The ending deals with philosophy & the deeper meaning of what it is to exist, Cliff even spelled it out earlier in the game for dumb people "I think therefore I am" referencing the 17th century philosopher René Descartes who brought the idea that you know you exist because of the fact you are thinking about the issue, thereby making everything else around you open to interpretation. So the fact that another dimension SEEMINGLY created their universe it in fact was just that they made a universe template that ended up connecting to their universe as it matched exactly what made up their reality(multiverse theory in the story says all universes that can be imagined exist) this was a tool to initiate the philosophical debate whether they truly existed to which Cliff made the reference that it didn't matter because I think therefor I am thus confirming they all did exist and were real.

4D beings, Reapers, the concept has never really paid off well regardless of who does it. I almost wonder if having this mysterious outer dimensional/galaxy threat is even good story telling to begin with.
My problem here is not they weren't paid off cause they were, but there were lacks of explanation, as in plot holes in the dozens. One in particular spawning many questions, the time gate. Why bother telling them if they were gonna destroy them anyway? More so, the "bug" that they're hinted at fixing is implied to be the trio of our characters who were in fact created after said warning. Not to mention their form of antivirus were created in the form of in-universal cosmic beings that were wiping out anything but the problems (in fact saving Fayt from the Vendeeni while they could've taken him out alongside the planet) but didn't seem absolutely invincible (like at least two of these were destroyed by the good guys). What I'm getting at is, why bother with all the theatrics? Maybe most of its just nitpicking, but when you set up such an insane plot twist, you need more than a few handwavey explanations. And if the people in that simulation are capable of thinking for themselves, that makes them alive and sentient just as much as we are. Just fun philosophical things to think about.
Till the End of Time was and is a top 10 RPG, up there with Chrono Trigger and FFVII. Literally everything about it, especially at the time, was insanely good. I cannot hate this game. That twist also blew my mind the first playthrough. Now, admittedly, it was my first Star Ocean game, so I didn’t have any prior nostalgia, lore or understanding destroyed by the twist. As a purely standalone game, TTEOT is a masterpiece. As a Star Ocean game, it might be confusing and bad. I don’t know, I have only played SO2 since, and that is pretty good still.
Star Ocean stories have always been kind of rubbish, but the optional character interactions, at least in the first two games, are amazing. Wanna just skip all that and fight bosses and complete the game? Cool. Wanna stop in a town and get a drink with another party member, causing them to bond and behave a little differently in combat? Go ahead. It's those I play the games for; there isn't really much in the way of angsty JRPG drama, just a group of friends on a journey together, and the ability to walk into a town, find the other party members, and just hang out, is not something you saw enough of in games back then. The SO games end up being not about the story, but how your characters are affected by it, and I love that so much. Unfortunately, later games stripped that part down. Star Ocean 3 was where they first started to skimp on the party interaction stuff and significantly reduce the amount of alternate endings, and to skimp on all the "how the journey changes you" stuff in the game that intended to bring up the moral quandary of what even constitutes your perception of "you" was a massive misstep. That to me is why it doesn't work, and that is what I think people have in mind when they accuse it of undermining everything. It would've been so interesting to have the characters' affection levels change their reaction to the Eternal Sphere reveal for instance - Fayt and Cliff questioning the nature of the friendship they've built; Albel feeling vindication for being a dick all the time; but they didn't do anything of the sort.
Had to stop before i got hooked and jumped back into this game. Also couldn't understand the language after "Mirage is best girl" I believe in English, it's "Nel is best girl."
hmmm you forgot some parts, i don't remember the klingons (yeah, i don't remember their names either, and i literally start playing this again a couple of months ago) workingwith the 4d beigns, the parents of fayt, one of the parents of sophia and 1 of the parents of maria (maybe both of maria and 1 of fayt) did experiments on them to put some special symbols in their dna so they could fight the 4d beigns, which said to them (those scientists) that they were going to be deleted 'cause they were reaching the technology (the exact same experiments they did to their children) of their creators (the 4d beigns) and in the end, the boss of "ubisoft" named lucifer still deleted the universe or galaxy maybe, or a sector, but fayt realize that if they think they exist and suddenly everything that was deleted came into existence again, i agree that the plot twist is dumb, but i had no problem with it
Star Ocean Till the End of Time only gets called "the worst plot twist in video game history" because it wasn't what you personally wanted it to be. The plot twist was absolutely fine in my book. In fact I would have found it very cliche if the Time Gate took you to the "Demon World" or "Heaven". I mean no one has told me why the plot twist was bad objectively. Everyone comes up with the same (and I am going to say it) excuse of "oh it literally didn't matter because it was all a game lol". The story takes this into account and they want to prove to Luther that they aren't just things or toys to be pushed around, yet time and again people who argue the "Video Game/VRCHAT LOL" criticism the game is....they completely forget that the characters weren't just "things", they were more than that. Also the reason Fayt can do Ethereal Blast, the gigantic laser attack that whipped out a Vendeeni ship, was because of the Destruction Gene. I will admit that they really didn't give a good explaination of what Symbological Genetics was, but it still follows the rules the universe provides. I mean Star Ocean 2 had the 10 Wisemen and Indalecio/Gabriel had the power to destroy the entire universe with the Crest of Annihilation. Star Ocean 3's plot wasn't bad, it was different, and different doesn't mean bad. I am sorry that you actually didn't get to fight angels and demons in 4D Space and fight the reincarnation of Yahweh or whatever like you all wanted, but that's your problem.
