    I have been using Dexcom GCM for a few years now, starting with the G4 and up to the G7. Thank you very much for your very educational, and easy to follow videos. Here is one more secret. If you are a cyclist and use a Garmin bike computer you can get your G7 readings to display on your bike computer’s screen. This is a potentially lifesaving feature. No more fear of going low and “bonking” during a ride. Thank you for your videos, and thank you Dexcom and Garmin!

    Thanks for all your help these last few months. My daughter was losing weight fast and very thirsty. She was peeing her bed alot lately. At 6 yrs old it was somewhat confusing. Thought maybe it was a funk and also a growth spurt. I instantly thought maybe it's diabetes as my sister's son was diagnosed with diabetes at only 18 months old and almost died. We took her to her doctor and found out she had high ketones. Emergency room confirmed she had type one diabetes. It has been a rough road as we found her in the middle of the night probably around 20mg/dl and was unconscious. things are much more normal after watching your videos and changing our diets and just wanted to say thanks and wish the best.

      That is how I was diagnosed back in 1976... I was ill.. parents thought it was the flu, and fed me flat pop (with sugar! no died stuff just yet, but to settle the tummy from tossing my cookies), and then I started to hallucinate, so they took me to the hospital in the middle of the night. Hello coma! I had the highest blood sugar in Canada to survive. (at that time) Now.. try to tell me that I could no longer have my grandparents freshly tapped maple syrup *ever again*! Yup, things have changed, so thankfully your daughter has access to much more advanced technology to help maintain a healthy and happy life. I had to test my urine to guess what my blood sugar was. lol It will soon become second nature to her, and make sure you can get her around others going through the same thing. I ended up going to a T1D camp and that helped quite a bit. Cheers!

    • @angelahatt6161
      @angelahatt6161 21 день тому

      I was also diagnosed at 6yr. It has been challenging as I am very brittle, and there was nothing modern when I got it. It is a challenging disease, and I am sorry your precious girl has it. It is encouraging though that we have so many wonderful inventions now to help with it. Don't hesitate to get her an insulin pump if she needs it. There is no truth to the rumors about pumps helping you to cheat! It was probably started by a nondiabetic. It simply makes glucose control better and easier.
      I wish you and your daughter the best of health! Angie Hatt

    I'm looking forward to using the G7. Have to wait until it can be used with my Tandem pump. Hopefully soon. I use my thighs quite a bit along with my arms. When I use my thigh I place it in between the top and side and sometimes on the top part. I get very good results. You can get stickers for the G7 and the G6 if you want to dress them up. Can also get over patches with designs. Makes it fun to wear especially for kids.

    @CortyJ Рік тому +3

    Thanks Tom! I’ll be interested to see if there are improvements in the G7 graph stability by the time it integrates with the tandem pump. Currently, I still get some “jittery” graphs with my G6, usually related to placement, but my pump sees those sudden jumps in the graph and will often give me a bolus thinking I’m rising rapidly, even though it is just jumping up but then remaining stable. This is very frustrating, and I usually take it right out of Control IQ mode when it’s doing this, but that negates the point of having a closed loop system. Time will tell I guess. I love the options they have included now for the alerts (hahaha, six hours of zen silence!) and you make a great point about the receiver… thanks for the great content!

    TacAway (in the US, I don't know about overseas) - works great for me as a skin prep before putting on an infusion set or Sensor. Just wipe it on your skin, let it dry (drys really fast) and the adhesive sticks great. Way better than alcohol wipes. I only learned this by accident, but now I do it all the time.

    I have resisted the receiver but you make a good point about the size/weight. I am having trouble getting used to carrying my phone all the time. You’ve convinced me and even before I finish this video I’m off to charge the stupid receiver.
    Came back to add that I just came back from watering the plants and deadheading my flowers and OMG that receiver was awesome. So light. I am not used to taking my phone when I go outside to water plants or into the bathroom or just to the other room and this is great for me. Actually the Dexcom G7 was free for me and my condition as not being diabetic, but I have hyperinsulinemia and reactive hypoglycemia whereas the freestyle libre systems cost me an arm and a leg. I was really surprised that my insurance covered the sensors and the receiver free of charge and I even called Dexcom, previously, and they said if I needed help getting coverage they'd help me. I just activated my 2nd sensor and I love it. Haven't had any sensor disconnects, the calibration is awesome, and I love that I was able to get the receiver as my phone isn't officially covered by Dexcom.

