UPDATE - July 2024 EXTERNAL Access Guide HERE: • Truenas Scale - EXTERN...
Finally a tutorial for v2!!!! I thought I'm the only one with the breaking problem on v2. Thank you for the video I'll try it tomorrow
I was getting so frustrated! I really believe the permissions for the top level folder were messing with me for a while since the lower levels “inherit” from the parent. Best of luck, let me know how it goes!
a huge thanks from France ! Research this problem in english was definitely the best idea. Insane work ! All my family greats you
Glad I could help! Be sure to check out my video for external Nextcloud access if you plan on using this outside of your home network!
Great video, just failed to mention that you need to also select truenas certificate when setting up collabora, but thank you very much!!! Loved the video, helped me out so much when I was trying to fix my broken nextcloud install
Thank you so much, it worked!
thank you so much for doing this video
Glad I could help!
Hi Randy, I'm confused. I'm trying to run Truenas Dragonfish-24.04.0 and have a question about role in main appData catalogue. In my system after adding dataset the role column is empty. What have I done wrong? Thanks in advance! Cheers
I’ll look into it. I know dragon fish has some pretty substantial changes all around though. All my setup is cobia, haven’t touched dragonfish, and now electric eel is being pushed…needless to say, if this continues I’ll be forced into learning and making new videos every month for a long time 😂
thanks for the time saved :)
Glad I could help!
All URLs used to access your Nextcloud server must be whitelisted in your
how to do it?
Check out my external Nextcloud access video for how to set that up. A bit more involved, but worth it.
Thank you Randy! Awesome video, do you have any tips on migrating user data from an old data set to a new data set?
I do not yet, but as I go to electric eel and docker here shortly I’ll have to figure all of that out. I’ll post for sure.
can I set up next cloud or any good cheap cloud with a server like Ubuntu or ant media to run a low cost 24/7 streaming of my old videos to my UA-cam channel. This is the next big thing for UA-cam... do this and include additional good price webhosting with a decent free trial offer and it will be gold.
I have not looked into that particular use case. If I stumble upon something I’ll let you know!
Updated my Nextcloud version after following this tutorial, now nothing is working. Tried reinstalling multiple times, restarting the server, etc. 😢
My Nextcloud is stuck at "Deploying"
Yeah, that’s what was happening to me if there was a permission issue. I must have deleted the datasets 3-4 times before it finally worked for me. You’ve got to make sure the top level is set up for “apps” before creating the child datasets as it “inherits” everything from the parent dataset. It’s super frustrating I know. If you go to the apps page, click on Nextcloud, then look at kubernetes event history on the top right. It should list the error there, most likely says “failed to deploy” for a permission issue. I was ready to huck this computer out the window. But you can get it.
@@Randyisanerd Thanks, it finally worked for me.
Excellent! Glad to hear you got it up and running. 99% of my truenas issues are permissions related. They really need to figure something out there. 99.9% of their (albeit non-paying) customers need a wide open, 1 user setup. Permissions should be an add-on, not the other way around.
@@Randyisanerd Right
Is there a way to download custom firmware directly to the switch without a pc or jig? I’ve been seeing on Reddit people are starting to say they found a method through the switches build in browser, it’s just a matter of time before I discover it. I already tried the hats method but it doesn’t exist a
Anymore
Works on NextCloud 2.0.9!
Excellent. Thanks for the feedback!
After I get this setup, how can I access my Nextcloud server from the app on my phone? Is that the Tailscale thing? I'm very new to TrueNAS and IT in general. Thanks
Tailscale is the easiest for sure!
Got the "Your data directory and files are probably accessible from the internet. The .htaccess file is not working." error.
When i try to connect to the collabra directly, i get..
"SSL received a record that exceeded the maximum permissible length.
Error code: SSL_ERROR_RX_RECORD_TOO_LONG"
I’m honestly struggling with getting SSL certs to work as well to get rid of these errors. The “self signed” truenas cert throws the error, and every attempt at a cert from cloudflare isnt helping. Unless you’re manually adding port forwarding to your router to Nextcloud youre safe, it’s just a nag message. But I do hate it as well. I’ll let you know as soon as I find a solution the works.
Thanks for the detailed tutorial.
My Nextcloud is showing "Please use the command line updater because updating via browser is disabled in your config.php." after the update; i dont know what to do
Can you please help? thanks.