Once again, that's your opinion, which is boring to debate in the first place because you can't debate with opinions. What's actually garbage is not hearing an objective reason why the plot twist was bad. You just said "I don't know how to end this, fuck it", like you know what the writers are thinking at the time. Nice try champ, you don't have ESP or mind reading abilities, so you're going to have to try again with that. People not liking the plot twist isn't the issue, I could literally give two fucks if anyone likes it. Everyone is entitled to their opinion, however your opinion has absolutely no basis whatso ever in debate. People say it's the worst ending ever objectively, and sorry to say but the burden of proof lies on you morons to prove that. Maybe one day I will hear an actual argument instead of shitty nonsense that is literally copied and pasted from everyone else. Get a new trick, this one is old.
Ok, so basically towards the end the game because an endless boss rush with no character or story development, ending in a twist that undoes ALL of the character development and lore in all three games that were out at the time. Within the narrative of the story, NONE of it was real anymore and it did not make sense that video game characters would just jump out of their own games with barely an explanation. It's improbable and we don't learn anything new about our characters after the reveal of the 4D world other than "they want to exist." bfd, tell me something interesting about the last boss. All the previous conflicts in the game are suddenly dropped for a tacked-on existential crisis. So either everything before the "plot twist" felt like a total waste or it should've had just skipped to that part and then fleshed out the characters because at the very least it was not a very good transition.
TL;DR It felt like how it would probably feel if Star Wars or Lord of the Rings turned out to actually be all taking place in a VIDEO GAME within a MOVIE. Or if the entire Harry Potter series was revealed to be an escapist hallucination to cope with abuse.
Albel was my dude, on god! Though, I disagree that this game has the “worst Plot Twist of all time”…on the contrary. Considering how this game was mostly developed (at the time) before the Squaresoft/Enix merge, the twist and 3rd Act itself was a ballsy FU to their future second-half (and rivals before then). The Eternal SPHERE being a stand in for Square; the whole aspect of their universe mattering immensely to them yet the occupants of the “4D Space” only see it as a distraction/potential solution to their perpetual boredom since their society was basically the Utopia/Hegelian “End of History” that people are so cocksure they’d want as Communists/Socialists. I thought it was pretty clever (for the time) going back to it a couple years ago (to get every Battle Trophy/Inventor/1000 Bunny Race wins)…when you divorce it from the in-game context (metatextual). But compared to the story of Star Ocean 2/Second Story or even Star Ocean/First Departure, it’s an absolute slap in the face 🤷🏽♂️
What? I liked the story. I thought it and the plot twist was cool. Still do now. The concept of UP3 and the pay off of it starting in (spoilers but not really for a 13 year old game…)The Last Hope was pretty cool to see.
I spent hundreds of hours on Star Ocean 2, and i loved the story of Star Ocean 3. I thought it was very original when i played it (2004 or something), at that time, there were not a lot of stories or movies that was questionning reality (as i knew, at least), and the main twist was unexpected. But I guess it's so cool to destroy a story by pretending being dumb, replacing names, not explaining anything, and pretending it's trash and illogical, just because it's unusual (like in the video i mean). But for me it's one of the best stories i played, i was really into it (considering it was 15 years ago).
My problem with the game isn't the plot twist(even though it's very...questionable and is pretty much the sole reason why they wont make any other game take place after SO3) My problem is that you're on Elicoor III for pretty much the entire game. Like how you gonna tell me that we video games and NOT let me explore the 4D world more than just a small city, an arcade and a lab.
So it's like FFX in that you play as a character that isn't real fighting against the creators of this world that is not real. People who use technology that you aren't allowed to use. For reasons...

