The making of a fancy viking styled knife.
Please note that this is not an attempt to a historical reconstruction, it's just our fantasy of how a very fancy viking knife could look like :)
The fluted handle was certainly a challenge, but I'm happy with how it came out.

How to blacken steel (hot oxide):
A mixture of caustic soda (700g), potasium saltpeter (250g) and water (1,2 l)
The temperature of the solution should be kept between 120 - 140 C.
I keep the knife inside for about 30 minutes to get consistent black colour, you can manipulate the time to achieve different results, shorter period should give you dark brown or purple - ish colour.
Be careful - this mixture is highly corrosive!
Heat treatment:
-Austenizing temperature: 830 C
-Tempering: 180 C
Thanks to Kyle Royer for showing the fluting process, check out his channel:

"worlds most dangerous file guide" plus a nice looking knife at the same time!
It's not that dangerous really, these cutter blades aren't sharp enough to be harmful
Barbershop Customs it was more of a joke than serious :) though I did expect to see you grind the sharpest part of the edge off the blades
Muito bonita essa faca☝️♥️
Nice
Thanks
MAGNIFICO,, UNA AUTENTICA OBRA DE ARTE,, DEBERIA ESTAR EN UN MUSEO,, SALUDOS DESDE ESPAÑA

Meraviglia 🥰
How could the Vikings make such a knife without all of these tools.
They had their ways, we have ours :)
Also this is not a historical reproduction :)
@@BarbershopCustoms I meant it would be interesting to show it if you can.
Wow dy Knife is Super 👍👍
Thanks

Would love to see more multi-steel blades.
We surely will make some more in the future :)
Beautiful knife love your work love the attention to detail.
Thanks
I suppose your grinder was made by Pawel Pruszynsky, very nice one...😊😊😊
Yup :)
Zajebisty nóż , zajebisty warsztat , no i Metallica!
Dzięki ;) Przy Metallice dobrze się szlifuje :)
Świetna robota!
Do ogranicznika szlifowani wykorzystałeś ostrza z węglika jakich sporo na allegro? Chcę liznąć knifemakingu i chciałem coś takiego zrobić. :)
Zajebiste nóż ;-)
Dzięki
looks soo... expensive 🤩🤩🤩
I really like this build. Question, why not tape or pinstripe your radiused handle lines? Nice work. Amazing piece. Thank you.
Thanks, I believe taping wouldn't do much :)
I can't figure out the butt end of the handle. Are there 2 open holes in the end? Is that going to get tap so you can screw in a end cap of some sort? Beautiful knife made by a true craftsman with God given gifts.
There are 2 holes, but one is halfway through, so that it's not visible after everything is glued together ;)
How much time is needed for Austenizing and tempering ? Thank you in advance. I like your work.
To znowu ja... :D
No cześć
So beautiful..... Next time tho continue the flutes into the brass?
I don't think the flutes in the brass would look good :)
@@BarbershopCustoms maybe you should just avoid having thoughts in the future then? :) :) :)
If i turn the music down low it starts to sound cool like the Sergio Leone Suite :)
👍👍👍👍👍👍👍
Wonderful and amazing work, I have a question: What is the name of the hot liquid in the fifth minute?
It's in the description
Why do you harden it before beveling the blade on the belt sander? - Mostly hardening is after the shapeing is done.
It's easier to deal with decarb that way
Man as always your knives are a knife makers dream, recommend you to everyone i know, one thing but there is a tapping chuck that you can get for your drill and or mill, it taps when you pull down and reverses when you let the pressure off, i am a fitter and use them at work and they are one of my favourite tools in the shop, check them out will send you a link if i can find one.
Keep up the awesome knives, wish you did more video i know your guy's are busy but you make the best knives along with shurup. Keep safe.
Thank you very much!
We don't do as much tapping to buy a chuck for it, two holes are no problem to do by hand, though I appreciate the advice! :)
Hello, is the equipment you use in cooking the steel chrome material?
Wow very nice 🤩, but why did you heat treat befor sanding ?
Coz we don't have to deal with the carb that way. And it saves some time, coz you don't need to clean the surface after HT, which basically comes down to handsanding the blade once again :)
But doesnt the grinding destroy the heattreat?
🔥🛠🔪👍
Beautiful knife and craftsmanship. If I might ask what is your
Source for legal ivory?
It's a synthetic ivory, elforym super tusk
I'd lose my mind with all those toys you have half the pros I know don't have that much machinery at there disposal
I never understood what kind of idiots they put dislikes on such videos ?!
very wonderful job!
Thank you :)
Disapproval of the use of ivory, maybe.
Widać kto tu ogląda Kyle'a Royer :D
Trzeba się uczyć od najlepszych :)
" Show Me The Tools And I'll Tell You The Man "
Thanks, it's a fine car polishing paste :)
Tanks
Beautiful knife. Approx. how many hours of hand sanding the blade ?
Thanks, I think it would be around 2h :)
👍👍👍
⭐⭐⭐
Great knife as always! That handle material, how do you call that? is that some kind of ivory analog? i saw some kind of paper micarta that looked very close but i cannot buy this here..
It's elforyn super tusk :)
Elforyn Super Tusk is a synthetic ivory that has a grain structure and “Schreger lines” (growth rings). Try here www.elforyn.info/en/ ,or here www.makermaterialsupply.com/collections/elforyn-super-tusk-ivory-substitute.
Really nice work! But i wouldn't recommend keeping on the gloves all the time. It's bad for the skin.
Greetings from Germany!
Thanks, we don't keep em on all the time, we have frequent breaks from them ;)
👍👍👍❤👌
9:37 Is that a Leonberger???
It's a husky. He was exhausted by the temperature outside, it was a very hot day
