    I have many, many cardinals in my yard all year. I feed them black sunflower seeds in feeders and on a giant boulder. I also spread seed out on a concrete bench in the winter. I’ve also worked hard to create a lot of cover for them by planting all kinds of evergreens and shrubs. I love to watch them feed and listen to them sing. They truly are delightful.

    I live in central North Carolina and you know that is the heart of Cardinal country literally every single Saturday I go to this one restaurant called Hardee’s, and I almost always greeted with one or two Cardinals usually a male or male and female and I live literally 10 minutes down the road so I was like I need to have Cardinals in the yard. I also saw two in my backyard and we first moved in a couple of months ago so I know they’re there. I just bought a house a birdhouse feeder, cardinal phone, but I want to track all types of Bernie’s I love birds, but 100% would love to see beautiful Cardinals in my yard every morning, the fall and I notice or fall is coming now starting to be way more than I usually are abundant

      beautiful, so happy for you. be sure to have a nice platform or hopper style feeder , Cardinals are ground feeders by nature so we have to have a secure stable feeder. Also place it near cover until they feel safe. enjoy. Bob

      There are many components to creating an amazing design. One place I found which successfully combines these is the Aviary magic method (google it if you're interested) without a doubt the most incredible course that I've heard of. look at this super website.

    Without knowing it, by spreading sunflower seeds and nuts on the ground to feed the squirrels, i've attracted cardinals, blue jays, doves, juncos that all prefer to eat on the ground. Then i bought different bird feeders that i filled with sunflower kernels, and added a bigger perch, but the Cardinals aren't interested. How strange is that! My efforts to please the carninals weren't wasted since yellow finches appeared.

Now not uncommon for there to be 8 to 10 males, and 8 to 10 females at their morning and evening feedings. (Just make sure to put out enough for the squirrels that will show up)

    I've never seen a bag of corn labeled steel-cut. I know what cracked corn looks like and what steel-cut oats look like, so assuming it's similar in appearance to the latter.
    Is there a common brand that you recommend over others? Or do I have to scour all the ingredient labels specifically for steel-cut corn? I'm in the U.S. (Michigan).

    This was helpful. Thank you. You started out by saying location was very important, but then you talked very little about location specifically. By the location of the Cardinal feeder behind you, are we to assume that a good location is in the middle of the yard, away from trees and bushes, and about 8 feet off the ground?

    • @gilligallou
      @gilligallou  2 роки тому

      morning, thank you , each circumstance is different for sure, the feeder set up we have here is good because there is great cover on both sides of the yard, also we have been established here for several years, two generations of Cardinal families. Experimentation with location will show you the best spot as feeder visits increase. thank you , Enjoy, Bob

    Boss, I need your help. I am trying to feed cardinals from my NYC fire escape. There is a huge park across the street and I see cardinals frequently but how to I get them to come to my feeder? Unfortunately I have reflective casement windows so this is what may be spooking them but I'm still trying to figure out a way to feed these beautiful birds. Also, to complicate the matter, what can I feed the cardinals that both house sparrows and pigeons won't eat? I want to keep the invasive species away and feed the cardinals. With whole peanuts I've been able to feed blue jays and downy woodpeckers and the pigeons stay away. Now I just want to be able to feed cardinals too. Thanks.

      Depending on the height of your feeder, and distance from the trees, you might be out of luck. Here are some of my own notes... 1) it took the birds 2-3 months to even locate our new feeder, so don't lose patience. 2) Cardinals eat black oil sunflower and safflower seeds. You don't need to buy any of those special mixes, you can just buy these seeds in bulk. 3) this is the one that might affect your success on your NYC fire escape. Place the feeder near trees/brush, and other types of bird-friendly cover. Our feeders are 10 ft away from a row of trees. The birds line up in the trees and take turns at the feeder. Sadly on a NYC high rise, it just might not be a natural location where Cardinals will notice your feeder, and it might be too far away from their comfort zone. I don't mean to be a party pooper, just trying to give you realistic expectations. Good luck!

      Rick Leitch To my surprise, mother cardinal made a nest in my balcony under my umbrella. I 'm living in condo and have no yard. I love birds, but rarely see them. I didn't try to attract any birds since I 'm renting. The nest has three eggs in it. Since I noticed her eggs I started to feed them( mother And father). She eats her seeds and flies to her nest. Seating there all the time, hardly go anywhere. I trying to avoid going to balkony as much as I can to not scare her. I see it is too hot for her because of strong afternoon sun.

      @@liluniadomoczowski5783 I'm glad you were successful without even trying! It is so special that you get to witness the circle of life, of such a beautiful bird, so closely. Since my previous comment the food we provide in our feeders has evolved a little bit. We now exclusively feed shelled sunflower hearts (to prevent waste building up below the feeders) mixed with blueberry suet nuggets. I fear this new food combination has been a little too successful and we've robbed our neighbors feeders of all of their birds.

      What i find to be most important to cardinals is keeping the feeder close to cover - shrubs, cedars, spruce etc. I use a squirrel proof feeder that my cardinals love. Brome Mini. Cheapest one you can buy at $35. Other Brome models just as good for a little more and hold more seed - brome legacy, standard etc. You get the most bang fir the buck with this feeder because it has perches ( fir cardinals)and also a wire frame for woodpeckers, nuthatches etc.
