Damn I was looking up a hammered dulcimer and accidentally stumbled on this. Never even heard of a mountain dulcimer but this is a solid introduction to it :)
Thank you for posting this. I've played guitar for years and my wife has dabbled in the lap dulcimer. I've been thinking of learning to play as something we could do together and this is really inspiring. I'm learning just how versatile this instrument can be!
Wow, kickass! Masterful. Was looking up how to string my Mom's dulcimer and found this cool vid. She met Axl randomly at a pool bar once and he was the coolest guy.
@@jeffhames1907 Hi Jeff. My name is Tuesday. I'm from Sheffield, England. The instrument isn't big over here and learning material is scarce. If you do have any slowed down vids of anything I'd love to learn some stuff. I'm learning folk with Jessica Comeau's teach yourself books, they're ace, I imported them, but I'm looking forward to learning more rock stuff. I appreciate you're a natural and don't tab. I got my Dulcimer in a charity shop last year, it was broken and I had it fixed and now it sounds gorgeous, just wanting to do the instrument justice and play some tunes on it. I love your channel, thanks for sharing vids. If you ever do a course I'll pay :) . Hope you're well.
@@jeffhames1907 No. Thank you. I was raised in music and I recently came across a handmade Appalachian style dulcimer that I did not know existed. My uncle hasd bought it over 40 years ago for my mother and well, life happens. I grew up playing the drums and several years ago I began learning banjo and guitar, but it just didn't feel right. I built a rather amazing 4 string box style guitar, but even then it didn't suit the sound I wanted. Hearing you and a few others play has sparked a new interest. I do not believe in coincidence. Lol. For some reason several things have just clicked into place.
Mind blown. After listening to this performance, I went straight to my closet, pulled out my neglected dulcimer, and started strumming for the first time in years. You reveal new dimensions of this beautiful instrument. Thank you.
I just had to come back and hear this again. It's so refreshing to hear a modern pop song and not some 200 year old irish tune played on the dulcimer. I didn't know it was capable of being played this way.
I think it is because of the Irish-sounding tonality of the instrument, that is why people play so many Irish and Scottish folk tunes on the instrument....the guy un this video did an excellent performance, though...
My goodness, this is a real breath of fresh air from all the, admittedly beautiful, renditions of Amazing Grace which are like the first 100 search results for mountain dulcimer. Getting mine two days from now but I think I might wanna start with something easier than this. Impressive and creative, well done!
I just inherited a Mountain Dulcimer from my Grandmother. I type "How to play a Dulcimer" and here this video pops up. I'm more than motivated to play this instrument now. Well done!
How coincidental! I was also given my dulcimer by my grandmother. Originally bought by my grandfather some 30 years ago, I believe his dementia was part of the reason he never learned it. Now that he has passed, it has been given to me. Because he never learned to play it, I play it in his stead, heh.
If you live in the Cincinnati area you can join our group. We teach the dulcimer to everyone for free. We have a building and have a good group. No commitment, just come and play when you want.
I just taught myself a few basics on the mountain dulcimer recently..And I thought I was good. Not! After hearing this guy I realize how much I suck! But then again, I've only been playing it for two weeks, whereas I've been playing the guitar for over 40 years..
Yayy great job! I just made a crystal trade for a super nice looking dulcimer I've never heard of these before, I'm in California but this is a pretty amazing demonstration thanks man
As a Bears fan, watching this after the Falcons just beat the Packers makes me happy for that reason. But, it makes me happy too cause it's amazing. You're a master of that instrument. I'd ask to jam but I assume you're around Atlanta, so I guess will just enjoy from afar. Also, I don't know if I'd be worthy after seeing this. 🙌
Mine is a McSpadden with a Baggs pick up in it. They make great dulcimers, although you will need to run a preamp for the pickup. If ya don’t want to run a preamp, then check out Folkcraft. They use a Fishman Prefix Pro pickup.
Stunning! would love to hear more iconic metal / rock songs. I bet you'd do a brilliant Message in a bottle (police) or maybe even something heavier like enter sandman (metalica). Keep it up and ROCK ON! \m/
For real I saw some shown with him and Myles Kennedy. Slash played so many off notes it was cringe worthy. I have been struggling with guitar and switched to bass but I'm ripping frets off gonna convert. Needed diatonic all my life the illogic of guitar confused me me my whole life keep preaching and converting
Awesome! I just bought a mountain dulcimer on a online auction for $19. Can't wait to get it. Going to be a looooong time before I can play like you. Bravo!
Historically, I think no "proper way" has been established for the mountain dulcimer. Being an American folk instrument that developed many playing styles while out in the woods and down in the hollers, and then in recent years discovered by accomplished musicians (like this one), there is now a wide range of its music, all of them proper. This player is certainly in his element!
That may very easily be the most impressive dulcimer playing I've ever seen.
That is, simply, one of the most astounding performances I've ever seen on any instrument.
@James David Walley thank you & glad you enjoyed the arrangement.

