2006?! The design holds up so good, even after all those years.
It still looks JUST right!
It's actually a design from 2001.
@@jackedrussell but the car was made 2006 so therefore the design is 2006
@@sco_obi No, that's not how it works. It's a design that came out in 2001, no changes to the design were made until the facelift in 2008. That makes this a 2001 design on a 2006 car.
@@jackedrussell Damn, thats even crazier. I really thought it was from the late 2000s, like 2008 at least.
Probably because the first time I saw one was in Need For Speed Shift 2009. :P
Ah the high revving of a Lotus.. sweet stuff
Yup, chassis is so so good, but that little screamer is one of the best things about the car!
It's a toyota-yamaha engine.
@@hiepphambui3941 he said that Yamaha designed it in the video. Didn’t think I needed to say it too. It was built by Toyota and used in Toyota cars so it’s fair to say it’s a Toyota motor.
But it don't go...
@@jrag1000 Maybe not on freeway in a straight line but at streets of willow, it definitely goes. I saw one lapping porsches and ferraris, obviously could be driver but man DID HE GO
whenever yamaha is involved it’s probably a fun motor
You bet it but the lotus is popular with handling stuff so i love both of these combination.
they also made Volvo's transversemounted V8.
Yamaha R1M
and usually it blows up
@@PLK123 yeah the audience usually blow up and lot of fan wants them
You did explain the VVTLI system correctly, that’s what VVL does. It switches to a more aggressive cam for high rpm. It is a similar system to Vtec though, because that’s what any vvt and vvl system does
Yeah, V-Tec is just Honda's name for VVT with lift
@@lecoureurdesbois86 Except that's i-VTEC. The original VTEC system found on D and B-series engines does not have VVT. Although i-VTEC on the K-series does.
It's basically Toyota's version of VTEC. It kicks in quite hard on these cars with them being so light, which isn't always a good thing, you don't want it mid corner.
@@nvl2691 Minor adjustment to your statement - VTEC does have Variable lift and timing, but it only has two choices, a LO cam profile and HIGH cam profile.
Interesting side note.. the VVC on the earlier Rover 1.8 Engined lotus's would adjust the cam throuout the entire rev range which resulted in an unusual flat torque curve all the way up to red line.
That engine sounds godly. Sounds like a sports bike but deeper. Love it!
Got the luck of having one in my garage, it's so much fun to drive it on mountain roads, and the sound even stock is great. It's not meant for top speed but this toy corners better than supercars
@R L from my experience they are like the others, there's almost no electronic so less problems from that. In terms on build quality you feel everything, which means the road under your butt or the squeaks the car makes, and the radio is kinda useless cause the engine covers everything. Not recommended as your daily but if you don't care as much is great
@R L Had two RUN X RSI's with same motor and gearbox. Both had oil pump issues and both had syncomesh problems from first to second to third. Great fun though.
Those are some of the coolest Manual windows I've seen
They look great, but I'd still have electric windows honestly.
This is my most watched UA-cam video ever I think, all these years later. I’ve just bought a 2005 lotus exige and I’m in love with it. Thanks for the inspiration
I own a 2005 Elise and I love it. I loved driving before I owned it, now I REALLY love driving. Mine has a BOE REV-400 Supercharger that puts it at 305hp and it can do 0-60 in 3-3.5 seconds. It's just insane. I've owned it since November 2020 and I've already put over 10k miles on it. Pure joy, elation, and love for raw driving.
Just my curiousity, Could we really use Lotus as daily drivers?
@@kvgbui565 I actually HAD to use mine as a daily between November and March because my daily had to have a new motor installed. The Elise does not like the rain or snow, but it's not like it just doesn't function, just not very well; drive slow, obviously. Even with mine being a performance beast, I can still get 30mpg with 91 octane fuel, although the 10 gallon tank limits your distance you can cover without having to refuel. The worst part of daily-ing her is when I need to do simple tasks - so anything that requires a lot of getting in and out of it starts to hurt, traffic is a killer due to it being a manual and pressing the clutch starts to wear down my left leg after 15-20 minutes of stopping and going, and overall space is lacking but it isn't bad if it's just you - I can fit all my stuff I need for my daily duties and I own a restaurant. The only other downside is cost of repairs and finding someone that would actually touch the car to work on it because most mechanics don't have a clue about it - most people don't have a clue about. I get "what is a Lotus?" as a question far too often, or, "who makes Lotus?" So make sure you have someone to work on it BEFORE you buy it - unless you're going to DIY the repairs.
Even after all of that, the drive to and from work is a smooth dream for me. Taking curves at higher speeds than normal cars can do, taking off on straight stretches, and when I have the top off I just wave my arms in the wind going 80-100. I don't see myself ever wanting anything else.
