NASA astronauts revealed how SpaceX space suit is better than Boeing Starliner's...
Over the years, astronauts donning SpaceX spacesuits aboard Dragon spacecraft have become a familiar sight within the aerospace community. However, in the coming days, a new player will enter the stage as Boeing unveils its own spacesuit for astronauts participating in the Starliner mission.
NASA astronauts revealed how SpaceX space suit is better than Boeing Starliner's...
This development has sparked widespread commentary from NASA astronauts, many of whom have voiced their preference for the SpaceX spacesuit over its Starliner counterpart. But what sets the SpaceX spacesuit apart? What makes it the preferred choice among astronauts?
Join us on today's episode of Great SpaceX as we delve into these questions and explore the nuances of spacesuit design, functionality, and comfort, shedding light on why the SpaceX spacesuit has earned the admiration of astronauts and enthusiasts alike.
NASA astronauts revealed how SpaceX space suit is better than Boeing Starliner's...
When discussing Boeing and their Starliner, disappointment has often been a prevailing sentiment. However, a glimmer of hope emerged with the firm establishment of a launch schedule for early May, finally bringing an end to the uncertainty.

I hope the Starliner astronauts survive this demo mission. They are brave souls indeed !
Yeah, the starliner's door might fly off in flight.
Hopefully, they can complete the mission and return soon
The best part about Boeing space suit is it wasn't made by Boeing.
Fake video. No astronaut has compared the two suits. In fact I doubt any astronaut has even tried both as they have separate starliner and dragon crews.
Good point, and most likely true. I was giving this channel a chance but don’t like lying. “Many of whom have voiced their preference for the SpaceX spacesuit over the starliner counterpart” is simply not true. Will unsubscribe
I hate to break it to this guy but this suit has been on the board at David Clark since 1995. I was a designer on the 1032 and the follow on 1035. I also did a bunch of the early design work on the soft helmet and the high mobility joints.
*I like which ever one keeps me alive with the loss of cabin pressure !*
SpaceX listens to the people who are going to wear the suits so it just makes sense that they would be better.
Yeah, this set they apart from the rest
And you think no other firm does this? Its such a cultist thing to say.
The Boeing Starliner space capsule will eventually be successfull - even tho' it is way over budget and way, way behind schedule ! The comparison between astronaut Spacex vs Boeing spacesuits is trivial hype.
I’m betting it’s not trivial to the astronauts who have to wear whatever is chosen for them.
You are correct the Skylander is actually out of date in terms of technology and reusability
Who would be brave enough to ride on a Boeing ship? They haven't even mastered atmospheric flight
Those look like the Oceangate Titan of space suits. I'd rather rock the Mercury project suits over this.
Space X employees are still alive. Nuff said.
They need to make every suit different colour.
Among us
😂😂😂, great description
Sounds sus
These are NOT 'spacesuits". They are "pressure" suits desiigned for the event of a UDE (Unscheduled Depressurization Episode) of the capsule. Same principle for the suits of the SR71 pilots (check it out). A "spacesuit" is designed for the space environment. Regardless, Space X has the better suit (in function & in style).
The new version from Space X is good for EVA. For transport to the orbit the old version is good enough.
Just me, but the space X suit looks to me like a movie suit made functional, the other like a fifth generation pressure suit.
@@2adamast Looks and function are two different things. you can not see how good a thing is, you need to test it. Up to now the astronauts seem to be quite happy with the quality of Space X suits so far. Operating them for some missions will tell more.
@@2adamast SpaceX : 21century tech, NASA 20th century tech.
Oba kombinezony nie uratowały by astronautów przed dekompresją kabiny. Boinga nawet przed deszczem.
I like how the SpaceX one looks very similar to some of the fancier Normal Suits from Mobile Suit Gundam. I mean it looks interestingly similar to the one worn by Banagher Links from Gundam Unicorn from 2010.
oh my god you are right!! also nice to see someone else who watched unicorn!
All though I agree with the conclusion it’s premature to compare as the Boeing suit has not been used in flights yet. Also would be good to have same astronaut try and use both suits. Of course an astronaut is going to say the suit they have is great to the public they kinda have to as promotion is part of the job now that things are commercial corporations.
Exactly others can make a more objective judgement over time.
That is cause the Boeing one is so far a Space Suit. While until proof of the contrary, Space X one is a crew suit that you wear inside the shuttle or capsule or whatever. The difference is huge between a suit made to protect you from a decompression inside a shuttle and a proper EVA suit. But don't take my word for it, look it up.
Opening the space industry to private corporations is probably the best thing to happen to the space program since Yuri Gagarin's flight in 1961. Competition is what drives innovation. There will be hiccups along the way, setbacks, even lives lost... but in the long-term it'll get us where we need to be.
"Eschew"! You used the word "eschew"! Automatic quadruple bonus points!
Good episode. I await hoodies for Earthwear that mimic the SpaceX suit.
My honor, thanks
Both suits are pressure suits and not space suits.
= They can not be worn in space.
These suits are just to protect the astronauts in case of cabin pressure loss.
SpaceX came out with their new EVA suit earlier today. This new one is for spacewalks.
