The Queen's University Talk: The Rising Tide of Compelled Speech

  • I was invited to Queen's University March 5 to give the inaugural lecture/discussion of the Liberty Lecture series, funded by Faculty of Law alumnus, Gregory Piasetzki (LLB 1980).
Dr. Bruce Pardy (law.queensu.ca/faculty-resear...) and I discussed the increasingly frequent requirements for compelled speech that characterize the Canadian sociopolitical landscape.
The entire event was, in a word, surreal. Initial controversy over its acceptability rose to the point where the Dean of the Law School William Flanagan and Principal of Queen’s Daniel Woolf wrote missives in defence of free speech (the former: bit.ly/2EQJDm3; the latter: bit.ly/2tJB8VB). The Queen's University "Human Rights Office" posted a link to the Levana Gender Advocacy Centre and Education on Queer Issues Project "active support" efforts during this event at their “Trans-Positive and People of Colour Positive Chill-In” in Dunning Hall, room 11, where there was coloring pages, music, food, and discussion.
The 900 or so people who attended (who comported themselves admirably and thoughtfully throughout) were subject to a continual 90-minute barrage of noise generated by the protestors, who leaped up on the stained glass windows lining the hall and banged continually on them, breaking one. Inside, we could see shadowy figures dimly outlined through the colored glass. The outside doors were barricaded. One protestor was caught on film saying "Lock them in and burn it down." The din was substantial and ominous, although it is much attenuated in this video, due to the nature of the microphones used, which were designed to pick up speech close at hand.
The protestor who broke the window was arrested, but not before she bit a policeman, attempted to kick the back window out of a police cruiser, and was found to be in possession of a garrotte, a particularly brutal weapon with no defensive utility whatsoever (bit.ly/2HoTDAu). The man who cursed so profoundly and eloquently near the beginning of the lecture accosted me and my crew after the talk, and yelled and cursed and threatened at close quarters during our 200-yard walk from the venue to the parkade.
No one who was at this event will forget it.
Not good. Not good at all.

I grew up in the USSR. My great grandparents were stripped of their wealth by the communists and they died shortly after from a broken heart. They left my grandma to fend for herself and her 5 younger siblings in 1939.

I am severely disabled. U.S. Army. Tears welled when Peterson said we struggle up the hill, with our "crutches" (!!!), toward the City of God. That's what we must do! It is our duty. Others are watching - and many need inspiration, example, encouragement and hands-on real help. When I'm in the fight with another disabled and their family, I forget about my limitations because I'm too damned focused on what's at the top of that mountain. A pleasure to go to a source where honor, duty, integrity, guts, and ingenuity still mean something.

Campus security was outside blocking the front doors, along with a couple of officers (at some point). Why the police didn't do anything when people started banging on the side windows, I'm not entirely sure about, maybe they didn't even know it was happening, considering the mob out front. Or they probably didn't want to get targeted by the media for supporting "hate speech" and wimped out.

Now they opt out for "education", which provides no skills or the promise of a job at the end of that "education", debt they can't pay back, and anger when they realize how useless they are. What they do o get is brainwashing that makes them incapable of being functional, handling every day life, being accountable, and most important, incapable of happiness.

I just watched enough of this video - so far - to be totally embarrassed that Queen's University, in my home town, allowed this guest of theirs to be harassed to such an extent, and so persistently throughout the evening. As Dr Peterson said to this effect, "How disrespectful to attack an event that so many people put so much work and effort into; appalling." Total understatement of course, but as simple as that. How on earth did Queen's not know that this would happen. The MC actually mentioned the security staff as having put so much effort into the event. I'm sorry, but they should be sacked forthwith. Even after the protests began - and I've only watched a short snippet - there was no sign of security to any effect - imagine - in Belfast a shortage of effective security!!
I sincerely hope that no one I know even remotely took part in such a shameful attack. I can only imagine that the attackers are so afraid of those they disagree with that they simply have to descend into childish tantrums with their hands over their ears repeating, "No! Don't say that! No! Don't say that, it's not true, it can't be true! And if it is true I won't be able to handle it!"
I feel like I should say a lot more but words fail me as to the logic or the purpose.
PS - I take my hat off to the trans person in these comments who was courageous enough to say that Jordan Peterson was reasonable in his presentation - thank you - that's how we get things done! There is hope.

All of this shouting down and shutting down of open discourse is a clear example of fascism. As mentioned many, many times, the irony is entirely lost on these activists. Ugh, the ending was so infantile.

