My husband just bought one of these for me, and I'm rather new at this... I'm not the best... It came with a wick. Will that work to keep it watered? I just put it in my son's room, with the least amount of sun light, sitting on some rocks in a cover pot, with some water in the bottom of the pot, and the wick strings in the water. Is that how that works?
I wish you could see me trying to place my new plant as you were talking. I moved it away from the window to a book shelf - “ but they don’t like too little of light”- moved to to second shelf next too window -“watch out for heating cooling vents” - moves to night stand “and fan” I’ll just sweat at night. 😂😂
Harli G they really are. But I’m so glad I saw your video because I was doing the whole walking by and oh look she is being all dramatic. I guess I will water you now. lol. Hence drama queen. ☺️
Thanks for the helpful video. I bought my fittonia for it’s cuteness and then read up on care afterwards. Then had an “oh crap” moment because I thought I had just doomed this thing to a slow death. Happy to say she is thriving and has even bloomed indoors.
This gave me the confidence I needed in having my new little red fittonia, it's so beautiful. I dont know why I seem to fall head over heels for "finicky" plants but here we go!
I have been gifted all my plants, and these have been way cool plants. Pothos, monsters, dracaena, ginny peperomia, snake plants, spider plants, wondering jews, really cool, forgiving plants. Over water, under water, light tolerant to MY locations. Kind of easy. Felt real good about keeping them alive, and decided to finally spend the money, to get some plants that I picked out. Went for my birthday, spent $200 on plants I thought looked cool, brought them home, started to do some research on them, and every plant person is like, "a list of plants I hate, I kill, are difficult" my ENTIRE haul, every single one of them! 😳😬 Now I'm super scared I'm going to kill all of them.😒 My husband actually saw a pink nerve plant at a grocery store he had to do some work on, and brought it home for me, and I was thinking low light, moist soil, at least I'll keep this one alive! 1 out of the 7 others I got, and now I'm seeing people struggle with this one too! 😣 🤞 I do well. I got beautiful Calatheas and Alocasias though, hopefully I'll have them for awhile.
@@mentosmuncher2995 I'm actually kind of surprised, I've definitely been learning. My Alocasia dropped every single leaf after about a month month and a half, and one of my Calatheas was struggling pretty bad, so I cut both back to the stumps and left them in good light, outside in Georgia humid summers, and both have bounced back and grew more leaves. I currently have everything out on my front and back porch, and it's all doing really well. I have about another month or so before they'll need to start thinking about coming in at night, so we shall see how the winter goes, but so far I have done decent. I've gotten a lot of growth. I can't complain. I have noticed that when I had my calathea in less sun it wasn't really doing well, when I put it in basically full sun it grew, but I got a crispy leaf, so I moved it to more good medium light, and it's doing well. My Alocasia is in full sun. It has been pretty wet and humid all summer.
Now I realize why my Fittonia is so leggy! I have been keeping it on a bookshelf on the far wall of a south-facing window and had been wondering why it was getting so tall and sparse. I couldn't find any tips or info on it until your video. THANK YOU!
I'm currently getting to know my fittonia and what it likes. I'm glad you said about the fainting and reviving using up energy (and being bad for the plant), I hadn't realised that and was planning on just watering it whenever it drooped!
it has been more than a month and i can say that my fittonias are doing really well. I have yet to see them faint. They're indoors and water them about every 3 days when the pot is light and I look at the soil to figure out if they're thirsty. :)
I have a fittonia and it’s one of my favorites and most thriving houseplants. I do the same watering technique by bottom watering. I keep mine in a cachepot with water at the bottom and the nursery pot has a cotton wick attached to the bottom and it wicks up the water whenever it’s thirsty. Soon as the water at the bottom is empty then I wait a couple of days before I fill it up again. It’s been very happy in my room that gets more gentle and filtered eastern light.
I had my first fittonia for about a year, and then it just didn't want to live any more. I was so sad. I bought a new one recently. Let's hope this one wants to stick around a little longer. 🤞 New subbie, here. I've watched so many of your videos, and it just made sense to subscribe. I REALLY enjoy your videos 😊
Most of my Fittonia had died due to me underwatering and then as soon as I watered it more, all of these little new Fittonias came out of no where!🤗 So now she is doing great!
My ruby fittonia came with a water wick installed and I have to say it works amazingly. I’ve never had an issue with the plant being over or under watered
I keep mine in a terrarium. Super happy, leave it and forget it kind of relationship we have. It's working out so far protecting it from drafts and dry air.