@@GothDeathrocker Oh, I can live with the majority of the disadvantages mentioned above, but I live in city which will definitely make driving a manual become a punishing experience as you said. Guess I should take a dct M2 instead
Btw thanks for sharing your interesting experience with me, it helps a lot.
I've got a 2006 one, the lower power spec than this even (which wasn't sold in the US). Loads of fun :D
I did use mine as a daily for months. It's ok if you don't need to carry much and your route is mostly quiet countryside roads. Not in winter when there is salt on the road. They are also quite loud so if you are doing long trips you'll need earplugs if you don't want to go deaf.
@@BlatentlyFakeName thank you so much ;)
Wow, I didn't know they sounded that good.
Ikr, WAY better than most turbo4s
You never played Need for Speed?! 😄🤪
I see Lotus, I click like!
Love the how the engine tone changes in the upper rev range, just amazing!
Good lord, what a beautiful sound that 2ZZ makes. Having driven this, though (and I see some others have already mentioned this), I'd be curious to see if you could get your hands on a properly sorted 2ZZ swapped MR-S to do a bit of a head-to-head comparison. See just how close it can come to the Elise.
I have to say though I like the sound that engine makes in the Celica and Corolla more pleasing. But that's personal preference, it's more screamy which can be a turnoff but you hear the individual bangs more than just a constant flow if that makes sense.
The all aluminium chassis, the grip level and the suspension would be the main differences between the two.
Full suspension mrs with a bit of aero and of course 2zz would be just as good as the Elise
@@hugoperez8265 a lot of elise people already do K swaps cuz apparently the engine is easier to get more power out of. Maybe it's a parts thing cuz just about everyone knows a civic type r and just about no one knows of the Corolla T sport
@@Aristocrafied K20 mrs swaps are very popular as well
Lotus is one of my favorite car manufacturers. Pure driving experience
Every other car adds all sorts of luxury goodies. This car? What can we take away? The bare minimum-add lightness and make it a go kart.
"Adding power makes you faster on the straights. Subtracting weight makes you faster everywhere."

Dang. I didn't think Tedward videos could get any more exiting, and yet they still did.
I’ll never forget my mother brought me home one of these as a toy car from the airport after she came back from a trip. I was like 6 years old, and to THIS DAY I’m still in love with this specific car. It has a very specific look that is hard to NOT recognize. Very funny that this is my first time actually seeing the inside of one
getting this engine in my MR2 Roadster / Spyder/ MR-S shortly and can't wait for the noise.
I bought a new MR2 in 2001, fun car but in 2002 I sold it for a Honda S2000 which still sits in my garage today...
Most pure Elise driving video. Thanks for letting the car talk for itself too!
What an amazing piece of kit. Looks amazing, sounds amazing, drives amazing.
I got to drive a lotus some day! Loving the videos by the way!
appreciate what you do, i smile every time i watch one of your videos!!
What a sick spec! 🔥
Man I remember when I used to think this car was super cool in NFS Carbon as a kid, it's kinda fallen off my radar since then but damn it sounds literally perfect (Yamaha working with Toyota always seems to end up that way) and is probably among the only TRUE "sports car" of this modern generation
Ahhh. Carbon and Prostreet
A driver's car. That's what I like. An awesome drive and an even more awesome sound. Thanks for your video.
Yamaha needs to collaborate with more automakers! Such a great sound!
Great video once again. I can imagine these POVs might have been inspired slightly by the principle of TST's One Takes and I'm about it - while I love canyon videos as much as the next guy its great to see cars driven on familiar MA roads and in real world traffic. Elise is also dope.
This will def go in my list of best Tedward POV drives, right with the turbo miata, such a kick-ass car, and those revs man...
You are livin' the dream sir. Lovely car, and lovely review!
omg im so in love with the interior design of the lotus elise cars generally speaking but also specifically this one, its so minimalist and retro feeling gosh i feel so cozy just looking at it, it doesn't try to look like a crazy spaceship or anything futuristic like alot of modern sports cars like lamborghini or mclarens try to do, even tho i admittedly like futuristic car designs alot but this elise design is so reminiscent of like an analog tv or analog radio design with the simple looking knobs and smooth solid color surfaces
Literally my dream car. Thank you so much for this video!
Good lord! The reving is insane! Sounds like im in the cockpit! Thank god i have earbuds in.
I loved editing this one because it sounds sooooo good
@@TedwardDrives ear candy!
I got to drive one of these a few months ago, it was an amazing car. I really giggled like a child the whole time
This guy says all the right things. Nice to see a bright mind in the car UA-cam world.
That sound is amazing.
what an awesome drivers car!
