Great video Tony. When you see that big horseshoe you would think the cars would be pulled off the tracks to the inside. I was living in Kamloops in the late 70’s when they built this grade.
@@TonyVRailfanning i remember the scrapers working the grade where it close to the TCH. I think it was Emil Anderson Construction built the grade and then CP MOW came in.
38:20 mark: I like how the church bell is visible when the grade-crossing bell starts sounding. It's those little things that help to make your video compositions so enjoyable. I'm 2 weeks late in watching this, but I'm glad that I kept it bookmarked and eventually got to it. Such excellent work, and I'm thankful for it. Cheers !
Thanks Mike, I only had a partially charged battery for that shot on the drone so set it up to do the train reveal using the church as the main focal point. It turned out well I agree
Great series of videos of a beautiful part of our great country! Great aerial video! thanks, Tony. That's one of my favourite parts of BC, esp the Salmon Arm Pie Company in downtown SA. Best wishes for more great videos, such as along highway 16 west of Prince George, out to P. Rupert.
Stunning , beautiful clear day , most enjoyable Tony....thank you for your energy again....love the split screens and you've done it again to my headphones...love it.... Gotta love the Mountaineer... Thank you.....👍 🚂 😎
Your very welcome, sadly the entire province of BC is now under a blanket of smoke. Several communities are evacuating and homes are gone to the fires. A very dire situation
Great video with top shelf drone piloting. Can u direct me to a map showing the old grade and the horseshoe as I can't get the location in my head in relation to the Trans-Canada highway?
If you enter Tappen on google it gives you the map, Tappen is right beside Shuswap Lake at the bottom of the grade. The two EB/WB tracks are on the map, just follow it NW from Tappen.
@@TonyVRailfanning tks Tony for the map. It definitely helped. Couple of questions as I do not have any CPKC timetables. What is the distance from the start of the loop track around to where it rejoins the old mainline and the distance of the old main from the east end to where the loop track meets it?
Watch Demos videos of the Frank Slide area/grade. CP has frequent stalls there as they don't put enough power on for the WB grade. They then need to bring extra power from a following WB train, or tie down an EB train and bring power down the hill. At least on the Crowsnest pass the lost time for all of the stalls does not make CP add more power or keep extra pushers just east of the grade. It seems stupid to me, but they keep doing the same thing.
@@free2roam674 I agree, it does seem counterproductive to not have enough power on a train but it apparently comes down to cost it’s cheaper to have a stall every so often and give it a push than to have extra units on a train for the entire trip
@@TonyVRailfanning This I understand on the main line because there are 4 passes between Calgary and Kamloops. However, I believe on the Crowsnest line the only steep grade is at Frank. So I don't understand why they would not keep pushers at Lundbreck for the WB trains. However as you say it must not be worthwhile. Demos says there is almost a stall daily there. What a pita that must be. But hey, I am just a rail fan!! LOL.
Third time watching. Gets better every time. Thanks .
Thanks, glad you enjoy it.

Thanks Doug, It must have been quite the site for locals when it first was built

Back from holiday and enjoying your formidable vids again, Tony! 😍
Thanks Huns, hope your vacation was good?
It was very nice Tony, thank you too! Been in Eastern Europe, but without any rail contact. 😀 @@TonyVRailfanning

i thought so too,i would love to remodel the place for my summer home...

Great video, thanks. I used to live in Salmon Arm, beautiful area.
Thank you, I like the area and have thought about retiring there maybe
Excellent Tony! You captured the curve very nicely with your drone.
Cheers, Jack
Thanks Jack! I can’t say enough how much the drone has made Railfanning enjoyable for me.
Thanks!
Once again you are very kind. Thank you OM
Top shelf Tony. I really enjoyed your travels. Carry on with such great vids. Thanks for sharing.
Thank you Ken, more new locations on their way.

Tony, before they built the horseshoe did they use pushers there?
Im not 100% sure but I believe in the steam days they did. There was a wye at Tappen used to turn them around
Can u do a geddis vid next year and a revelstoke vid ?
I already have two videos of that area, look for “Geddis” in the search and Revelstoke as well
Are there accidents in this area like the spiral tunnel area?
There haven’t been any major derailments here that I am aware of.
Perhaps the heavy trains - coal, potash, grain - need 5 units (2,2 & 1) instead of 4! On the return (empty) journey they could shut down 2 of them!
Fuel costs are CPKC highest expense so putting even one more unit on would add thousands of $$ per trip

What major town is the tracks close to?
Blind Bay would be the closest
Very deceptive location. Just looks like flat farmland. The old grade must have been brutal
Yes, the old grade was very challenging even today trains stall weekly on the new grade needing a push up from a following train.
Hopefully there will be something left when the fires are over.
