Loved the game from the start myself, part of why I brought a GameCube, but~ it was this crazy strange experiment even by Nintendo standards for the longest time.
I mean... Super Monkey Ball, Sonic Adventure 2, Crazy Taxi, Extreme G 3, and Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 3 were either already well-established franchises, or were the beginning of a now established franchise. Crazy Taxi would go on to have 2 sequels from the time, a few mobile games, and most recently a new Crazy Taxi game in the works, revealed last December. Super Monkey Ball has of course gotten multiple games, usually one per console, even if some have been pretty bad leading up to the recent releases of both Banana Mania and Banana Rumble, it's still a fully-fledged franchise. Extreme G 3 and Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 3, well, were the third entries in both franchises. Sonic, I don't even have to explain that one, you know what Sonic is, clearly that had existed long before Adventure 2, and has continued to exist long after.
the gamecube definitely didn't have a great library overall - some standouts but not a deep library. This is why I'm worried for the Switch 2. I just don't know what they're going to have ready to go

Wow! I learned something new today: Being from Argentina, of course Football soccer (or FÚTBOL) is crazy popular here, so every kid that had a PS1 or PS2 had a Winning Eleven game (official or not). Since those games were all in japanese, I thought that the localized version of them were the International Superstar Soccer games, which later become Pro Evolution Soccer. But NO! No need to called it Football Soccer, football should have been the default name because it is literally use your foot to control the ball all the time lol ... US are so weird, they called a game about holding a ball all the time to the enemy base while kicking it once in a while as FootBall. If they refer the name football to the act of kicking the ball with foot, it should have been more appropriate called as kickball... it just doesnt make sense at all
Didn’t even knew that, here in Brazil Pro Evolution Soccer was the most popular, because there was a mod called Bomba Patch, and this mod/patch added our regional tournaments and players. Great times!
The problem is that Konami bought the ip and was going to make 5 but then canceled it. That was back in 2010 or so. Yeah, we never getting another one and we almost at 15 years since then.
The nostalgia I have for that purple box is unreal. Can't believe after all these years the shear sense of joy I get from just seeing a picture of it and I only really played RE4 and Star Wars on it 😂

Seein' the SEGA logo pop up when bootin' up SA2B for the first time the day I got me launch Strayan Cube was was more incredible than words can express haha.
I consider SA2B a superior port because of Chao functionality. The Dreamcast version relied on the online service to buy things for your Chao but it's shut down. They future-proofed it starting with the GC port. Plus, all of those interruption in dialogue and bad music mixing are funny. "You're not even good enough to be my fa-" "I'LL MAKE YOU EAT THOSE WORDS!"
CART was an old IndyCar league/championship that was run and sanctioned by the teams in it. There was a big split between the owner of the Indy 500 and the CART league in the mid 90s leading to two series, IndyCar and CART so there were two completely separate IndyCar series at once. Everyone called them Indy Cars, but a lot of games and media made sure to specify if it was Indy Car (the series run by the Indy 500 owner) and CART. I believe CART could not officially advertise themselves as Indy Car, despite having long done so before the split, but for a while they had by far the most experienced and famous drivers in American open wheel racing. But CART eventually collapsed and all the teams merged back into IndyCar by 2008, so a lot of the media for them just feels really confusing or dated. you’ll have an IndyCar movie or game without the Indy 500, the biggest race in the world. But now you hardly even get that unless it’s a crossover with Forza or another existing racing game because how expensive games are and the series not being as strong as it was in the 90s.
Rogue Squadron 3 was definitely pretty disappointing, but I'll never forget the mission where you play as Wedge who's A-wing goes down over Geonosis and it awakens a bunch of sleeping Battle Droids and you have to fight your way to an abandoned Episode II Jedi Starfighter to escape. It was the coolest thing I'd ever seen in a Star Wars game because it was a classic era Star Wars character interacting with elements from the prequels and it was the first time I'd ever seen something like that outside of unlockable non-canon characters and such.
It was those janky on-foot levels that ruined it. If they took those out and spent the time adding more space/air based levels it would have been as awesome as II was, and II is still my favourite Star Wars game of all time.

For years I thought mario cart double dash was a launch title because that was my first gamecube game in a bundle. And what a glorious launch title it was.
I don't know if it was on GC, but I'll always remember Dave Mirra's BMX being the game I came home to play when my Brooklyn middleschool evacuated in the wake of 9/11. I wasn't ignorant to the gravity of the day, but God help you if you're gonna stop my 12 year old ass from gaming on a school day.

