    I live in Durham, my old company had its head office in Govan, as a result i visited it every month for over 30 years . This is what i think of glasgow and i hope a lot read and act on what i say . Glasgow folk are amazing , once they adopt you like a stray dog they will love and care for you for life . No pretence, what you see is what you get , working class people are wonderful, be it Glasgow, Newcastle, Liverpool, Birmingham etc etc etc , i feel as safe in Govan as i do at home . If you want a Disney version of Scotland go to Edinburgh, if you want the real Scotland come to Glasgow, act like a real human being , treat folk with decency and respect and they will wrap you in love and kindness. So give it a try people and after that you can walk round and wonder at its great architecture as well . Thank you Govan for zll tour kindness and love .

      It's the same in every town , people ignore the amazing things that they see every day in their own homes ,it needs outsiders to point them out . History is so important.

    Loved this! One of my relatives, in their youth, used to go on holiday to Govan. It took 3 days by horse drawn coach to reach Govan and she sat on the sand then paddled in the Clyde.....just imagine....Govan...a holiday resort!!!

    This was great. I have been following you for a while, but this one hit home since I was born and brought up in Govan. I was married in the church behind the Aiken fountain, back then it was known as St Mary's. Visited the old Parish Church as a school outing, and played basketball at the Pearce Institute. Still I did not know most of the background that you covered. Thanks for that.

      @AstonishingGlasgow  Рік тому +3

      One detail I couldn't fit into the video was that there were another 14 stones that were still in the graveyard in the 1970's. When they demolished the Harland and Wolf shed next door these stones vanished and were thought to have been destroyed or swept up with demolition waste. In the early 2000's however, Channel 4's Time team found fragments of them buried in the church yard but because the site is now a protected national monument they were recorded and reburied so there could still be more secrets hidden on the site.

    • @AstonishingGlasgow
      @AstonishingGlasgow  Рік тому +5

      I dont think its anything to do with gimmigrants but somebody has definitely made themselves look like a bit of a tratt. Maybe they will be big enough to realise their mistake, apologise and we can all continue being friends. I try to make Glasgow look like an interesting, friendly and positive place to visit or call home so I would be grateful if we can keep things light hearted and friendly. I can handle it if people don't like me but that dosnt mean I need to know about it or hear their opinion.

    Just found this page and subscribed. I was brought up in Govan/Drumoyne/Linthouse before moving to Ayrshire as part of the Glasgow overspill. I still spent holidays there and I remember this fountain but didn’t know what it was. Given market used to be behind it in a Saturday a bustling market back in the day. Govan was a hive of activity with the shipyards, neighbours in tenements all looking out for each other. Elder Park was fabulous with swing parks, boating pond and well maintained. Even better mid Hune when it was “Govan Fair” middle of June floats and a huge parade with the shows afterwards in Ekder Park. The walk through the tunnel to Particl or Whiteinch Park was long and I remember being exhausted. I asked a relative recently and was told it was now closed as too many attacks and very dangerous. I was very surprised to see that Elder Park primary school had been demolished. I attended there for a couple of years and a brilliant school. Surely that was a listed building and should have been protected as no different to Scotland Street School which is now a museum.

    • @AstonishingGlasgow
      @AstonishingGlasgow  8 місяців тому

      Thanks for commenting. There is a lot of Govan history on show at the Fairfield heritage centre if you can manage along (when its open between April and October) and the tunnel is open but you need to press a buzzer for the control room to let you through the gates.

We went by bus to Glasgow, underground to Partick, walked to the Riverside museum, Govan Ferry to see the Govan Stones, ferry back across the river, walk to Kelvingrove, walk to Huntarian Zoology museum with a quick visit to the main Huntarian museum before heading to the Botanic gardens! Great day in a great city!

      It is a fascinating area generally from what I'm finding out. If the planners had their way there would not be much of it left, but the French inspired architecture on some of the tenements near Queens Park is quite unique. Lots of good quality housing along with the Govanhill baths. I have found your site fascinating whilst planning our move to Glasgow.
