Expensive guitars are like a certificate of achievement. It's like you've given yourself a little pat on the back for having had a good year. I don't own many top drawer instruments, but those I do have are lovely to play and sound great. But then again, so are my cheap Harley Bentons. The high end guitars, though, are more of a representation of life turning out how you hoped. Just my two penneth.

Hi Colin, I've been primarily a Les Paul player for 30 years, a few years ago I owned no less than 4 Gibsons plus an American Tele. I've since sold them off and have been having a lot of fun with the new Epiphones. I currently own 3 of them. I no longer play live and only record occasionally (on friends projects). They're all great guitars, and it's really nice not worrying so much about the occasional nick or scratch.

Special guitars, regardless of price, make you play better because they bring out emotional playing. I have a partscaster that’s the best Strat I ever played & everyone that touches it agrees. I have 3 LPs that are Frankenstein’s and two of them are magical. Each make me play differently because they each have their own voice
I for one thought you played some of your best on that 54 reissue. It’s a good one man, if it makes you play like that, it would be sad to let that go. It’s not the guitar we sometimes sell, it’s the emotion it gave while playing we regret selling.

I think the big attraction for the more expensive guitars, is that they somehow make you play them. It's kind of weird. You see the guitar on it's stand and it just seems to pull you toward it to play. You don't really get that with cheap guitars. I think getting an expensive guitar can motivate some people to play it a lot more!

I think it depends. Some people buy one guitar and just play that constantly. Some buy the expensive guitar simply because they can afford to, but they don't really play it. It's more a thing they want to start getting into, and think they should have the best to start with. Some buy as an investment and they are thinking about the future of the guitar and the value it will have later, so they end up not playing it much in fear of reducing that value by damaging it.
Sometimes people spend so much time lusting after something and when they get it, the thrill of the chase is gone, and they no longer have a desire to play it. If you are inspired to play guitar, that comes regardless of the price of the guitar. Expensive is in the eye of the beholder. In the early 90's, $1000 for a guitar was expensive for me. Now, $3500 is the expensive guitar. But at this point, there isn't a big difference between a $1000 guitar and a $3500 guitar. My Les Paul isn't $2500 better than my PRS McCarty SE.
It's really what guitar inspires me to play and it all depends on what kind of music I'm in the mood to play at that moment. I want to jam on blues, I pick up my Strat. I want to play rock, the LP or McCarty. I want to play metal, the Ibanez, etc.

You ask - MY short answer: YES!
I had a collection of 8 „affordable“ guitars from Epiphone because of my „hunt for all classic Gibson designs“. In the end 75% of my playing time I used my Gibson R8 Les Paul and my Gibson ES 335. The Epi‘s (Firebird, Korina Flying V, Korina Explorer and some Les Pauls) were all great guitars but I personally feel more inspired by playing the Gibsons. And YES I feel that my playing is better when I am inspired in this way!
You show very well in your videos how good those Epiphone‘s are and I 100% agree.
And because of the fact these guitars deserve to be played more I decided to sell them all - were gone within 2 days for a good price 👍
For a big part of the incoming money I bought my “last” dream guitar - a 2014 Gibson R6 Goldtop with P90😊 - amazing guitar😮
Is it 10 times better than one of the Epi LPs? No - not 10 times but definitely another world!
I couldn’t agree with your final thoughts of the comparison between the Gibson and the Epi Special TV Yellow!
The Special was one of the guitars I sold and I really think that it made a massive difference how and what you play, because I noticed a huge difference in my own comparison!
Here is my longer opinion to your question - and my personal thoughts:
    - It‘s the decision everybody must make on his own:
    - Do you love great guitars and have the money for it - buy it!
    - Do you love to have various models and play them all - go this way!
    Sorry for the long post!
Thanks a lot for your fine videos, Colin! Keep the Goldi !
    Greetings from the Germany! 😎🎸

No slow opening of a (usually great smelling) case, no fine nitro lacquer. It was a short "high". I have now sold a few guitars again and only buy "expensive" guitars (but that may well start at £1000). It can also be cheaper. My 2010 Gibson Melody Maker cost around £400 and is one of my main guitars. So I definitely tend to own less but more valuable guitars. And your Les Paul is fantastic. I would keep it. In 2003 that was a RIDICULOUS price for an Epiphone. But because I had fallen in love with the brand and I wanted something special, I bought myself the best instrument I could afford. I’ve never regretted it. But I’ve also never had the itch to buy anything more expensive. Like you said, I realize an expensive guitar won’t make me sound any better. I sound just as good playing my $1,100 Custom as I do my $250 used Epiphone Les Paul Studio. Yeah, it’s always a special feeling when I pull the Custom out and let it rip, but it’s just a guitar, like all my others. The price doesn’t make it (or me) any better. If you can afford something super high priced or if it’s something you’ve always dreamed of, by all means, buy it. But don’t think it makes you any better than the kid who feels lucky to have a $100 pawn shop guitar. Whether it costs $4,000 or $100, if a guitar makes you feel good when you play it, that’s what matters! CHEERS!

