- Ships owned by the Weller brothers in New Zealand in 1830s exchanged sea products for groceries and other goodies.
There once was a ship that put to sea
The name of the ship was the Billy O' Tea
The winds blew up, her bow dipped down
Oh blow, my bully boys, blow
Soon may the Wellerman come
To bring us sugar and tea and rum
One day, when the tonguing is done
We'll take our leave and go
She'd not been two weeks from shore
When down on her a right whale bore
The captain called all hands and swore
He'd take that whale in tow
Soon may the Wellerman come
To bring us sugar and tea and rum
One day, when the tonguing is done
We'll take our leave and go
The wellermen were three brothers from Folkestone in Kent who emigrated to Australia and set up a trading company.
Not quite right. The Weller Bros were a Sydney whaling firm that established shore whaling stations on the southern coast of New Zealand. The whales were hunted from rowing boats, and the Weller ships made regular calls to collect whale oil and bone, and to drop off supplies. At that time there were hardly any Europeans living in NZ, no settlements. The British colonisation did not happen until the 1850s.
Lovely