Quick correction at 35:59 -- The game Universal Studios Theme Parks Adventure is a look at Universal Studios Hollywood, not Japan, though there is a second game called Welcome to Universal Studios Japan (published by Konami for the PS2) that is a very similar game but is a walkthrough/collection-of-mini-games centered specifically around Universal Studios Japan.
My best friend at the time rented NHL Hitz 2002 on a whim and brought it over. We instantly loved the game. We both loved it so much that we went in and put our money together, walked over to our local mall and bought the game. We shared the copy between each other for a few years before my friend decided he didnt want to own any old games anymore and wanted to trade the game. I said nah, i still want it. haha I still have it too. NHL Hitz 2002 is a blast and i still highly recommend it to people if they can.
41:04 the Game Boy Color game as the same name as the home console game, but the GBC game is actually a sequel to Deep Duck Trouble on the Game Gear and Master System. It's a very good platformer, improves upon the first game in many ways, and has a nice double jump. Also, the graphics are really great for an 8-bit Game Boy Color game, it's just an all around good game

Luigi’s Mansion is still my favorite launch title for Gamecube. It’s still the one I go back to the most. One of the best consoles ever despite it’s lacking sales. I’m thankful I grew up with that cute Nintendo lunchbox. ✌🏼
Despite growing up with the GameCube, I don't worship the console like everyone else my age does. Even if Super Mario Sunshine & a realistic Zelda were launch games, I don't see anything really saving the GameCube from last place. That said, I'll stand by Double Dash supremacy forever.
I didn't grow up with any of them, I grew up with the following generation. Currently I only own a PS2 and a Dreamcast in my collection, but from my experiences with the 6th generation, I'd say I'd put the GameCube even lower than the Dreamcast or original Xbox. I don't despise the console, but not liking The Legend of Zelda or Fire Emblem, I always thought the library was lacklustre, the lack of a solid Mario platformer, and the lack of exclusive third party games didn't do anything to help it push boundaries. The console itself was pretty hideous in my opinion, literally a cube with a handle which was so stupid, and the fact it used mini-discs instead of regular discs defeated the whole point of using discs at all.
Yeah, same. Like, sure. It's respectable in hindsight, being the most graphically powerful and having Nintendo backed games. But some of those Nintendo games were seen as iffy back then and still are now (even if nostalgia has made them popular), but it's not nearly as good as the PS2's overwhelmingly large library, nor was it aiming at the then-mostly-ignored western audience like the Xbox.
I was 20 and owned all 4 consoles at the time. GameCube is pretty over rated now in my opinion. I enjoyed it at the time but if it were my only system I would have been pretty disappointed. Dreamcast, Xbox, GameCube, ps2 imo.
I remember getting my GameCube day 1 with Luigi's Mansion, and renting Wave Race and Super Monkey Ball. Spent most of the rental time with Wave Race, since I also had some inflatable GameCube chair (preorder bonus?) and leaning back and forth on that made it really feel like you were on a jetski.
Out of all these launch titles, I grew up with Luigi's Mansion, Super Monkey Ball, and the SA2B trailer on Sonic Mega Collection. I also played a Burnout on PS2 growing up, but I couldn't tell you for the life of me if it was 1, 3, or both.
I have never been a Nintendo person and despite my family always having play stations the GameCube was MY first console when I was 8. Resident evil, sonic adventure 2, ultimate spider-man, man good times! Going Quackers was the first game I ever completed by myself all the way through!
Of these launch titles, I had Wave Race: Blue Storm, FIFA Soccer 2002 and Sonic Adventure 2 Battle. Both were amazing, and still some of my favourites. Blue Storm had amazing weather and wave effects.
I still remember my aunt in a Blockbuster, saying she would either get me a Gamecube, or 3 GBA games. Turns out I'm bad at math, cause I took the 3 games.