@@hay12347 my plant was small enough to drop in the pot with the plant...more like a cloche set up than a traditional terrarium arrangement. omg i laughed when i saw this was the video you posted this week, i repotted mine a few days ago and it went into absolute shock and wilted to the point i was sure i had killed it! i gave it a thorough watering and i think that made it even worse as the leaves started to absorb too much water and either went soggy or crispy, i saw on a thread on reddit someone had the same thing happen after repotting and it seems like they absolutely despise being repotted! she saved hers by making a makeshift little greenhouse with a plastic wrap cover to increase humidity and it popped back up, ive done the same with mine by just chucking a plastic seal bag over the top upside down as i dont have anything else big enough to put it in and it seems to have helped! some leaves have perked back up but others look a bit too far gone. if anyone else has repotted and their fittonia is having a bad time then i would reccomend putting it in something that can cover it to increase humidity! it didn't care about humidity before i repotted it and misting it actually seemed to make the plant worse, but when you repot it seems to need some humidity to adjust and recover the little drama queen! such a dramatic plant but i have the pink angel version and it's so pretty that i'll put up with how dramatic they are! ps harli i never usually comment and just watch and enjoy videos but i absolutely adore your videos and you have such a relaxing and calming energy and at this point you are my favourite plant youtuber. love you and your channel and congrats on the pregnancy!
I have a pink fittonia and its doing pretty well so far. I'm in Louisiana so it's naturally very humid here, which this plant loves. I also keep the pot on top of a pebble-filled saucer so it gets humidy from the drained water that way too. It's on a north facing window under an awning so not very much light, but the leaves are standing tall and happy 😊
When I first bought my fittonia the little tag in the pot said it was and "easy" plant to grow. It's been a little over a year since then and I've definitely learned how untrue that tag was lol. Every time I think I'm making some progress, something else starts going wrong. It's still alive but struggling, hopefully I can make some adjustments based off this video that will help it more.
@@anitajones7090 Unfortunately I think mine was a little too far gone. A big issue ended up being the pot I had it in, it looked like it had a drainage hole with an attached dish, but apparently the drainage hole was completely sealed and I ended up drowning my plant basically 🙃. What little I managed to salvage from that did live for a good bit longer (after repotting of course) following tips from this video, but I had to have someone else look after it for like a week and it all went down hill again. I do want to try again, and hopefully now knowing how to take care of it properly from the get go, and starting fresh with a healthy plant, I’ll do better this time around.
I just lost my first fitonia so I searched and found another White Anne to keep me Anne company, following your wonderful and quirky advice, I will keep this Annie alive!!! Thanks !
Yes Fittonia can be a finicky plant and true you either love them or hate them, I love them and have that green one and am looking for the other varieties. Thanks Harli for all of the tips, I think you just have to watch your plant it will let you know what it needs. Great to see you as always, take care, love you girl, bye for now.
I bought my fittonia in complete dry soil. And it did soooo good. I'm giving it a heavy watering when it's completely dry and let the excess water drain. Never had wilting leafs. I love this plant. But I have a red one, I don't know if that makes a difference in care and watering. Thank you for this nice and informative video. I never knew how to propagate it. 🥰
I looooved my big bushy fittonias! Misted them once a day and kept on top of it for about 3 months. I went away for a couple of days, and was greeted with it having a full blown meltdown! That was the point I decided to chop it down a bit and make some closed terrariums... And it has worked a treat! 6 months into the experiment and they have thrived!.... Well one out of 3 had a bit of an issue, but it's still going after some troubleshooting 😊 but I really don't regret the decision, as now I have fittonias that are basically 0 maintenance.
You've been very informative. I just got my first stripes forever fittonia today. The demonstration for propagation made me smile. The plant I have is as big as the you'd shown. I wanted to learn how to repot the one that I have. But thanks for all of the information.
I just got three different fittonia varieties! I got the "White Forest Flame", the "Mont Blanc" and the "Pink Star" and I'm planning on putting them into my terrarium, where I ultimately want to house a praying mantis in. I want the plants to get used to their new surroundings before I get any animals, but I'm really hyped to get to decorate the terrarium with these beautiful plants! They really are an eye catcher!
I got two for my vivarium and they're struggling. Once my baby crested gecko gets bigger he's gonna live in it. It's 18x18x24. I need more tall plants.
I had one a long time ago, and fittonia is a perfect name for this fit throwing drama queen. My husband bought me one a week or so ago, and it has a little cotton wick on the bottom, so I keep a shallow glass dish under it and keep the wick wet. So far so good. Wondering if it can over water itself? I guess we will find out?
