Bikes are like shoes, 1 size does not fit all riders, Jonas is a small human, he is probably the smallest cyclist on his team. So a teammates bike could be to big for him.
Like all the couch experts saying this is "panic", Vingegaard could have waited etc. In Chris Horner's video he says it was a close call for team TJV that could have lost them TDF. For Chris TJV "tactics were "spot on" and they did a "fantastic job". I'll take a pro's views for it. YMMV.
Vingegaard had a puncture IIRC. Then he took van Hooijdonk's bike, but that was too big for him, he's almost 20 cm taller. Then he took Kruijswijk's bike, but the team car was almost there, so he put that down to take his own spare bike.

Yeah I found this strange. Shouldn't pro cyclists bikes be fit to themselves, not to their teammates? So it would make sense to go instantly to the mechanic.
That's what made me scratch my head with Michael Rogers' 2002 TDU finish on a Fan's bike. I'm just a punter, but even when I was young my knees never forgave even slight changes in position.
They are. If you have a chance the domestique gets screwed and has to give up their bike. That's what they do. They do everything to ensure victory for the team. Chris Froome rode a bike that was WAY too small just to stay in yellow in 2016 after he crashed into his former teammate Richie Porte
It would take way longer for a mechanic to deal with. Most of these guys however are pretty good at adapting to teammates' bikes, and there's at least one incident where a rider borrowed a spectator's bike to get to the finish.
Sometimes the mechanics are held up or can’t get there for another minute. They don’t have a minute to wait. At some point the team car will catch up and give him his spare bike
Jumbo Visma was absolutely panicking when Vingegaard crashed and has to take his teammate bike but it is too big for him... Then he changed with others but JV's support car already there ready to give him the approriate bike