@@matarael Yes they have been working on them for the private Axiom "space walk" mission where they will depressure the whole Dragon Cabin, open the hatch, expose all 4 Axiom Astronauts to the harsh grip of space and if I recall correctly 1 Astronaut will even leave the confines of Dragon and float out of the hatch on an umbilical cord.
I am getting 1960ties vibes 🤫🤫🤫😆😅😅🤣🤣
Incredible that it took so long to do it again 🙄😔🧐
@kwichzwellbreck697 dude they're testing new technology they're not just gonna make something and immediately put it into service without any testing to make sure it's safe are you crazy
@@flipz8632 ?????? WTF are you talking about?
There are two sets of pressure suits for ascent and descent what the astronauts are wearing for cabin pressure loss protection = the white/black SpaceX one and the blue Boing one.
This is what we discuss here.
AND THEN there is the new Space Suit SpaceX has introduced a week ago that is white/black as well BUT IS A COMPLETE different suit made for EVA which has to face the complete different problems of full contact with space.
And since the Polaris Dawn Mission where 4 astronauts will be doing the first 4 people (private) EVA simultaneously where even 2 astronauts will leave the space craft (in turns) while the other 3 will stay EVAed inside Dragon is planned for in about 2-3 months ("this summer") it is safe to say the EVA suits are ready!
So again what are you talking about?
The SpaceX EVA suit is tested and ready and the pressure suits anyway??
You will never see An astronaut outside the space station with ether these suits there just pressure suits for the loss of pressure, not for a long space task.
In the beginning, they had VHS and Beta Max after a couple of years, and one eliminated the other.
Look like space x designers watches too much star wars, boeing is the real deal
So you don't like that the space x suit looks too futuristic and good?
Real deal - Space X suit has been used 13 times for real 😆😉I guess they just made star wars real
Boeing suits look like drysuits.
Both suits are designed to do the same job: protect the crew upon take off and reentry in case of cabin depressurization or fire. Along with that there are ancillary functions such as communications, life support, etc. both suits are designed to be lighter, more flexible and comfortable than previous generations of suits. However, in comparing the two purely from what can be seeing in these videos, the Spacex suit would appear to have achieved better overall integration of all systems. Spacex’s design of a single umbilical that attaches to the thigh for life support and communications is quite elegant. The helmet is simpler and doesn’t require an additional Snoopy helmet. The Boeing suit seems to be very fussy. Lots of zippers, overlapping folds on the upper arms, two umbilicals on either side of the abdomen and some other cable on the left side of torso (no sure about this though). Spacex suit appears to be easier and simpler when it comes to donning and un-donning. Both suits are designed to NASA specifications for crew protection. It would interesting to know how they compare in this regard. Also, there might some non-apparent features unique to each suit. Again, it would be great to understand them. Overall it would seem that the Spacex suit follows Elon Musk’s design philosophy that the best part is no part. In other words KISS.
The Matrix glitched again at 5:17, this is not the first time I committed about this on your website!
I will tell this to Kevin. Thanks your feedback
SpaceX suits look like they were designed by the Village People.
Really looking forward to release of more info on the SpaceX EVA suits , they are very complex spacecraft in their own right, not surprised SpaceX has taken a year longer to prefect them than planed. Also first two non NASA, SpaceX employees Sarah Gillis and Anna Menon will be part of the in Space testing, what a dream coming true for them.
Hmmm a year longer than planned to perfect them, that’s Elon time for you, it always defies the laws of physics, though it’s difficult to notice when Boeing has no concept of time whatsoever.
Wow what startling news. US Astronauts like the SpaceX Dragon flight suits over the Roskosmos or Shuttle flight suits. Sure our crews would like anything over what or they had in the legacy systems. But how many astronauts that have flow on Dragon have actually tried the Starliner suits?
And you speculate that the Starliner suits MAY be cumbersome at specific times. No proof just speculation. Both Dragon and Starliner flight suits need to be tested in LEO vacuum with a human occupant before saying something definitive.
I wouldn't trust boeing.
Didn't their original astronaut retire just before they screwed up the first starliner test?
Same idol
Be careful you might die saying this... have you seen the second whistleblower died suddenly.
Yeah, I would fly Russian before Boeing.
suits are not made by Boeing they are made by David Clark Co. who made the 1032 LES and the 1035 Caps. The 1032 was partial pressure and the 1035 is full pressure thats what the large connectors are at the gloves.
David Clark Co. has a long history of making flight safety equipment dating back to the Second World War. The military has trusted their g-suites to them since the beginning of the jet age. They also build outstanding communications equipment with DC aviation headsets. I will definitely say Boeing didn’t go to lowest bidder on this one.
Should have waited another day for the release of the new SpaceX EVA spacesuit lmao
The only thing I don't like about SpaceX’s Space Suit is their “shoes or boots”. They look like rain boots to me.
Yeah,
Good Morning. I don't think I like the idea of sealing the visor with a zipper. Zippers are prone to leak. What if it jams up. It can and it will. If and when it does. You're screwed. If they are going to make a suit. Don't seal it with a zipper. Great Episode.
Thanks for your great analysis. Let's wait for their performance to make further comparison
@@colonbina1 I couldn't agree more, Kev. Have a Great Day. See You Soon.
Starliner's spacesuit is probabbly the equivalent of a wearable Boeing 737 Max.

