Very interesting about the construction of this building and the similarities between it and the Packard Auto Plant here in Detroit, Mi. U.S.A.. The Packard Plant was derelict. for several decades and was a haven for homeless people. Unfortunately, it also attracted people who were addicted to drugs, alcohol, and just a dangerous place to be around, day or night. After several bodies were discovered as a result of homicides it was decided 2 years ago to demolish it completely. The company l worked for was one of several who hauled away the debris from the demolition site. As a born and raised Glaswegian, l came from Keppochhill Road, Springburn, born there in 1952, l came to the U.S.A. in 1977 at age 25., l have just recently found you on UA-cam, l have been enjoying your videos tremendously. It's great to see all the places l remember from my childhood and part of my working life there. Thanks for that.
Very similar construction to the Lion Chambers in Hope St, another interesting building being left to rot
worked in weir pumps about 15 years ago , in the accounts department ,the inside was very impressive
I did my work experience there around 1992/93. Think it was in the stock control office right down at the back near the river so didnt get in the main office block.
Archibald Leitch was also the Architect of several impressive main Stands of football grounds around the UK
Ibrox and Arsenals old Highbury ground being two notable ones.
I’ve noticed the rear of the Sentinel building when passing by on the train through Polmadie , never knew what it once was , but it always reminded me of the look of the buildings on the island in Skyfall , where the character Silva had his base.
Now you mention it thats exactly what it looks like, Hashima Island.
Thank you_.
Thank you. I must check out this place when I get back to Glasgow.
Weirs is the only such factory still in its original use. Other Kahn-style early factories were the Arrol Johnston works at Heathhall, Dumfries (see: ua-cam.com/video/dhNwmpn8qnI/v-deo.html ) and at Tongland, Kirkcudbright (see: ua-cam.com/video/l-F_c9GtE8o/v-deo.html ). Sadly both are now derelict.
Was going to say, it looks like Weirs pumps. Maybe a good video could be made on that too?
Concrete cancer! Rebar rusts bursting out of the concrete. Shame...but stunning building!
Still don’t understand why they won’t demolish it. Surely if it’s crumbling away it’s a danger to the public?
For the same reason they don't demolish derelict castles or empty stately houses. The building is listed because of its historical significance and whos to say it won't be restored in the future.
@@AstonishingGlasgow I understand that but surely public safety comes before historical significance. It’s not like it’s good to look at it’s an eye sore. Let’s hope your right and they do restore it
I think its been lucky that there really arent many members of the public passing it where its located. The area is not busy and the land is not valuable so for now it can just sit there.
@@rab9309 It isn't a public safety issue as it is regularly safety assessed and further, 'eye sore' is a subjective term...for me, it's amazing for what it represents
So many beautiful buildings of stone were demolished in Glasgow and this pile of crap is listed A. Oh dear
Yes, just one such magnificent building being the St Enoch Hotel, demolished to make way for a shopping centre!
Regrettable now but on our way to school in the 1980's we smashed the last of its few remaining windows had no idea of its history, stupid kids.
