By the way, the “ forwards“ I usually the bigger, stronger dudes, who typically do the scrimmaging.
The other guys are usually called the “backline” or simply “backs“ . The backline players are usually quicker and more agile. Although they can be beasts too.
The 7-1 split was used last year for the first time last year against the All Blacks and it was total domination. Please react to the highlights on the Match and you'll see how beautiful it is.

I wish the video would give a more clarity for new comers to rugby to understand. So basically there are 8 forwards and 7 backline players, the forwards are the ones up front doing the grunt heavy lifting work etc, like with the scrums and lineouts you see in the video, the backs are the fast boys and do the line breaks etc in most cases and 8 replacement players on the bench that can be brought on any time in the game or if there's a injury, most countries do a 5-3 split on the bench meaning 5 forwards and 3 backs, as forwards are more likely to have injuries and backline players are usually more able to play in different roles in the backline so don't need as many.
In 2018/2019 with that world Cup South Africa's head coach Rassie Erasmus implemented the 6/2 split also known as the bomb squad, 6 forwards and 2 backs, this combo decimated the competition and cemented South Africa for having the best and strongest scrum in World Rugby, because we can utilize our vast rugby talent and built men we grow in our country, also a major reason for South Africa winning the 2019 world cup. In 2023 for the first time South Africa implemented the 7/1 split as the video of the title says, which means South Africa in effect can replace their entire forwards with a fresh pack, and South Africa has so much depth in each position, that the replacement players are as good or in some cases even better than the starting forwards. So this meant total scrum and overpowering domination for the full 80 mins whilst most countries if they have accendancy in the game at scrum time usually have for 40-60 mins which gave the name the nuke squad. This soiled the powers that be(Mainly butt hurt New Zealand and England supporters) Calling it unfair that we are allowed to do it, but there is no rule against it, it's just no country other than South Africa have the rugby IQ and vast amount of talent to have so many world class players. We are just built different in South Africa. So that is what that first part of the video was, it was beaten coaches or rugby pundits of these nations that we beat saying it's unfair and they actually want to try and change the laws of the game just to stop South Africa from fielding the talent that they are able to make use of instead of trying to win in a fair contest on the pitch.
South African here we are the record holding 4x reigning World Rugby champions 🏆. We don't play rugby. We go to war!
To give it some context... a scrum consist of 8 players with a combined weight of 2200 pounds pushing the other side... we call them our nuke side...
Let me try to explain the Bomb Squad so Americans can Understand... The Bomb Squad consists of the Tanks. So on the half, they replaces ALL the tanks and the Jets have to play the entire 80mins with only 1 replacement option. Fitness needs to be next level.
Springboks are always the underdog in world cups, then pundits are saying rules need to change more playing time when they win it. I agree with you no footballer are playing that full out for 90 min.