This plant gets on my nerves. No wonder they are called nerve plants. Killed 5 but never learn a lesson and i keep buying more. Love them but hate them too
I put my fittonia in an open top tank, set in the only window in my apartment that gets a small amount of morning sun. It's paired in there with a polka dot and they're both doing suprisingly well. I don't often water the tank but I do mist it every morning, my friend told my to and I just got into the habit and my polkadot went from a pathetic yellow stem to a pretty beefy plant!! It's still small and stringy but Im proud of both of the plants progress. My Fittonia doesn't really care about the humidity but the polkadot seems to enjoy a good spray
This was one of my first plants. I did a ton of research like you did and I killed it! My 2nd one I have had for over a year as a little guy and it is growing like a weed. 😋
Thank you so much for this video . Mine is so droopy …. Then I read online and watered it a ton 😵💫 it’s still droopy and I don’t know if it’s over watered ….. I can tell it’s still holding on but I want it to stand up and look healthy again . I moved its spot . I’m thinking of changing the pot and soil so it can be bottom watered like yours 😭 it’s such a precious little plant I just want to bring it back
I agree with you! The secret is with the bottom water! I accidentally discovered that and guess what? It helps the plant stay alive! Just make sure it doesn't breed mosquitoes and is kept clean.
I have three!! Ive got the white, pink and then a "red" which is just a much deeper pink. I have had really great luck with these. I was not aware they were that simple to propagate so that will be my next step.
I love this video! Thank you so much for sharing. Your information is clear and honest. So much more useful then the generalized labeling on the plant at purchase. Great job!
Glad I found this video! I have a tiny fittonia and have now moved it to my front room where it will get gentle northern light and hopefully it will thrive...
I love your channel! I have only gotten into plants recently but I always look forward to your videos! Your son will be very lucky to have such a loving family!☺️❤️
This is the second vid of yours I've watched. I'm subbing immediately because of the Rammstein poster. 💗 I'm sure I'll stay because of the good content.
This is the first vid I saw of hers and I was stoked at the rammstein poster as well. Rammstein was the first concert I ever went to when I was like 14 and was easily the very best! 💗
I'm glad I found this! I have a pink fittonia and I've spent a lot of time on it but it keeps getting leggier and leggier? It's the saddest looking houseplant I own at this point. Hopefully these tips will help it out a bit!
I have had mine outside for several weeks now out on my back porch. It gets early morning direct light but only for an hour or so per day. My difficulty comes from watering as well! The pot that it's in doesn't have very good drainage however! It really IS an odd plant but you won't know unless you TRY & then try try again if you're an over waterererer lol!!! We sometimes love our plants....to DEATH!!
would love to know if you’ve had success with these in your prop/humidity box 💛 just got my first fits today and was so happy to see you had a video on them 🧡🧡
Something I started doing a bit ago with plants that like moist soil but are also divas, I water it the normal way from up top and then later that night I get a couple paper towels fold them up into a square and put the plant on top of the paper towel and the paper towel pulls out all that extra water. I’ve been doing this for like a year now and my diva plants are thriving! I also do this every time I bring a new plant home because, I swear, these nurseries are committed to overwatering and killing plants!
My last shopping trip out to Meijers I picked one of these little guys up it's mixed pot of red and green leaves I keep it in a room with a skylight and near a humidifier and keep a mist bottle near it and I mist it once a day when I walk by.
My fittonia has been my easiest houseplant. So much I propagated her and those leaves are the only ones growing some roots I live in Maryland I keep my humidity around 45. I have a hot pink one I keep on a decor ladder right next to my window so it does get some direct sunlight and it loves it. I just got a baby pink one and she gets no direct sunlight at all so we shall see how she does. The moment the tallest leaf starts to lean I'll water it throughly. I also mist her every to every other day.
I rescued my pink fittonia from Walmart, it was...so sad and honestly I thought it might not make it. Also, I had never even heard of the word fitonia in my life 😂. I watered it when I got home, within a few hours it was tall and bright. She's been in a low to medium light room since then and is perfect. I also read that they needed sooo much attention but mine certainly didn't. Fish emulsion has helped her grow ALLOT!
I didn't realize Fittonias were supposed to be finicky tbh. Mine is just on my window sill and I water it whenever it starts to get a little droopy and it gets a little neglected sometimes but it looks pretty happy and healthy.
I love my red fittonia! I love it's little leaves and the pattern. 😍 I've been lucky with mine I guess. I've never had a problem! (So far 👀) hopefully it stays that way.