    Regarding getting Insurance companies to cover my G7 sensors, I have a story to tell...
    I have United Health Care, and they cover the Dexcom, but not the Libre. However, when I applied for Pre-Authorization, it was denied because I am HypERglycemic, as opposed to HypOglycemic. Apparently, United Healthcare only covers the CGM if your blood sugar runs too LOW, not high, and you're not on insulin.
    Well, I appealed that decision with the argument that even though I had a HIGH blood sugar problem, I need to get visibility to trends in my blood sugar, not just point-in-time which is all the finger-sticks can do.
    Bottom line, my appeal was accepted.

    Hello, a very good video.
    I live in Germany, so it may be that the facts here are a little different than in other countries. Here, the statutory health insurance pays for the sensors if they have been prescribed by a specialist (diabetologist). So far (Dexcom G6) I always got a permit for one year. From March 2023, I switched to the Dexcom G7 and immediately got a two-year permit from the health insurance company, as the G7 is significantly cheaper than the G6. I was initially very disappointed by the unreliability of the G7 (Ver. 008, production date August-September 2022). The last quarterly delivery (nine sensors) as well as 2 sensors sent to replace defective sensors were all not operational. Either immediately after trying to pair the sensor, I received the message "Pairing unsuccessful" or "Sensor failed. Replace sensor now". I was convinced that I would return to the G6 and had already asked Dexcom what to do (submit a new prescription from the specialist for the Dexcom G6).
    Since I had to wait a day for the follow-up delivery and my diabetologist still had a G6 sensor in the practice (I still had a transmitter that was not completely used), I got it as a gift and used it. When the replacement delivery of G7 sensors arrived, this revision was 012 (production date May 2023). I used the G7 in parallel with the G6 and noticed some similarities but also some significant differences:
    1. The measured values of the G6 and the G7 matched very well after an initial calibration. I usually calibrate the sensors 8 to 10 hours after setting, but only if the values are stable (not after eating or after an injection) and differ more than 20% from the measured blood glucose value.
    2. Where there were deviations, sometimes the G6 and sometimes the G7 was closer to the measured blood glucose level.
    3. G/: No gaps in the blood glucose measurement when changing the sensor, G6: No values for two hours.
    4. The G7 has much more subtle warning tones than the G6.
    5. With the G7, a freely configurable pause can be taken after a warning until the meal (if the values are too low) or the insulin (if the values are too high) are effective, i.e. it is much less annoying.
    6. The receiver is more informative, smaller and lighter, and its battery lasts much longer (10 to 12 days for me).
    7. The G7 -receiver is readable for me at night without glasses, because it has a higher contrast (white lettering on a black background), the G6-receiver is not readable for me at night without glasses.
    8. The G7 app offers more information than the G6 app.
    9. The G7 sensor is smaller, so it is less annoying and less noticeable.
    10. The sensor patch of the G7 doesn't itch, the G6 patch is itchy for me in summer.
    11. The G7 comes in Germany with an extra over-patch that I personally don't need because the G7 holds on my skin even without this extra patch.
    12. The G7 reacts faster and more strongly than the G6 to rising or falling values.
    13. The sometimes strongly fluctuating measured values (more bouncing dots than a line graph) of the G7 to Rev. 008 has from Rev. 012 largely disappeared. On the other hand, the G6 has a nicely balanced blood glucose curve, which reassures the user, regardless of whether the values are correct or not.
    After these experiences, it is clear to me that I will stay with the G7, as I also assume that it will be improved further in the future.

    I would love to see a placement comparison of the thigh/inner thigh area compared to the 'approved' sites. I've always used the thigh for G6/7 and Freestyle Libre 2 and 3 and it seems to work totally fine. I like having it in that location as it doesn't scrape on walls and its not visible.

