    So nice to see someone who understands technique. If you don’t mind a critique it’s really old school technique to press seams and darts flat before pressing open. It makes the fabric relax. It was a revelation when I learned it from some videos in the 80s.

    You set in sleeves like my Grandma taught me, and in well made patterns, I’ve never had any trouble setting sleeves. I’ve figured fussy fitting in sleeves the first go is better than repeated rounds of sleeve nightmares.

    Wow, I have the exact same pattern. My problem is that the dress is not in my size, and I'm a guy, and generally don't wear dresses 😊 (Not in the wife's size either).
    I guess we will have to find someone who needs a 34" bust sized 1950's dress, so I can have a go at sewing this dress. Your bodice has come together really well, can't wait to see the finished dress.

    I used to sew all of my nightgowns as I was pretty tall. I also love dresses. I’m going to start sewing these things again. The clothing options are hideous here in the Midwest of the US. It’s all for large square people. What has happened ! I think we need the classy back. Thank you so much.

    Of course I love the pattern and the fabric you've chosen; because I wore pretty dresses like this one during the 1950s. And, you selected the perfect music for a great walk through history... sounds like John Lee Hooker on Guitar... Perfect!

    Very neat and workmanlike! I think the collar method is the same one that was recommended back in the TWENTIES. It sure is a chore, but the results are lovely. ☺

    So that's how those pointy wheel things are used?!
    I scared my cat with the noise I made.
    Not only does it explain what those things are for, but how to deal with marking white fabric.

    Would you please tell me, how many yards of fabric did you use to make the dress? I am thinking of buying a vintage pattern but I can't find where it says how much yards of fabric I will need

    • @RetroClaude
      @RetroClaude  4 роки тому +2

      That would depend on the width of the fabric. The yardage is usually given on the back of the pattern envelope, but fabrics were much narrower in the past. This pattern called for 5 yards of fabric but as my modern fabric was much wider I have just over a yard leftover.

    Curious where you order from for non-fusible interface? I've avoided patterns with interfacing so far because I don't want to use the fusible stuff.

    • @RetroClaude
      @RetroClaude  8 місяців тому

      I've previously bought the 'traditional' interfacing from Minerva. I've still got some in stash so haven't bought it in a while so I hope they still sell it! If not it's essentially a lightweight calico, or muslin. So long as you prewash it first it should behave the same way. In fact that might work out cheaper in the long run!

  • @yvonnecrowley7934

    Why do you tie the ends of your dart threads rather then backtack?

    • @RetroClaude
      @RetroClaude  3 роки тому +2

      The back tacking can create a little lump if you don't get the stitches exactly on top of one and other. Then when you go to press the dart it's much harder to get a crisp point with no puckers. It's a little thing but it makes a big difference 😊

    • @jordisbraun4985
      @jordisbraun4985 2 роки тому

      I read , in the 50s the material was not elastic and therefore you had to knot the ends of the yarn during sewing. today with most elastic material it would be better to make back-stitches.

      It's from H&F fabrics on Western Road, Brighton. There is a link in the description to their website but I think it is a bricks and mortar shop only!

    What the heck is "daily government section exercise" 🤔 maybe I wrote what she said wrong but I listen to the same part like 3 times...

    • @RetroClaude
      @RetroClaude  3 роки тому +6

      Hi! I said government sanctioned exercise. This was filmed while we were in lockdown in the UK. You were allowed to go out for exercise once a day for no more than an hour. I wanted to make clear in the video that I was obeying the government's restrictions. Hence, government sanctioned exercise.