It took me awhile to even get past the start of this video. What a noise! An Exige shows up to my local autocross occasionally and everyone always stops to listen.
That first pull when the vid started sounded absolutely awesome
This is easily one of my favorite cars you've reviewed and now i want one :,)
2009 Lotus Exige in Persian blue or Chrome orange had been my dream car since they came out, but I would happily own one of these. What an amazing sensation these must be. You're practically wearing the car.
The audio and thoes exterior shots.
Amazing production quality!
Much appreciated!
I have a 2005 saffron yellow Elise. I have had it for about 8 years now. It's pretty fun I love it.
I remember seeing one of these at the Lotus dealer in GA back in the day. Love these. They also had a green one with stripes if I remember correctly.
Great overview. Love my Lotus not sure if anything in future will ever replace it.
This engine sounds so beautiful 😍
(The perfect sounding 4 banger imo)
Thank you for the front seat ride! One of the best I’ve seen, have to get me one. Orange, safety green, yellow, or red in that order lol.
Dude, I really can't explain how awesome your videos are. It does a really good job of making me feel like I'm right along for the ride.
Now I just need to figure out a way to afford one of these. LOL
Elise’s are “cheap”. The prices are starting to balloon a bit now that production is ceasing but they are still mostly low. Come check out the classifieds on Lotus talk forums!
The car is amazing omg !! I fell inlove
Greatest driver’s car. Period. Yes, there are faster. But the noises this makes, the handling, the whole experience, for 1/3rd the price (yes, these go for more than $30k avg now). COVID was nice to me and helped me find my perfect spec, even rarer than the one you drove ForcedFed Elise making 275hp. I get more looks in this thing than I did when I briefly owned a DeLorean. Thats saying a lot. Great vid!
I love the sound this engine makes.
The ultimate gem of a Tedward video would be him driving a Tommykaira ZZ-S and if possible, an ASL Garaiya through the Japanese mountain passes.
14:10 "It is as much fun as you can have with your clothes on". Perfect description
Built only 30 minutes from where I live in East Anglia. Amazing car.
Lovely car! Sounds almost like a Yamaha crotch rocket to me with the small engine and high revs 🚀
There were always a few of these in the parking lot at Intel in Hillsboro, Oregon...looks like fun 😄
I really like your recent videos with more "classic" cars
This is great, exactly what I would want for a afternoon on a sunny day!
Been waiting for this car!!
The Elise is such an adorable car.
I wonder if manufacturers will ever produce cars like this in the future. Like bands that break up and then come back for a reunion tour. 🙏🏻
Brett if you can convince someone to buy it Lotus said the tooling for the Elise and Exige is up for sale...
Back in the day I was buying a car
I came across a grey Elise and after I checked out I was a minute away from buying it. It was used but it's simplicity, the aluminum tub, the stick, and the rear reliable toyota (mr2 I believe) motor behind you. Beautiful reliable and super super scary fast WITH that classic lotus handling. I loved lotus so much back then I even owned a delorean which was the first car I ever restored. The guy I bought it from ( I was maybe 22) told me I'd never get it running. I soaked the injectors for 3 days and it started right up... However 😳 after restoration when I took that car on I95 (of course I tried to reach 88 mph) it started to shake so violently I became scared. Nothing was wrong with the steering mechanics or suspension either so it just became a showpiece in my garage. On the road? It was a stainless steel exotic coffin!
Really sounds like a VTEC engine! So funny you’re driving on all the roads I drive on too! I’m in Medford.
4 cylinder engines sound amazing. You can't change my mind.
used to. today's turbo 4's dont sound like these screamers and others like the older k20 hondas
@@basslover352 it rally goes down to how the exhaust layout goes. Cause a every turn in the pipes changes how it sounds.
@@mohammadabushanab1056 yes but give me an example of a modern turbo 4 that sounds like this. it doesn't exist. they don't rev to 8500 rpm anymore. turbos on their own mute exhausts and quiet them down.
@@basslover352 if you do a custom exhaust you can pretty much make it sound however you want
@@mohammadabushanab1056 There are good and bad sounding 4's to me. regardless of exhaust systems. a k20 from Honda sounds better and more exciting as it revs to it's redline than any other 4 I've heard recently come out, both modified or not.
Finally a reviewer used a word that maybe the one I've been looking for forever tactility. Now I understand what this means but I've been trying to describe this feeling where the car is talking to you and it's giving you some emotions. Many cars will not do this at all ones that are surprising BMWs Mercedes and many Toyotas don't do this at all. They're wonderful cars but they don't give any of this emotion back to the driver. Where an MR2 Toyota definitely does. Do you think tactility could be the elusive word that would describe this emotional feeling that the cars give you? I do understand what tactility means I'm talking about is this a term that's kicked around in the Auto industry to relate to this elusive emotion
you can actually HEAR the timing change. in my yaris t-sport you could feel it under half throttle but in this car you can actually hear it. Love these cars they're amazing on the B roads.
