Hello, you are a demigod-class teacher! Love the humble respect for the young and curious in the community you are supporting! I'm a musician slowly turning producer, with some technical experience building studios. I'm no longer young and hence mainly interested in making other people sound great. How would you describe what it takes to be a credible producer & engineer when, as in my case, I'd like to focus on "old-school-ecological" style production, where less is more and the quality of the simple would be enough.. to make it work. But then competing against the mainstream stuff is just impossible, even though in the best of worlds - the sound quality would be on par with A. Krauss & R. Plant (which it isn't yet :) I think, there was a question in there somewhere.

I’m 25 years old and am just starting my career as a producer. I studied music production for three years and then got a job in a guitar store (3 years ago). About a year ago (march 2020) I finally managed to make a deal with a couple of musicians who came in to buy strings, that I will be their roadie and things kind of started happening after that. I’ve produced 10 songs in the past year, bought myself a few cool mics and other studio gadgets and am still going to work the store every day. What I’m saying is, you really just have to work on any project you can, when you’re starting out and communicate with as many people as you can to get the right opportunities. you are wrong. Of course it has to do something with luck - more than just a little. This is the funny thing: People who "make" it will rather be comfortable with believing it was due to their efforts or talent (and it HAS to do with effort too) than to attribute it to luck. The reality is, that you need both - and more than that. You need luck, commitment, a fraction (very little) talent, communication-skills and USUALLY you will need to be willing to do something you are not comfortable with as well. It has A LOT to do with luck though. Sure EVERYBODY can eventually get SOME gig eventually.. but wether you connect with people who actually become sucessful and wether they take you with them on their journey and you get to make a name for yourself etc. is all more connected to luck than anything else. I guarantee you there are millions of producers out there that worked 5 times as hard as you and are 10 times as talented but haven't "grown their business" at all due to being unlucky. Maybe because of the area they live in, maybe because they are VERY poor, maybe because they are introverts, maybe because they didn't get a job at a music-store, maybe the musicians coming to the music store simply didn't "connect".. so incredibly many maybes. If you ask me, thinking that this crazy world we live in is JUST and FAIR and you get what you deserve is pretty ignorant. Some of the best get nothing, some of the worst get a lot. That's life! Still glad you made it.. but get humble.. be grateful.. it wasn't all due to your great work-ethic and talent.
How can you get into the scene when you are 60 years old? Music has been my life, and I have always had have always had questions about the production of famous records, Manfred Mann's "The Roaring Silence" is a great example. Excellent song writing and recording, but the eventual product sounds thin and weak. I could fix that, but I doubt that whoever owns the music now would send me any stems......
How about if you're a middle-aged man with a job and family who would like to change career but don't have time to go to college / university. How do you approach such a shift when you have tons of interest but no contacts or experience?
Some people will never get a reply from emails . But if you genuinely have some hands on experience and know the basics you will absolutely eventually get a response or run into someone with an eye open .
One tip is get a mortgage and and buy a couple of condos from the 70's (cheaper than new ones) and rent them out, income to pay off the mortgage and the rest as a steady cash flow while you try and get a career as a producer/engineer ;) Over time the rent goes up but the mortgage stays the same !
This is great but I want to make a comment about the attack of the kick drum. The drummer makes the choice to mute or boom the kick just like if you’re playing it with your hands. If you’re looking for a consistent kick then you shouldn’t be recording it live. ✌️
You’re a very lucky man if you only get to work with Drummers skilled enough to play that way! 99% of drummers have a way they play the lock drum, some lay into it and others let it breath, a handful are skilled enough to choose how to do that.

Unfortunately offering free work does not express the [good] value your work hopefully has. For many people "free" doesn't represent quality or value which makes "free" not desirable. There is a psychology behind that. Back in the cave days a handfull of free mushrooms for example were either enjoyable, let people see god for a week, or just deadly. The expensive mushrooms were picked & pre-chewed by old toothless women. If the women survived, the shrooms were safe. The older the chewy women [stone-old like 28yrs] the more expensive the mushrooms. That's what we call a good "track record" nowadays. If you believe in some of your new artists, offer them a really bad 360 contract and let them fight to get a better deal out of you. That's how the world world-s. Aren't we lucky ; )

I primarily work in the hip hop/Modern Genre. And I was wondering am I over thinking the thought of adding a sidechain compressor between instruments and frequency ranges? A previous CLA interview he has stated he wouldn't do it because their is room for all the instruments already.
When do you low pass? It's funny there seems to be more videos on high passing than low passing. lol I've used low pass on bass DI to get more of the bottom end vs the amp tone (which I learned from you) but otherwise don't seem to use it much. Is there anything besides kick, bass or lower strings that you would low pass?
When I first got to Nashville a few years ago, I mentioned Interns at an AES event and other full time engineers went nuts! Studio guys that have been here forever saying you can't bring in an intern and have him do any sort of work that could be considered free labor, they have to be students, it has to be for learn purposes only... example, I can't have an intern come in a setup a session, or clean up a vocal track... It went on and on... I have no idea what the rules are in TN but I won't even consider interns at this point.

My numpty 'newbie' question is regarding the 5 position pickup selector switch on my electric. I obviously get what it does, and I appreciate that there may not be a definitive answer to this, but when do you tend to use each selection?
I was wondering if anyone was going to catch that! Hahah The 5 way selector really is a matter of taste! Bridge position is the brightest and neck the mellowest, everyone has a favourite sound and each song and part will indicate a different sound that might work! There are no rules! The out of phase sound as position 2 and 4 are often called, is very synonymous with Mark Knopfler

So many great stories again! You mentioned setting up a festival, were you involved with live sound and if so, when did you make the switch to being a full time studio engineer? What did you learn from setting up PAs and mixing live shows?
What I did was first playing in a band on the the road for a while. Then went to live sound for bands. Still not making a living at engineering, but I am still happy.
Hi Andrew, recording or mixing? In the recording process a towel laid against the bester head works great, maybe with a little weight on it. In the mix find the mid range spikey honk and pull it out! Typically the low mids around 250-450hz can be a problem area, but the 'boing' sound is usually somewhere in the 600-800hz area.
You might not hear these ultra low frequencies, but when you don't bypass them your amplifier and speakers still do the work to produce them. These frequencies carry a lot of energy, so it might clip out your system. That's what is meant with headroom I assume.
Hi Hannibal, indeed, I believe Matt was trying to say don't just high pass for the sake of it! I 100% agree with you and have many, many videos making that exact same point!
Also, it is very important to remember he works (as we said in the video) with mainly programmed material which has already been very heavily eq'd etc, where as (as I explained in the video) organic instruments are much more uneven and prone to low end rumble, AC noise, 60 cycle hum etc.

Regarding high passing I’ve found using linear phase EQs for high passing is often much more effective

Cut the midrange out and use a transient master/shaper to bring the sustain down.
a bit of absorption in the drum goes a long way. Even just a hand towel laid in the drum will help that a lot.

You might not hear these ultra low frequencies, but when you don't bypass them your amplifier and speakers still do the work to produce them. These frequencies carry a lot of energy, so it might clip out your system. That's what is meant with headroom I assume.
Hi Hannibal, indeed, I believe Matt was trying to say don't just high pass for the sake of it! I 100% agree with you and have many, many videos making that exact same point!
Also, it is very important to remember he works (as we said in the video) with mainly programmed material which has already been very heavily eq'd etc, where as (as I explained in the video) organic instruments are much more uneven and prone to low end rumble, AC noise, 60 cycle hum etc.