It's wild to hear someone bring up Tarzan Untamed. It was one of the few games my parents got me for the GCN and I definitely did not enjoy it nearly as much as my parents thought they would 😬
when I was a kid, I got batman vengeance and I couldn't get past like the third level, but boy did I play it alot. Now it houses both my original copy, and my Simpson's hit and run disc
I was really impressed with the GameCube! I was one of those GC fans who found himself getting asked 'Why did you get one of those little kid systems when you shoulda got a PS3 or an Xbox 360?' I wasn't that impressed with the PlayStation and Xbox series of consoles just cranking out systems that were pretty much the same only with a better processor and graphics card. I found Nintendo's lineup of consoles more interesting with how different and innovative the consoles were. I kinda wish I had kept it when I bought my Wii. I no longer 'trade in' consoles when I buy a new one, but I used to do that almost every time once it became a thing. I did keep my GBA and DS though. I'm still glad I did as I often play them even today. It amazes me that the GC and some its games have become expensive collectibles now. When I sold them, I think I got just enough to get a discount on the Wii and something like three games with the proceeds. Weird, but not in a bad way.....that sums up Nintendo pretty much. I love how quirky they are. It's great that Sega and Nintendo patched things up, got over the console wars and made some great games together. Getting Sega games on Nintendo consoles was a really smart move. Super Monkey Ball for Game Cube is a good example of that. There was also later a very impressive version if it for the Wii in which you controlled the ball by tilting the controller. Genius! Burnout 2!!! It is my favorite racing game. When I play racing games, the main thing I do is crash, so why not play a racing game that rewards you for crashing? Brilliant! Here's a funny thing, I helped a friend's kid, who I was tutoring, learn a bit about how to drive before his dad allowed him to touch his car. We'd play Burnout 2 with a steering wheel and pedals and talk about what Nevada laws we were breaking, what the damage would cost to fix in today's world, what sorts of injuries you'd sustain from the wrecks, etc. It was fun, but it did help me get my point across about the importance of driving safely. Cell Shading! It looks fantastic! The GC was pretty good at rendering it as well. Looked so much better than the blocky polygonal attempts at photorealism that were around back in the day. One of the best examples of it was Legend of Zelda Wind Waker. Batman Vengeance certainly looked cool. It did a good job of capturing the wonderful animated series. I enjoyed playing it coop with my wife who is almost as much of a comic book and game nerd as I am. Star Wars Rogue Leader is excellent! Even better than the N64 version. That game and the GC Metroid games proved that this little box could actually do. Too bad that they didn't release more games as good as these two. This video was fun to watch. Thanks!
ESPN Winter Sports 2002 as a series goes all the way back to the NES with Konami's "Track & Field." It makes more sense as a minigame collection than a sports game.
Extreme G is still the fastest game I have ever played on even to this day, that going through the sound barrier 😍this series needs to be revived definitely my favourite racing game of all time without a shadow of a doubt.

Man, Super Mario Sunshine really didn't drop as a launch game ANYWHERE, huh? I had actually forgotten about that... Gamecube was a somewhat sad thing for me as it was the console where I actually skipped Nintendo for the allure of Sony. It was the included DVD, I tell ya- made my parents really favor that one. Also, oddly enough- Devil May Cry. I had read about that game and become OBSESSED with it for some reason, and as Christmas time came rolling around and I could make a wish for a console I wanted the one that could play Devil May Cry. Dante just has that aura, what else can be said?
The first game I owned for the GC was Mario Party 7 'cause it was bundled with mine...but the first game I ended up playing on it was that Ed, Edd, n Eddy Mis-Edventures game. Those sure were simpler times lol.
I remember seeing RE remake in magazines at the time and wow. Rouge squadron is still a looker and probably the best looking game that generation, the water in Sunshine still looks awesome. Really enjoyed the GC overall graphical presentation, it’s too bad Halo was on Xbox lol
@@alexandrebelair4360 yes, on paper the the Xbox is more powerful, but the ATI “flipper” graphics chip was a bit more advanced than the Nvidia one in the Xbox. Both were no slouches at the time. I just prefer the Gc output, always looked “cleaner” to me

41:04 the Game Boy Color game as the same name as the home console game, but the GBC game is actually a sequel to Deep Duck Trouble on the Game Gear and Master System. It's a very good platformer, improves upon the first game in many ways, and has a nice double jump. Also, the graphics are really great for an 8-bit Game Boy Color game, it's just an all around good game

Luigi’s Mansion is still my favorite launch title for Gamecube. It’s still the one I go back to the most. One of the best consoles ever despite it’s lacking sales. I’m thankful I grew up with that cute Nintendo lunchbox. ✌🏼
Despite growing up with the GameCube, I don't worship the console like everyone else my age does. Even if Super Mario Sunshine & a realistic Zelda were launch games, I don't see anything really saving the GameCube from last place. That said, I'll stand by Double Dash supremacy forever.
I didn't grow up with any of them, I grew up with the following generation. Currently I only own a PS2 and a Dreamcast in my collection, but from my experiences with the 6th generation, I'd say I'd put the GameCube even lower than the Dreamcast or original Xbox. I don't despise the console, but not liking The Legend of Zelda or Fire Emblem, I always thought the library was lacklustre, the lack of a solid Mario platformer, and the lack of exclusive third party games didn't do anything to help it push boundaries. The console itself was pretty hideous in my opinion, literally a cube with a handle which was so stupid, and the fact it used mini-discs instead of regular discs defeated the whole point of using discs at all.
Yeah, same. Like, sure. It's respectable in hindsight, being the most graphically powerful and having Nintendo backed games. But some of those Nintendo games were seen as iffy back then and still are now (even if nostalgia has made them popular), but it's not nearly as good as the PS2's overwhelmingly large library, nor was it aiming at the then-mostly-ignored western audience like the Xbox.
n64 > dreamcast > psx > gamecube
I was 20 and owned all 4 consoles at the time. GameCube is pretty over rated now in my opinion. I enjoyed it at the time but if it were my only system I would have been pretty disappointed. Dreamcast, Xbox, GameCube, ps2 imo.