    I am just starting to use the G7. I previously was on the Libre 3 and switched to Dexcom because I can get a 90-day supply through insurance. I started with the G6 but didn't like it, I felt it was going backward in technology and it was bulky compared to Libre 3. I am on my 3rd G7 now and I really like it, I haven't gotten a low due to compression at night(I use the back of my arm). I have a Samsung phone and have not lost signal unless I get 40 or 50 feet away, so your problem may have to do with using an Apple phone. I want to thank you for your tutorials for using the G6 and the G7.

    I place my G7 where I had my G6 , on my upper abdomen to the side slightly where there is enough fat . I did the arm and it was painful and I couldnt get safe and reliable readings. I have the dedicated receiver and the only signal losses I have is if I walk away from the receiver or if im around another RF signal that interferes with the dexcom. As far as putting the sensor on I would say its a good idea from my experience not to have it so the probe is inserted vertically rather to make sure it is horizontal (at least in my case) so that the fine probe doesnt get flexed on heavily if you bend over or sit down and so on .. Other wise it is very accurate with some quirks here and there and i personally havent had much issue with the adhesive yet .

      My doctor and nurse told my the stomach is fine. The nurse, who had gestational diabetes, said wearing it on the stomach was more accurate for her. I found that to be correct. I usually place it slightly on the side of my abdomen to prevent accidental rip-offs.

    Hello,
    How cool that you give such an extensive review with all kinds of helpful tips about the Dexcom G7.
    I found it particularly interesting to turn off the sound on the Dexcom G7 app. I use the Dexcom G6 Dash instead of a telephone. Unfortunately I can't turn off the sound of low BG alarms on that. Super irritating if, for example, you are at a classical concert or if you think that others do not need to know that you are receiving a BG alarm. Is there a way to completely disable the alarms of the Dexcom G6 reader?
    I can set the function to vibrate, but in case of danger (low BG) an alarm still goes off. super annoying

    Big let down! Other than the faster set up time, I’ve been so disappointed with the G7. Main issues are as follows;
    1.The single loss issues are truly awful.
    2.The stability issue is messy. 3.I’ve had a lot more failed sensors with the g7.
    4. I’ve had false lows a few times with pressure on the sensor while sleeping.
    5. The widget doesn’t work very well. I think that is due to apple but still.
    I’ll have to try some of these tips but I think this product was released too early, particularly in Europe.

    One warning about the G7 receiver: the plastic face of the receiver is very, very prone to scratching. Do not put anything else in your pocket if you carry the receiver in it. A couple of times I put my car keys in my pocket with the receiver. I quickly noticed that the face was scratching badly, and in fact it scratches so much that at first I thought it was “fogged” from dirt or skin oil. It was, in fact, extremely scratched from rubbing against the keys (and I don’t carry a bundle, just a car key, house key, and the fob for my car on one of those circular key doodads). I rarely carry change (coins) but I assume they would scratch the face of the receiver, too. The scratches are permanent, and I can’t imagine why Dexcom designed a pocket-sized receiver made of such easily scratched, soft plastic. From the get go, make sure your receiver doesn’t share a pocket with anything else!

      Glad to hear that you can still get the G7 with a receiver. I'm in Canada, where G7 is just being introduced - and I prefer the receiver over using my mobile since the G4 I was gifted in 2015 and now back on G6 with socialised system in my province that I had to fight for as a hypo unaware T1D of 60 years (it's gotten worse with age LOL) . Somehow - Dexcom Canada is being very hush hush about there being a receiver available - but obviously where ever you live - it's available. Psst, the G4/G5 receiver screens were the same - screen protector is a must!

