if you pull the tank and put a load of old bolts and cleaning fluid, shake the tank for a while to get the rust out. should help. that dirt will be clogging the carb
They learned about double row chains real quick we had the pickups from that era which were trashed without mercy, they took it, cabs are too small though but hey Mazdas were good cars I'm happy yours runs and drives ok, an English couple I met fruitpicking in OZ bought an earlier 1500 it ran great no dents no rust soggy brakes $600 I helped them bleed the brakes and they were away.

Love it -Defo grabs all the attention, I think I would sort the Alternator, and possibly swap the points out for a petronix and a Bosch blue coil- hopefully that rules out the ignition system.
