Hi Theresa. Yes it used to be very common back in the seventies. Ooops aging myself there. Lol. They are very prolific growers for sure. Be careful on the watering. They don’t like to be wet but they don’t like to dry out. So watering can be challenging but once you figure out what your plant wants she will reward you greatly. I’m glad you’re gonna try it. 👍💐🌱
Named after Archibald Menzies, a Scottish surgeon, botanist and naturalist who was part of the Vancouver expedition so quite a lot of plants from the PNW are named for him! Thanks for the video, I'm trying to care for this plant and I feel like they're aren't a lot of vids on it :) I got mine from a native nursery.
Thanks for the info. Hi everyone. I’m back but only minimally for now. My health is still a major factor in my inability to make videos. But my daughter was able to fix my account which had me locked out since November. So now I can at least communicate and answer questions and see comments. Thank you all for sticking with me and for your prayers. I missed you all so much!!
I remember these from the 70's and 80's also, loved them. I found a 4in recently and was so excited and it hated my home... I don't know what I did but it promptly died, maybe I will try again!
I had one over 20 years ago, and had all but forgotten about them until I saw one last spring on my annual plant buying trip for the yard. I took a chance and put it in a pot on my deck with an assortment of annuals, and it was stunning. It handled the heat and sun with no problem, and really flourished. I'll be propagating new babies for next season!
Hi Linda Sue, I do have a few of these, I'm always propogating it ! Mine is the variegated one and I find they are thirsty plants or they wilt so fast. They're such fun for children to grow too, great to see it featured ! I LOVE the intro music ! 😋
Oh I would love to see that. And yes I was going to mention that about the kids but I forgot. Thanks for mentioning that. I’m glad you like the intro. Thank you.
.. 🤗 Thank you ever so much for the info.. I just got one today and she is the cutest plant ever.. I have a wee little memory about one in my grandparents house when I was no bigger than a piece of candy, but that was a huge one really, sitting in the window taking up all the space she had.. I bought her out of curiosity, cause she's been starring at mee for the past few month when I bought new plants.. And now she's here.. I only knew about indirect bright light from watching her colours, but nothing about water, propagating or repotting.. My new baby is a variegated one and even though she's only a little plant herself, she has a lot of babies.. She is now sitting on a hanging shelf in front of the kitchen window 🤗
I wish you would have talked a bit about the kind of soil that works best for the Piggyback as a house plant. Does peat moss in potting soil work? What other kind of fertilizer do you recommend? Thank you for a lovely talk.
I had one as a teen in the 70’s! The one I have now I purchased on EBay. She was doing really well until about a month ago and was sprouting babies, but now she is getting brown leaves…I typically water once a week but I think she got too much sun. This started after I put an air purifier in the bathroom it’s in… I hope I can save her and bring her back to health🌱 I’m in N Arizona and had her near a fairly sunny Eastern window and she was doing really well…
Well she does sound like a little diva, however ... I just ordered a 6” pot! Lol Thanks for introducing her to us! A new plant I’ve never heard of! Yay!
I included one of these in a recent order when it finally turned up in stock! My grandmother had a huge one that I inherited (in the 70's!) and then neglected at some point when the kids were little. Could not find any the last few years as I obsessed over finding it again! I found mine at Taylor Greenhouse in NY. It will be propagated and given out to all who want one once they start "piggybacking"! First tiny leaves are already popping up.
Found your channel trying to decide if I have left the "crown" too high. So many tiny new leaves are coming in underneath that I repotted a little high. This nursery's soil mix seems to hold too much water so repotting seems needed asap with my care... There's not much room to add more soil but I don't want to disturb the roots again so soon.
Cut off dead foliage and repot in dry light weight soil any kind. She likes evenly moist. Don’t over water and allow to slightly dry between watering. Don’t worry about repotting too soon. Make sure she is getting very bright but indirect light. Hope this helps.
My best friend had one many years ago, which grew to be huge and very full. She gave me a small cutting of it, and mine died soon afterwards because I knew nothing about its care.
lovely as always. love watching video to planters like me
Thank you Janice
Oh I could just listen to this intro all day. So beautiful Linda!!!!
Awe thank you
I use to have one decades ago and haven't seen one since, but I loved it.
They are coming back!! Hope you can find one
I'd never heard of this plant until you mentioned it. So I ordered one and I don't know why, but it makes me smile. It's a good grower.

I grew up in the 60's and my grandmother had one of these but it was always called 'Mother of millions '!

That's another cute one like the Pilea. I love that shade of green on the Piggy Back. Thanks for the magic care tips. ✨Great video. 🌱
Thank you cefcat. That is a very fun plant.
Yes I had one in the 70's too. I have not seen them in the two stores I can shop at.
I saw some online. You might want to check there. I kind of figured you might have had one. Lol.

I also had a piggyback plant in the 70s. You are right. They were very common.
Yes Kay they sure were. Did you like it?

Good for you. She not really a diva. Just don’t let her completely dry down and you’ll be fine. Excited to bring you something new!! Yay
And I love the text names on the screen! What a beautiful plant! And I love that you research your plants and the meaning behind their names xcetera
Yes I finally got that part of my editing. So happy about that. And I’m glad you like the plant. I think she is just beautiful

Hopefully you will try again.

Yes Wes. They are often used for and found as ground cover. Maybe you could dig up a portion to bring in your home?
