Michaels swinging that chair and hitting Taker led directly to the formation of DX, the first Hell in a Cell match where Kane debuted, and the Montreal Screwjob. All in the following three months. Solid work.
hahaha, the dead crowd thing is funny because it's exactly how I felt at this year's WrestleMania. Spent Saturday night boozing it up at Beyond and CZW and then was hung over in the hot, humid Florida sun all day Sunday. If the Hardy's didn't come back I probably would have been asleep around then.
Was at the show and yeah the tailgate was awesome. The WWF also had a big fan section up outside that had the old Undertaker giant inflatable along with games and merch tent. Was in the first row of the upper level. Even from there you could see Austin's head sticking out from Owen's legs as he did the tombstone. Knew it was a huge botch right away.
That blue cage always looked legitimately unpleasant to work in. I mean getting smashed with a chain link door isn't a picnic but that blue cage looks very heavy to take a bump with. At least the walls of the chain cages give a little when you bump against them (even if sliding down the walls probably tears up your skin).
I was at the show. And while I didn't partake yes I do recall quite a bit of tailgaiting. Much more than I expected for a wrestling show. There was a contingent of Los Baricuas fans in my section and I got a kick out of them celebrating when they won as seemingly no one else in the building carried. And Austin hurting his neck was just plain bizarre because it was obvious something wasn't quite right but hard to tell from a distance what it was.
"When Hulk Hogan reached his fifth time, it was head-turning as no-one had even won three championships before that time." - If Hogan had won five, then surely he had reached three (and four) before that time?
Christopher Fouche This was before Plumpy even started watching wrestling, so give him a pass...along with a stare-down since he only started watching wrestling a bit after this.
Haven't seen this yet but fun fact this Summerslam was 20 years ago to the day. I also recall entering that contest where u choose a key. My phone rang while taking a big wwe & I never answered. Hopefully it wasn't me they called.
So after you're done with Summerslam, why not do In Your House? That used to be WWF's monthly PPV before they switched up to having unique names for each monthly PPV!
Wow, I live in New Jersey and didn't know that fact about Whitman. As someone who knows nothing about politics she is now instantly my favorite governor ever
I can honestly say I was there, and bought an Austin 3:16 shirt that I still have to this day albeit faded. I remember a few of us were waiting for Kane to show up. lol
The thing that stood out after Stone Cold and the Owen Hart pile driver was that Austin and Owen was never put in a storyline again with Owen Hart after all that happened
Not true, Austin would interfere in all of Owen's Intercontinental title matches against other WWF Superstars, ensuring that Owen wouldn't lose the title to any of them, and then Austin defeated Owen for the Intercontinental Title at Survivor Series 1997.
in mood to watch an old summerslam on wwe network. i've seen the entire summerslams of 2000-2007, & 2014-2016. i want to watch one I haven't seen. any recommendations? :)
I mean I would feel pretty bad too, and unable to call the person and apologize. What do you say "sorry I that I got to cocky and broke their neck, put their career and life in sever danger". Just feel like a sorry and get well soon card would not do the trick.
$202,500 on a 20,000 crowd is nothing. I used to be in charge of merchandise for concert/family shows at a major arena and we would do that on house shows. I want to say that our best night was a Raw where we did $13 per cap. Unless the $202,500 was the number that the WWF did, after the building took their 25% - 30%. Then I completely retract my statement. As that would be around $290,000 on a 20,000 crowd which would be about a $14.50 per cap. Which is good.
As noted in previous episodes, Austin's neck was already at "you need to consider retiring" injury levals BEFORE the tombstone botch, sadly Austin's carear was always going to be too short
No one at whatculture actually watched these summerslam's because they were all pokemon card playin' kids at the time. You can't judge a show held 20 years ago and put your modern ideals on it. Everyone loved it at the time, some were disappointed but most people didn't give a shit either way because they had a laugh watching it.
I think Simon is the only one whom watched during the New Generation, and most of the Attitude era? You're right about the others though. Hence why I can't stand listening to Jack the Nobber prattle on about anything pre Ruthless Aggression era!
this has nothing to do with the video but I never really watch GFW or TNA or Impact or whatever but I am starting to really like the the current LAX's run they are so entertaining.