@@damian_ski Indicating that this behavior works in oppressing free speech does not make it less of infantile behavior. At the very least it is shameful. It is disgusting what is being presented around the country. Large groups of "adults", screaming loudly, shouting down the lecturers and pounding on the windows, because they don't like what they hear and they do not want anyone else to hear . What I find the most disturbing is how these misbehaving juveniles cannot understand that they are practicing severe fascism.

Why cleaning your room is the first step to a life that is under your control. Parenting advice. Some tragic personal stories from peterson's life. This is so intense. I felt like I was watching a horror or suspense movie. Or 1984. The quiet, pensive, attentive audience sitting peacefully in the pews of this beautiful old building (church?) while the wisdom of JBP echoes through the rafters. Then suddenly, like drums in the deep, a knocking and banging slowly builds and builds and yet no one budges inside. Their determined stares fixed on the sound of reason in the room. Their yearning for truth not wavered by the possible doom outside. Shadows fill the stained glass windows and blurred figures move into view and eclipse the beauty of the ancient glass panes, as the hammering increases. The similarities of the protesters to “barbarians at the gate” or the “subdue the free thinkers” as in 1984, Equilibrium, or that Mac computer ad, or even metaphor of mindless zombies banging on the door is filled with irony as they shout “lock them in, burn it down.” This is a lecture that should be shown in schools to educate future generations. Indescribably important and metaphorical. Amazing job everyone inside. Clean your room. Speak the Truth. Slay the Dragon. Save your Father. Bring home the Treasure. ❤️

People like Jordan Peterson do not come along very often, not all will agree with him but we should still listen and open our selfish minds to the possibility that we might be wrong about some of our assumptions, not only about him but about our society and the individual freedoms we should not try and strip each other of.

I noticed that immediately because I used to teach college classes. And let me tell you, what he is doing, doing his presentations with no notes is only a testament to his superior intellect and ability to make sound value judgements. Doing a presentation, especially one drawing so heavily on scholarly endeavors is difficult. You have to know your material really well, which entails remembering the most relevant material that the presentation or conversation calls for, be able to choose from among the many that your mind offers up, and last be able to present it in the right words for your audience. So you need to remember, choose, present. So, he is doing it over and over throughout any given talk like a hundred times! I have the utmost greatest appreciation and thus respect for Dr. Peterson.

I'll bring you facts and logic, don't let it hurt your feelings: Jordan Peterson is an uber status quo, pro capitalist, who believes no axioms are possible without God, in Jungian pseudoscience, who thinks "intellectuals have been perverted", who's an in-the-closet Christian, who hangs out with climate deniers and denies global warming, who loves retweeting White Supremacists (and debunked global warming blogs), who thinks all postmodernism and taxonomy is a Marxist conspiracy, who can't handle taxonomy itself (too much chaos! Must retreat to simpler times!), who believes in cultural Marxism (an old antisemitic con), who repeatedly courts the alt right and Trumpites, who "struggles to find things of value in Islam" which is a "naturally warlike religion and whom feminists defend because they subconciously want to be dominated by men", who won't touch the fact that contemporary neocolonialism (oft waged by hyper Christians) is deliberately thwarting secularism in Middle Eastern nations by arming and funding islamo fascists and proxy terrorist groups (all for private profit), who thinks marriage should be kept sanctified from gays, and that sex should be enshrined in marriage (outside of marriage women will get raped), who misunderstands the Pareto law in an attempt to "naturalize" exploitation and poverty, who has a wrong and cartoonishly simple understanding of history and economics, who has no understanding of how money is created under capitalism, who can't tell the difference between John Wheeler's Participatory Anthropic Principle and the Copenhagen interpretation of quantum mechanics, who got famous for overreacting to a law which wasn't a law, who echoes the hysteria of trans-medicalist groups, criticises "poor methodology" while belonging to a field which epitomizes it, who would "oppose gay marriage if its what leftists want", who can't handle any contemporary findings in neuroscience or with regards to hard free will, and who behaves like a hilariously cranky old Republican or traditionalist.

