    Your channel showed up in my feed. I watched your video on sleep issues and then saw this video. I am in my late 50's and noticed my nails had ridges like a Ruffles potato chip. I consulted Dr. Google and it said this was common for old people 🙁. I did some research and keto people were getting improvement with grass fed beef liver. So I gave it a try. I noticed the nails were improving but also noticed my skin was getting a shiny, more youthful look. So I increased to 1 lb a week and basically a red meat heavy keto diet. I then noticed wrinkles disappearing, the hair thickening and turning brown and the skin going from chalky and ashen to more youthful looking. The changes aren't just cosmetic. My blood pressure has normalized, body comp improved and endurance/lung capacity improving. I didn't think all these things could regenerate? I am commonly mistaken for someone in their 30's. When I started, if I held my thumb against my index finger, I had 4 folds of skin where loose skin overlapped. Now, no folds, and a few thin wrinkles. I suspect I'll be 100% wrinkle free within a month and now my skin glows. I don't remember this happening even in youth. I can also tan without sunscreen and never seem to burn. I also eat beef heart and kidney occasionally. Just wanted to tell someone because the results are truly amazing. Oh and ridges on fingernails 100% gone and they are shiny too.

      About a week ago, I was in a small grocery store in a small town during the day. I heard what I assume were a mother and daughter talking. The daughter said, "well he's nice look at". So I started looking around the store to see who they were talking about. I then realized I was the only man in the store. I turned to see them both smiling. An awkward thanks was all I could manage. Even in youth, I was the smart guy or the funny guy but not the handsome guy! But this diet seems to have changed that. Who knew?

    I agree with everything you said but retinoids are amazing I started with them before chemical exfoliation and saw amazing results, I then added chemical exfoliants saw that even more results (using them on separate days), then bakuchiol along with retinoids amped up the results, I could never go back

    • @LifeDIY
      @LifeDIY  3 місяці тому +2

      Thanks for sharing this! I agree that you can amp up the results when carefully combining the retinoids and other exfoliants, if the skin can handle it! :) What kind of retinoids are you using? Any product recommendations? I also like backuchiol. I have more of an issue with the way people (esp dermatologists) are overly hyping and overly promoting tretinoin, the prescription version, without getting into details of why and what studies have shown. I'll get more in depth about this in another video though and then I think it'll make more sense as to where I'm coming from. :) I didn't clarify that well at all in this video.

      I no longer use tretinoin because it’s difficult to use it with glycolic acid, so I am currently using cos de baha retinol at 2.5%, I also use cos de baha bakuchiol 2%. I also use retinaldehyde 0.1 by naturium and 0.2 by the ordinary, I use them interchangeably and use a 5% glycolic acid toner. When I use 20% glycolic acid peeling pad, I’ll use retinaldehyde 0.1 and bakuchiol as well but the retinol is very irritating to use along the 20% glycolic acid. Everyone skin is different so some may not agree with my method but it works for me to get the maximum benefits. In addition to all of that I do add peptide serums as well and of course sunscreen everyday

    Hi Holly! I love your videos, you're so informative and beautiful. How is your experience with minoxidil going? I am looking to try it but I'm scared of growing facial hair. I'm 27 and lost a good amount of hair during COVID- I've heard this is a common thing. I can see you are starting to get new growth in your hairline which is what I'm after!

    I agree, the filler and plastic surgery have really gotten out of hand. I see more and more people looking incredibly, um, strange. To put it nicely. I think it’s really an external side effect of the escalating mental illness.

      @LifeDIY  4 місяці тому +5

      I totally agree. There are some creators (on UA-cam and IG) that I'm subscribed to and haven't seen their content in a while. So I recently saw some of their content and it's unbelievable how unrecognizable they are - not just from what they used to look like, but they almost don't look human anymore. I'm not trying to be rude but it's so bizarre how they continue to get more extreme with their looks. I think they must like the attention because it makes them stand out, but unfortunately it is not in a good way. If the work is unnoticeable or very natural it would probably just enhance their looks in a great way.

    Hi Holly, always like to see when you've put a new video out :) The Good Molecules products seem very affordable; I'll have to check and se if they're available in Canada. Wondering what you use as a moisturiser? My skin is incredibly dry and it's so hard to find something affordable that actually does moisturise. Thanks for all your tips!