One thing that I think must be said, is that how much one can be inspired by the guitar/gear one is using. I have high end custom shop guitars from both Gibson and Fender , and I have had a few of each that I have let go - with no regrets. I also have more affordable guitars from the far east! Some have been great, some quickly sold. I think it is a combination of how we perceive the guitar to be in terms of construction/quality - I love the fact that my Epi Coronet is made from a two piece body, and one piece neck - whereas my Vintage V100 was not. And it was apparent in the way it played and sounded; sold it; it was not special. Great guitars inspire because of their look, the way they play, their heritage. And so called lesser guitars don't always do that.

Love inexpensive guitars. One of my favorite guitars is a 2012 Squier SE Strat. I got it from a thrift store for 90 rockets out the door. Maybe a little pricey for an SE but as soon as I picked it up I knew I would be mine. It has a stock Squier AAA+ flame maple neck topped with a beautiful rosewood fingerboard and gorgeous 3 color burst gloss finished body . It's heavily modded now with high end electronics and hardware, plays like a dream. Cheers!

Wow first of all what fantastic videos…I’ve spent hours watching all these les Paul’s videos…brilliant! Absolutely brilliant
It’s the personal connection and how it makes you feel and the A/B comparisons which are so valuable and as your honesty at not defending £4k worth of Gibson when £400 or Epiphone is just as enjoyable…
For you it’s definitely a case of enjoying the journey as much as the destination….I recognise the traits…for me vintage bicycles, beautiful steel bikes of the 80’s and 90’s …I used to spend hours tinkering with vingatge hifi, valve amps from Radford and Quad, buying GEC valves etc etc Quad electrostatics etc etc
Don’t be bashful that you love the researching, buying , tinkering and after a few months onto the next…absolutely nothing wrong with that….I totally get it…the enjoyment of that is equal to the final product…
Buy and sell and be happy I say…of and regards the channel please don’t change a thing 🤓👍🏻

Col thats spot on reasoning- the ideas we have in our heads (save us from ourselves etc). If you save one person from unessecary financial burden then job well done - I do suspect it will be more than 1 and hope so too. Ive recently developed a wanting for one of these R4s and my weakness is that I am conditioned by the Gibson brand, legend and countless historical heroic ambassadors. I cant afford it so that puts it safely to bed for me .But one thing they do have going for them is that nearly 70 odd years later these things still work, so i think theres an argument in proven longevity which cant help but appeal in this disposable age of ours. I have an Irish friend though who tells me theres something in the wanting, his meaning is that its worth considering keeping on wanting because that emotion of wanting has some value, and control of it even more so . Bit like meeting your heroes -be careful they might disappoint.
Anyway im rambling-Keep up the awesome work Col -Love your channel and perspective (oh and your Clash bites BTW)

Ok, i have an epiphone black beautey les paul (500 quid), a gibson "slash" goldtop"(2500 quid) and a custom shop r8(4 grand). The r8 is miles ahead of the other 2 guitars because of how it feels! I think alot of people overlook the real magic of the custom shop, the price is not just replicated in the tone, its the feel. When i pick up the epiphone and the slash les paul, they are great guitars but when i pick up the r8, it blows the other 2 out of the water and that's before I play a note. Its the finish, the craftsmanship and the execution. That's my experience with custom shop vs "cheap" Love the channel, keep up the great content.

    AMEN re: Murphy Labs.
I recommend "My First Guitar, to see if I can get into it" buyers buy an American made Strat. If you won't be keeping it, you can sell it fast & easily. If it tips over, pick it up & keep playing. If you need parts, there's nothing with as many aftermarket options. Always consider the possibility when you're shopping discount brands or sweatshop versions of major brands - that you pick one with the best available pickups. Installing/testing aftermarket stuff on my guitars has been a hobby I'm thoroughly enjoying....except for pickup replacement. Just because man *can* solder, doesn't mean he *should* solder.
The EPI LP Special is a great example of incredible value. The P90s are great & you're dealing with basics. It's also a super light guitar. It's got less neck angle than the Gibson version & IMO, neck angles can only improve til they're flat. I went even cheaper though, and got a Harley Benton (delivered from Germany to eastern Canada in 6 days for $438 CDN, it arrived in tune!). The pickups in the HB are pure garbage. I should have bought the Epiphone.

An idea for guitar comparos is record the 1st one thru a looper for a while then plug the next one in and start/stop the loop then play for quick comparison. Love your videos. Ive always felt if I made my living playing Id invest in a top of the line 6k tool but as a hobbyist Korean made ESP Ltd Eclipses are my favorite for a grand or less. I picked up a used EC256p w p90s for $200 i love. Put some Lollar p90s and Hipshot locking tuners on and will keep it bc it was such a good deal and looks great black and gold Custom style. Gibson 60s slim necks are too thick for me the Ltd neck is noticeably thinner to my liking.