Can you give out a TAB please? I want to learn this for my dad
Your amazing!
You should millions of views!
I’m going to do my part and share this with all of my friends.
Thank you 🙏
lovely video
great arrangement !
Thank you.
This is my inspiration to get better at the dual simmer! I am still in the beginner book and just barely getting past strumming and picking
That’s awesome to hear! Keep it up & you’ll be playing this song in no time!
@@jeffhames1907 We'll do! Your videos are very motivating

🤩🤩🤩 Absolutely AMAZING!!!!
Bernadette Polley, Thank you

the best video! Good Man! congratulations from Brazil!
May I steal this (if I can learn it)? An amazing example of doing more with less (strings)! Love this performance!
More than welcome to do so. Thank you for the complement & glad you enjoyed the arrangement.
Any questions or if ya’d like to me to slow it down in a video, just let me know.

Sorry for my rather hasty and barely coherent response. Lol. I was out raking the yard after a nasty storm.

DO Seether songs :D
What tuning is it in and what are the chords?
DAD tuning & chords are D, C, G with one A thrown in.

i am a violinist. this amazing performance has inspired me to start playing dulcimer. just stunning talent.
My Half-Elf Bard will play this. I eagerly anticipate the excited looks from my players as they notice it's familiar tune. Well played.
Found this looking for examples of mountain dulcimer because my Aasimar bard plays one, too. Definitely a great rendition.
Different game system but I too have an elf that plays the dulcimer and I've used this vid for that too (alos how i stumbled on the vid)
There's no end to the versatility of the Mountain Dulcimer! Great job!!
Amazing how much music you can get from a simple diatonic instrument with 3 strings! 🎶🎵🎶 You slayed it!!!
Thank you
Chunkin on a mountain dulcimer…. You opened up a whole new world for me!
I wish you'd put this version on Spotify I'd love for this to pop up on my Playlist, please please!!
Fantastic performance, sir! Great fingering and I love the flourishes and the rhythm!
Jeff, I just stumbled onto this video falling down a dulcimer rabbit hole on youtube. This is absolutely incredible - well done.

Mind posting a tutorial or the tab somewhere? I've been looking for stuff other than just folk music to play on my Dulcimer
Hi did you ever find any good tab places for alternative stuff? Please share the address if so xx

Got me going with raisin toast great morning song thanks bro 😅
Hey Jeff I keep coming back to this video and I'm curious, do you know where I can purchase a solid dulcimer that can be amplified??
Mine is a McSpadden with a Baggs pick up in it. They make great dulcimers, although you will need to run a preamp for the pickup. If ya don’t want to run a preamp, then check out Folkcraft. They use a Fishman Prefix Pro pickup.
Can I get the Tablature for this?
There is no tab at the moment.

Sweet sausages that’s mental

Good music.
Haven’t played mine in so long.. inspiring me to get back into it. You are phenomenal!!
Outstanding. Loved it. You have expanded my understanding of what the mountain dulcimer can do!
You sir are officially “Bardy like a Rock Star”
So good! I want to buy one to learn to play but have zero experience with instruments.
🤯 I have never seen someone absolutely mxxder a dulcimer before.
Thank you glad you enjoyed.
Duclimer. Darn auto correct
I love the artistry of this. Very inspiring autodidactism going on here, my friend. Keep rocking that mountain dulcimer!
Love this so much! 😍
Dang man , you are Good as all get out!

The dedication and blind commitment! Refering to the Falcons shirt more to the instrumental skill, as a fellow instrumentalist and Georgian...
This is great! What tuning was the dulcimer in?

Thank you & yes, DAD
That was awesome. I've never seen a dulcimer being played properly until now! Such a beautiful sound.

This is amazing - thank you for sharing! Do you teach yourself modern music or do you have a quality go-to for sheet music?
Thank you so much. Glad you enjoyed it. I mostly teach myself the instrument & the more modern tunes. Never relied on tab or sheet music.
AWESOME!
Holy $#@!, that was absolutely amazing. I've never heard anyone play dulcimer like you! Amazing!