Yeah. EVA and IVA suit

Do they both work? What do they both look like while inflated? I assume they are actually tested while inflated.
Judging by comments, this channel attracts some seriously not too bright people.
Like you I guess?
For Orbital assembly (glue extra) going to require some kind of Sensor link /human interface to a space capable Optimus robot. Include a POV neural link from NASA control? Hey! My robot wants to dance!
Check to make sure Boeing has even set money aside to stitch the suit together, BTW this is probably going to be my final comment.
The space x suit reminds me of the one spoke took in star trek motion picture.

5:16 double f bomb
comparing apples and oranges. you're intermixing iva, eva, and different missions
The guy making the video seems to be kind of confused.. both only exist as IVA suits currently but the guy who made this video seems to include weird snippets about the upcoming spacex EVA suit
7:36 The EVA suit will have the cumbersome umbilical cables.
♥️♥️♥️
the space X suits just look futuristic and look like they have come from some science fiction source book. the NASA orange suits looked like copies of the Star Wars rebel fighter pilot suits and the Boeing suits look meh!
I guess it’s always a matter of aesthetic preference in the end but I have always thought the SpaceX suit is surprisingly something put together by cash strapped effects designers for a B sci-fi movie from the 60s, ie a poor man’s view of what a future suit might look like a bit like Hardy Amiss’s take on Air Stewardess outfits on the shuttle in 2001, a film otherwise brilliant I might add, but it perhaps deserved better than the Queen’s favourite and rather old hat conservative designer trying to be ‘modern’ which is how the SpaceX suit looks to me, did Musk influence it I wonder? Oh and it seems to make everyone look fat and to my eye far from sleek, esp that weird looking helmet that’s escaped from the Dr Who props Dept though if it works well who cares about the weird look. At first sight the Boeing suit looks far better, efficient, modern practical and fit for function, over the bargain basement put together ‘whatever mis matched bits we could find in the nearest costume store to look different’ approach. But hey I’m judging looks over the possible functionality so in that regard it might indeed be better, though I will take views from non SpaceX fan boy UA-cam channels as well on that one so as to try to make a balanced objective judgement.
Youre comparing two different types of suits
Could you do a vid on WHY a space suit needs to be so complicated? Like, I get the pressure difference and temp controls. Plus abrasion resistance to micro particles in space... But is that it? I would think in 2024 we'd be able to design something... Slicker. I'm missing something.
Thanks for your great suggestion. We'll take note this ☺️
Yea dude the main issues is that you gotta he able to fit a whole host of life support systems in to a thin suit that inflated like a balloon but still be able to have normal flexibility at such high pressures and also you have to protect the user from high levels of radiation and keep them at an optimal temperature while half their body is heared up to 150 degrees and their other half as cold as -150 degrees while being able to accommodate the different body types of the crew its not something easy to design space suits are more like human shaped space craft then normal clothing
2:40 Despite upgrading their suits, Boeing remained all in with their retro 60’s buttons, knobs and switches look.
Yeah👍
Don't know might be less likely to fail and easier to fix if it does.
this is Simple the Boeing suit costs more they have to make sure that the government pays two times for one they just see that BIG pot on money and they just want theirs
The StarLiner has a name of Sea Anchor, below the US flag. That sounds rather ominous.
When will I be able to buy my own SpaceX suit?
Oh dear do you have many friends?
Why does the force of gravity change so abruptly when we leave the atmosphere?
It doesn't. It slowly lowers with distance from the planet exactly like a light bulb slowly gets dimmer as you walk away from it. Where the international space station is there is still 90% of the gravity that you feel at sea level. If you weight 100 lbs here on Earth and there was a "stationary" platform where the space station is - you would still weigh 90 lbs on that platform. The reason they don't "feel" gravity there is because the ISS isn't stationary, it is in orbit around the Earth. They orbit every 90 minutes so their centrifugal force that wants to fling them outward is EXACTLY the same as the gravity wants to pull them inward. Think of a merry-go-round that wants to fling you out and gravity wants to pull you in. Balance the 2 forces and they cancel and you feel weightless. That is why to get to orbit you have to travel at 17,500 MPH sideways to stay up there. Without that centrifugal force you would fall back down just like you threw a rock up into the air. In fact, that is how they get back down to Earth. The just slow down a little bit and that reduces their centrifugal outward force and gravity pulls them back down. Remember; it is Earths gravity that holds the Moon in place and the Moons gravity that affects the tides and the Sun's gravity that holds the Earth in place - look how far away those 2 objects are and their gravity still works all the way over here.
@@wally7856 but it works the same for a 500 ton space station and a 200 pound human?