    • @LifeDIY
      @LifeDIY  4 місяці тому +1

      Thank you so much, Maureen! 🙏 I hope the Good Molecules products are available in Canada for you too. I also have very, very dry skin. There are a lot of options for our really dry skin, but it depends on what kind of ingredients you like. For the most affordable, very hydrating product - I like Cetaphil's Moisturizing cream amzn.to/3uDPve6. You can get a big tub of it at a good price. It is so hydrating, but I still like to apply other products to my skin first (like a serum and oil). This one is $15/20 ounces which is lot of product. That's a pretty rich and thick product and I love using it on my hands too. If you want something with ingredients that are a even better for your skin, then I also love the Illiyoon Lotion (Korean brand) amzn.to/48nKZyh and it's $20/12 ounces. They sell another one that's smaller but that one is not hydrating enough for me. This has a different texture than the Cetaphil one and is more like a gel moisturizer, if you've ever used one. So, it's hydrating but not as rich and creamy as the Cetaphil. It contains ceramides, glycerin, shea butter - just really nice ingredients for the skin, plus no fragrance or mineral oils. Besides these, I have a couple other face creams that I've loved in the past but they are so pricey that I won't buy them. I'm planning on making some of my own skincare products at home coming up and I specifically want to make a face cream. Until then, I think these are two good options and I am going to repurchase the Illiyoon today. :)

      I have insanely dry skin as well. I have been buying one pricy moisturizer after another and I was always disappointed. Finally out of desperation, I slathered the Cerave Diabetic body lotion on my face. It’s an incredible moisturizer that gives noticeable results on my body and it worked great on my face. I do get some clogged pores if I use it every day, so I stick with every other day. It’s great for the body as well. It’s really the only drugstore moisturizer that has worked for my insanely dry skin. Also taking a good quality fish oil pill has helped with dry skin. I’m thinking of taking a ceramide supplement as well.

      Wow, thanks for sharing this! It looks like a hidden gem. It has such great ingredients, especially with the ceramides being high up on the list. Plus, glycerin instead of mineral oil, urea, etc. and it's about $9. Awesome!

    • @funeats8201
      @funeats8201 4 місяці тому

      @@LifeDIYYou’re so welcome. It definitely is a hidden gem and I never hear anyone talk about it. With most creams, my skin just soaks them up and then it feels like I never put cream on. That one actually hydrates my skin for a full 24 hrs.
      Hope you like it as much as I do. It’s really nice for dry feet too. The only problem is that a little does not go a long way. When I’m using it regularly on my body, I go through a tube pretty quickly. Wish they sold a larger value size but they don’t.

Have you tried the Naturium brand? Another good, budget-friendly line with some excellent products. I may also try to Cetaphil; I've tried their cleanser but nothing else. Thanks again.

    Are there any chemical peels you could recommend that have minimal downtime? For example, apply the peel Friday after work, and then the skin peels off over the weekend and then you look normal by Monday morning? So about 3 days downtime max? I already use glycolic acid 10% almost daily and salicylic acid 2% occasionally if I have a break out, but I'm looking for something a bit stronger for a weekend peel if there's anything like that that exists? Do you know of anything that would be suitable for that scenario
    edit:
    Actually I think the 15% salicylic acid you recommend in the video might be what I'm looking for. I will try that

    Awesome video! I am really interested in trying the Dr. Pen. Is the amazon seller you listed an authorized one? How come the price is lower than the ones sold on the Dr.Pen website?

    • @LifeDIY
      @LifeDIY  4 місяці тому +1

      Thank you so much! So, I just checked www.drpenusa.com to see their current price on the A6S and to be totally honest, they're just over-charging. It's absolutely insane that they're selling it for $250. All of these pens are made in the same place in China. So, for me I try to find a seller who I can trust, or one that has a refund/return policy in place just in case anything goes wrong. So for that reason, Amazon is a good option. There may be some other sites you can get it from as well. I also think that DrPenUSA is a good option as they have good customer support, except the price is ridiculously high. And, there really aren't any "authorized" sellers. There may be some people/companies who say they are, but really all these pens come from the same factory. I would just avoid buying a generic non-Dr. Pen product as I did this years ago and it was around $65 and it was not good and didn't work as well as the Dr. Pens.

  • @funeats8201
    @funeats8201 4 місяці тому

    I’m trying to get rid of some freckles/liver spots. I was thinking of starting microneedling. Have you tried pairing microneedling with any actives for fading spots? Thanks in advance for any opinions or advice. These spots are really driving me nuts.

