  • For this episode of Astonishing Glasgow I thought I would celebrate International woman's day and go in search of one of Glasgow's bravest heroines that has gone mostly forgotten.
I also trace the statues of the four women Glasgow has celebrated with statues in their honour.
(BTW, I realise now that I have mispronounced Matagorda all the way through the video)

I saw the Spanish war statue some 40 odd years ago. I still remember the saying. It is better to die on your feet than to live on your knees. It's nice to see it still there giving inspiration to future generations.

Truly a remarkable amount of work on your part to generate these astounding records from the people and the city of Glasgow. You can be very proud of your achievements in documenting these people in this series of short images. Well done young man.

Excellent wee video. The kind of thing that should be shown in schools and can spark discussion in different areas - historical representation or lack of for women, social history, a reminder to the girls of today that they can make a difference, ultimately whether remembered or not, the impact on society is still there.

Absolutely should be shown in schools, and beyond Glasgow. It's disgraceful how we weren't shown gems of womanhood like this-wasn't on the agenda, or was skewed against the fairer sex-both meanings of that phrase!

I miss those public toilets at St Vincent Place! It's murder when you get caught short in the toon centre these days! Really interesting video. Thanks!

Cheers bikeboy66. Its murder now if you get caught short in the toon, even McDonalds now lock their toilets unless you buy something.

About the Queen Victoria statue on horseback, i thought it was a meant if a horse has 1 leg up it meant the rider was wounded in a battle? I could be wrong though.

There's the GI Bride statue in Partick station. Glasgow's 5th statue of a woman!

I will need to go for a look but I dont think she would count as a 5th. The 4 in the video are statues of specific women.

Great video. Dolores Ibárruri is a controversial figure, a Stalinist who was responsible for the death of significant numbers of Spanish Trotskyists and Anarchists.

Cheers. I will be honest and say that I dont have a lot of knowlege on Delores Ibarruri (not even sure if I pronounced her name correctly) and that the statue is to commemorate the 2100 British volunteers and the female figure on the top was inspired by her rather than actually being a statue of her according to the artist. I hope I have not opened a can of worms.

@@AstonishingGlasgow no, you have not opened a can of worms at all. It is just something I think should be more widely known. I'm all for there being a statue and for remembering the volunteers, many of whom came from Glasgow, but it is a good reminder of how complex history can be. Maybe one day Ethel MacDonald will get a statue.

@@nobordersnoflags9905 ty, just had a wee look at some info on Ethel - yes, a statue would be amazing! Seems few heroes/heroines these days as msm feed the people with detritus narratives. Best wishes. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ethel_MacDonald