Boeing should give it up FFS how much more money is going to be WASTED ??????
Infinitely more, as long as the Tax-Payer-Dollars are used for that ^^
Boeing has already said that once the 6 flights of the contract are completed, they quit. The atlas V rocket uses Russian RD-180 engines and those are no longer available due to the conflict and they only have 6 put away for this contract. This is a dead end endeavour before it gets off the ground. Boeing milked it for what it's worth and has no intention of spending any of their own money on this program.
Why. Competition is a good thing
@@JimStanfield-zo2pz I agree, Competition is a good thing!!! With monopolies the world starts to fall apart.
When a micrometeorite is headed for your ship?. Which suit are you going to grab to put on. Or will one fit over the other?
Yes - but that SpaceX suit looks just like it came out of a Bugs Bunny cartoon.
That blue suit is gonna give great contrast with the blue ocean if they ever have to ditch in there. That's why they are orange.
Oh, great analysis 👍
@colonbina1 I worked on cruise ships. Lifeboats have to be orange in order to be seen against the blue ocean. It's probably the reason the shuttles tank was also bright orange, easier to find. A blue suit is essentially a ghille suit for the sea, or in the common vernacular, you're F ed.
@@apocraphontripp4728 The shuttle's main tank was orange because that's the color of the spray foam insulation used to insulate the cryogenic tanks after a little bit of sun exposure. They painted them white at first then decided that the 600 lbs of paint didn't improve the evaporation rates of the fuel at all (by reflecting sunlight) so they left them natural to save weight. The spray foam is pale yellow when first applied but turns orange after some time in the sun.

Maybe space fishing and space cheese manufacturing are the future, who knows?
And also Oompa Loompas probably were not magic creatures, but aliens from a planet where life evolved from sugar. Makes total sense to me.

Gold medal for you today☺️
ok so basically you're comparing the "style" of the suits ... great content !
So for reference, why don't you check out how mobility in EVA really works when you have a pressurized suit. You're literally a balloon floating in space. that's why Boeing suit has those bulky arms joints. SpaceX does not therefor REDUCING the mobility. IF you're gonna say that "it's internal" well I honestly doubt it cause they are so tight that I don't see any form of mechanism built in for that.
Which brings me to the second point... Where the heck is the temperature regulation in SpaceX suit ?? For those (including the author) who don't know, when you're in space and exposed to light, the temperature climbs quickly and when on a shadow, it also drops quickly that's why Nasa an Boeing suit have those big plug. Those are for a water cooling / heating that goes through the fabric of the space suit. Space X ... lacking it of course...
Once again, congratulation on mister Musk for delivering an half baked idea and fans of Space X thinking that this is the FUTUREEEEE. Spoiler alert, they'll select Boeing...
The crew dragon suit's umbilical port is on the thigh instead of the chest (or belly in Starliner's case). Also, the sun/shade exposure problem with cooling is relevant for extravehicular (EVA) suits, while both the starliner ans dragon suits are intra vehicular (IVA) suits designed to be worn only inside the vehicle, where solar exposure is not an issue. The ports are to plug on the life support system of the ship in case of a depressurization.
@@andromededp5316 In video is also EVA suit by SpaceX.
Thanks for your great support 👍
SpaceX uses more input from the Bearers of the Burden (Astronauts) than Boeing does. Also, Boeing is
so latently encumbered by past suit designs that it's legacy suits shows up a little in their new suits.
SpaceX is designing their suits from the Ground up, so to speak.
Boeing is a company that is failing on both fronts: aviation and aerospace. They desperately need to turn things around
Dude the space x suit isn't even a vacuum suit. You saying people enjoy wearing pajamas over an actual space suit? Yeah no duh
Neither is the Boeing suit
What do you mean by vacuum suit? If you mean EVA suit you'd be correct, but... neither is the boeing suit. They're both IVA suits intended to be worn inside a craft during the highest-risk parts of a mission. Both meet the same Nasa standards.
So basically it's not really apt to even call either one a space suit. They're flight suits at best. You don't need a flight suit though so really it's pretty pointless to debate which useless thing is better
You need to pay attention. You totally nissed the functionality and the changes for the Eva versions.
