.e. flashing blue, red, yellow lights).
      For example, if while operating my vessel I see a red light on my starboard side I know I am the give-way vessel (Rule 16, 17).
      Should a mariner opt to use additional lighting, we suggest you look at this lighting from afar to ascertain whether it would violate Rule 20; and, we exhort you to adjust or refrain from using such lighting, if that is the case.

      Note, although Rule 37 of the Inland Rules allows the use of a high intensity white light flashing at regular intervals from 50 to 70 times per minute to signal in distress and requires assistance, such and similar lights are prohibited in the International Rules (Rule 36), and, shall be avoided because their use could interfere with the lookout and being seen by others.

    • @FishinNStuff
      @FishinNStuff  3 роки тому +1

      @@paulhandwork each state is different ontheir rules , our state says your light must be visible from 2 nautical miles . They really don't want you to use a green and red light because people can confuse you for a boat . Basically a white light is used while on anchor and a kayak speed is slow so its Basically on anchor

Old eyes sucks at night 😂. Anyway I’m going to make one of these for my kayak during the cold snap this year. It can be seen and I can do stuff if I need light. I would recommend that you switch the hot wire. If you have a short down stream from the switch breaking the hot wire will prevent the battery from discharging and also prevent the short from burning something up. Functionally it does the same thing it's just safer. It would be cool to use a 1/2" four-way or two "T's" so you could switch both lights