Well that’s a new one…I’ll check mine out and see if it says the same. It may just be because you could “update” from the web and break functionality originally. Not you’ve got to update the “app” in truenas. I wouldn’t worry about it…
@@Randyisanerd Thanks!! I'll wait; I had updated nextcloud to 29.0.3 from truenas apps menu but now cant access portal; shows message as above
Do you use this and the image software?
I use immich for photo backups, although, this looks looks capable as well
I can add my files to the user data fiile. In the container terminal run : sudo php occ files:scan --all Not sure it will work on truenas as I can't seem to get anything done on it. Can't get my head wrapped around this mess. I use unraid. Not sure if that makes a difference.
Oh nice. Makes sense a command line entry would scan and update the file list. Just weird it has to come to that in the first place to me. But thank you for posting it!
La guida è esaustiva, peccato che in questa versione di nextcloud della community di truenas non ci sia la possibilità di inserire nella sezione storage condivisioni NFS, è possibile farlo solo con smb. Sulla versione Truecharts invece si può fare.
Very clear and helpful. Do you have a video on how to setup tailscale and nextcloud with truecharts. I have been unable to set this up. Thanks!!
I see you have a section on setting up tailscale at the end of another video. I will try it out. Thx.
You beat me to it 😂 if you run into any snags let me know.
@@Randyisanerd Thanks to your videos, I have both nextcloud and tailscale running. I can access truenas using tailscale from external network. However, I cannot connect to nextcloud. From what I read, nextcloud would need trusted domain to be setup for the 100.x.x.x address range that tailscale uses. However, I am unable to find the Nextcloud config UI to set it up. Your help is really appreciated.
New video dropping at 5pm today...took me WAY too long to figure it out, but I now have a full guide on External Nextcloud Access!
Thank you. everything worked except the certificate. If I add the truenas default certificates, I still get error that self signed certificates are not valid.
I’m still basing my head against a wall on certificates too, as soon as I figure that out I’ll do a quick video it for sure.

Love your videos, they have been a huge help in setting up my truenas. Could you make a video on how to connect nextcloud to a domain name? I connected it through tailscale but haven't had any luck using Nginx-Proxy-Manager.
I just registered a cheap domain going down a mail server rabbit hole…but I’ll put it on the list!
Thank you!

Hi Randy, I just installed truenas and nextcloud for the first time, before installing nextcloud I followed your method, I created a datasheet like you did, only I didn't change the permissions (I did change permission like yours several time at trial before, but got some error/warning message, so I decided not to change the permissions), after that I continued installing NextCloud with the settings like yours. after deployment is complete, the web portal cannot be accessed, what should I do?
I start it again from beginning and now works 😅
Next step, I want to make the nextcloud accesable online via cloudflare tunnel with free domain from clouDNS. Is that possible to do it with TrueNAS SCALE?
I have mine setup through Tailscale wireguard tunnel. Super easy! There is a small section in my really long video that hits on it.
@@Randyisanerd I have tried two cloudflare tunnel methods, and neither works, the tunnel may connected but still can't be accessed the nextcloud using the domain. very frustrating. I think I'll try like you. Which is better, tailscale or wireguard?
Tailscale is based off of wireguard protocol, you just need an “app” for each device, which isn’t bad at all. I’d recommend starting with Tailscale and seeing if it suited your needs. In 99% of mine it’s perfect.
Where i can find the default nextcloud username and password? Btw thanks for uploading this tutorial, really appreciate it man!
you get to define it, whatever you type in when creating the app will be saved for first launch! I just go generic and say "admin" plus a password
In Admin "Overview", I continue to get the error: "Your data directory and files are probably accessible from the internet. The .htaccess file is not working. It is strongly recommended that you configure your web server so that the data directory is no longer accessible, or move the data directory outside the web server document root."
All fixes on the internet (pre-2024) reference directories that I don't have for some reason (particularly /var/www/nextcloud), and I can't find an updated fix. Any suggestions? Whenever I change the slightest thing in config.php the app fails to deploy. Is everyone doing this through the TrueNAS shell? I cannot find a shell in the app.
I get it too. I believe it has to do with the self signed cert. as soon as I figure out these cloudflare certs I’ll post an update.
@@Randyisanerd looking forward to it👍
New video up! No SSL nags, and access from the internet through Cloudflare tunnel !!!!! But I do still get the above warning 😂
