  • Riding a motorcycle is lowkey stressful lol but I love every minute of it.
    In this video, I take you on a 40 minute motorcycle ride on the Honda Rebel 300. I'll talk about the highs and lows of riding a motorcycle, and how it's not as easy as one might think.
    The Honda Rebel 300 is a great beginner motorcycle. It's lightweight, easy to handle, and has a comfortable seat. It's also very affordable, which makes it a great option for first-time riders.
    The highs of riding a motorcycle are many. It's a great way to get around, and it's a lot of fun. You can feel the wind in your hair and the sun on your face.
    The lows of riding a motorcycle are few, but they can be serious. One of the biggest dangers is other drivers. Cars often don't see motorcycles, and they can easily pull out in front of you or cut you off. Another danger is the weather. If it's raining or snowing, it can be very dangerous to ride a motorcycle. And my goodness is it tiring! Especially on longer rides. You always have to stay sharp and look out for hazards.
    If you're thinking about getting a motorcycle, I highly recommend it. It's a great way to get around, and it's a lot of fun. Just be sure to practice and be safe.

    Its okay to be paranoid when you ride! It will go away with time. Being paranoid is a healthy reaction learning to ride, it will keep you safe. It means you respect riding and we all know what happens when you lose respect.

    As a fellow rebel 300 rider. I use the rebel as my commuter. You need to ring it out. You can take it up to 10,000 RPM's. 1st gear to 17-20mph 2nd gear up to 30-35 mph. At least for accelerating then you cruise at 3rd and 4th. Between 30-50mph. As for long rides, the more you do it the easier it becomes. You start to be able to differentiate dangerous situations from not. When you first start riding your fear has you on super high alert. Eventually it dials down. You stay aware but you're not as high strung if that makes sense. Keep progressing!

    You're out on the road and getting more confident. The more you do it the more confident you'll become - so long as you don't become over confident. As I might have said before ride to your skill and comfort level, the conditions (of the road and the weather) and to the capabilities of your bike. You're videos are steady and the sound is clear. The most difficult part of any ride is trying to anticipate what others on the road especially those in cars are going to do. Keeping alert is a challenge but it should detract from the enjoyment of a ride. Keep the videos coming.

    a great way to get comfortable with riding is to follow the experienced rider. Your nerves calm down knowing all you need to do is follow and watch what lines they take, and knowing that they will see the obstacles first. Your muscle memory will automatically form while watching them. As your rides start getting longer, just make a stop before the return trip to grab a water or something with electrolytes, stretch, and have a small snack with protein, then your return trip will feel as fresh as the first leg of it. If you have the opportunity to ride a horse, spend a couple hours horseback riding, you will not believe how it will build your riding confidence. But caution, you will start talking to your bike lol.

    • @RidewithRea
      @RidewithRea  Рік тому +1

      I'm a visual learner so this would probably help a ton! Thank you & I'll have to try horseback riding lol (I already talk to myself out loud when I ride hehe, just a nervous habit I think 😂)

      @eggheadrocks8224 Рік тому

      @@RidewithRea I talk to myself, God and the bike when I ride, it's all part of the wind therapy. I grew up around horses and bikes, I always catch myself patting the side of my tank and saying "atta boy" and when its time to get fuel, I say "lets stop and get my good boy a drink". As you go from "rider" to "biker" it's normal to form a relationship with your bike, because during that transition, your bike becomes an extension of yourself. You get to a point that you and your bike are as one, your bike intuitively moving as you move, and things such as steering, slowing, and stopping become second nature and you do them without even thinking...it just becomes fluid and natural.

    The swivel head is the hard part, that's where complacency sets in and affects your awareness. But that said, the anxiety does go away. I started on a 250cc bike in the MSF then bought an old 81' Honda Silverwing and only rode it a few miles, spent more time wrenching than riding then it sat for a couple years and I rode a buddy's VStar 1100 and I found an '09 Yamaha Stratoliner 1900cc with < 8k miles on it and I bought it for $6k and rode it for an hour and half home. Skipped the Interstate for the maiden voyage which was so worth it otherwise would've shaved off like an hour on drive time but having not rode for a couple years and stepping up to a 1900 muscle bike, it was rocky for the first few miles but over the first week of ownership I quickly started getting the hang of the bike and am more than half way to 9k miles on the bike!

    Don't be afraid to change position to keep yourself safe. Generally the middle of the lane is a good place to be, with slight left/right deviation to get a better view of bends.
    But also go right ahead and dodge road surface hazards (in a safe way, i.e. don't leave the lane, mirrors/lifesaver before you commit) or to make room for oncoming traffic.
    Your top priority when positioning is safety. If that means you don't get as good a view - go ahead and slow down a bit if needed.
    Two example situations from me:
    1. You're in a bend to the right. Your ideal view of the road ahead will be when you're all the way over, almost touching the centre line. HOWEVER, there's always a risk of oncoming traffic adopting a "racing line" and cutting into your lane. They shouldn't do it, but they do. So unless you want to risk a mouthful of car, you can't be there. You should be closer to the middle of your lane so that you have a good chance to spot and dodge any idiots cutting over. This applies doubly so in sharper bends, as you don't see far at all, and people tend to cut further.
    2. When oncoming traffic is a bus or a lorry... go ahead and move over to the right until you're past. The wind blast you get, especially when you're closer, can be quite unpleasant and enough to completely unsettle you & the bike. It's not worth the risk, just shift over outside the big thing's flow field.
    The book I cannot recommend enough is called "Motorcycle Roadcraft". It's the British police riders' bible. Best way to become safer on the road. Before you do anything else, order yourself a copy (they do PDF as well, if you don't want to wait for international shipping).