I dont know why people make a bigger deal about how many times someone won a title rather than how may days they kept it or how many times the defended it. Winning the title 5 times also means you lost it 4 times...
This venue is cursed!! Stone cold has had two severe injuries that resulted from something breaking and both times happened in this building. First in 1997 and the other in 2001.
Austin broke Masa Chono's neck whilst doing the exact same tombstone piledriver move that Owen used to break Austin's neck.......karma can be a very nasty thing!!!!!!...why did'nt anyone moan about Austin breaking Chono's neck?
Fun fact* As a child I though mick foley was a crackhead and all his spots were fake, because I thought their is no way someone can take that much pain. Then I grew up and realized it was all real and foley barley ever needed anything for the pain, yes, foley is God.
Remember when Pillman wore a dress on Raw ever day for a month afterward, but then beat Goldust at the September In Your House and Marlena became his slave? Yeah... 1997.
Noah Lerum he's not been a fan long enough to have a realistic opinion over a 25 year period, Adam pacitti is one of the only guys with the knowledge to even attempt such a list at whatculture since Kenny has left and James doesn't do lists
The fact that the 6 guys mentioned have held the title more than Bret but guys like Piper never held it once is bullshit. Nobody should be a world champion more than 5 times.
Michaels swinging that chair and hitting Taker led directly to the formation of DX, the first Hell in a Cell match where Kane debuted, and the Montreal Screwjob. All in the following three months. Solid work.
WWF/WWE owes a lot of its success to Foley, the man gave everything, always risked his well being
So the Nation of Domination replaced one Johnson with another Johnson
11: It was Todd Pettengill's last appearance on WWE TV. He would be replaced by Michael Cole. This was the last event in a pre-Michael Cole WWE
Matt Never knew that's who he replaced. Fitting I suppose since they're both annoying
Owen 3:16 says "I JUST BROKE YOUR NECK"
McMahon 3:16 says "I just broke your harness system"
Tasteless
It was a storyline at the time.
Savage
Blue Blazer 3:16 says I just fell to my death
Every graphic used to depict fact #8 was spot on and HILARIOUS! Good job, Mr. editor.
I was there. Remember it like it was yesterday. Sent chills down your spine when the UnderTaker made his entrance.
"Foley tried to kill himself!!!!"
*MICK FOLEY EATS DEATH*
Titæn 2005 for breakfast
Without any milk.
"which gave him...a concussion!" i laughed way harder than i should have
LegendaryZack me too and ‘nearly fucking killed himself’ while smiling away
I have been anticipating this review for ever now. SS97' was the best summer slam ever. Good times.
hahaha, the dead crowd thing is funny because it's exactly how I felt at this year's WrestleMania. Spent Saturday night boozing it up at Beyond and CZW and then was hung over in the hot, humid Florida sun all day Sunday. If the Hardy's didn't come back I probably would have been asleep around then.
Wow, Ahmed Johnson must be the black Kevin Nash.
Austin 3:16 merch was selling like a God Church
kedar deodhar New England is my city
Papa bless
fuck you jake pauler
kedar deodhar Austin got merch selling like a god church
Austin should've stunned Jesus off his cross, but Christ would've kicked out on the third day
Today it's exactly 20 years from that summerslam
Bret Hart vs. Taker was awesome! Even Owen vs. Austin was great until that finish...
I laughed my ass off when that Tye Dillinger graphic came up. So thank you.

Not gonna lie, I love this song you're using to promote the world cup. It's so chill.
owen obviously changed how he did the piledriver probably due to the undertaker's growing popularity. dropping to the knees is how taker does his.
I would love to see Owen Hart in the wwe hall of fame, sadly that will probably never happen....
Anderson scott Owen who?
"When Hulk Hogan reached his fifth time, it was head-turning as no-one had even won three championships before that time." - If Hogan had won five, then surely he had reached three (and four) before that time?
Henry Higgins Other wrestlers..
I'm just being pedantic because that's not what Plumpy said.
@@henryhigginsiii6427 nothing wrong with being pedantic
If I was in Owens position I would have been too terrified to apologise to Austin. So I get why he didn't but it was the right thing to do.