    • @LifeDIY
      @LifeDIY  4 місяці тому +1

      That is a great question! I haven't used any other actives when microneedling, but according to research, this is an effective way to treat pigmentation issues. When you are microneedling with an active ingredient, there is a small risk of a granuloma, but most of those have occurred when people have used vitamin C serums with microneedling. Luckily that is a rare occurence (www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC9178993/). So, in an effort to be very cautious, I've always just used hyaluronic acid when needling, but sometimes 6-12 hours later I will then apply another active ingredient & I think it absorbs a lot better than normal, even though I've waited hours later. If you want to be safe, yet still get the benefits of the ingredients and greatly improve their absorption, you could nanoneedle and then apply the serums. If you don't have a nano needling cartridge, you could use a much lower depth of something less than 0.25mm with a normal microneedling cartridge.
      This research talks about methods to address pigmentation issues. It mentions that liposomal formulations can be very effective (but these products are often expensive). I've also read research stating that when you're microneedling, you then don't need liposomal products because you are greatly improving the absorption of the ingredients you're applying (same for nanoneedling, but it doesn't get as deep into the skin). Hope it helps!
      Here are some details from that research paper:
      -Topical liposome-encapsulated aloe vera showed improvement in melasma patients.
      -Topical vitamin C nanosome was found to be better than glycolic acid peel in improving hyperpigmentation
      -Kojic monooleate nanoemulsion indicated inhibition of tyrosinase.
      -Azelaic acid and hyaluronic acid nanoemulsion demonstrated significant tyrosinase inhibition and good skin permeation.
      -Natural compounds like aloesin, hesperidin, ellagic acid, and Pycnogenol have shown promise in inhibiting melanogenesis.
      -Polypodium leucotomos extract demonstrated a decrease in pigmentation response and UV-induced damage.
      *-Microneedling enhances transdermal delivery of depigmenting agents.
      -Combined with various serums or creams, microneedling shows significant improvement in hyperpigmentation disorders.
      -Promising results are observed in melasma, acne pigmentation scars, and other hyperpigmentation conditions.*

      Hey Bill - thank you! And, I am so happy to hear that you're going to be getting some tallow-based skincare from a subscriber. People are awesome! You know what's funny is that I just made a "body butter" created with grass-fed homemade beef tallow + avocado oil + a little coconut oil. I next want to make a body lotion, which would have a lighter texture than the body butter. I noticed more people selling these types of produdcts on Etsy.
      I didn't have any essential oils at the time when I made the body butter, so it has a bit of a meat smell, though it's subtle. The texture is like marshmallow fluff and my cats want it! I am really getting into making more products too and also some lip products. Tallow is a great ingredient in skincare from my experiences. I also cannot believe you're 56, Bill. I really thought you might have been 40-ish. So hopefully these products + your healthy living will bring that down to 30! :))

      I absolutely love making homemade health products as well.. i’ve been making my own heart tonic for years. Just grain alcohol, the highest quality organic fresh ground cayenne pepper, and hawthorn berrys. I also love making my own lip balms , I’ve always used beeswax and olive oil as a base, then experimented with adding different things to see what works best. I also love making healing balms from fresh birch bark and birch buds and making an infused oil with olive oil, and then adding beeswax to make the balm. I’ve never thought of trying tallow in place of the beeswax so I’m excited to get back into making my own homemade stuff and trying that 😁

    • @LifeDIY
      @LifeDIY  4 місяці тому +1

      That is so awesome to hear, Bill. That tonic sounds interesting! I'd never heard of that before. I used to make elderberry and give it to people when I was at school/college years ago. It looked like like a little potion bottle ... the stuff works so well. That's great you're making lip balms too. I am so excited to make more because I messed up my last batch. I highly recommend trying tallow instead of beeswax, though I love that stuff too. And, pure lanolin is another incredible ingredient for lip products - it's my favorite, but it depends on the texture you're going for. The healing balms sound amazing with birch bark. Maybe someday you'll be selling your own line of products. You're really making me want to try a new batch of lip products today. :)

    I’ve done the 15% salicylic acid peel just on my forehead twice now. I would love to see what you’re doing with it. I can’t decide if I should stick to that or alternate with the 30% glycolic. I have a lot of closed comedomes on my forehead but also need to address hyperpigmentation and aging/loss of laxity.

    • @LifeDIY
      @LifeDIY  4 місяці тому +1

      If you want better results from it, you can layer it. You're technically supposed to apply the Salicylic acid first and then something else like Glycolic acid. I did this the last time I did a treatment and strangely, I didn't get the same amazing results as the times before. The times before that, I applied Lactic Acid, then Glycolic, then salicylic. My initial plan was to spot treat with the salicylic, but then I applied it to my whole face instead, and got some great results. I applied it last because I thought it would be quite strong and maybe irritating or painful. It's strange because Salicylic is normally applied first as it cuts through any skin oils, then you can use the other ones. I will continue to test it out. You could try the Glycolic + Salicylic to see if it helps!