I bought the Epi LP Special pretty much off the back of one of your vids, just loved that P90 sound, and to be honest its probably one of my favourite sounding and playable guitars! Just crazy good for bucks. Also just bought the Epi Firebird, wanted the Gibson but they are never in stock and TBH its £1200 cheaper and am blown away by it. If you constantly pick it up and it makes you smile who cares whats on the headstock! great vid as always mate cheers! :)

You’re totally right Colin, super expensive are not worth it.
I have a couple of similarly expensive guitars that don’t make me sound better and I’m nervous I might dink them so they have become pension investments. My go to are £500 strat and £500 tele and a brace of second hand Eastman 335 look a likes. I’m really comfortable with all of these and occasionally swap pickups around to get new tones.
My best advice is get something affordable and decent, then spend on amps and a decent modellers or pedals.

Not perfect (that's a good thing, IMHO), but so much fun to watch and listen to! Your channel is a pleasure to visit and I'm always glad I stayed til the end. Great Film Colin!!! Like many Musicians, I have had many Guitars, Basses, Keyboards, Amps and Processers., You make Great Points in what You said about the "excitement factor" relative to one guitar versus checking out many, not only for Your series, but for the fun and discovery of it!! You, I, and many others are SG Lovers, and Love Telecasters, but both of Us have a couple Les Pauls stashed for fun, depth of tone, and change up once in a while. You have Demo's on three Nice Goldtops which offer quite a bit, and other company's offer Les Paul designs with P90's. So, Go For What You Want and What Excites You!!! I Dearly Love Your Shows and always look forward to them!!Love Your different Guitar Reviews and in depth look into them as everyone else does!!! ROCK ON MATE!!! Great Show!!!! Have a Great Week!!!! Cheers!!!

Hello Colin. This excellent video really hits home with me as a guitar addict . I certainly enjoy all my guitars , whether they were inexpensive or not, but having the custom shop and vintage Gibsons fills the void and makes me appreciate all the others and holds of the G.A.S. until something comes along that reignites the desire. Enjoy life and best wishes!

I recently traded 6 great guitars and 2 amps for a 2021 Murphy Lab ‘58 Reissue Gibson Les Paul in Bourbon Burst. Absolutely worth it! Incredible sounding and playing guitar. Played it exclusively for awhile. Will never get rid of it, but I still can’t wait to pick up and play my Tokai Les Pauls. Or my Aria Pro ii Les Pauls. Or my Hamer Explorers and Gibson Nighthawk, etc. I think it is a mind thing. A curiosity of what’s around the next corner. But also an appreciation of the art and beauty of the different kinds of guitars. But whatever the reason, we keep “scratching that itch” to find our Holy Grail! Love your channel. Greetings from across the pond in Florida!

The technical money on a guitar is in the materials, the fretwork and the factory setup. That can be done excellently for around a 1000 pounds. But the cosmetics are very labour intensive, so a really nice looking guitar will be more expensive.

I understand what you’re saying about high end and low end guitars. Nowadays they are so much closer together than they’ve ever been. However this particular guitar. When you look at the camera after you’ve strummed a cord your face has just lit up. A lot more than on the other guitars. If you sell this one you will regret and miss it. There’s something about seeing your connection to it that just resonates. In the end you need to do what makes you happy at that time. Fantastic playing by the way.

Great "food for thought" video....I just bought my first custom shop Les Paul less than a month ago. A 2011 plain top 58 cherry burst. Used but not abused, all stock!!..The first thing I noticed was the clarity of the notes when I played. It's just "there" and it's "better" to these old ears than almost all of my other Les Paul's. Notice that I say "almost". It doesn't blow all the others into the weeds!! For me, it's a winner. BUT, my Epiphone's made in Japan, China, Korea and my US Standard LP's still bring me a tremendous amount of enjoyment and sonic performance for a fraction of the cost!!! A couple of them come very very close to the Custom Shop's performance. IMHO, if you can afford a custom shop, find a good used one. You'll save money and you might just find that special guitar of a lifetime!! Colin, if you save that 54, I wouldn't say it's a mistake at all. I heard some magic in your playing on the out going jam. That was great!!! Cheers!! Bryan

I agree with your final thoughts. I buy Epi and squiers on the used market. thereby saving a ton of cash and able to buy a decent guitar. Your channel throws in the odd Gibson, but I watch because of the wonderful affordable guitars you display on the channel. Cheers!

I have several expensive ($2k - $3K) guitars and quite a few inexpensive (under $1K) guitars. I always pick up one of the expensive guitars to play. I rarely play the inexpensive ones. They're good guitars. I just don't play them. It's not about how the guitar feels. It's about how the guitar makes me feel. If inexpensive guitars speak to you, play them. There are plenty of quality inexpensive guitars to choose from. If you don't understand why people who play expensive guitars prefer expensive guitars... well, you probably never will.

IMO, more important to make sure you spend your money on a ‘decent’ amp to enhance the tones of your affordable or expensive guitars.
