      Eventually, the mountain dulcimer becomes an extension of oneself... The music that feels natural to one's soul emerges spontaneously! I am pleased that you have met the mountain dulcimer; enjoy the process of getting to know it ever better, and thank you so much for your kind words! :-)

    Been playing dulcimer on and off for about 45 years. No teachers, not much in the way of recordings to point in any direction. Loving these videos. They showcase some of the techniques that I worked out for myself, point the way to new ones I can learn.

    A beautiful piece beautifully played. Two days ago I had never heard of a mountain dulcimer until I saw one for sale. I searched youtube and found you. The sound of your relaxed playing persuaded me to give it a try, so I now own that dulcimer. I would love to learn this piece. Do you have a tab or lesson available? I would greatly appreciate it.

    Oh the summer time is coming
    And the trees are sweetly blooming
    Where the wild mountain thyme
    Grows around the blooming heather
    Would you go, lassie, go?
    And we'll all go together
    Where the wild mountain thyme
    Grows around the blooming heather
    Would you go, lassie, go?
    And I will build my love a bower
    And yon pure crystal fountain
    And around it I will place
    All the colors of the mountain
    Would you go, lassie, go?
    And we'll all go together
    Where the wild mountain thyme
    Grows around the blooming heather
    Would you go, lassie, go?
    And If my true love's gone
    I will surely find another
    And to her I will sing
    Things that make her know I want her
    Would you go, lassie, go?
    And we'll all go together
    Where the wild mountain thyme
    Grows around blooming heather
    Would you go, lassie, go?

    Jessica. Thanks for this. I have been away from West Virginia for too long and you took me back to precious memories of sitting at Granny's feet listening to the most heartwarming music a young boy could ever hear. That is absolutely beautiful, Jessica. I know the tune better as Will Ye Go Lassie Go, but the name's not important as it's a beautiful air.
    I play ukulele and banjo and I've been toying with the idea of getting a mountain dulcimer for a while. I couldn't imagine playing the way you do, but would it be difficult for a beginner to get a decent tune out of it?
    Most of my tunes are from the oldtime banjo repertoire and folksongs from my area, so I'd not be doing anything over complicated.

    • @JessicaComeauDulcimer
      @JessicaComeauDulcimer  5 років тому +1

      I have heard people say that they found the mountain dulcimer to be much easier to catch on to than guitar, actually! It’s sound is immediately rewarding because of its open tuning. You can move along the melody string and have a consistent drone in the background. Eventually, layering the melody with chords can be fairly simple if you attend carefully to your fingering, making sure you leave enough fingers free to take the melody while you are still holding the chord positions. :-) Give it a try, if you like!

      Thank you, tossedpenny. I have used acoustic transducers some in the past, but I tend to prefer using a microphone these days to amplify my instruments. Microphones seem to pick up more of the natural frequencies of the mountain dulcimer's sound than the little transducers or pickups do. :-)

      What a wonderful new musical world you are about to discover with the mountain dulcimer! ;-) Thank you for your kind words, Rick. Yes, I do have instructional videos for mountain dulcimer music: a DVD that comes with my book and DVD set "Mountain Dulcimer Wildflowers" and a series of downloadable Celtic song workshops that provide measure-by-measure instruction for each song. You can learn more about these materials here: www.jessicacomeaudulcimer.com/products.html

    Not many others play as beautifully and relaxed. I play the harp at the bedside and if I could only play my dulcimer as you do- it too would be used as I play for those who are ill!

      I have always thought that playing the mountain dulcimer as a part of music therapy would be comforting not only for the listener but, in a way, the musician as well! :-)

      What a wonderful way to share your music. Playing for the dying in hospice care, for those very ill or critically injured, for those suffering mental anguish or emotional devastation, for the homeless, for groups or for just one lonely soul... there is no better or more beautiful way to share God's wonderful gift to all of mankind in music. God bless you, Cindy and Debby. And of course you too, Jessica, for so generously sharing your music with all of us.

      I love this song, Tim... Thank you for visiting! I play McSpadden Dulcimers. Here is their website for more information: www.mcspaddendulcimers.com/

    • @JessicaComeauDulcimer
      @JessicaComeauDulcimer  7 років тому

      I saw that you had sent me another message, Tim, but I’m not sure where it went! In response to your question, I have always played in D-A-D or C-G-C without bridge compensation, and I am told that bridge compensation makes only a very slight difference when transitioning from D-A-A to D-A-D tuning. If you are purchasing a new instrument, you might want to consider ridge compensation, but it is not essential. :-)

    • @timblackwood1531
      @timblackwood1531 7 років тому

      Jessica Comeau thank you for your replay ! I don't think compensation is a problem on dulcimers too, mind you string height is very important and too much can make a big difference! Keep up the good work Jessica you're a pleasure to watch.

    Funny. It took me falling in love the Clancy Brothers' versionas "Will ye go Lassie go" to make the obvious (in hindsight) connection with that music sheet that was lurking in my folder for so long.

      Thanks so much, Ian! As with many of the songs I love, this melody simply tells me how it longs to be interpreted, whether when I am playing the melody or departing from it for the freedom of creating variations. :-) A Happy New Year to you as well!

    Wow, I'm really amazed by your way of playing. Many thanks for sharing your music. Did you ever think of making tutorials how to play in your style? It sounds a bit like playing the harp, so smooth and soft.

      You're welcome, Irish Bouzouki, and thank YOU! :-) I actually do have several skill tutorials and song tutorials included on the instructional DVD in my book and DVD set "Mountain Dulcimer Wildflowers." I also plan to begin releasing more tutorials very soon at my website: www.JessicaComeauDulcimer.com
      When I do, it will be announced on my Pensacola Mountain Dulcimer Wildflowers page on Facebook: facebook.com/wildflowersJessicaComeau