I love the way he said he wasn’t sure he was right, but he wouldn’t let someone get in the way of him figuring out what was right. He’s defending independence and freedom of thought and speech to promote mental resilience and strength not just in his life, or your life or the lives of the people who oppose him, but in everyone’s lives. What a worthwhile occupation. It linked straight in to what he was saying about treating yourself with respect and thereby realising that all people matter in the same way that you do. Every Top 2000 corporation in North America have a diversity departments that actively seek to hire people that are not white males (the pure definition of legal racism) and diversity purchasing departments (meaning they actively buy and support black, minority, LGBT companies first and receive bigger bonuses for doing so). In addition if you work at any company you will go through sexual harassment training which sounds forthright in its theory but when you get into it you will find that going to lunch with 2 male friends is sexual harassment and sexism because you didn’t invite a female colleague....and you may have discussed something at lunch work related that excluded her, or a gay person, effectively instilling your white male privildge. In addition you will be given sensitivity training, explaining to you that it literally doesn’t matter what you say, someone has the right to be offended by it and you will face repurcussions for it if they raise a complaint to HR.
Be smart you’re in for a massive ride my friend.

Oh he's discussing something that's vaguely related to transgender rights because of bill c-16?! Then it must be he doesn't care about transgender people, and neither do any of his followers! So it's either black or its white, there's no chance that he's discussing something in the middle somewhere. And if it triggers their emotions or challenges their virtue signalling, then it's automatically evil!! That's the logical fallacy of radical leftism in a nutshell, they judge the truthfulness of something by their initial emotional reaction to it. So they're a SLAVE to their emotions, they won't even investigate whether something is true or not or what shade of grey it might be, pitiful way to live really.

I think that is because his views are, at this very moment in time, really speaking to people in that group the most. but that doesn't mean that it doesn't speak to other types of people aswell, maybe not as strongly but nevertheless it does.
that white male audience assumption is also brought into focus by the fact that he fights against the so called SJW movement, which is known to state that white males should shut up and stand back, that's one of their core ideologies, that while males and their ideas should be ignored in favor of every other group.
that's why I think that this idea exists, that he only has white male followers. and that also just shows once again that these people are bigots and they don't even realise it, or they have a very twisted definition of that term.
they group up people and act like all of the people in a group are the same. a disgusting thought but in their twisted minds it is just and caring.
they think all transgender people are the same and are baffled by the thought of some of them supporting Peterson's ideas... I bet they would be shocked that you, an Asian woman does too, because to them all asian women are one group, and as a group you should resent his views.
back in the day we called that racism or bigotry, now they redefined these words so they don't fall under these terms, when in reality they do. and then they tried to force the public to accept their new definition of these words so they can be the good guy

I've been a lifelong democrat having come of age in the Kennedy era. I've never had deep involvement or interest in politics except to notice that my life generally got better when a Democrat was in office, underscored by the shady characters of Nixon, Reagan, Bush Jr. and of course the latest Republican installment in the U.S. All of that said, I've followed the endless so called liberal conversations and media since 2016 and have experienced no small amount of resistance to being considered a liberal and nothing more, as if I've personally signed off on things I do not agree with at all. Watching and listening to Jordan Peterson has been my first introduction to the opinions of someone from the other side of the proverbial fence who speaks with deep intelligence and such breadth of knowledge on so many things. It's been so thought provoking to hear his views on all things, including this issue of mandated speech - and his thoughts on gender. All of that said, and to my point on this issue, I've been increasingly mystified by the enormous and relatively sudden heat on the politics of gender coming from so many circles. How did that happen? I've wondered why the furor over what is actually a very small segment of the population. It took decades for even some recognition of gay marriage and then suddenly, it seems, we're starting to legislate the use of words to address gender so as to not hurt feelings. Who or what is driving this? Seemed to me there HAD to be a monied force behind the push for the fantastic blurring of genders and sex. Nobody ever mandated calling women Ms. instead of Miss. Why not? Didn't single women get their feelings hurt when called "Miss"? Even though I reject most conspiracies, "just because you're paranoid, doesn't mean there's no one out to get you." I think it is pretty clear that there are forces who would be thrilled beyond means to bring down the big dogs of democracy on the planet, and those forces have money and access to nefarious means. There are many avenues to stoke radicalism the grooming process is pretty simple if one understands even a smattering of psychology. This talk and especially the last few minutes showing the crowd outside is a chilling example of how radicalized the extreme left is; they are not even responding to what he has said about mandating speech, vs. their imagined attack on genderism et al. Jordan Peterson's ideas give me hope and validates a lot of my secret, silenced thinking.

Not to mention that Queens student that hit the police horse. That school needs to be shut down asap they are turning out very poorly educated students especially the medical school it's complete garbage now.

Aren't we lucky to have JP to speak up for the rest of us, in ways that we could not manage ourselves.