I test if it need watering bly lightly pressing down on the leaves. If they feel dense and the foliage has give then its fully watered and then the closer it gets to watering time the foliage feels less dense and doesn't have much give, then I water before it wilts :)
I was having such problems with mine. Finally managed to get the hang of it and I forgot to water it for a week and it just shrivelled up and died 😫 Defo want to try again. They’re such sweet and pretty plants💚
I have a mix, have had it for about a year now. SHE GREW LEGS galore 🙄 lol I have a mix of pink and lighter green nerve fittonias and I need to trim because I want them fuller. Ugh I never cut the flowers off when it bloomed , I just let it because I did know about plants and I thought it was best, and that was the start of the leg journey I feel lol
I agree about the watering thing! Mine gets bone dry and is perfectly okay. But I have the red one and someone told me the white one is the most dramatic? Have you ever noticed that?
Awesome video! Can you take cuttings and water propagate them any time during the year? Or is it better for the plant during certain seasons? It is winter now so I don't know if I take cuttings if the plant will grow for the next few months or maybe I should just wait until spring.
Hi!! I have a pretty new fittonia and my leaves are kind of curling in themself?? Does that make sense? Could that be from a cold draft from opening my window at night? It’s healthy but my leaves are getting damaged!
I have a pink and a white in my huge gecko cage. I spray the whole thing down heavily twice a day and they grow fine. The white has been flowering for months now
I love my fittonia, it's one of my favorites. I keep her in my bathroom where I have a small, south facing window and she also gets plenty of humidity from showers. I typically water it when I push on the leaves and there's no give if that makes sense. Like it's not wilting but it's not...bouncy?? Lol idk if I'm making any sense at all but she's been super happy so I'll take it
I just bought a fittonia few days back. lost a few leaves because i had no idea how to take care of it. Its in a very small pot. I am still trying to figure out how frequently to water it.
Hello Harli! I am so happy I discovered your channel - you are adorable and I love your humor. I was wondering if you have any advice about the pink variety - my green and white is THRIVING, but the pink and green leaves feel very stiff and it is not pushing out new growth. Confession: they were both very near an eastern facing window. Any advice anyone has is welcome (just please be nice, I’m new to this plant)! Thank you.
The comments section is going to be lit!🔥😂 Fittonia you either love them or hate them. I love them!
So true haha I love them also. They're beautiful!
who hate them? How can someone hate them? it's so cute like my cat when it's bushy and small leaves.. 😊
So true about how quickly they wilt! In the morning it will be absolutely fine and by evening it is limp despite no temperature change.
You've been very informative. I just got my first stripes forever fittonia today. The demonstration for propagation made me smile. The plant I have is as big as the you'd shown. I wanted to learn how to repot the one that I have. But thanks for all of the information.
I pinched my little Fittonia and stuck them right back in to the soil. I hope they do ok! They seem to be good so far. Love your channel!!
This was so helpful. I just purchased one. She looked dead and instantly came to life after potting her properly.
Super helpful! My mom got one of these, and asks for my help bc she knows im a huge plant nerd, but I've never had one! Thanks for sharing
i really love fittonia,i have 3 types of fittonia, they really dont like over watering and direct sunlight, make me challenge at first☺️keep on sharing
How's your plant doing?
@@poopyrose8180 my new puppy destroyed it. 😫
Just got one today do you have a pic of the cotton wick
This plant gets on my nerves. No wonder they are called nerve plants. Killed 5 but never learn a lesson and i keep buying more. Love them but hate them too
I'm so glad I found this channel I'm struggling with this plant right now
I put my fittonia in an open top tank, set in the only window in my apartment that gets a small amount of morning sun.
Thank you so much! I've tried many times but you give me the confidence to try once more.
This video is a life saver! I just was given one and had no idea what to do with it. Thank you so much, your videos are all so informative!
I have 3 Fittonias, some how never had any issues with them. Basically ignored them and they r thriving
Nowshin Pial same!
This was one of my first plants. I did a ton of research like you did and I killed it! My 2nd one I have had for over a year as a little guy and it is growing like a weed. 😋
What did you learn about them?
Thank you so much for this video . Mine is so droopy …. Then I read online and watered it a ton 😵💫 it’s still droopy and I don’t know if it’s over watered ….. I can tell it’s still holding on but I want it to stand up and look healthy again . I moved its spot . I’m thinking of changing the pot and soil so it can be bottom watered like yours 😭 it’s such a precious little plant I just want to bring it back
I’m so glad you made this. I recently got one from my mom and it’s not happy at all!
You are such a genuine person- you and your mom both!!! One of these days I am gonna buy a Deliciosa t-shirt!!!