      Lately I only do microneedling every few months. I could do it more often, but tend to get busy with life and sometimes forget. Lately for peels, I have been doing them a couple times a month (the layered salicylic peel + lactic + glycolic acid), although I haven't always done them this often. I do regularly exfoliate my skin though through gentler products that contain glycolic acid (like the toners or masks).

      That's so good to hear! That's good you started with 0.25mm. I know that tight feeling. For many people their skin will become a bit dry over the next 4 days after a treatment and sometimes the skin looks worse at first (kind of ruddy or a slight change in skin tone). Then when that passes, your skin will look nice and new and refreshed! I used to have that on day 10. :)

    My question is about the HA you use. And a ton of people recommend this exact product when they microneedle. But my understanding is that we are supposed to use large molecule HA for this. And this product (like nearly every HA product) contains "Sodium Hyaluronate." I thought this was the smaller HA molecule??
    The only HA i can find that doesn't list Sodium Hyaluronate in the ingredients is by a different peel company named Dermalure. And its pretty expensive!

      Thank you so much for bringing this up about the HA. I have looked into the research too, so I do know what you're talking about regarding the molecular weights and I agree with you. I think I fell into the trap of using this particular product because years ago it was so highly recommended by Penny Smith (this is where it became so popular) the main reason I stuck with it was due to it being the most pure with the fewest ingredients. I kind of forgot about the molecular weight over the years. :( That's horrible if there are no other options selling high molecular weight HA with limited ingredients. I just checked out the Dermalure product - thanks for sharing that. If there are no good, affordable options in the market, I am going to look into making something. Thank you for bringing this up!

    • @LifeDIY
      @LifeDIY  4 місяці тому +1

      Great question!
      When I first started getting into skincare years ago, I become obsessed with a product from Mizon - their Snail Recovery Gel (it's still sold on Amazon). It seems like it really helped the appearance and hydration of my skin. Then I forgot about it over the years. I recently got the Cosrx snail mucin. The Mizon one also includes a lot of peptides in the ingredients. The Cosrx one also has some other great ingredients too. I'm currently trying these products out again to see if I notice anything when using them. I'd like to create a website post or video on this in the future. I have read reviews of people who have acne and acne scarring/pigmentation issues and they said those things improved from the snail serums.
      There is some research on it and its benefits for the skin. Here is a systematic review on that: www.jintegrativederm.org/article/88379-snails-and-skin-a-systematic-review-on-the-effects-of-snail-based-products-on-skin-health and they looked at 10 clinical studies. They said: Studies demonstrated that SCA (snail secretion filtrate) and IFC-CAF (snail egg extracts) improved signs of skin aging, increased skin hydration, decreased transepidermal water loss (TEWL), exhibited antimicrobial activity, and improved healing after radiation therapy and fractional laser treatment.

    Wait a minute, no more tretinoin or retinol for you??? Please share what you found out and why you stopped.

