Actually, express lanes are an efficient way to allocate limited resources. However, I would recommend that you walk to work anyway because sitting in a metal box during your commute is extremely unhealthy.
NCDOT has made a mess of the freeways. Not time of day HOV like the west, not ramp meters. Just straight to tolls. They are trying to sell everyone that these help traffic instead of investing in ideas that work at no charge to the commuter.
Why not complete the 3 general purpose lanes all the way to Independence and around to Concord where it opens back up again to 3? That would make the entire loop 3 lanes all the way around and then add your toll lanes if you want for heavy congestion. Makes no sense what they are doing. You will still have the bottleneck and backup after they are done with this latest construction where it goes back down to 2 lanes at Providence. Unfortunately they've spent all this money rebuiling all the bridges between Providence to Independence Blvd. to only handle the additional toll lanes but not an extra general purpose lane. Very poor planning by NCDOT.

Just saw a horrible wreck..car or truck entangled in trees and other truck accross the lanes with a man hanging out the door unconscious w medics working on him. 3 firetru ks 7 police cars. Ive never scene anything this bad. It will be a mircleif anyone lives from this wreck. Pray!!😢😢
The state police need to start arresting all the reckless drivers zipping back and forth across multiple lanes of traffic and cutting off other drivers. There is almost ZERO state police presence on the I-485. 70 mph is fine, but the idiots driving on it make it dangerous. Also, all the old exits in South Charlotte when that was the first segment to open have on ramps that are way too short per today's highway design standards especially around Pineville. Most of the time the drivers are barely at 45 by the time they try to merge, which is partly bad driving but the lengths of the on-ramps is way too short.