    If you get a chin mount for your Go Pro, a purple panda mic (Amazon) with a wind sock, mounted to the inside of your chin guard gives very clear sound.

    All the fears and anxiety you are feeling is normal and will go away in time. I can promise you that, especially with the shifting of gears..you will develop muscle memory and you'll just start doing it automatically without even thinking about it. All I can say is just keep riding, the more you do it the more natural it will start to feel and you will begin to enjoy it more. BWT...senas are total game changers when riding with others. I can not imagine every riding in a group without a communications device. As for tips with wind noise while recording..try a purple panda mic and make sure you use the wind muff for it. Also make sure your external mic is inside your helmet and change the gopro audio settings to "wind". This will dramatically cut wind noise out so that you can vlog while riding and still hear bike engine noise very very mildly.

A year from now I’m sure you’ll think back at this time and think, wow I can’t believe how nervous I was back them lol. Please just remember as you get more comfortable you start being less careful out there. Always make sure you practice safe riding.

    Once you start feeling relaxed riding take something like a California Super Bike class, IT will improve your skills significantly. I'm not a track rider but the skills I learned made me a much better (safer) rider.

    I just sold a 2002 BMW R1150R. I just turned 65 years old and I still want to ride; I just want to ride something smaller; Something I can handle without fear of tipping it over when I put it on its center stand...I was at my local motorcycle shop looking at small cc. bikes, and the Honda Rebel looked nice to me...But it was like the usual "machismo" attitude; "small bike,small balls", wheelies, back tire burnouts and shit like that which really turned me off!! I believe that I would like a bike to get me around town on, and maybe an occasional visit to Lake Michigan now & then ...( I live in Grand Rapids, MI.; Lake Michigan is only 35-40 mi. away..) I'm beginning to believe that a Honda Rebel with its solo seat would be a good choice for Me...

    Did you get the feeling like your head was being pushed forward when sitting still after? I have a cb300r and you sit a bit forward so you have to brace your neck forward as well.. I took a 45 min ride out to a city nearby for lunch (and fun) and so I ended up doing just over an hour and a half on the highway and when I got home it felt like my head was constantly being pushed forward lol

    I've got 2 days left till my new battery comes in for my '18 V Star 250 to start practicing again in earnest. Other owners complain they're in 4th already by like 30MPH? That's with the stock 16/45 sprockets. I'm going to change to a 112 link Oring chain from the 114-link stock one too, with 17/43 sprockets. That should lower RPM at highway speeds by 300-600RPM? Besides broadening the shift points. Initial fear slowly gives way to confidence as you ride, they say? I'll see soon, now that my final hip replacement in June '23 is healing nicely. Don't need the walker or cane too much anymore as a result. So, my balance should be improved enough to make a good difference? Keep going, you seem to be doing it right?!

What I wanted to say to you is Apprehension is normal, but if you concentrate on lane position and " where is my out " as a subconscious habit.... then the rest comes to you Au - Natural ... [ You don't think, you just do ], and the ride becomes soooo much more fun.
    Stay Safe

    Would the reason your shifting so much at low speeds be because your shifting to soon? I have a Vulcan S and I don't shift until I'm at or above 5000 rpm, keeping the rpm up helps me with engine braking and accelerating out of corners plus I'm not shifting as much in town. Its perfectly happy running at 6000 rpm, I'M the one who had to get used to it lol!
    The more you ride the more you will enjoy it, the head on a swivel and looking for hazards becomes second nature to the point you don't even think about it anymore. Its a journey, just remember where you were a few months ago compared to now, your doing great.

    The highway is actually safer compared to street riding, all cars goes one direction and drivers are more aware and decisive in their movement, however the Rebel 300 is not a good candidate for long highway riding, too light and in the US a bike for a real highway ride should be capable of riding on the fastest lane. Side roads are more fun, but more dangerous than a lot would like to admit :D , cross streets, undecisive drivers, pedestrians, cyclist, name it, they have it in the streets :D

    You just need to build muscle memory by riding daily. Every cell in your body has memory, and it needs repetition. Once you have it, it'll be fun. Insta360 is way more fun. You'll want 2 of them. Get the X3, and mount it elsewhere for a different perspective.

    You might hear this a lot, but I will say it anyway. You should've got the Rebel 500 instead. I personally think that it is the perfect beginner bike, as it handles just like the Rebel 300 but has more power to get up and go, so it is more capable of staying at highway speed (and thus, you don't outgrow it that soon). As for your fear of the highway, I will recommend wholeheartedly that you ride with your boyfriend so you have someone to guide you on your first ride, and believe it or not, after that first ride on the highway, whatever was holding you back will be gone.
    Just keep riding, and be safe!

    What do you mean no one warned you? Perhaps they thought you would understand the glaringly obvious issues, like you are only on 2 wheels and you are completely exposed to the elements.......or that cars are 4 times larger and heavier......open your eyes these things are pretty darn obvious.