🌿🌿🌿🦉🌿🌿🌿
I have a pink striped one that looks like this , I just got a small cutting stuck it in another plant and it’s doing great tfs
Really good info on fittonia, for those of us that like them. Yours is only nice looking one I’ve seen outside of a greenhouse. Doing a great job!!
good advice. just bought my first fittonia...btw I love your Rammstein poster 🙂
It’s doing so well i love her so much i couldn’t get her to grow at all and she is growing so well now omg i love her !!!!!!!
Love love these dramatic guys~~~^^!
I love your videos so much and I am so excited to see your little bebe boy!
Just got the fertilizer you recommend and gotta be the honest.. the smell, WOW. I really hope my mini suffering is worth it for my plants, haha!
I have my fittonia too and this video is very much helpful to me. Soon i will try to take video too.
That Rammstein poster... :) Heavy Girl! Cheers! Great video!
I'm glad I found this! I have a pink fittonia and I've spent a lot of time on it but it keeps getting leggier and leggier? It's the saddest looking houseplant I own at this point. Hopefully these tips will help it out a bit!
thanks for the tips :) I just bought a fittonia cutting and can't wait for it to arrive!
I have a couple of new Fittonias, still trying to figure them out so this video was really helpful, thanks!
So much I propagated her and those leaves are the only ones growing some roots
I live in Maryland I keep my humidity around 45.
Thank you for this!! I just bought one the other day and don't know what she wants yet 😬
You got this! (:
Bought one yesterday for £2.49 at Aldi and came across this video in wanting to know how to care for it
Whoop whoop!!!! Yay! So excited to watch a new video!!!!😍😍😍
Thank you so so much!
I rescued my pink fittonia from Walmart, it was...so sad and honestly I thought it might not make it. Also, I had never even heard of the word fitonia in my life 😂. I watered it when I got home, within a few hours it was tall and bright. She's been in a low to medium light room
since then and is perfect. I also read that they needed sooo much attention but mine certainly didn't. Fish emulsion has helped her grow ALLOT!
Also thank you for the propagation tips! I love propagating ...
I didn't realize Fittonias were supposed to be finicky tbh. Mine is just on my window sill and I water it whenever it starts to get a little droopy and it gets a little neglected sometimes but it looks pretty happy and healthy.
Me either, I just water mine when it droops and it seems fine & perks back up. Now I’m stressing to hear it’s finicky. 😂
Love your poster!! RAmmstein rocks lol
Finally managed to get the hang of it and I forgot to water it for a week and it just shrivelled up and died 😫
Defo want to try again. They’re such sweet and pretty plants💚
So helpful thankyou all the way from England keep safe and take care
I have the smallest little fittonia and i was wondering if you have any tips to make it grow faster (its a little plug)
I put my fittonia in a hydroponic leca set up and it loves it 💚
I agree about the watering thing! Mine gets bone dry and is perfectly okay. But I have the red one and someone told me the white one is the most dramatic? Have you ever noticed that?
Thanks for the tips, and omg I love your shirt! Where did you get it?
Thank you so much for this tips and tricks about Fittonia.
Awesome video! Can you take cuttings and water propagate them any time during the year? Or is it better for the plant during certain seasons? It is winter now so I don't know if I take cuttings if the plant will grow for the next few months or maybe I should just wait until spring.
What a beautiful plant!
YESSS! I BOTTOM water it once a week and its THRIVING!
You should try the fittonia ‘Frankie’ it’s one of the prettiest varieties!
The white has been flowering for months now
I just received my first Fittonia today - it came with a self watering pot so 🤞🏽it survives!!
I need to repot my Fittonia, is there a certain soil that you recommend?
I love my fittonia, it's one of my favorites. I keep her in my bathroom where I have a small, south facing window and she also gets plenty of humidity from showers. I typically water it when I push on the leaves and there's no give if that makes sense. Like it's not wilting but it's not...bouncy?? Lol idk if I'm making any sense at all but she's been super happy so I'll take it
These are so lovely i wish they had it in my country.
I just bought a fittonia few days back. lost a few leaves because i had no idea how to take care of it. Its in a very small pot. I am still trying to figure out how frequently to water it.
Simple useful informations , I like fittonia👍🌹🌺
Hello Harli! I am so happy I discovered your channel - you are adorable and I love your humor.
I was wondering if you have any advice about the pink variety - my green and white is THRIVING, but the pink and green leaves feel very stiff and it is not pushing out new growth. Confession: they were both very near an eastern facing window. Any advice anyone has is welcome (just please be nice, I’m new to this plant)! Thank you.
One more bit of info - the white is more mature (8” pot), and the pink is a baby (3” pot”).