    • @LifeDIY
      @LifeDIY  4 місяці тому +3

      I'm not really against retinols, if they're helping with skin turnover and the skin's appearance. I like that they're milder. But, I need to do more research on them, as I know a lot more about Tretinoin. I have tried using Tretinoin for months at a time, but had side effects almost non-stop and didn't notice any other results. But, I know some people love how their skin looks and feels when using Tretinoin.
      I really dislike how these doctors on UA-cam promote it in a way that is so overly hyped, and almost none of them quote any solid, substantial research. They're repeated what others have said, and we hear the same words over and over again about how it's the "gold standard."
      I plan to do a full, longer video on Tretinoin. I had a research scientist go through the ENTIRE history of it until now. Some of the history will shock people also. I'll try to share a little bit of it here, but there's so much more to it! I have noticed that most of the studies I've looked into are funded by the largest sellers of these products. It's also important to note that many dermatologists and other doctors get paid and lots of monetary gifts from these companies.
      In 1995, topical tretinoin was approved by the FDA for the palliation of fine wrinkles, mottled hyperpigmentation, and tactile roughness of facial photodamage (Baldwin et al., 2013). This approval was based off of 2 very small (very questionable) studies - one in 1986 (Dr. Kilgman experimenting on prisoners - treated a total of 24) and one in 1988 (They started with 40 patients but 10 withdrew due to severe dermatitis.) The prison experiments also involved using dioxin and agent orange on prisoners, but that's a separate topic. The 1986 study showed some histological changes in the skin, enough to warrant more research. But, there were numerous issues with his study and the 1988 one. For example, the 1988 study claimed that patients experienced great improvements in fine wrinkling, coarse wrinkling, sallowness, roughness. They started with 40 patients but 10 withdrew due to severe dermatitis. 92% of patients experienced "retinoid dermatitis" that lasted from two weeks to three months. The study was partially funded/sponsored by two companies, one of which became one of the LARGEST sellers of tretinoin. Their methods for evaluating this were questioned by numerous experts and dermatologists at the time - who greatly refuted the findings of this study.
      1988: Weiss et al. Randomized, double-blind, vehicle-controlled trial of 30 patients (average age 50).
      -Study could not be truly blinded because of the reaction to tretinoin.
      -No protocol to avoid cross-contamination of treatment area.
      -11 patients were given an additional cream to reduce irritation, which introduces another variable they did not account for.
      -The photographs used did not have accurate, consistent lighting.
      -The study was sponsored and funded in part by Ortho Pharmaceutical Corp, Raritan, NJ, and by the Babcock Dermatologie Endowment, Ann Arbor, Mic. (they sell Retin-A).
      -Numerous dermatologists contested the study and complained, pointing out issues or inconsistencies. Here is an excerpt from one:
      Milton R. Okun, MD
      Dermatopathology Foundation Canton, Mass Boston University School of Medicine
      “The article by Weiss et al1 does not present convincing evidence that application of topical tretinoin improves photoaged skin, even within the context of the small number of patients studied and the short follow-up period.”
      The photographs show significant differences in lighting, contrast, and overall color tone, which could obscure the true effects of treatment with tretinoin.
      In the 1988 study, there are more details about the inflammatory process that the users experienced and how it changed over the weeks. Some experts believe that the decrease in wrinkling was due to the swelling and inflammation or irritation. The results were more pronounced on the arms, which have less deep wrinkles. They should have not have studied the arms and face and lumped the results together.
      Conclusions based off weak evidence -
      Most of the earlier studies are referenced in later papers as firm conclusions, and do not mention the weaknesses in the research that even the authors cover if their discussions. Some newer studies don’t use a control, and only compare to tretinoin because it is considered the “gold standard.” This is bad practice, especially since the tretinoin reaction makes the data difficult.
      I find it concerning that the approval of this product to treat wrinkles was based off of these two studies. It reveals a lot about the FDA and pharmaceutical companies. I do need to review the research that was done later, and I will share that in a video too. From what I've seen though, most of the studies (even later ones) are very small, they're using such different product formulations, they're usually funded by the company, and there are still many study inconsistencies like the first two studies - and major financial conflicts of interest, which many of them fail to disclose.

      I didn't mean to imply there were no studies on it. But, specifically the two studies that were used to approve Tretinoin as a prescription to treat wrinkles -those were weak studies with a lot of issues. I will share some of this here if you're interested. I paid a research scientist to dig into the entire history of it. And, if it is working for you - then I am so happy to hear it. I am not opposed to it, and I am willing to give it a try again in the future. But, my biggest issue is the way doctors promote it and hype it up - without sharing the full story or without being informed about the studies.

    The bizarre thing is that you apparently do a fair bit of research yet you still ended up on the carnivore diet. It has been well researched that this diet is awful for maintenance of good health and the antioxidant load is low, iron load is high, which means you will experience accelerated aging in every aspect. I know most vegans/vegetarians look like garbage io (because they eat ridiculous amounts of processed goods, etc.) but the diet is empirically healthier when whole foods are consumed. You dontnhave to be fully vegan/vegetarian, but cutting out all plant foods is so detrimental to your health and sensitized you to so many more things because of the narrowing of the gut microbiome. Anyway, looking forward to seeing a blog post on going back to eating a regular, healthy diet.

      I hope you have a great summer…It’s been wet and muddy here for ages, so I’m itching to get out and do stuff in nice weather.

      Thanks, Joe! Yeah I wish I would have mentioned that about diet, lifestyle and also hormones - those all play a part. I hope you have a great summer coming up too. This week our weather is supposed to get into the 40s, so I am excited. To me, that is summer at this point!

      Ah the beauty of relativity…I’m genuinely happy that you’re excited with temperatures in the 40’s. it’s in the low 50’s here, and I’m very unexcited with our sludgy underfoot mud, dampness, and a sky that always looks like it’s cloaked in a dull grey sheet.
      Talking of relativity and ‘age’. I once asked my 8 year old niece what age she thought was really really old…She replied 10. 😊
