  • Let us know in the comments what knife we should make next! :D
    This time we've made a long camp knife with a nontrivial handle.
    We've shown how we fit two piecies of wood together and how to make a wooden bead without a lathe ;)
    Buy our knives at:

    Blackening the steel:
    A mixture of caustic soda (700g), potasium saltpeter (250g) and water (1,2 l)
    The temperature of the solution should be kept between 120 - 140 C.
    I keep the knife inside for about 30 minutes to get consistent black colour, you can manipulate the time to achieve different results, shorter period should give you dark brown or purple - ish colour.
    Be careful - this mixture is highly corrosive!
    Heat treatment:
    -Austenizing temperature: 830 C
    -Tempering: 180 C
    Specs:
    Cicero
    Steel: 80CrV2 5 mm
    Length: 290 mm
    Blade width: 35 mm
    Blade length: 155 mm
    Handle: Bog oak, Stabilized wood, brass pins
    Weight: 280 g

    I have noticed the edge of your blade before quenching is too thin. The final edge is decarburized and not as hard as it should be. Just to say... The edge before quenching should be approx. 1.5 to 2 milimeters at least. Nice work though.

    6"/155mm isn't "long" as far as blade length goes mate. I have commissioned a 8 1/2" (215.9mm) long blade length camp knife and I still don't consider this a "long" camp knife, you have to get into the 12" of blade length before you have a *long* camp knife IMHO.

    • @DamnedDamnedDamned1
      @DamnedDamnedDamned1 5 років тому

      Orion what a load a shit. 6-8 inches for a ‘camp knife’ is as long as you’ll ever need. Anything that a knife of that size can’t do is axe work, simple as that.
      I either use a medium sized Scandi grind and a small foresters axe if I need to split or fell anything sizeable, or take just a large-ish convex edged blade that can handle light axe work but still be used for finer work. 12 inches is just far too cumbersome for actual knife work and will never ever ever be as good at being an axe as well.. an axe. So why would you choose one over an axe when at 12 inches you’re probably equalling the weight of an axe anyway.. I’m sorry but your comment made you sound really childish

    • @waveman0
      @waveman0 5 років тому

      @@DamnedDamnedDamned1 I should have qualified my statements with a location requirement, and my preference for larger knives. Where I live big knives make sense. I live in the tropics. So most of the time machete's are what is required.
      My aforementioned 8 1/2" bladed camp knife will soon be my primary belt knife for all use and I currently regularly use my CS trailmaster (9 1/2") and TOPS Power Eagle (12") as my primary belt knife.
      BTW I am 49 years old so your comments about me being childish are insensitive and quite frankly insulting.
      I am a tool heavy type, so I always have multiple knives when out bush and so if I have my large knife I will also have a smaller knife and EDC folder available as well.
      I also like axes, so I might well have both big knives and axes available when out and about, so it's all good.
      I know my TOPS Power Eagle is a versatile tool, an exceptionally good chopper and formidable and useable knife that I have used for several years, that combines the best aspects of the bolo and kukri. If I had to choose a single knife, a true one tool option, one that I could 'do it all with', I would have to choose the Power Eagle, it is simply that good.

    Beautiful work...as always! I was wondering if you could share the handle material sealing process. I notice you used a 2 part process (some type of oil followed by a paste or cream of some sort). I'm curious as to what you use and how many coats are applied of each.
    I typically use Tung oil to finish all my handles...8-12 coats with a steel wool scrub in between coats (takes forever)

    • @BarbershopCustoms

      We use linen oil, I don't know how many coats, but we apply it until it doesn't want to soak anymore. The paste is a typical polishing paste, it's used just to give it a final shine ;)