Steven Campbell i would be too
Hit man vs taker was an absolute classic, great PPV
Welcome back to the Adam show- 90% of What culture fans hear on the intro
Summerslams 2015-17 where supposed to take place in New Jersey rather than Brooklyn but the izod center was demolished so the venue was changed
The editor also broke Austin's right arm at 4:43
Worth mentioning I think that Austin was one of the few, if only one, that wasn't wearing an OH armband on Owen's tribute show
TheDragonEpyon he was a bit bitter due to the botched piledriver. Personally I think Austin regretted burying the hatchet with Owen before his passing
I don't blame him for being bitter, it was a botch no denying that. He was respectful during the show, that's all you could really ask for.
More of these please WHAT CULTURE they're great
Wait, say "boricuas" again?
Christopher Fouche glad I'm not the only one
Christopher Fouche This was before Plumpy even started watching wrestling, so give him a pass...along with a stare-down since he only started watching wrestling a bit after this.
Have him say "los", too!
That's shit killed me
It took me a solid 15 seconds to realize what he meant.
Adam. I been thinking you're saying "I'm blumpy". Not "im Blampied" lol makes so much more sense
Haven't seen this yet but fun fact this Summerslam was 20 years ago to the day. I also recall entering that contest where u choose a key. My phone rang while taking a big wwe & I never answered. Hopefully it wasn't me they called.
Fact:I was there.
Lilah Suicyde Fact: you are lucky
Was it any better live or no?
I was there for Raw the next night in Bethlehem, Pa!
brian pillman was an official member of the hart foundation.
I love you work ❤️
Keep it up #whatculture
I lost it when I saw 'Taxes are worse than the Miz' =D
Surprised today's been exactly 20 years since that PPV happened.
Nice vid Adam
I want Plumpy to talk to me when I'm trying to sleep. His voice is so soothing.
It seems like every time there's a 10 Fascinating Facts including Stone Cold, he gets injured somehow.
Can't wait for them to do Summerslam 2005 !!
So after you're done with Summerslam, why not do In Your House? That used to be WWF's monthly PPV before they switched up to having unique names for each monthly PPV!
dstebbin I think they'll do survivor series then royal rumble then probably in your house.
As I've always known: Bret Hart > Brock Lesner
Wow, I live in New Jersey and didn't know that fact about Whitman. As someone who knows nothing about politics she is now instantly my favorite governor ever
I can honestly say I was there, and bought an Austin 3:16 shirt that I still have to this day albeit faded. I remember a few of us were waiting for Kane to show up. lol
What is the name of that song atbthe end? The pro wrestling world cup preview song
Ahh new Jersey... my home ... my sweet , polluted , corrupt , expensive home .
"Boozing it up..." *Shows decidedly non-alcoholic Dad's Root Beer.*
Nice one, guys.
It was actually 20 years ago to the day that 1997 SummerSlam aired. August 3rd, 1997
Nice
This was 20 years ago today!
This is a very underrated SummerSlam
The thing that stood out after Stone Cold and the Owen Hart pile driver was that Austin and Owen was never put in a storyline again with Owen Hart after all that happened
Not true, Austin would interfere in all of Owen's Intercontinental title matches against other WWF Superstars, ensuring that Owen wouldn't lose the title to any of them, and then Austin defeated Owen for the Intercontinental Title at Survivor Series 1997.
If ahmed johnson did not get injured we would not have gotten the rock
Foley ripped his shirt to reveal a heart ❤️ and he was supposed to be dude love , but the sweat cleared it off hahahahaha
a top 10 list of the best mike talkers pleasee
whatculture please post a link for the twitch stream for WCPPW tomorrow
20 years ago today of this event.
I love these.

More Forget lists plz
Vader vs Sid was supposed to happen on this show
Great list Adam. Yes I called him Adam because that's his name and I'm not calling him anything else.
rebal180 Damn you so ice cold.
in mood to watch an old summerslam on wwe network. i've seen the entire summerslams of 2000-2007, & 2014-2016. i want to watch one I haven't seen. any recommendations? :)
LuchaKing 1992
1995 is best

1:52 Top ten facts about Vladimir!
I mean I would feel pretty bad too, and unable to call the person and apologize. What do you say "sorry I that I got to cocky and broke their neck, put their career and life in sever danger". Just feel like a sorry and get well soon card would not do the trick.

