NASA Canceled Boeing Starliner Launch, Why? Musk's reaction...
Once again, Starliner faced setbacks in its journey to lift off into space. Despite being on the cusp of its first crewed mission, unforeseen circumstances led to its postponement.
The Starliner spacecraft, mounted atop an Atlas V rocket, stood poised at Launch Pad SLC-41, ready to embark on a historic flight. Amidst anticipation and well-wishes, including a message of "Godspeed" from Elon Musk, two astronauts, Butch Willmore and Suni William, awaited inside the Starliner capsule. Everything seemed set for the journey to the ISS to commence precisely at 10:34 p.m.
NASA Canceled Boeing Starliner Launch, Why? Musk's reaction...
However, just two hours before the scheduled launch, the attempt came to an abrupt halt. According to launch procedures, this marked the time when ULA would commence fuel loading into the rocket. This critical process typically begins approximately 4 hours before launch, with the Centaur 2 stage being loaded with 4,000 gallons of liquid oxygen.
NASA Canceled Boeing Starliner Launch, Why? Musk's reaction...
The cause of the scrub was identified as an issue with "an oxygen relief valve on the Centaur Stage on the Atlas V," as confirmed by NASA. Following this revelation, ULA issued a notice on X stating that "ULA Launch Director Tom Heter III has made the decision to the launch team that launch operations will not continue tonight for Atlas V and Starliner."

Doesn't have sh** to do with 'dei'.......this is all about corporate greed. Other rocket producers have qualified workers...why is the management team of Boeing failing to hire and train good people and attend to quality control ? Too many years of business greed over engineering realities since the 90s, and an unwillingness to listen to engineers and safety. Their corporate culture is a mess and is a hindrance to quality engineering.
NASA should cut ties with Boeing .

I am a self employed precision engineer, as was my father before me, from whom I inherited my business. Years ago my dad did work for two local companies and did very well out of them. Both companies gradually dismissed all those in their offices with engineering capabilities and replaced them with accountants, in the hope of increasing profitability. Within 6 months, both companies were experiencing all sorts of problems because the accountants tried to streamline production lines, about which they had no experience at all. Within 18 months, both companies went bust. This is exactly the same kind of problem that has happened with Boeing. This once great company, which did much work on the Apollo program and brought us the Jumbo jet is now a shadow of its former self. Unless they change back to their original ways of doing things they will go the same way as my father’s customers did. What a crying shame!

I got a question. Tony Bruno says "The valve may have exceeded its 200,000 lifetime cycles, Bruno said, which means it would have to be replaced, pushing the launch into next week. But if engineers can determine the valve is still within that limit, the launch team could try again as soon as Friday" My question is: How does a valve exceed "200, 000 lifetime cycles" on a onetime use expendable rocket stage?

This is how rumors get started. Saw a press conference today from Tory Bruno of ULA who clarified that they probably could have just reset the flapping O2 valve, but ULA flight policy is that once the crew is in the vehicle, no changes to fueling protocols can be carried out until the crew is then out of the vehicle. In other words, they were just following procedures in the interest of safety when if this had been just a satellite payload, they would have easily just recycled the valve.

A 'state change' is when something changes from one state to another - examples are liquid to gas, liquid to solid. A sudden pressure drop across a valve can cause it to go from a liquid to a frozen (solid) state generating 'ice' buildup that affects the valve operation

Well they know the score. They both have a brain, and a mouth. If they don't say no, they are fools. But that's what wanting to be first on an untried untrue rocket breeds... foolishness. At least that's what I am thinking. Some people don't have a lot of value for their lives. And NASA is full of a bunch of half ass engineers and a lot of accountants and managers who wouldn't step a foot onto that rocket themselves. All the good engineers have gone to work for SpaceX and a couple of other private companies. Safety should be paramount, and NASA should have been working on reusability 50 years ago. Reusability is an obvious progression that all rocketeers should be working for. But even now, NASA and ULA are not considering this in any of their programs. They are idiots.

Liquid oxygen is not a fuel, rather it is an oxidizer.

    • @Mity_Mo
      @Mity_Mo 10 днів тому

Correct ! It was an oxygen relief valve. Why the turmoil ?
Because the NASA/Boeing/ULA safety structure agreed to does not allow them to recycle the valve while fully fueled,
which is the normal procedure when not crewed, that is highly effective that fixes the problem.
Now when a valve on a plane is intermittent, I believe the procedure is to replace it before climbing to 35,000 feet.
      Good advice, crew safety.

Though it is more expensive to Boing to do it, than it would be to just cancel the contract. They are in a catch 22 situation, when both parties are worse off by doing it than not doing it. However, if one side alone cancels it, the price to pay will be even worse.