    • @cedarwaxwing3509
      @cedarwaxwing3509 9 місяців тому

      @@FatCatAnna I am in the US … I should have mentioned that, sorry. I also prefer the receiver as I don’t generally carry my iPhone around in my house with me (I’m retired and like many older people don’t feel like I’m joined at the hip to my phone!). Listening to many of the diabetes UA-camrs, it does seem that availability varies quite a bit from country to country. It probably has something to do with Dexcom’s profits. As I’m sure you know, here in the states our health care is mainly private sector and medical insurance coverage is expensive (even our “socialized” retirement health care - Medicare - is inadequate and requires supplemental private pay add-ons), BUT providers can charge high rates and insurance will generally pay them, so Dexcom probably makes more money charging US health insurance for G-7 systems and the receivers than the Canadian health system is willing to pay them (after all, the app is free so why pay extra for the receiver). I wish I had known about the soft plastic screen before I scratched mine up! Lesson for next time. BTW, I have had two sensor failures in the latest batch sent to me (I get a three month supply). One had no adhesive on the backing and immediately fell off; the other failed as soon as it warmed up. I contacted Dexcom and they quick-shipped me replacements with essentially no questions asked, which tells me they might be encountering a higher failure rate than expected. They also tell me that they can’t supply extra overpatches for G-7 sensors. Sounds like they are overwhelmed. Good luck getting a receiver (perhaps you could get one through a contact in the states??). And is your cat actually overweight? 😊🐈‍⬛

    I have a serious medical issue with my arm so can't use a G7 sensor there, but Dexcom won't recommend any other locations. I listened carefully to the alternate locations some U.S. customers are using. I'd appreciate any feedback in how successful these alternate locations are. Abdomen better than thigh? Calf or chest even better?
    I'm unhappy my supplier is switching me to G7. What if someone has severe arthritis and can't attach the sensors on the back of the upper arm? Or has had an accident & now has an injured arm? In some ways, G6 was preferable.
    That being said, sincere thanks for your helpful video. I have learned some important strategies in transitioning to the G7.

    Concerning tip #10. Presoaking the sensor. When you insert the new sensor, does it automatically start its 10.5 day lifespan? So if you presoak for 10 hours before starting the new sensor and stopping the old sensor, then you only have 10 days and 2 hours of life left in the new sensor?

    Isn't an over patch included with each Dexcom G7 sensor package? I found that the free over patches provided by Dexcom for the G6 are very good especially when used with a skin tac prep. The Lexcam over patches for the G6 are just as good except that the top liner is slightly more difficult to remove.

    • @HeatherDillard-wz1iz

      There are free patches included with the G7, but they are very thin and small. The edges start peeling almost immediately. My first G7 sensor came off in 2 days because the patch was too flimsy to do any good. I found some clear ones on Amazon that work much better and haven’t had any more come off.

    • @FuzzyJohn
      @FuzzyJohn 8 місяців тому

      @HeatherDillard-wz1iz I have absolutely no problems with the G7 overpatches. I am on the 4th sensor and I have no lifting edges after 10 days when I replace the sensor:
      1. Clean the area with alcohol and let dry.
      2. Insert the G7 sensor.
      3. Use a SkinTac pad around the sensor on the patch and on the skin then let dry 1 minute.
      4. Apply the overpatch.
      While showering I protect the sensor from the water stream and soap or lotion. At the end of 10 days the overpatch may look a little wrinkled but I have to pick at the edge to lift it off.

    How close can you put the new sensor to the old sensor during the grace period? Will having them too close to each other cause interference? My mother prefers to have the sensor on her abdomen (she has plenty of fat there).
    Mom's phone has a crappy battery so we use the receiver that came with the dexcom. Can the calibration be done with that thing? Also, can you pair a phone AND the receiver at the same time? I wish they had a longer range transmitter for caregivers so we can get alerts. Or maybe have the receiver also be able to transmit/connect to wifi or something, to send info to an app on another device so I could get alerts when her sugar gets too high or too low.
    The sensor not coming out happened with the very first one my mother ever got. But it was being used properly, it was just defective. It was being pressed against the skin very firmly and the little plastic thing receded into the applicator, but the receiver would not come out. The application was being done by the specialist who does this all the time and never had a problem before. Dexcom is sending us a new sensor to replace it though.
    Lexcom is the name of the adhesive strips?
    My mother wants to disable the rising fast alert. She just wants to know if her sugar is too low or too high so she can do something about it-- mostly if it gets too low so she can eat something.
    Hmm. Did they ever implement the direct to phone or other device as well? I'd love to get something direct to my phone. I couldn't seem to pair my phone with the transmitter though. it wouldn't read the barcode and never could detect the sensor even with bluetooth on.
    It took us MONTHS for Medicare to approve the G7. Mom finally got her Dexcom last Friday. Looks like since this video was posted that Tandem has made one of their pumps compatible with the G7.
    Thank you for this info!