I hated that plot twist so much I'm still angry just thinking about it
Star Ocean stories have always been kind of rubbish, but the optional character interactions, at least in the first two games, are amazing.
It would've been so interesting to have the characters' affection levels change their reaction to the Eternal Sphere reveal for instance - Fayt and Cliff questioning the nature of the friendship they've built; Albel feeling vindication for being a dick all the time; but they didn't do anything of the sort.
suggestions for remember the plot: resonance of fate, ni no kuni, el shaddai, and metal gear solid 4
omg, crazy funny. laughed a lot. its like a "try not to laugh" video.
Best one yet.
I enjoyed the story and ending.
Had to stop before i got hooked and jumped back into this game.
Also couldn't understand the language after "Mirage is best girl"
I believe in English, it's "Nel is best girl."
Wtf, this story literally reminds me of what’s happening in Kingdom Hearts series at the moment. Wow lol
Uh no. Not even close to kingdom hearts dumb ass plot
@@omensoffate You obviously haven’t played KH3 DLC lol
nice job
I don't think i even heard of this game
so the plot twist was
(spoilers)
ubisoft
(terry bogard engrish voice)UUUUUBBBIIIIISOOOOFFFFTTTTTT
oh virtual reality there's that too
hmmm you forgot some parts, i don't remember the klingons (yeah, i don't remember their names either, and i literally start playing this again a couple of months ago) workingwith the 4d beigns, the parents of fayt, one of the parents of sophia and 1 of the parents of maria (maybe both of maria and 1 of fayt) did experiments on them to put some special symbols in their dna so they could fight the 4d beigns, which said to them (those scientists) that they were going to be deleted 'cause they were reaching the technology (the exact same experiments they did to their children) of their creators (the 4d beigns) and in the end, the boss of "ubisoft" named lucifer still deleted the universe or galaxy maybe, or a sector, but fayt realize that if they think they exist and suddenly everything that was deleted came into existence again, i agree that the plot twist is dumb, but i had no problem with it
the battle system is cool and all, but the story is weeeiiirrrrddd
Ehh it was complete garbage all that build up for the writers to be like " idk how to end this, *fuck it* "
Once again, that's your opinion, which is boring to debate in the first place because you can't debate with opinions.
Simpleton Apollo
Well said brother 😊
Never heard of it
Wow...that plot twist! :P XD
He forgot about the planet styx ha ha!
This is fucking hilarious. I'm playing the game Right now, and know the plot exactly
Dude, please bury the “Bruce Wayne” premier skin in Injustice 2.
Still my favorite RPG. Great combat
Intresting and not bad plot this 4d... have in there a potencial... but i feel
like a little to force... Xenosaga and DDS better in like this story
What? I liked the story. I thought it and the plot twist was cool. Still do now. The concept of UP3 and the pay off of it starting in (spoilers but not really for a 13 year old game…)The Last Hope was pretty cool to see.
I've never had a JRPG plot that made me as angry as this one did. Probably because I loved Star Ocean 2 so much.
Joshua Norden It did poop on that game...and it's universe. But I still liked it.
It did nothing of the sort. The story just wasn't to your liking, that's all.
Simpleton Apollo no it was bad. The twist wasn’t the only thing wrong with it. The cliche characters and abysmal pacing were also problems.
Hey guys y’all forgot to review sekirei a popular harem series
So what will top this?
Kieran Mclaughlin remember the plot of skies of Arcadia?
my frigging god they digital devil saga'd my mind in this game too????; also please try to make a a try to remember the plot of digital devil saga XD
My problem with the game isn't the plot twist(even though it's very...questionable and is pretty much the sole reason why they wont make any other game take place after SO3)
My problem is that you're on Elicoor III for pretty much the entire game. Like how you gonna tell me that we video games and NOT let me explore the 4D world more than just a small city, an arcade and a lab.
The people trying to defend this game confound me.
hey sugar punch design works can you guys review haganai I don't have many friends . just for you 😻
Hate when I click for seriousness and get comedy. -_-
i what
Ok, gameplay is good but story is trash. Good!
So it's like FFX in that you play as a character that isn't real fighting against the creators of this world that is not real. People who use technology that you aren't allowed to use. For reasons...
I haven't played this game and you know what... im glad i skipped it...
I'm here because i think Honkai star rail copy their concepts
Very bigoted review
Is nel really a lesbian or is that a joke
I always suspected she was a lesbian based on her interactions with Claire.
Fiiiiiiiirst
