How to: Alice in Wonderland Dishes DIY

- I'm on a mixed pattern kick these days and decided to make some Alice In Wonderland dishes (inspired by MacKenzie-Childs) to match my chair from last week. I used Americana Gloss Enamels which are dishwasher safe! Just cure them in the oven and your dishes will last forever!
You'll need:
Americana Gloss Enamels (www.DecoArt.com)
Glass plates and wine glasses
Paintbrushes
Gold Krylon paint pen (amzn.to/1fxaviB)

This is a neat project to do with the kids too. They can make their own plates and glasses. There really is no messing up when doing this. It's fun!

I haven't, but I'm positive the gloss enamels would work on ceramics, too.

Love. How did you paint the little flowers on the wine glass that was on the table? Do you have any ideas on how to give an Alice in Wonderland feel to a patio swing. It's metal one but the seat area is fabric. I know I can paint the metal. How could change seat part? Hhhmmm.

I think it would be a good idea to draw the grid on a round paper and tape it to the plate. Then you don't have to draw a new grid for every plate you make. The plate with just black and white is my favorite. =D

can clear plastic be used instead of glass? Just glue another clear plate under it instead of baking? The Dollar store has them.
That just might work. Make sure the glue doesn't corrode the paint! Do a small test on similar materials first.

Would it be possible to decorate dishes with stamps?? :)
That's a good question.....I'm thinking yes. You could use paint on your stamp and then carefully stamp the glass. Let it dry and then bake. Be careful though because stamping on slick surfaces is hard and the stamps tend to slip. That's the only obstacle I've found. That said you could always wipe it off and stamp again until you get it just right. :)

Hey Mark, I have been making napkins and teapot cozies and covering an ottoman, and frames. Because I didn't want to do all the painting I used fabrics for edging and ribbon and duck tape for as many surfaces as I could. I have bought paint for the frames. I haven't started doing the paint because it keeps raining. I like what you have done.

Hi Mark, can you do a video on countertops, and how to paint them creatively. I've yet to come across a great idea for countertop resurfacing using paint that can stand up to wear and tear that a counter top endures. Any ideas?

An oldie but a goodie!
I saw something like this being done with dishes but they were ceramic not glass. And they were being done with sharpies and then baked for perminency . But I love the painted look as well tfs
I tried the sharpie and it worked, but to be honest, I prefer the Glass Paint Pens from DecoArt and the Gloss Enamels. They just work better and are specifically for glass and ceramic. Thanks for the comment kendra!

They are glass plates and you can eat off of them because you paint on the underside. Plus they are dishwasher safe.

Is this safe to drink from after cured in oven?
You want to make sure that the paint isn't near your mouth. Most paint has latex in it and some people (very few actually) have latex allergies which is why glass paint is never food safe. I keep my designs away from where the lips touch AND I only paint on the underside of the glass.

I need your help, I am getting some old leather chair and couch. I need to put fabric over them or paint them, what do you suggest. A video would be great!
I think it depends on your decor. Paint would be super fun if they're in good shape! You could use Patent Leather paint by DecoArt.
Do you know of some medium that would be permanent on a plastic surface, like the outside of a water bottle?
Americana Multi Surface Paint would work very well. If you're looking for spray paint, you would want to use Krylon Fusion specifically for plastics.

Yes, because all of the painting is done on the back of the plate. The top is just glass.

Love those dishes and wine glass designs! Did you wait until each coat dried before painting the next design (i.e., the black and white squares)?
It dries pretty quickly so it was easy. I let them dry about 45 minutes before I baked them.

Yes, because you're painting on the back of the glass dish. There isn't paint on the front.
