hi there.i just purchased a 2010 yamaha r1 and it have the same problem.the previous owner said that its been garage for about 2 months (i bought it knowing the issue).. he told me that when he turn the ignition on theres no mechanical sound.like when you turn it on you should hear some mechanical sound under the tank.then he’s cranking in up but not firing..what you think is the problem there? so that i will what im going to buy and replace..thanks

MountainbiKEN stuff you should here the fuel pump when you go to start it. It makes a whining like sound and you should be able to here it, if you don’t check the fuses.

@FitR1_Rider I have the same problem on my 09 R1 and had the same problem on my 12 R1 previously. Used all diff batteries and no luck. Bought an antigravity battery with 360CCA and still doing the same thing on cold days. I just wanted to ask if i spend the money on a new starter motor, How do i know it will fix the problem as the starter motor is the same model and part number as the one i already have. Its not like yamaha have updated the motor. The reason im asking is because i dont wanna spend 600£ on a new motor if it don't fix the problem.
    Thanks.

Rydercbr change the starter it will fix the problem. I purchase my starter from amazon for under $100 because the OEM starter is two expensive and it sucks. I haven’t had any more problems on cold starts sense I changed my starter

My R1 is super reliable I put 30,000 miles on it. the only problem I had with the bike is the cold start issue. But the zx10r is a good bike also and might be a little faster than the R1. The R1 is a better looking bike tho.

All Yamahas do that (and probably all other sports bikes that use a similar valve/shim system).
Brace for the explanation: When you "cold start" a bike. The bike... as you can imagine... is cold. The engine is cold. I'm not sure if you have ever done a valve adjustment before (likely not) but intake and exhaust valves are opening and closing to allow air and fuel into the combustion chambers to create power. They have to perfectly seal those ports and this game of opening and sealing is happening 8 times closing. 8 times opening per cylinder (x4) for every 2 rotations of the crank. Also it is a game of EXTREMELY tiny increments.. the 09 exhaust valve clearance acceptance is between. .21 and .25 .... like.... mm... like ...that's freaking tiny...my guy. So if idle is 1300 rpm, the crank is rotating 1300 times per minute, if you do the math,, there are around 2600 opens and 2600 closes of valves per minute in your engine just at idle. But an engine quickly gets hot and metal expands when it's hot, so engineers have to design the shims/valves to perfectly seal the combustion chamber NOT when it's cold, but when it's hot. If they made the valves the proper length for when the bike was cold, it would run for 10 seconds and then break the valves as they expanded from the heat.
SO, when you turn your bike on, it idles high in order to quickly get the engine to what's called "operating temperature.
This is why when you turn your bike on, you don't get a temperature reading UNTIL the engine is sufficiently warm. You are not supposed to take off and ride until the engine is warm because that's when the valves have expanded enough to seat cleanly. So yeah, when you start an R6 or R1 it idles quickly and then settles down. It's because the engine is now warm and the valves have expanded to seat the way they need to.

      Hallo,