Today we have a toy between us. Not a toy for children or sensitive drivers, but a toy for really men....and women. This artefact is a serious toy, designed for pleasure and only pleasure. WoW. Thanks a lot for this gift for senses!!!!
Great video, I love my yellow lotus
I could listen to it forever! I could sleep listening to it
I absolutely love those wiper stalks
This car sounds so perfect
A downshifting burbling/backfiring Elise/Exige/Evora are so *salt bae chef's kiss*. Love that sound in my Evora, when it's not on limp mode LOL!
Haha oh no!! What goes wrong on the evora? Is it tuned?
@@TedwardDrives depends on the year but early years NA models have several issues, e.g. notorious for the clutch and master cylinders wearing out prematurely. Having said that the later/last years have nearly all the bugs worked out, but they aren’t perfect. My rear hatch for example wouldn’t open; somehow the latching mechanism became loose and could no longer pop the fastener. Lotus covered it under warranty but still. You can tell it’s a hand built car
@@Rick1984FL oh yeah that all sounds about right. Even the new Evora GT hatch is a pain and often doesn't open when prompted. Plus the brackets that hold the struts look like scrap metal haha
This is my FAVORITE sports car. I've loved this car since it came out. It's kind of like a souped up Miata. Yeah, much like what you said at the end. I believe cars will soon not be be though of like how we think of cars now, but rather "personal transportation appliances" They will be regarded just as your fridge or dishwasher might be.
I'm Lucky enough to have an Elise and an 08 S240 Exige. Both rev and sound SOOO good. I have recently put the remote reservoir Penskes on my Elise, and yes, the ride is so comfortable for what it is capable of!
Also, a man after my own heart.. upshifts on boring straights/traffic, a corner means DOWNSHIFT TIME!! lol
I love the motor I have a 03 matrix xrs with the same motor and it's fun even tho it's much heavier than a lotus of course but still fun and the sound of a 2zz specially when it hits lift is sick
Holy frick it sounds so amazing
This is a beautiful specimen
I actually saw one parked at ace hardware, it was awesome!
ahh, ahh yes. All the right noises
Those pops and crackles are REAL
BRILLIANT VIDEOS!!
Thanks Keith!
This car proves that acceleration and top speed isn't that important in a sports car. This looks fun as hell to drive
Holy shit this thing sounds amazing
For reference on age limits on owning an elise, my neighbour had a first gen elise until recently, was probably 80 when he stopped driving it, and just sold it at 90 after having it sat in his garage for 10 years. I think he sold it with around 8k miles on so was pretty special
Love me some souped up accord motors!! Sounds so good
The Elise is such an addictive car to drive. Lotus quality really took a giant leap forward with this car. That was always my main complaint about Lotus: the build quality and reliability was always iffy. Much like Alfa Romeo’s, you tolerated their flaws because they were such amazing cars to look at and to drive. I’ve driven several Lotus models because I work on European cars. The only Lotus I ever owned was a 1973 Europa John Player Special. The black and gold color scheme was stunning. It was the best handling car I’ve ever driven, especially fast on twisting roads. It was always breaking down, but it was easy to pinpoint the problem and fix it. I always traveled with a tool kit and a fire extinguisher in that car, luckily I never had an engine overheat or catch on fire. It got stolen and was never found. I was really bummed out, but at the same time I had to laugh thinking about all the problems the thieves would have with it.
Such a good car one of the best
I kept watching for cops for you. Great video.
This is my dream car, such a cool machine
i like the simplicity of it
THANK YOU!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Yeah that 2nd cam at 6200 rpm is fun. I almost spun out when I first got mine. It can surprise you if you let off the throttle mid corner and you start sliding 🤯
I like the exhaust sound.nice
Damn I love me some Lotus. I would love for you to test the "new" Ford Fiesta ST, but I think they are not sold in the US? I owned one and it was such a fun car to drive and not that expensive. It also sounded so amazing with that 1.5L 3-cylinder engine. But anyways, keep up the good work!
OMG it sounds like an old era superbike
I got surprised with the nice sound right at the beginning. Wow
A proper drivers car. More fun for sure than most of those Hyper and Supercars. Alone that it is a manual transmission you can drive heel&toe makes it so much more fun that anything that is currently available. And most of all you dont have to worry about any scratch.
Thats an excellent machine
Great now I want 1 of these and I just bought a ND2 MX5 3 months ago...
12:21 those downshifts from 6th to 5th to 4th to 3rd were glorious 🤤
TBH NFS Carbon Nostalgia brought me here !!!