Joe > Roman
Cody Couch this has nothing to do with either you idiot
If not for Austin's infamous broken neck we could of seen matches against John Cena Randy Orton or CM Punk or Roman Reigns
As noted in previous episodes, Austin's neck was already at "you need to consider retiring" injury levals BEFORE the tombstone botch, sadly Austin's carear was always going to be too short
My fav summer slam next
2:20 boozing it up with Dad's Root Beer
Should make a video top 10 most over superstars on the roster
Hey guys your WCPW add after the video could you tone down the volume its blasts out so much louder then the actual content.
I'm going to let you in on a secret, kids love wrestling.
I think Simon is the only one whom watched during the New Generation, and most of the Attitude era? You're right about the others though. Hence why I can't stand listening to Jack the Nobber prattle on about anything pre Ruthless Aggression era!
Jim Lahey mr lahey !!
Are you still the liquor ?
Shit winds Ethan, the shit storm is a coming and only the liquor knows what to do my boy.
Jim Lahey I did both watched wrestling and was into Pokemon lol, I didn't get out of wrestling until around 2002 when I started smoking pot more..
this has nothing to do with the video but I never really watch GFW or TNA or Impact or whatever but I am starting to really like the the current LAX's run they are so entertaining.
Nvm Low-Ki just joined the group are you fucking kidding me?!
When are you guys coming to Louisiana? WCPW?
Jonboy Belton never it's a British promotion
Tristen Frohaug weren't they in Orlando for state of emergency? 0.0
LuchaKing idk I was just trying to low key be a dick
It's not a god damn tombstone, it's an inverted piledriver.
Meadowlands Arena was 1 of the best wwe arena of all time
I dont know why people make a bigger deal about how many times someone won a title rather than how may days they kept it or how many times the defended it. Winning the title 5 times also means you lost it 4 times...
This venue is cursed!! Stone cold has had two severe injuries that resulted from something breaking and both times happened in this building. First in 1997 and the other in 2001.
Well, it is jersey, the garbage state was always cursed
3:16 "are you alright"
Didn't Austin injure his neck before Summerslam 97? but the Owen incident exacerbated the injury
Austin broke Masa Chono's neck whilst doing the exact same tombstone piledriver move that Owen used to break Austin's neck.......karma can be a very nasty thing!!!!!!...why did'nt anyone moan about Austin breaking Chono's neck?
Very True.
Austin was the future of WWE, so his injury was taken much more seriously
WhatCulture showing the Adam Blampied name?? Teasing a name change??
97 was great Shawn was a great heel as well as bret
Wasn't this the last time the blue bar steel cage was used as well?
furiousd36 No it got used a year later at Breakdown: In your house for the triple threat with Mankind, Rock and Shamrock.
You could of mentioned that was the last appearance by hit man in a summerslam
ii DjDro ii nope that would SummerSlam 2010 when he was on Team WWE to go against the Nexus
1000herecomesthepain Lol let's not remind people of that sad sad moment.
Fun fact*
As a child I though mick foley was a crackhead and all his spots were fake, because I thought their is no way someone can take that much pain. Then I grew up and realized it was all real and foley barley ever needed anything for the pain, yes, foley is God.
*WHAT IS THE MUSIC IN THE END????*
Hey I'm from New Jersey
Anyone notice they use that picture of hart at 6:04 alot in this series?
Remember when Pillman wore a dress on Raw ever day for a month afterward, but then beat Goldust at the September In Your House and Marlena became his slave? Yeah... 1997.
Pillman wasn't unofficial! He was a member of the Hart Foundation!
7:30 that fella looks shockingly like Luke Gallows.
Adam should do the best wrestlers of the last 25 years
Noah Lerum he's not been a fan long enough to have a realistic opinion over a 25 year period, Adam pacitti is one of the only guys with the knowledge to even attempt such a list at whatculture since Kenny has left and James doesn't do lists
Let's talk Wrestling or Simon. I think he started watching in like 1990
The fact that the 6 guys mentioned have held the title more than Bret but guys like Piper never held it once is bullshit. Nobody should be a world champion more than 5 times.
Man imagine if WWE went back to an attitude era rating. Its all a fantasy tho. Vince is too stubborn
Summerslam 92 crowd was kinda dead