I remember getting my GameCube day 1 with Luigi's Mansion, and renting Wave Race and Super Monkey Ball. Spent most of the rental time with Wave Race, since I also had some inflatable GameCube chair (preorder bonus?) and leaning back and forth on that made it really feel like you were on a jetski.
Out of all these launch titles, I grew up with Luigi's Mansion, Super Monkey Ball, and the SA2B trailer on Sonic Mega Collection. I also played a Burnout on PS2 growing up, but I couldn't tell you for the life of me if it was 1, 3, or both.
Wave Race's water was the gold standard for years!! No one could beat that for so long

Of these launch titles, I had Wave Race: Blue Storm, FIFA Soccer 2002 and Sonic Adventure 2 Battle. Both were amazing, and still some of my favourites. Blue Storm had amazing weather and wave effects.
I still remember my aunt in a Blockbuster, saying she would either get me a Gamecube, or 3 GBA games. Turns out I'm bad at math, cause I took the 3 games.

I was really impressed with the GameCube! I was one of those GC fans who found himself getting asked 'Why did you get one of those little kid systems when you shoulda got a PS3 or an Xbox 360?' I wasn't that impressed with the PlayStation and Xbox series of consoles just cranking out systems that were pretty much the same only with a better processor and graphics card. I found Nintendo's lineup of consoles more interesting with how different and innovative the consoles were. I kinda wish I had kept it when I bought my Wii. I no longer 'trade in' consoles when I buy a new one, but I used to do that almost every time once it became a thing. I did keep my GBA and DS though. I'm still glad I did as I often play them even today. It amazes me that the GC and some its games have become expensive collectibles now. When I sold them, I think I got just enough to get a discount on the Wii and something like three games with the proceeds.
Weird, but not in a bad way.....that sums up Nintendo pretty much. I love how quirky they are.
It's great that Sega and Nintendo patched things up, got over the console wars and made some great games together. Getting Sega games on Nintendo consoles was a really smart move. Super Monkey Ball for Game Cube is a good example of that. There was also later a very impressive version if it for the Wii in which you controlled the ball by tilting the controller. Genius!
Burnout 2!!! It is my favorite racing game. When I play racing games, the main thing I do is crash, so why not play a racing game that rewards you for crashing? Brilliant! Here's a funny thing, I helped a friend's kid, who I was tutoring, learn a bit about how to drive before his dad allowed him to touch his car. We'd play Burnout 2 with a steering wheel and pedals and talk about what Nevada laws we were breaking, what the damage would cost to fix in today's world, what sorts of injuries you'd sustain from the wrecks, etc. It was fun, but it did help me get my point across about the importance of driving safely.
Cell Shading! It looks fantastic! The GC was pretty good at rendering it as well. Looked so much better than the blocky polygonal attempts at photorealism that were around back in the day. One of the best examples of it was Legend of Zelda Wind Waker.
Batman Vengeance certainly looked cool. It did a good job of capturing the wonderful animated series. I enjoyed playing it coop with my wife who is almost as much of a comic book and game nerd as I am. Star Wars Rogue Leader is excellent! Even better than the N64 version. That game and the GC Metroid games proved that this little box could actually do. Too bad that they didn't release more games as good as these two.

ESPN Winter Sports 2002 as a series goes all the way back to the NES with Konami's "Track & Field." It makes more sense as a minigame collection than a sports game.
Extreme G is still the fastest game I have ever played on even to this day, that going through the sound barrier 😍this series needs to be revived definitely my favourite racing game of all time without a shadow of a doubt.

Gamecube was a somewhat sad thing for me as it was the console where I actually skipped Nintendo for the allure of Sony. It was the included DVD, I tell ya- made my parents really favor that one. Also, oddly enough- Devil May Cry. I had read about that game and become OBSESSED with it for some reason, and as Christmas time came rolling around and I could make a wish for a console I wanted the one that could play Devil May Cry. Dante just has that aura, what else can be said?

The first game I owned for the GC was Mario Party 7 'cause it was bundled with mine...but the first game I ended up playing on it was that Ed, Edd, n Eddy Mis-Edventures game. Those sure were simpler times lol.

I remember seeing RE remake in magazines at the time and wow. Rouge squadron is still a looker and probably the best looking game that generation, the water in Sunshine still looks awesome. Really enjoyed the GC overall graphical presentation, it’s too bad Halo was on Xbox lol
Rogue scadron looked good but any high budget xbox game looked as good or better. Still a beautiful game but the xbox was just way more powerful.
@@alexandrebelair4360 yes, on paper the the Xbox is more powerful, but the ATI “flipper” graphics chip was a bit more advanced than the Nvidia one in the Xbox. Both were no slouches at the time. I just prefer the Gc output, always looked “cleaner” to me
